We randomly stumbled into Relais Odéon as I was getting hangry and just needed some calories. A wise man once said "any port in a storm." We sat here on the cute little patio and I was completely unprepared when the server came so I just glanced at the menu and ordered the first thing that popped out at me. "Yeah I'll just do a porn star martini." We ordered some charcuterie and escargot as an ode to the ultimate French ambiance. My girlfriend loves escargot, but I'm convinced she just loves the rich butter infused with garlic and parsley. As I was ripping into this porn star martini, my gf got email confirmation that she had landed her first apartment in New York. What a moment. My friend and I had passed by this place two days ago and as Americans we were drawn in by the sign that said "Brunch on Sundays" so we decided to revisit on Sunday. In reality there was only three things on the "brunch menu" which was to be expected. Not knowing what to choose we went with the Egg Benedict au Bacon which was were prepared to perhaps not enjoy as much because we're used to the American take on it. But omg it was super delicious and flavorful. The sauce was perfect and even better paired w/ the bread and side of bacon. We stayed at the Hotel Relais St. Germain so we tried to eat at most of the Relais restaurants. As I wrote in my other review, we were disappointed to learn that some of the restaurants had been sold and were no longer part of the same business as the hotel. But we forged on... This was probably our least favorite of the three. That's not to say it was terrible. But it just was average in a city full of very good food. -We got the tartare, which was fine... served with a raw egg yolk on top whole, so you have to mix yourself. Portion was very generous and honestly was too big. -We got the shrimp roll appetizer, which was the best thing we got. Small and crispy, I could've eaten a bowl of those things. -And the terrine, which again was OK but I didn't finish it. If you enter from the east side of the street (next to the cute olive oil shop, it's much more quaint. Their food is very good and fairly friendly staff (who will annoyingly switch into English even if you speak French- yes, I know, they're trying to be nice, but when will waiters understand that if we want English, we'll ask!) I had the mushroom soup (cappuccino des cèpes) and salmon starter. I don't like mushrooms, but I was cold and it was actually quite nice. Dare I say this is my favorite restaurant in Paris...? First of all, Le Relais Odéon is super conveniently located. It's literally steps across the street from the Odéon métro stop and just around the corner from the lovely Saint Michel area. Saint Michel has pretty terrible food from my experience, so walk a few minutes and come here instead! The food is reasonably priced (for Paris) with a wide variety of meats, risotto, and even gluten free pasta. As a celiac, the food and location combined could not make this restaurant any better for me. The pasta with cherry tomatoes and greens has become a staple for me, rotating it with the creamy risotto. Both are so great and under 15€! But perhaps the best part of this place is the ambiance. You can look out onto the bustling street even from the tables inside. The waiters are super nice, and the decor makes you feel like you're at a classy restaurant without paying classy restaurant prices. Bonus: their half-off happy hour goes until 10 p.m. and has really strong and flavorful drinks! If you're in Paris and looking for a place to eat in the Saint Michel area, come here. And if you're a celiac like me, you can't miss the gluten free pasta -- it's a rare find in Paris! read more

This is a review not so much of the Odeon itself - a pleasant enough spot for a coffee on the way to elsewhere - but of the building that houses it. Hostory buffs will note that the most famous resident here was one M. Joseph-Ignace Guillotin, a French doctor, member of the 1789 Assemblée Constituante, and proponent of the Guillotine, the capital punishment device named after him. Some Paris guide books describe the good doctor as the author of the device and claim that he tested it in the passage behind this building on sheep destined for the tables of the local restaurants (that would be la Procope?). At any rate, he did not develop the device (credit for that goes to another Doctor Antoine Louis), but he might well have demonstrated it here. Dr. Guillotin, a humanitarian for his times, saw the device as only a first step towards the complete abolition of the death penalty. Unfortunately for him, and to the deep chagrin of his family, he instead became the very symbol of the bloodbath that ensued. read more

Visited this spot on my first night in Paris last September 2013. My travel buddy and I met up with some Parisian friends who brought us here. We sat outside on a somewhat cold, drizzly night...but that didn't matter...we were in PARIS! The waiter was nice and attentive. The 4 of us all ordered different glasses of wine...delivered to our table within minutes. Then we shared a creme brulee...it was good. While I did not dine inside, the exterior was nice and had adequate seating...if you enjoy "people watching" sit outside. It was somewhat pricey and there was overwhelming amounts of smoke (totally expected it)....but I enjoyed the service and overall atmosphere. I would go again. read more

We were staying in a hotel close by, and we wandered down the alley to this place on the first night of our trip. We got there early, so there were plenty of tables available. The alley is picturesque and great for people watching. The food (hamburgers, cheese, salad) was all fine. But the service was rough. When we arrived, we lingered in the front for a few minutes before someone came to seat us. Then he disappeared and, eventually, we flagged down a server. We didn't order much, but we didn't receive everything we ordered, including water that never came. When we finished, we spent about 10 minutes trying to get the attention of a server, any server so we could pay the bill. We probably spent more time getting the attention of the staff than we did eating or talking. read more

If you are a self-proclaimed foodie (face it, which foodie is not self-proclaimed) or you just enjoy eating tasty food, you'd want to avoid this place. This restaurant is not designed for people who like food but more for people who want to sit in a quaint little Parisian alley by St Michel/Odeon. The good thing is that the menu is small, so at least you wont be spending your time wondering whether it's because you made the wrong choices or because the food actually sucked. I came here for a business meal and we ordered a plate of charcuterie to share and the charcuterie was stale and tasted funky (supermarket charcuterie that's been sitting around for too long). I had a veal hanger steak (they dont ask you how you like it cooked. it comes out medium) and i opted to trade the blue cheese sauce with bearnaise. The sauce was delicious. I did not finish my steak, or my fries. It just wasn't good. The prices here are at least somewhat reasonable, hovering around 15 to 20 EUR for main dishes. Next door down at le pub st germain, expect the price to rocket 2x that. But then again, you're not here to eat, you're here to enjoy the atmosphere, so relax, enjoy some wine. After a lovely Mexican dinner at a nearby joint where along with great food we got absolutely fantastic service, my wife, me and our friend, went around looking for dessert. Our first choice was busy so we walked further down and ended up at Relais Odéon. Place seemed reasonably busy so we thought might be fine. The steward seemed friendly when we said we wanted only desserts, he found a table of 3 for us. But that's where the good part of the experience ended. First, when we ordered only two dishes, our server insisted that each of the three of us has to order something, pointing to my wife to ask if she wasn't going to eat anything. We didn't want to pick an argument even though he was rather rude in his mannerisms, so we said fine and ordered a third dish which we didn't really want. Upon request, the guy gave us glasses for water. As it so happened one of the glasses had dirty water in it. When I pointed the same out, I did not even get an apology but fortunately the server was kind enough to change the glass. The desserts were the worst I have had in my 4 days in Paris. Doesn't matter, I thought. Maybe we hadn't been thoughtful about the place. And so what if we had one bad food experience in 4 days. It wasn't a bad track record for Paris and our ability to pick restaurants. So with our desserts half done, I decided to ask for the cheque. The server's first question was if we had finished our desserts as he made to take our plates away. I simply reiterated, "please get our cheque." And his retort, in an absolutely rude tone - "I just asked you if you had finished." By now I was truly upset. Our friend was still having her tea and the fellow had no courtesy at all to notice that but was more keen to figure out if he could get rid of our plates and us. Still I decided it wasn't worth my while to engage in a verbal duel with such a person. We got up soon after paying the bill (after my friend had finished her tea). I stepped out first followed by our friend. My wife was still behind so our friend held the door open for her for maybe 10-15 sec. By this time the same friendly steward made a rude remark to her about keeping the door open. When she highlighted that she was waiting for my wife to come out and he didn't need to be rude, he launched into a tirade about other guests being inconvenienced. When I highlighted that there was no reason for him to be rude and mentioned that we had just got terrible service, he actually put his hand to the mouth and said - "blah blah blah.." When I highlighted that this behaviour was just not ok, he told me that I could raise my voice as much as I wanted (as if it mattered to him). By now the server, who was delivering some stuff to another table (I refuse to use the word serve for such a lousy fellow), got into the action and asked me what was the problem with the service. I highlighted the fact that I have never received a dirty glass anywhere till date and without even an apology. The dude insisted he had apologised and went on to say that if I now wanted him to clean my shoes he wasn't going to do it. My now I was aghast at their sheer rudeness. The steward made some remarks about maybe we should just get out of Paris. What I first thought was simply a case of bad service, by the end of it was turning into a rather nasty affair which I believe was more provoked by racist tendencies in the behalf of these two gentlemen. And I had totally forgotten about the pathetic desserts that we had been served. An establishment which hires such people and puts them out there to interact with customers, deserves no better than to be called out for such horrible service and such racist behaviour. Unfortunately there were a lot of smokers and we also encountered one aggressive man begging (he strolled between tables and who hassled us verbally and would not initially go away when we would not give him money). Waiter was attentive and food was very good. We had rabbit pate (Terrine de Lapin Madison) as an appetizer and very tender veal (Onglet de Veau) for a main course. Le Relais Odeon has a large footprint, with tables set up on the sidewalk as well as ajoining cobblestone alleys. Given it was a lovely evening, we chose one in the alley for it was a bit quieter and had a less frentic ambiance than those on the sidewalk. Our waiter displayed the typical French brusqueness, but was, nevertheless, quite efficient. The wine was a chardonnay, palatable, but not particularly memorable. Dinner was chicken accompanied by a asparagus risotto. Of the two, I wish I had more of the latter, as it was quite tasty indeed. All said & done, the question boils down to would I go back? We came here on a Wednesday evening, and while other restaurants -- that supposedly closed at midnight -- turned us away when we showed up at 11 pm (a whole hour before closing), this restaurant welcomed us in. We had a very friendly waiter and were greeted nicely by the other servers as well. FOOD: We had the mini cheese platter trio and the shrimp rissoto. Tasty and well prepared. We had dinner in one of our nights in Paris at Le Relais Odeon. We made reservations online which was very convenient. The restaurant is located on a busy corner in the Odeon area, which has a bunch of shops, bars and restaurants. We arrived and were greeted and seated immediately near the back of the restaurant. The decor of the place is a bit pub-like and was more casual than we expected. It looked like there was a nice outdoor area, but we were not offered a seat outside. The food was OK - I had the veal and my wife had the fusilli. Good but not memorable. The service took forever, even for Paris. Our waiter looked like he was serving every table in the restaurant, even outside. Because of the slow service, we skipped the dessert and went to the gelato place around the corner, which was fantastic! Nice place to have a casual bite to eat for a reasonable price. read more

We found this place during our walk looking for a place to have dinner. Got there about 7:30 PM and got a seat inside. Our waiter was exceptional and charming. The food was great. We (my wife and I) both had the black angus with fondants potatoes. The service was speedy and the food was great. For dessert, my wife had Cafe Gourmand and I had the House Apple Tart. Once again I'm surprised by the disparity of reviews for this Brasserie which for us provided a pleasant meal with exceptional service. My wife and I spotted Le Relais while seeking refuge from the rain. We initially simply wanted to hide under the extensive canopy and enjoy its view of the surrounding shops and streets. However once greeted by our waiter we elected to sample their menu. Granted it is simple, but the dishes provide a nice choice including the veal steaks I enjoyed and the lighter fare my wife loved with a salad topped by an egg. The staff let us enjoy a glacial pace to enjoy our meal, wine and coffees. The views, service and selection make this a spot worthy of a second look when shopping nearby. read more

Great spot - I actually landed here looking for Le Comptoir because the cab driver was lost (so was I) but must say this was a pleasant brasserie and I would return! The staff was friendly and greeted at the door. English was not a problem, food was good, price point was acceptable that if I lived in the area I could come more often to test out the food. As a party of 13, squeezed onto a table set for 8, we knew we were in for an uncomfortable experience, but at 9.30pm on a busy saturday evening, figured it might be the best we'd get. The waiters were exceptionally rude pushing past and knocking me constantly, complaining we were in the way, even though they had sat us in this location. This is a great typical French brasserie for lunch/ snacks and drinks. We popped in during a rainstorm and were so pleased we did. Tapas option was perfect for heavy app in lieu of lunch and house Rose was delish and cheap. The kids had frites(of course) that were perfectly cooked.
