It was my birthday and the hubby and I were strolling the streets of Paris looking for a late lunch. We took a side street to avoid the busy main drag and walked by Harry's. My husband suddenly stopped and said I don't know why but I feel like we should go into this place. I reminded him it was a bar and we were looking for food. He isn't a big drinker but said let's have a drink here. Once inside we were welcomed by the friendly bartender. We found out Harry's started in NYC and the owner relocated to Paris. They were having a mock election for the upcoming US elections and being Americans we were able to cast a "ballot". They count the results every Friday and update the score. The local news was featuring a news segment about it and we got interviewed! It was a fun experience! Now on to the drinks...they make all the classic cocktails but also can concoct pretty much anything. I tried their Sidecar. They used Remy Martin 1738 and it justified the €16 price. My husband tried the Monet, Monet, Monet! which had a tequila base (can't remember what kind but it was a higher end tequila). It was creamy and smooth. I could have sat here all day and drank French 75s on the hour. The ambiance is super sexy but laid back, great booth and table seating, fantastic bar staff, and of course - the cocktails are perfection. This is a can't miss stop during your Paris trip. I was lucky to be staying very nearby so this was an easy stop. It could be because I know that this is a bar that Hemingway and other people who's writing was historic drank here. When I go in there, I get very flustered. Most other people will not have that problem. The service is cold, and hard, and very French. You don't come here because it's a great bar. You come here because of its reputation. I went here with a friend at the recommendation of the hotel we were staying. We walk in and there were plenty of seats. I was told by the bartender they were full and to wait outside. That is poor business. I don't know if it was because we weren't French that they said that, which is offensive because if that was done in the US, I am sure people wouldn't like it. But we told our hotel and they will not be recommending this place. I am not sure what kind of business they run over here that they do not allow paying customers when there is plenty of room. Thrilled I was able make it to this famous and historical spot! They have the most handsome bartenders ever. Must be a qualification to work there! Great service too. Martini was exceptional. For several years I was an expatriate, living in Singapore, and, during those years, I would frequent the Red Dot in Boat Quay as my expat watering hole where I'd meet bankers and travelers from my corner of the world on the other side of it and taste that fleeting comradery that floated through a pint of suds. Harry's has the exact smack of that joint with plenty to spare. And sure I spent too much time trailing the walls for the logo of my schoolboy days while I sipped an old fashioned concocted the exact way I'd have expected in any midtown haunt or Georgetown drinkery I'd spend a few dozen minutes at while knowing my hearth and home wasn't on the other side of a giant blue expanse that would require such a deliberate effort to traverse I'd never accomplish the task without a clear mind and resolve of someone who wasn't selecting bourbons and contemplating chips and not thinking about their old friends and kin, quarter or a half turn around this planet we inhabit, and merely living a true moment that had nothing and everything to do with why they found themselves so far away and brooding in a bar amongst comrades who also leapt off the edge of their origins in search of that intangible yet ever so important moment even if it meant scouring the earth inclusive of Harry's in Paris and looking into the bottom of a glass. read more

Harry's was stop number 3 or 4 and once we tasted those drinks we stayed for a few more! The birthplace of the French 75!!! Possibly the Bloody Mary but that's always under debate lol. How amazing it was to be in a bar where the greats spent their time. Fitzgerald, Hemingway, Picasso, Coco Chanel and more. The cocktails were absolute perfection. Deliciously well-crafted drinks. The prices were actually not bad at all and comparable to what we spend at cocktail bars at home. The staff were so talented, knowledgeable and nice. Loved the decor of this place too. It was great to see banner flags from schools like CMU and Penn State. It was also fun to sit there with our drinks and daydream about the fun it must have been when the greats were regulars. To be honest, we didn't get the hype of this place. Maybe it was an off day. It definitely felt like a tourist trap. We were happy we checked it out because of it being historical, but that was about it. The Bloody Mary's were meh at best. It was super stuffy (and not full of people) and reeked of sewage, but we did one round and then moved on. Got lost again in Paris and had a couple of folks tell me about this place. The pink neon cursive signs lured me into a crowded linear bar so I made a quick descent down to the restroom after the extensive Lime scooter ride through the city with nowhere to go. (Highly suggest getting lost on an electric scooter or bike ride through Paris). As I exited the bar I found a downstairs bar with a coin laden cash register at the enterance. The red velour searing and dark mahogany walls appointed with appropriate black and white framed US nostalgia was comforting and at the bar 'Arthur' standing at the ready. Stopping in for a drink while wandering around the city of light was just what we needed while looking for a place for dinner. The outside of the bar had this "old school" bar feel and when we opened the door to take a peek on our way to lunch we knew this was the pit stop on the way back. As soon as you walk in it's hard not to notice the "American" memorabilia hanging on the walls, from colleges to police precincts to the military. This would have been four stars but we weren't the only Americans there and when I'm in Paris the last thing I want to see is another countryman. Even with Herb Caen long gone, I'd conjured in my head an appealling scene straight out of Woody Allen's "Midnight in Paris", with me and every known SF celeb engaged in a boozy and spirited rendition of Auld Lang Syne. However, being a massive Bloody Mary fan, I had to stop in when I heard this was the origin of the beloved breakfast cocktail (although I've also heard it was created in NY, who knows). It was right around the block from our hotel, which was very convenient. We plopped down by the bar and admired the décor (definitely NY pub style). I'm not sure how much of the bar is New York, other than the prices. We came in for a drink around 6:30 on a Friday and the place was packed. They managed to find us a table for 5 downstairs. The ambiance is fun, the decor is something out of the prohibition era and the service is great. We ordered old fashions. They do use the luxardo cherries instead of the bright red maraschino cherries. Kudos for that. 16 Euros each for the drinks. Pretty tasty. You won't be disappointed. They allow the kid in bars in Paris, so he had a hotdog. He said "it's the best hotdog I've ever had". If you're looking for a bar, you should consider coming in here just for the experience. read more

It's a shame they bill this as the place where Gershwin composed "An American In Paris" since the mentioned piano is a Yamaha and I'm pretty sure that brand wasn't around then. Besides, the keyboard is perfectly bright white. Travelled a long way to see the real thing but...wha-wha, complete misleading info. Place was dead too even at rush hour after work. While my wife and I were having an excellent dinner at Gambino, we met these two lovely, older ladies (cousins) from South Carolina and Maryland sitting at the next table. I told them about Harry's Bar, which was a few blocks away. They wanted to go check it out with us, but we had just started eating, while their wine bottle emptied. I knew they were inebriated because they were telling us to finish eating, so I gave them the directions and told them we would meet them there. I had read a lot about Harry's Bar. I knew its history. I knew who frequented the place, and I loved it. Going inside, you're living in the 1920's. I had no luck in finding my alma mater's, Long Beach State, pennant but realized that the university was established in 1949. I did see some cool pictures of Hemingway kicking a football. The best part of Harry's was the downstairs piano bar, which was a very intimate room with great music (George Gershwin played there). We did find the ladies there, who were saving us a seat at their table. The barman couldn't have been more than 20 years-old, but he made me an excellent Sidecar (which was invented there). The cocktails are obviously a little pricey, but you don't go there to get gassed (which is what happened to the ladies), you go there for the ambiance, the history, and the experience. Harry's is like the Fenway Pahk of bahs, like you're walking into a museum. I hope to return soon. read more

I was terribly disappointed by our visit last night - mostly because of the service and the fact that the waiter tried to charge us twice for our drinks. When I called him out on the fact that my friends had already paid for their drinks and should be removed from my bill - he lied and told me he gave them their money back which was not true. When I pushed him on this - he finally asked me if I wanted that money back. Are you serious? Although it took time to get a table for two, the complimentary bar snacks and tremendously friendly staff more than made up for the wait. We went to Harry's for their famous Bloody Mary's. My DH said it was the best he ever had but I wasn't as impressed. There was only 1 bartender with a packed bar. Many came in only to turn around because there was no room to have a drink. The bartender was very pleasant and delivered our drinks to the table. Yup, we saw many of our local teams' pendants on the walls. It's a touristy NY bar but worth a trip when visiting Paris. read more
