I don't remember if I've ever written a review for Schum, so I'm doing it now. I found this place through Yelp a few months ago, and I'm thankful for those that reviewed it before me. I have been going to Schum almost once a week for the last 6 months, and usually for lunch. They always have selection of three a plats du jour. No matter what I've ordered, it was always good. Fish. Steak. Duck. All good and all nice portions. You will not walk out hungry. My favorite is that with the plat du jour, you can order a café (thé) gourmand (café or tea plus 3 mini desserts - usually come with a financier, a type of mousse, and a créme brulée). The cost for the main dish and dessert is 17€. Can't beat it. The main server/bartender is very nice and his helper/server is also cordial. I recommend that you come when they first start serving lunch, so you beat the crowd. Once the crowd is there, the service slows down quite a bit. So if you don't come early, be prepared to be there to stay at least 1,5 hours for lunch. read more

One of the best dinners we've had while vacationing in Paris France. Although it was quite a distance from our hotel, we were able to walk and find it easily. We got there and it seemed like it was a neighbourhood diner, the host/owner greeted and seated us in a quiet corner. They had the daily specials written on the posted blackboard, there was the Steak frites, fish and chips, and duck. My spouse and I both decided to try the steak frites. When our order came, we were surprised with the generous servings. We both polished off everything on our plate including the basket of bread that they served us. The steak was done to perfection and I swear the fries are hand cut and made fresh, it was crispy outside and soft inside. Although the host can not speak very much English and we can not speak very much French, we were able to communicate and understand each other. Even when he was busy with the local crowd, he did not forget about us. This is a quaint little restaurant with superb food and excellent service. I highly recommend it, and would definitely go back in a heart beat. The price was 19. Euros for an order of steak frites, and 4.50 Euros for a glass of wine, which was very reasonable compared to other restaurants we've been to. read more

What a great treat! We were the only non-French diners, I believe, and it had a great vibe! It kind of felt like everyone's favorite neighborhood restaurant. While the caliber of the cuisine was not on par with some of our other stops on the trip, it was excellent and honest. Prices were stunningly low - by any comparison. We purchased a €35 bottle of St. Emilion that was a solid - excellent- wine and our meal came out to under €80. Service was on par with most restaurants we've been to in France - definitely different than in the States. That said, we're not in the States! Schum was a delightful restaurant with delicious food and a warm, relaxed atmosphere. There was no English menu, but the waitress translated very well. Be sure to try the specials of the day! Solid, cleanly plated, well seasoned, French plates du jour without the stuffy atmosphere or sticker shock. My wife had fish with a celery puree that had really balanced flavors. I had duck confit that was very mild with super crispy skin and potatoes. It's a nice, casual place with a hand written menu on blackboards and inverted colors for the place settings. Extra points to a nice and friendly server who explained the French menu in spoken English. Also, while some travel sources recommend budget French meals under $20, this easily comes in under without breaking a sweat. read more

Decided to visit this quaint restaurant a few minutes away from our airbnb. The reviews suggested a good meal at a reasonable cost. There was no crowd at 2pm on a Wednesday afternoon. I ordered the fish fillet with vegetables and mash potatoes and my wife ordered the steak and fries. Both dishes were good but the steak was better from a flavoring perspective. After our meal, they served their cafe gourmand (expresso + creme brule + apple sauce + bite sized pound cake) and the whole meal cost us 32 euros! What a deal and a good meal. Great value for money. Lunch: Very easy traditional "plat du jour" + dessert + coffee+ smile of the owner for 15€, that's all we want. Definitely a good place to have a good lunch around the place de l'etoile, without being lost in the middle of a zillion tourist. I definitely recommend. read more

Enjoyed the food here!!! Drinks were a little pricey compared to the food. We ordered two cocktails, a champagne (10 euros each), pork filet w mustard, Thai salad, and a salmon dish. I would pass on the salad but both the entrees were delicious and a steal at 15 euros each. My mother is wanting to go back there for more of their salmon even though we only have a few days in Paris to try everything! Found this place on Yelp almost two years ago on a trip to Paris. My sister had her first steak tartare here, and it did not disappoint. Food was great, ambience is cozy, spot is off the tourist-beaten path. A good place to check out before painting the town red. Will definitely come back the next time we're in Paris. read more

Great food! I had a butternut squash soup and a foie gras terrine and both were delicious! Very reasonable prices and good range of prices (mains from €14 to €22). Very nice staff as well, I was there on my own and they made me feel very comfortable. Quite a simple place, not the most cosy ambiance so maybe not it if you re after a romantic dinner place but perfect if you re looking for good food in a relaxed atmosphere in the neighborhood! read more

Except for the fact that there was no air condition and the guests who were there before us didn't want the doors open this was a wonderful place. The steak frites were delicious! The sauce was perfect! Specially when dipped with the amazing French bread! Despite a small Bourgogne wine list the wine was wonderful! Sweet place with great food and service! read more

Délicieuse! This was the best meal we had during our week stay in this Paris neighbourhood. The chef-owner was a kind jolly friar tuck sort of guy with a lovely smile and an obvious love and pride for good food and wine. The daily menu is small, basically we could choose from a few starters and then a salmon, beef or duck main. I had the velouté d'asperge and the dos de salmon et legumes and my BF had the smoked salmon Thai salad and the beef with pommes de terres dauphinoise. All delicious. The bottle of cote-du-rhone he chose for us was yummy and affordable. Actually, the whole meal was very affordable. We came here seeking a prix fixe lunch experience slightly off the beaten path, and we were not disappointed. I chose the halibut brandade, not quite knowing what to expect, but it turned out to be a tasty (and new for me) preparation in which the fish was whipped into potatoes. I was staying at the hotel across the street, inParis for business. The hotel I was staying in, across the street, was as tired as I was. At 10:00, when I walked into Schum, the owner, Pierre, greeted me pleasantly and simply. I saw the steak frites on the board and requested that and a Belgian beer. The steak was impeccably pan fried in rich butter, and the frites equally perfect. After eating, I had another beer and pleasant conversation with a regular. The next night, I stopped in at midnight, seeing Pierre and his regular patron still there. Had a glass of fine wine and good conversation. The third night, I knew where I would have dinner. Pierre told me three options. I chose the pork with lentils, that was exquisite. This time, along with the regular, there was another frequent patron, who comes from Sydney periodically and stays fresh r months at a time. And, he has known the regular for years by virtue of coming to Schum. Did I mention that Pierre does not charge tourist prices. But I would have paid double in hindsight. A dozen tables, pleasant service, outstanding food and company. Whether you stay at the Ritz or a hostel, you should come here. This is authentic. read more
