We tried this place for dessert tonight and they totally ripped us off. My partner and I ordered a profiteroles dessert which was described on the menu as three puff pastry filled with ice cream and covered with hot chocolate sauce and toasted almonds. The price on the menu was €10.90 for three. They only gave us two, there was barely any ice cream in them, maybe a small teaspoon each, the sauce was cold and there were barely any almonds on it. Plus, we ordered a "fresh lemonade" that was supposed to be "house made" which ended up being sprite with a half slice of lemon, it was gross. When we got back to our hotel room, we noticed they charged us €11.90 for the dessert. Don't patronize this restaurant unless you want bad food and be taken advantage of. read more

A lot of people talking about this restaurant. I am French and speak fluently. I make a reservation early, we arrive they give a table by the gutter I talk to my wife about it she speak only English. So in a nice French way ask the gentleman in charge if we can have a another table, he put us inside with no choice and basically said if I did not like it I can go to other place. We sit down order wine appetizer and ask our waiter some suggestions and go with nice beef ask to be medium rare and it came blue rare. I mean cold in a middle. We try to stop our waiter many times and he never asked how we were doing or if our food was okay. We don't eat the meat, no waiter nothing happens a lot frustration at this time. We ask 10 times for our bill nothing came. I was ready to walk out my wife stop the server and he give us some kind of look who trigger a very animated French conversation. He tells me "maybe you want it for free you can not afford this restaurant". We paid and left. So if I was you I will not go not for the food or service I can t imagine for the tourist who don t speak French how you will be treated. No excuse for treating people in this way. read more

It started off great with the starters. The goat cheese was superb as well as the snails! Hopes were high for the mains as this seemed to be a place that could handle steaks and meat. Lamb ribs can hardly ever go wrong and ordering the butchers choice must be epic? Well...not really. Lamb ribs were as well done as can be and the butchers choice seemed to be "whatever the butcher had left over". On top of the poor meat experience we didn't get any sauce and we didn't get our side salads as we ordered. When commenting on this we got one of our salads and one small cup of sauce. So we had to get their attention again about the sauce and the salad which ended up in one more sauce but no salad. At this point the meat was cold and barely eatable. Delicious Filet Steak in a traditional Parisian setting: We went for a late dinner with a very big group of friends (we had made reservations in advance), early on in the week. Service was pretty fast and delightful. We started off with some planches charcuterie to share. I would have liked more pickles on it and as I am not generally a fan of cold cuts and white baguette bread, I did prefer the goat cheese we had near the end of our meal. I had ordered the filet steak for the main dish, medium. The meat was very tasty, soft on the inside and nicely grilled on the outside. The sides, potatoes and green beans, were ok. I had asked for an alternative, but you cannot expect special service and particularly healthy options in a traditional French restaurant in the Les Halles area. So I made do with what they had paired the meat with. I think all the meat dishes come with a selection of sauces - or maybe we got all of them as we were so many.I really liked the onion sauce. For dessert, I had ordered the café gourmand. I was pleasantly surprised to find that one of the three accompanying patisseries was an 'Ile Flottant' (a soft meringue floating in a vanilla custard sauce). One of my friends had the creme brûlée and I did steal a spoonful, it was quite yummy. Most of us had ordered the chocolate profiteroles. That portion looked so huge (three profiteroles with vanilla ice-cream), it could serve as a whole meal. . . If you are looking for a very French restaurant experience and you are hungry, especially if you wish to eat meat, this is definitely a place to go to. There are, however, many similar restaurants, even within walking distance - so it depends on what area you like best and what price-range you are looking for (I prefer smaller spots in different areas of Paris). I dined here twice. I would definitely go back if I were ever in Paris again. I ordered the Meat in Red Wine Sauce .... it was cooked to perfection. The meat melts in your mouth and the red wine sauce ....I sopped that up with my bread ... by the way they give you a lot of bread. The roasted duck and chicken salad is the best I've ever had. My friend ordered a pork entree, it was good but he enjoyed my dish a lot more than his. I think he complained that it was a bit on the dry side. The second time around three (3) of us ordered cote de boeuf and one (1) ordered four roasted rib of lamb. I would love to say that it was good ... but I can't for the mere fact the meats were well overdone. I figure they assumed americans like their meats well done, even though we asked for medium. The servings are large, an entree definitely can be shared. Overall, I had a great dining experience. What I love about dining here is that we never felt rushed to leave. If you are a meat lover this is the place to go. Just order your meat "red" so that it is not well done and chewy. read more

I wish there was a minus for the rating because 1 star is still too much for the way we were served, the quality of the food and our waiter. The only good part was the wine. What happened to you ? I use to come every month but I think this is the last time ever. Hadn't had a good piece of protein since arriving in Europe for a few days. Went with a search on Yelp and found this gem that didn't disappoint on both value and flavor. First, their are no English menus...but the waiter who helped us and who is representative of this steakhouse (big burly rough bear kind of guy) was the best host . He suggested the right compliments to help make everything go together perfectly. Escargots in the shell is always a good thing. There's is perfect and enjoyed with the pieces of baguette. The rib steak was cooked perfectly and had the most amazing crust but still so tender. Frites were crispy (my preference) and green beans. I didn't get a picture of the creme brûlée at the end because it was devoted before I knew it. I'll assure you that the custard was silky smooth with the right hint of vanilla and the brûlée crust not to overwhelming. A perfect "meat" meal! read more

A great traditional steakhouse in Les Halles area. Many different cuts of beef & served with some sides. I had the Merlan which was described as a lean & flavorful cut. It was tasty & quite large - probably 6-8 ounces. My boyfriend had the beef tenderloin & liked it a lot. We saw another guest who was served the " spit of the butcher ". That was huge! For desserts, there are classics like crème brûlée and Dame blanche (vanilla ice cream with chocolate source). Overall, it was a great French meal in a classic setting. The name Louchébem comes from the slang for " butcher " in the language used by the butchers in Les Halles back when the original food market was open. read more

We went to Chez George to celebrate my teenager's 16th birthday because we love Julia Child. Noone answer the phone so we thought we would just go there and I discovered it was close. There was no sign on the door but this time , I was aliitle smarter and decided to asked around. In August, many restaurants are closed. There was no recording on the phone and no sign on the door so as a stupid American, we can not image such thing can happen but we are not French! So I was lucky because the beautiful young lady sees how disapponited I was, told me to go to Le Louchebem because it was her mother's favorite! So she drew us a map and we walked there in about 10 minutes. The beef bourguignon was delicouus but my two teenagers love the French Onion Soup the most! it was so good, they order seconds. Excellent restaurant, with excellent service at decent prices. The aiguillette de boeuf a la ficelle -- rare rump steak in a vegetable broth with marrow bones -- is a true feast, more than enough for two people. Spread a rare slice of the steak with a few dollops of marrow and dip into the hot broth for an especially mouth-watering miasma of rich umami goodness. The waiter was impeccable, attentive without being intrusive, and more than accommodating of my rudimentary grasp of French. Seating along the corner behind the big windows is tight but makes for excellent people-watching along Rue Berger. For dessert, know that the chocolate gelato with whisky genuinely means "with whisky." You'll be served a delicious bowl of cold gelato along with a massive bottle simply labeled 'whisky.' Clearly, the exact mixture of these two ingredients is best left up to the diner (not that I'm complaining). read more

I was afraid that this restaurant, being in Les Halles, would be a Tourist Trap, so I went early with a Plan B. I reserved 3 weeks in advance for Saturday night. Well, no question that they are open to all visitors, yet there were only locals next to us. The room upstairs was blood red, appropriate for this shrine to the worship of meat, and the tables were close set. The noise level was loud. Service was that perfect match of getting what is asked for and style. A restaurant can still run without Mexican (trying not to generalize, but difficult in USA) busboys, where the waiter does it all and with panache. Busboys, I guess, mean more jobs, but the meal took an appropriate 3 hours, and passed with no courses too late or, as is so often the case in the USA, within 4 minutes of each other. We deliberately over ordered: 12 escargots and two fois gras. The snails were huge and delicious; the parsley butter sauce was bread-mopping perfect. The fois was huge (3 slices), and so good. It was not cold, which makes it tough to spread on the fresh bread (not brioche), but what a way to start. When it came to the entrees, the Pigs Trotter and Entrecote probably were not the best choices. There was a never-ending plate of meat being eaten twice next to us, but the Pied Au Cochon didn't have any meat. The Entrecote was very good. There were tables singing Bon Anniversaire that had nothing to do with birthdays; it was a homage to the size of dinners being delivered. Dessert was delicious, and served with a chilled Julianas. Both very tasty and served with delicious wine from the campagne. The staff was very friendly, much more so then in the more touristy places that you can find. This butchers' restaurant is The place where you can eat exceptional quality of meat at a reasonable price. It is perfectly located right in the center and it has a great view on Saint Eustache Church. The interior is warm and quite classical in style. The main interest here is the food and the meat in particular. This time we had marrow bone with grilled bread, a terrine of tête de veau (a bistrot classic) and stuffed tomatoes. As a main course, we enjoyed the butchers' veal piece and a rumsteak (red of course... waiters here don't accept to take an order if you want it well done!!!). But the most chosen dish that night was the tartar steak. Another great classic. I must say this is a hit and this is probably one of the best in town. You also can have the All-you-can-eat formula with beef, lamb and roasted ham with home-made mash potatoe for only 20 euro. This place is a real bargain for that quality. They also have a great choice of wine and champagne. But don't come here for a romantic dinner. It's more suited for a big company of friends. read more

It is a good choice if you want a fair piece of meat. I was hoping for the beef in the mashed as suggested in another review (Iowa food!), so I found the item listed and ordered it, the cuisse de boeuf, It didn't come with mashed, baked red potatoes and green beans and a medium steak with the silver skin membrane still attached. For a butcher, this is a no-no. I understand now the French don't know how to prepare and serve steak. The sauce came on the side and was good, creamy without a bite. One of my all time favorite places. Ok this place is about the meat, the name itself means Butcher in Bretonne. They are an older institution in Paris and have that's the great part, they know how to prepare meat, and the service is very friendly, cozy and the kinda "take you time and enjoy the company feel" I love.. I have eaten here a couple of times on my last trip and and highly recommend it. I don't think it is difficult to just walk in which is a plus as I never tend to reserve in advance. Recommended dishes would be the assiette du boucher and the ham with mashed potatoes. Their are daily menu specials and as always these should be considered as they are always good. Another Holiday stopping point, actually our second to last night, and if this was our last meal before heading back to Florida I'd be a happy camper. This place has history, and it's just a good atmosphere. I'm not a mashed potato lover, but this place must put two or three sticks of butter or something in their potatoes. I got the meat sampler, yes it's an all you can eat feast, which isn't French from what I know, but was ok since my family in France encouraged it. It was lamb, and two cuts of beef, it came with the potatoes, which quickly became a communal potato when the table took over my potato. Note: You have to love meat to like this place. I'm sure their other stuff is great, but this looks like an old school butcher shop.
