The 1985 movie Tampopo brought me here. I say this half jokingly, but the hilarity of the scene when the restaurant is referenced coupled with the feeling of intrigue it left led me to make plans for my visit to this iconic restaurant. Ambiance: Understated elegance with a neutral color palette. The atmosphere does not destract from the food. The choice of decor elevates the experience even more. Food: I had Canard de Challans roti aux cerises, Jus a l'Amaretto. Everything about this dish was perfect. The duck was tender and juicy and the cherry sauce with vanilla complimented the duck lending a warm, sweet and tart components to the dish. Service: Days before I arrived to the restaurant an email was sent to remind me of my upcoming visit. Service from the moment I set foot in the restaurant was exceptional. One of the waitstaff escorted me to where the restrooms were and at the end of the meal, the host reserved a taxi for my departure and presented me with a copy of the evening's menu to take with me. We dined here approximately twenty years ago based on a family recommendation and were very impressed by both the cuisine and the service. During that visit, we, being American, were seated with other American guests. Although this was perfectly agreeable, we would have welcomed the opportunity to be seated with guests from different parts of the world. Expect a high-end (and a bit up tight) dining experience. Overall depending on your preference, my personal favorite would be hole in the wall bistro food. High price alone does not make the food tasted better. We look forward to Le Taillevent on our visit . The tasting menu was a series of interesting small plates, beautifully presented. The wine steward was helpful and attentive. The waitstaff service was impeccable. Overall, just the kind of experience that some folks may enjoy. I did not enjoy the amuse bouche - they were pretty underwhelming. But the meal got better in the pre- first course which was a warm cuttle fish dish with caviar, quite phenomenal! The second course was the langoustine with truffles. The favorite was the beef Wellington, cooked perfectly medium rare with the amazing crust. Expect to pay top dollars. read more

My husband and I came here for a special dinner on our second last night in Paris. I found out about Le Taillevent through the Michelin guide, as it has two Michelin stars. I had made a reservation online a few weeks or a month prior to coming. The reservation was easy enough to make online, but we were only able to get reservations for a Friday night - all on Saturday were booked out. We showed up at 7:15 pm on a Friday night. The restaurant had just opened, so it was fairly quiet. The ambience here is chic and beautiful - definitely one of the most beautiful dining rooms I have ever been in. They had three options for menus: a la carte, or two pre-fixe options. We went with the pre-fixe option that included two courses being cooked at the table. We started with an amuse bouche, before moving on to the appetizer (flambe lobster) being cooked at our table. We were served different parts of the lobster with two different sauces. The next course was our main dish, which consisted of beef wellington. The beef was cooked exactly to medium rare, and was tender and flavorsome. It was served in a red wine jus. To go along with the beef, they also prepared some vegetables separately, on the side. After the beef, one of the staff came out with an enormous cheese tray on wheels, that would satisfy any cheese lover. I selected four, while my husband only chose two. All of them were delicious, but my favorite one was a washed-rind cheese from Burgundy that tasted somewhat similar to taleggio. For our dessert course, we had crepes suzettes, which were cooked at our table. This was a nice spectacle, but I wasn't a big fan of the crepes. My husband enjoyed them though. After the crepes, they brought out a box of chocolates for us to select from. The service here was professional and efficient. Absolutely blown away by everything: from the food, to the staff, to the beautiful interior, and to the very (in my humble opinion) reasonable lunch price. I cannot take my mind off this place!!! Coming into the restaurant, I felt intimidated to dine alone at a two star restaurant. But the staff quickly made me feel at ease by asking me questions and coming over to check up on how I was doing. All the food came perfectly and I was surprised at just how much there was!! For 90€, I got some small appetizers, a larger appetizer, my entree, a dessert, and then a finishing cream puff. The apps were delicious and unique, the brioche soft and buttery and flaky, the scallop was perfect, and the pork.. a flavor bomb with mushrooms, gnocchi, and this delicious juice/sauce that I would die for. When in Paris right? Went here on a whim - first Michelin "lunch" experience so the tasting menu was slightly abbreviated but it was still very filling and high quality. They had dishes with some of our not so favorite foods that were surprisingly delicious because of how they were paired and dressed. My partner is not a big fan of fish, but do a potato crust and light yet tasteful sauce with fresh fish and he is sold. All of their dishes were creative and well balanced. First of all, the following experience happened many years ago but it was not an option on the pull down screen. My wife (who grew up in Paris) and I went to Taillevent years ago to celebrate our anniversary. My father and her had raged about the experience when they were living in Paris. My wife and I were sat down in a wonderful spot within the restaurant and I couldn't wait for this extraordinary service I had heard about for years. There were two woman from China sitting adjacent to us and I happened to hear one of them ask for a menu in Chinese. The waiter obliged without hesitation. When he came to our table I asked him if I could have a menu in English. Only speaking French he explained that he did not (my wife translated for me) and walked away. So I sat there paying $$$$$$ so that my wife could talk to me like I was a four year old. I understand I'm in a foreign country and I would never had asked for a menu in English if I hadn't seen what happened with the Chinese couple. Very disappointing. read more

I changed my original dinner reservation after seeing Taillevent and reading Yelp reviews by multiple ppl saying it was the best meal of their life. I was SO looking forward to going. And was SO disappointed. We decided to go with the set menu. That might have been our mistake. The service was pretentious (which I expected, so it wasn't off-putting) but effective. Course after course came and while it was all fine, nothing was delicious. The bread was also a let down. Then the entree came and it was worse than ok. It was straight up bad. It was a red snapper that lacked any kind of seasoning or flavor. Dessert was just "meh". Overall it was a big let down. One of the best fine-dining experiences I've had. From the moment we walked in the door, the professionalism and experience of the staff was obvious. My colleague decided to join me for dinner at the last minute and he didn't have a suit jacket so they kindly provided one for him. Upon being seated in the gorgeous dining area, we were provided menus for wine, a la carte dining, and the tasting menu. You really can't go wrong when ordering French wine but there is a knowledgeable sommelier available should you want some guidance. We opted for a beautiful bottle of Bordeaux that did not disappoint. It paired well with the tasting menu (198 Euros per person), which was inventive and delicious. While nearly every dish was amazing, the cheese course made my heart swoon. They roll over a huge cart filled with an array of options: hard, soft & creamy, goat, blue & stinky. . . All fabulous. And the best part? No limit for how many you can try -- except for your already-full belly. It was a turophile's dream. Next to the cheese course, the frog leg risotto was my favorite course. The award for the most artful presentation goes to the puréed watercress topped with caviar and flower petals. Amazing. Dining at Le Taillevent is an experience not to be missed when in Paris. This was one of our most expensive meals. The atmosphere is Fine Dining to the max. The atmosphere is VERY stuffy and very quiet. I felt awkward at times because everything was so rehearsed with a specific manner of what should be done and how. You definitely want to take your time eating and enjoying your meal. If you rush, you will get looked at as if you didn't enjoy the time and the food was not experienced. I definitely would consider going here. I did enjoy sitting next to my husband vs across the table from each other. We were able to see the 'performance' of each employee's position and what they were to do and when. The food is exquisite and delicious. It is a few short blocks from the Arc de Triomphe. Jackets are required and ladies should wear a dress, skirt or dress pants and blouse. Do NOT play with your cell phone while dining. It is improper and you will feel out of place. Unless you were like me taking pictures of the food - take the pic and put the phone down. read more

I had the great privilege of eating a long lunch with my wife at Taillevent in November 2008. I know that's a while ago, but I have just started to use Yelp, and discovered that France is one of the countries that also has the option of having reviews posted on this site. Our meal on that wonderful afternoon in Paris was simply the most amazing culinary experience I have ever had, and I expect that it shall always be the paragon of dining for me. We both had a large tasting menu experience, which is well worth the price... at ANY price! Since it's been so long since we dined here, I won't detail each course for you, but after looking at their website, I noted that their Chef remains the same, although the items appear different; I would imagine that they are still executing things perfectly! We were received by the staff as if we were family when we arrived, and we were not rushed through our lunch - which lasted almost 4 hours! Portions are appropriate for those who truly enjoy the taste and texture of fine food... and not a smorgasbord or feeding trough. The wine selections are divine, and complement each course in the tasting beautifully. Their sommelier is, as expected at an establishment like this, excellent. We adored the wine pairings very much, and finished the afternoon with an extremely rare cognac... said to be from 1921. I relished that historic libation as I drank in its history, and the fact that this delicious spirit had survived WW2 was not lost on me. Taillevent is the type of establishment which all fine restaurants should aspire to be. I sincerely hope that they regain their third Michelin star someday, as they are truly deserving of recognition of their incredible dining experience. My only regret is that I didn't dine at this restaurant sooner!!! We had a reservation in 2009. The concierge talked me out of of going because he stated that we had too many fine dining experiences in one trip to Paris. Clearly, he didn't know me and why did I listen to this foolishness??? This place is awesome!!! Food: Seafood and black squid ink pasta was amazing. Ravioli with mushrooms was good. Duck with apricot was a great combination of sweet and savory. The duck was cooked to perfection at medium rare. My favorite dish of the meal. Lamb - My husband loved the lamb. Cheese cart - So many options. We loved our selection of 6 cheeses. Everything was amazing. The service and room are what you would expect from a traditional fine dining experience in Paris. I like this way of dining; it never gets old. This exceptional haute cuisine restaurant is perfection in every regard. Despite its lofty reputation and elite status, it is inviting warm and friendly, ( in contrast to L'Ambrosie which is snotty,unapproachable and cold). My favorite starter is the artichoke and black truffle salad. For my main course, I typically have the duck pressé. The piece de resistance is their deserts and as for their selection of cheese, mon dieu!! Close your eyes with each mouthful at Taillevent, and you might think you are in heaven. My wife and I went for dinner at Taillevent after our first full-day in Paris. While it was not as enjoyable Epicure in Le Bristol (see my review), it was still five-star, top rated! We were greeted very warmly at the door and were seated after my wife checked her coat. The tables were small and intimate, although ours was near the entrance to the kitchen (not my favorite placement). The menu was entirely in French, and while our waiter did speak a little English, we opted for the tasting menu, just to be sure we didn't short-change ourselves. The Sommelier chose wines for us based on the courses of the tasting menu. While I was not able to catch all the names of the wines, he did a fantastic job! We started out with lobster bisque and caviar. The bisque was just slightly warm, and gave blended with the caviar quite nicely. Next, frog legs served in risotto and a rich cream sauce (see posted photo) which was exquisite (first time I have had frogs legs). Then it was on to scallops served 'St Jacques aux chataignes' style. Quite good, and artistically presented. The next course was one of our favorite - foie gras. It was some of the best we have ever had (Rovers in Seattle came close). The bouquet and taste of the wine served with our Foie Gras was the best best pairing we have ever had. We would have eaten like goldfish if given the chance. The filet of veal that came next was succulent, and again, paired very well with wine. It really didn't need a knife for cutting, but we used one anyway. :-) The cheese plate was offered to us and then various chocolates and other treats. The 'Chocolate Araguani' dessert that was served was devine, and the staff even gave us special recognition that we were celebrating our 20th anniversary in Paris. The table was clearly ours for the evening, and the staff at Taillevent gave us a bottle of very strong Condrieu to sip and enjoy for the remainder of the night. When we left, we felt great, and had a wonderful time walking back to the hotel, past the Arc de Triomphe and along the Champs- Élysées. As I mentioned earlier, the experience was not quite as rewarding as Epicure, but this place is clearly five-star. read more

Magnifique!!!!! This was a culinary experience like no other. Taillevent is the most sophisticated restaurant we have ever been to. While upscale and sophisticated, the museum quality to the restaurant was initially intimidating, but the staff was friendly and helpful picking out selections from a French menu I could not decipher. Frankly, can't even repeat all the selections we made but they were incredible. The sommelier was also incredibly helpful in choosing a delightful Pinot Noir and Bordeaux. PS. One of the best three meals of my life (French Laundry, Yountville, California and Chateau de la Chevre D'Or in Eze, France ). Tasteful and subdued decor -- really liked the loveseat-style seating around the center of the room where service occurs ... fun to watch staff prepare food for delivery and sommeliers decant wine. Also really liked the abstract oil paintings on the walls. Started with the most divine gougeres (cheese puffs) and champagne (I had Taillevant rose (produced by Deutz) and my husband has Taittinger). I ordered the langoustines from Brittany with braised artichokes poivrade with cilantro and citrus sauce. Hands down the best langoustines I've eaten - so fresh and perfectly cooked (most I've had were not as fresh and were overcooked). Each of the langoustines had a perfect piece of cilantro on it -- quartered artichoke hearts had been poached a citrus infused liquid and each had a small square of grapefruit. The citrus sauce was light and flavorful, not too syrupy or heavy (remarkably didn't seem to have much butter in it). My husband started with the foie gras (pate-style) with jambon de Jabugo (Iberico ham) and quince jelly. The jambon de Jabugo was in the middle of 2 layers (each about an inch thick) of foie gras and added a salty-sweet component to the foie. Served with toasted brown bread. Among the best foie gras of that type (as opposed to the raw foie gras which is typically pan seared). With our first course, I had a glass of the Taittinger champagne and my husband had a glass of Jurançon (a sauternes-like wine (something about a King of France being baptized with this wine ... Henry IX??)). I then had the very best lamb I've had -- along one side of the plate was a medley of what seemed to be butter poached petit vegetables (pearl onions, tiny carrots, tiny potatoes) arranged on a nano-thin rectangle of what looked to be a veal stock gelee. The heart of lamb tenderloin was cooked sous vide, then rolled in fresh mint and cilantro, then wrapped in phyllo dough and sauteed in butter until crispy and heated through. The roll is then cut into 2 pieces and presented like a spring roll with just a hint of lamb jus or veal stock under the rolls (enough for flavor but not enough to soak the crispy dough). The most delicate, tender, yet flavorful lamb I've eaten and I really liked the added textural element of the filo crunch. Cooked perfectly to medium-rare as I had ordered it. My husband raved about his filet of beef with Bordelaise sauce and pan-fried potatoes. The beef was pan-seared to medium-rare as ordered and tender, juicy and flavorful. The potatoes were cut into 2 inch high "plugs," then hollowed out and stuffed with what seemed to be pulled braised beef and then finally pan-fried in butter. The Bordelaise sauce is made with veal stock they make daily with roasted veal bones and bone marrow - so the sauce is rich and unctuous. With our meat course we enjoyed a divine 1996 Chateau Ausone from St. Emilion in Bordeaux. It had great structure, lots of black current and black cherry, some tobacco, minerals and graphite. Then ... we had cheeses! I was asked whether I preferred mild, medium or strong and I meekly said mild to medium ... a mistake ... while my cheeses were all delicious, my husband's plate of medium to strong cheeses was much more appealing. In particular, I am now very fond of Vacherin Mont D'or cheese (of course, a rare, highly seasonal cheese from Switzerland near the border of France). If that wasn't enough, we ordered the Crepes Suzette - the best I've had -- sufficient lemon in the underlying sauce to balance out the sweetness of reduced orange sauce. Crepes were light and just slightly chewy, as they should be. Then, cappucinos -- foam was a bit sudsy, but the underlying espresso was dark and flavorful but not bitter (much better than at the Galerie du George V (Four Seasons)). Then, the same nice genlteman who took 10 or so photos of us (we asked for 1) arrived with 2 glasses and a bottle of Taillevent Cognac and said, in a stoic manner, "C'est necessaire ..." Of course it's necesary to follow an eating extravaganza with some Cognac (gratis, I should add). The food preparation and presentation were all clean and elegant and not contrived in the least. The service throughout was exquisite and not stuffy. In fact, we had a lot of fun conversing in broken French and English with many of the staff. To help alleviate the cetacean (whale-like) feeling following such a meal, we walked back to our apartment -- a cautionary note .... don't go shopping after drinking that much at lunch ... I ended up buying my husband a very expensive crocodile belt with a sterling silver lion buckle at Gianfranco Ferre! Will return the next time we are in Paris. read more

Definitely a restaurant to go to if ever in Paris. Great atmosphere, the staff is very attentive and the set up of the restaurant is perfect. Tables are set up in the main dining room in a manner in which those seated at the tables look in towards the center of the room. Most of the tables are set up as a loveseat set up as if you are sitting at an opera or play and watching the production of food and beverage that is about to be served. The wait staff is instrumental and work together well in a fluid motion, whether they are bringing your utensils, decanting the wine or serving your next course. The food is always amazing. I have been to this restaurant a total of 4 times and each time we left full and satisfied. French food tends to have a reputation of heavy creams and sauces but this is not the case in any of the meals that we have had here. Flavors have been outstanding and the seasoning along with the way the ingredients mesh together in perfect harmony has made for great dining experiences. Whether it's the John Dory or the scallops, the veal or the crispy langoustines, they are cooked to perfection and served hot with great presentation. Desserts are impeccable and their wine list and sommelier are some of the best that I have seen. Can't forget about the cheese cart and their ridiculous selection of some of the best cheeses that I have ever eaten. At such an amazing restaurant, it's hard to believe that they remembered us so well that the sommelier remembered exactly which wines we had the last time we were there. Be prepared to dress in a suit and tie and remember to wear suit pants that are a few sizes to large. My girlfriend and I ate hear and had to sleep sitting up in our bed afterwards LOL. The menu has been updated and is less "classic" than before. The food and service were very good. We had the tasting menu which included a cheese course. This restaurant is about as iconic as it gets. It's standards for service and food are in a word..perfect. My wife and I ate here years ago on our honeymoon and we were treated like royalty. They even greet you by name when you arrive at the door. We felt as if we were coming to dinner at someone's beautiful home. The food was extraordinary. We had squab and for desert we had what they called "death by chocolate" which featured the famous chocolate and rosemary molten cakes that today are more widely known because of the food network. Have little children? This is a surprisingly good restaurant to go to! Had my 11th wedding anniversary meal here with my family. LOTS of Americans. Children had gotten sick and had to take them to a French hospital at first therefore did not show up until 10 PM for dinner. We were the last ones out. The servers were so friendly. The children chatted with them and fellow American diners. The food was amazing. And can't definitely say enough about their service. The execution of French food was quite traditional in technique but it's why we are there right? Decor was amazing. But friendly staff was what won me over. I had the risotto with frogs legs and not only was it perfectly cooked, but for someone with a less than adventurous palette, it was a fantastic first time eating frogs legs. Then I had the chicken which was a whole chicken cooked with mushrooms, a cute vegetable puree and tasty crostini. The wine selection was excellent as well. Dress code, jacket/suit required, no tie but the Jacket was required while i ate and this was during a massive heat wave so it was rather uncomfortable. Now for why i gave it 3 stars, for a restaurant that is 3 stars, i expected better food and service. Upon entering i was greeted by an army of waiters, pretty shoukd i said hello to 15 before being seated. They will constantly fill your plate when you are not even halfway done with your bread which when you are hungry and wait 90 minutes for food, you can end up eating a lot of bread. The bread itself were little 6 inch extremely tough, overcooked baguettes. We ordered two bottles during dinner that were never poured, they simply dropped the ball and it took several requests to get the red poured we ordered at the beginning, about 30-45 minutes. While the service was like a circus act of spinning hands, plate setting and food delivering, my wine glass sat empty after first finishing for 20 minutes. The chicken was alright, nothing special, perfectly cooked but i would not recommend it for 244 euro. The price was sky high, for the service and food i had mucb better experience and food at other restaurants. One of the best restaurants in Paris, hands down. I had such a superb meal here. I did a small tasting menu, starting with excellent beef tartare, amazing rabbit with vegetables, and two amazing desserts. The service was on point, but the restaurant did not have too much ambiance. It's okay to lack in ambiance when the food is so fantastic! read more
