I'm not a pate or foie gras sort of gal, so the Richelieu et al weren't my favorites. However, the salmon with potatoes,cabillaud, and oysters were pretty darn tasty.Not go out of your way tasty, but tasty if you're in the area. This was one of our favorite restaurants of a 2 week trip. This is the oldest restaurant in Paris and we booked a table well in advance. Café Procope is the oldest cafe in Paris. Some state it is the first café in the whole world. It was opened in 1686 by the Sicilian Francesco Procopio dei Coltelli. This prestigious place, founded in 1686 by Francesco Procopio dei Coltelli, welcomed such famous patrons as Voltaire, Danton, Robespierre, Molière, Diderot and Benjamin Franklin. After reading all these reviews and reports of the first place in Paris to serve coffee, I had to visit. but of course! I find the spot on a cold, wet day in Paris. I hurry inside to a very fancy restaurant. I check to make sure I had found the right place, and indeed I had. A beautiful staircase takes you upstairs, where you can see old mirrors, original letters from Louis the 16th and Marie Antoinette and one of Napoleon's hats. I had only wanted a cup of coffee, but I was so enchanted with the rich decor I opted for the set lunch. I sat at a corner table by the window and enjoyed the surroundings. Lots of other tourists were there taking pictures of decor and food, which was a little annoying but not disruptive. The set lunch was HUGE by Parisian standards and a good price, 22 euros for French Onion soup, Almond encrusted fish (so light, to die for) and the biggest helping of Crème brûlée I have ever had. This restaurant has been operating since the late 1600s, which, as an American, is a date I find hard to fathom (since in the U.S. it's a big deal if a restaurant has been around a hundred years). Our friend from Paris chose this spot for our last lunch in town, since it was the hangout of some of our forefathers (including Benjamin Franklin when he was the ambassador to France). This venerable place, having been around for so long, was pretty seamless when it came to service; in fact as is often the fact in such an establishment, the wait staff were a bit intimidating. My meal was, honestly, uneven: awesome onion soup, but unmemorable Cornish hen with farfalle pasta. For dessert I chose a framboise-soaked pear, which was unusual though the flavor became a bit one-note after a while. My mother made the better choice with the creme brulee, which was HUGE; she kept urging me to have bites. The voluptuous vanilla creaminess overlaid with the crackling crispness of the sugar crust was the perfect balance. Decor is old-world upscale (heavy wood, dark walls, chandeliers, portraits). Be sure to visit the restrooms and see the gold toilet seats (as in "would-match-a-gilt-framed-painting" gold). Now that's classy. read more

Came here with a group of 4 people for dinner. Starters arrived quickly and were quite tasty (especially the egg with morels). However we then waited for about 45 minutes for the main course without any attempts by the staff to acknowledge/address this. When arrived, some dishes were just cold. Desserts were good, but not particularly impressive (e.g., panna cotta arrived in an awkward jar with large pieces of biscuit over the top - probably better suited for a breakfast as a diner). Obviously the historical aspect of this restaurant is hard to beat, but does not reach full potential as a far as food and service. read more

After 4 days of biking from London to Paris, was very much looking forward to a celebratory dinner at Le Procope. And they didn't disappoint! With our party of 20, we booked an upstairs private room. Service was exceptional and the wine, well the wine was fantastic (Pessac-Léognan Bordeaux). The room had a couple of small balconies that overlooked the street which on a perfect summer night made the event even more memorable. For dinner, we had the salmon tartare, veal medallions and profiteroles for desert. All were outstanding and the booze hasn't dampened my recollection. Le Procope is one of the finest restaurants in Paris that lives up to it's historic name. To start, the building itself is a beautiful work of art that transports the patron to 17th Century France when this restaurant was first founded! The red walls, gold trims, wrought iron railings, white linens and a plethora of high class decor exemplifies fine dining. Walking through the narrow hallways, diners are treated to antique displays and historic articles as if one were walking through a museum. The service is exceptional with friendly greeters and servers who do not exhibit any condescension. The servers are very knowledgeable and are responsive to all your needs. As you walk through the restaurants, you are greeted by all you come across. The highlight, is of course, the food! Everything is cooked perfectly, without any oversaturation of salt or seasoning. The meats and fish are cooked to the perfect temperature making plates tender but not dry. The flavors are strong but not overwhelming. A perfect example is the Coq Au Vin which was incredibly tasty and the meat easily extracted itself from the bones without any help. The 3 Michelin Starred Sole Meunière was heavenly, steeped in flavor and aroma. What a wonderful meal! We were actually worried about the service because we'd read some reviews about the staff being rude, but that was not our experience at all. We were served by a waiter that was absolutely wonderful. The place has amazing history, and the table where we sat was actually a regular choice of Jacques Chirac. There was a shelf behind me with stunning old books and notebooks that they let me peruse. The food was GORGEOUS, and the prices more than reasonable. I recommend it with all my heart! read more

I visited Le Procope alone on the second day I was in Paris before my friend flew in. The main purpose for visiting this cafe was for it's rich history, and it was also part of my "historical walk" that began from St Germaine. Colorful from the outside you see portraits of Bonaparte, Franklin and many others who has often visited this cafe since the 1600. That in itself was exciting and interesting. The servers speak English although I tried at first in French and they also have English menus as well in case you're worried about that. Dining at Le Procope was on my "to do" list of activities for my trip to Paris, and I must say that I was not disappointed. It was quite a thrill for me to visit the oldest continuously running restaurant in Paris, especially when taking into account all of the famous patrons of this establishment over the years (ie: Victor Hugo, Voltaire, Thomas Jefferson) as well as its historical significance. It's rumored to be one of the places where the French Revolution was planned, and is where many writers and philosophers gathered to discuss, think and write. It's where Benjamin Franklin began preparations for a Franco-American alliance and where Diderot allegedly wrote his Encyclopédie. As I sat at my table awaiting my meal, I couldn't help being in awe of the fact that I was sitting where so many historical events were planned and literary achievements made. My only complaint would be that it took what I regarded as a bit too long to be seated considering that I had a reservation, but aside from that I had no quibbles with my experience. The hostess and waiter were both courteous, so I cannot complain about the customer service. A friendly couple sitting at the table next to mine struck up a conversation with me, which was appreciated as I had traveled to Paris alone; it was one of several interactions I had during my trip that helped alleviate any solitude I might've been feeling during my travels, and admittedly probably contributed towards my fondness for Le Procope. As far as the food, it was my first time trying coq au vin and I was exceedingly pleased with it; it actually made me regret never having tried it earlier in life, but I suppose I must resort to using the clichéd idiom "better late than never." Although I would've liked to have ordered some dessert, between the coq au vin, the complimentary bread, and a large bottle of Vittel, I was quite replete. After a tiring day of exploring the Palace of Versailles and its massive gardens, I was understandably famished and this was the ideal place to unwind and enjoy a tasty meal. Making reservations would probably be a good idea as it seemed pretty crowded when I was there. Its location is ideal as it's not far from the Seine and Ile de la Cite, so you don't have to worry about inconveniencing yourself by having to travel far out of your way to get there. Being centrally located in Paris only makes it that much easier for tourists and travelers to treat themselves to a meal at the most historical significant restaurant in Paris. To conclude, I'll say that planning to dine at Le Procope is a worthwhile consideration to make, whether you're a history buff or simply someone who'd enjoy the novelty of dining in an iconic Parisian café. read more

In 15 years of coming to France, with the exception of one slightly surly cabbie, we had never had the stereotypical French restaurant experience. We even had a waiter from L'os a Moelle call out to us the next day as we were walking through a park, and introduce us to his girlfriend! THAT was our typical experience. We dress nicely, we try to speak French, we say please and thank you, we speak quietly ... and that seemed to be respected by the staffs at the places we've gone. Until last night at Procope. The hostess couldn't be bothered to be friendly and put us in a bizarre seating area. The waiter was condescending, interrupted me as I was speaking, and treated us like tourists from the start. But glad to say, there was ONLY a start. After the waiter pretended he had never heard of a dry martini served up - that is, in a martini glass - we left. We knew it was going to go downhill. Here's what I'd tell the owners of Procope: We left your restaurant and went and happily spent a couple hundred Euro at La Societé, where the hostesses greeted us with smiles, the bartender Johan listened to our order and made four (!) perfect dry martinis, served up - and even brought a special champagne drinks to our table later - and where the waitress Julia was charming and professional. The kitchen turned out some tasty food as well. Your other old-school competitors, Deux Magots and Bofinger, also cater to tourists, but have the self-respect to be professional. Ditto for the young staff at the new-school Les Botanistes, and the folks who run A la Biche au Bris. Ironically, we had spent the day on a food and history walking tour (by Le Food Tour) meeting your other competitors - the young Turks selling the most delicious French food I've ever tasted. Polmard beef, cheeses, chocolate, bread. People who take pride in their work. I don't predict that these makers and restaurants will put you out of business, because you can still make tourist money on your historic name, but you'd think you'd have some self-respect for the great French food tradition. Why didn't I complain at your restaurant? Because I want a good meal and a good experience when I go out to dinner; I don't want to have to teach you your job. By the way, I hate reviewers who disparage restaurant decor as "dated." It's ridiculous criteria. But Procope is positively shabby. I was super disappointed with this restaurant. Walking by I loved the rustic French decor. The service was decent, but the food was not good! 3 stars to be nice..... Oysters were very salty, and maybe I'm spoiled with the west coasts delicious varieties, but those were hard to eat. I had the 3 course meal with the pork tenderloin entree, the meat was so very tough, dry and over salted. I SO WANTED to like this place. The hostess seemed nice (especially since my French is so dusty), but that's where the charm ended aside from the interior decor. *sigh* I was the first guest, the only American, the only single person (that I can tell) I'm not sure what happened, but it took forever to get me some water, then forever to order, then forever for oysters, then they forgot my scallops and even tried to charge me for them. The gentleman who was in a full black suit appeared to be the manager- he didn't even offer an apology and apparently didn't care one bit that the service and food were not up to par. This literally just happened. I made an online reservation abt a wk ago, requested to sit outside- my rsvp was for 12pm when they open- there is no excuse. It took them 20 mins to get to me: they served other guests first- I thought that maybe it's because they're serving groups first. Who knows. I spoke up and asked the waiter (close cropped hair very thin and pale) if there was a reason why everybody was served before me, and if it was because I'm american. I know...silly american moment. But I can't help but think this when this is the third place I've experienced something similar. Well, I guess it didn't matter that they never offered to make it because I had to be somewhere for 2pm anyway. It shouldn't take 1.5 hrs for oysters and scallops with veggies- oh yea they forgot the scallops smh I tried speaking French. While in Paris I took my daughter to Le Procope to celebrate her birthday. We started off with their house salad with mixed greens, tomato, foie gras and duck breast. Salad tasted great, especially a few little pieces of duck breast was delicious. As for the main course we ordered beef tartar and Calf's head. The server told us that calf's head is not the actual head but the skin around the face. And this was one of their specialty foods so we decided to try it. The calf's head was cooked like stew and it had carrots and potatoes. The meat tasted okay; however, It was too rich for my diet and was mostly fat. I really did not know what to expect. Beef tartar had good flavor but found the meat a little stringy. Their sampler dessert was nothing special. Excellent service. Overall, I would give 3.5 stars. read more

The decor and venue is just so charming where modern retouches only highlight the nostalgia of this antique establishment. We're from the USA slowly making our way to Parisian life and of course we dine super early ...that said we always get the luxury of having a place to ourself for a bit before it gets rambunctious. And boy is this place going to get filled. We made reservations and snogged a good seat surrounded by books and other beautiful pieces from days of yonder .... The food was good! I had the 100 day old casserole. It was pretty good. But the broth man...that broth conjured all my holy spirits because it was perfect for a cold rainy day. The chicken was braised perfectly. Literally fell off the fork as our server gently placed it out of the casserole onto my plate. Absolutely delicious. My fille got the scallops risotto and loved it! I really loved this restaurant because it is just super cozy and comfortable. You can feel the history. I loved the graciousness of the restaurant staff who let you tour the historical rooms which where frequented by artists and intellectuals since its inception as the first cafe in Paris in 1686. It is said that Benjamin Franklin, then the Ambassador to France, worked on the US Constitution here. Napoleon's hat was left to pay off his debt to the restaurant's owner. The food is solid French cuisine nothing over the top but good. I think my Italian waiter was new. He seemed a little nervous and it made me feel a little rushed to eat which is very rare in Europe. This was a nice restaurant for lunch. I had the fixed price option with a root vegetable soup, chicken with pasta and a truffle sauce, and crème brûlée which was all very tasty. I loved that they serve Roederer Brut by the glass. Of course, I had to have an espresso at the first coffee shop to serve coffee in porcelain in Paris which was the birth of the French café culture in Paris. Prior to this, coffee had only been sold in the streets. Legend goes that writer/philosopher/historian Voltaire drank 40-100 espressos here a day mixed with chocolate to take off the edge. The customers where a mix of tourist and long-time patrons. The restaurant is larger than it looks with several intimate beautiful rooms which would be nice for groups. In Paris, where great dining experiences abound, I am surprised by all the favorable reviews. Our experience was painful and so dissatisfying. Came in early, ( we Americans do eat early!). Clearly a tourist trap trap with a long history. I ordered the 3 course menu with the leeks as in cream sauce as an app, the trout as the main and dessert. Hubs had the same but no dessert. Service was beyond slow and spotty. Female server acted exasperated at every turn. It never was clear who was responsible for what. Leeks were tasty but clearly had just come out of Avery cold frig; trout was room temp and dessert..who knows...never happened and voila there came the check. It just felt like I was witnessing a hot mess of disorganization and rudeness. A really lousy experience all around is a city known for great food and service. read more

Dirty, Filthy, and there where rats and mice! We ended up eating here, it was late. The food was ok, rather boring. Went to the bathroom and was surprised how dirty it was for a fine dinning restaurant. got back to my table and we saw about 3 to 5 rats running around the dinning room. Jump up on our chairs and screamed. the staff laughed. Crazy. Wanted to leave and they insisted we pay for our dinner which we had just started. The manager said he would call the police. Wanted to get out of there as soon as possible so I paid. Now, I regret it but we where tired. As we where waiting for the check , 3 mice crawled up the table. We where so freaked out . We had incorrectly assumed that the restaurant would be firstly not welcoming as it looks upscale. Secondly being in the tourist zone we wrongly assumed as well that the food would be terrible and overpriced. Well, as said above, we were incorrect on all counts. The staff from hostesses to waiters were all not only polite and welcoming but jovial. The surroundings look upscale, however, the attitudes are pretty low key. Perhaps they have decided to appeal to the tourist crowd of which the percentage was high. But there were also many locals mixed in with us tourists although there is an upstairs dining room where many perhaps chose to reserve instead of dining with us tourists. In any event, it's all a matter of the staff and food that are important. We chose the Precope menu for 38.50 euro and honestly this is alot cheaper than what we pay for our meals at home. For instance, dining out nowadays in SF can set one back just $40 for a main. So this was a great deal. And it just wasn't one choice each of starter, main, and dessert either. You get a few choices each so it was really really a bargain. All I can say is that the food all tasted first rate, they gave good portions. Couldn't fault our meals one bit. I was in Paris for a few days recently and on the hunt for my favorite Paris meal ever since I am 5 years old: sole meuniere. I am French but no longer living there, so it is very important for me to get my sole 'fix' whenever I am in Paris because they just don't make them like they do in Paris ANYWHERE in the world! I happened to walk by this place (I've known of it, of course, it's a classic, but I had never been) and I thought, why not? Sole was indeed on the menu. I was expecting to be surrounded by lots of tourists, but actually it was all French people in there. I was also stunned by the beauty of the place. Andddd: my sole was phenomenal! Service was very friendly, too. I really really recommend it: it is not as cliche / touristy as one might believe!
