An outstanding, super-friendly brasserie. While it's a wee bit cozy inside, you'll dice with smiles on your face. Not just because the food is excellent, but the staff are warm and kind. We started with the pate de campange served with cornichon, as well as the obligatory escargot. Both were great starters, but wish they weren't out of the bone marrow (yum). I had a wonderful beouf tartare. The beef was superbly fresh and seasoned more the French style. They offered Tabasco and Worcestershire if I wanted it, but it was perfect as-is. T My wife had the onglet and it was divine. Perfectly med rare on the French scale, and again, perfectly seasoned. The frites on both dishes as well as the salad were great. As we got to know the staff, now our friends Liloo, Mahmoud, and Otto, we were chatting it up for a bit. They gave us some Chartreuse at the end of the meal on the house. The bone marrow was so tasty and probably one of the better one's I've had. I enjoyed my steak tartare, but I think I learned that I prefer steak tartare as an app vs a whole entree. Even though they have been around since 2010, I would probably not have found L'Aller Retour without some online research because it has a tiny entrance on a small street near the Carreau du Temple. It was definitely worth the search because it was one of my favorite meals during the last trip. Classic escargots for 6 Euros were perfect in every way, and I even got a friend to try one for the first time because of the buttery garlic aroma that perfumed the table upon their arrival :) My friend appreciated the quality of the meat in the burger for 14E50 as well as the crisp fries, saying it was very good in spite of it not being well done (for an American-it was well done by French standards, which means it was pink in the middle instead of red). I had come specifically for the knife cut Charolais steak tartare for 14E that was the best one I ate during this trip. The large salad was very much appreciated to help balance out the meat, with a very nice vinaigrette dressing. Ending lunch with an espresso was a perfect way to cap off lunch at a newly found favorite. read more

Going back and looking at my trip, I cant believe I forgot to review this place! This was the first place we at in Paris! It was a long trip flying in from the west cost. We had stayed up all night prior to our departure out of Portland, had a nap on the plane and landed in Paris at 8AM the next day. After being up all day with multiple lattes, all I wanted was some dinner and to go to bed ASAP. Luckily this was near our hotel, so after a short walk we checked into our reservation. While personally I thought 8pm was late for dinner (US customs) we were actually early by europeans standards. We were the first one in the restaurant to be seated. The host was very nice. When in Paris, I HAD to get escargot. One of my favorite foods in the world. We also shared a giant slab or foie gras which was delicious. For dinner I gotten a carpaccio and he got a nice slab of steak. The steak was cooked slightly rare, when we asked for medium rare. Which was fine, still delicious! I have a routine when I travel. I make a list of restaurants, check in to a Hotel and go site seeing see for a day. This was a place on my itinerary. I would've walked out if not for the effort of the bartender making sure i got a seat. It was busy on a saturday night. It is small place but it really has a good staff. All spoke pretty good english. The wine selection was amazing. Tiny place with over 40 different drinks. The real reason I came is because the food was highly rated. And let me tell you, I WILL BE BACK. The staff was amazing at making a foreigner feel comfortable. I had the angus plate with salad. It included bread and veggies that were so good. One of my favorite restaurant to visit in Paris. L'Aller Retour is Located in the République area of Paris. For the first visit, the restaurant itself is rather hard to locate as the signs are small outside. Took us a couple of times to find and the entire time we passed by it ha! Once inside the place is tiny, but very quaint. Staff was very hospitable and will explain the menu if you don't speak French much. My favorite is their escargot, beef tartare, and the Argentinian steak. All was amazing! Very flavorful, and just the perfect size. The steak was cooked to perfection (I like mine medium rare) and was juicy. I could have it all day, everyday! The steak came with fries and salad. One advise, make sure you make a reservation for the place as it gets pretty busy! Next time you are in Paris, make sure you check this place out. read more

I am really confused by my fellow yelpers I took my time to research where to go for really good Steak and Frites, and I can't believe that so many people gave this place rave reviews. I should have known I was in a tourist trap the minute we walked in. Every customer spoke english. The service was not typical of a Parisian restaurant. It was way too fast, kind of like Denny's. But the food was not nearly as good. I've eaten steak all over the world, on almost every continent, and there has never been an argument on the temperature of medium rare. Well the server insisted that the steak that arrived black and blue (at most) was considered medium rare in Paris. It was completely raw and impossible to cut with the knives that were provided. We apologized for even asking to cook it a little longer, and they kindly took it back. 2 min later it was returned to the table exactly the same, and they never checked on us again. Check out the photo, and you tell me - is this med-rare in any country? If this was Kobe or Wagu we would have been fine with it, but this was not a tender enough cut of meat to get away with such poor preparation. What a disappointing experience. I got a burger on the way back to our neighborhood, and then hit a bar to forget about this experience.... read more

Very rarely do I feel downright offended by a restaurant - this is one of those rare times. While the evening started OK, it went bad quickly at L'Aller Retour. Between our appetizer and main, we waited 70 minutes (with not one check in), followed by a manager saying he was sorry our food was late and then serving us severely undercooked meat. It was as-if they knew they had screwed up, avoided it, avoided it further, and then tried to solve it quickly with bad food. Rarely is maturity so lacked at a nice institution - I'd highly recommend not going here. read more

This review is a few years in the writing but i just remembered i had to write it. This is the finest restaurant I have ever been to. Not because the food is out of this world...(it is really fricken great), but because the hospitality you get here is unlike anything I have ever experienced. My wife and I made a reservation for 2 while on a trip to Paris. Prior to dinner we ran into a friend at a party and suggested she come with us as we were sure they could fit her in. Of course, that was not a good move on our end as the host explained our reservation was for 2 and not 3. As we were about to admit defeat the ower swooped in and said, "it may be tight but I am sure we can accommodate". We added a 3rd seat to our table and proceeded to eat one of the best meals in Paris. Well, we closed the place down. L'Aller Retour is so comfortable we could have stayed for 2 days. We enjoyed a few bottles of wine with the owner and staff while connecting over shared travel experiences and more. As we wrapped up and prepared to leave another friend of ours showed up and mentioned she was hungry and looking for a place to eat. The owner insisted they could make her dinner and ordered the kitchen staff to return to battle stations so our friend could share the same experience we did....at no extra cost. Amazing. Wow. L'Aller Retour served up one of the best meals of my recent London/Paris trip, and one of the most memorable as well. On a Thursday evening at prime dinner time, we walked into this restaurant and discovered a full house. Despite our lack of reservations, the gentleman who greeted us said he could seat us at the bar, which was fine with us. This worked out well and we interacted with the extremely hospitable and kind staff throughout our meal. We asked for a wine recommendation and ended up with a bottle of Petit Ours (little bear) Côtes du Rhône. Delicious! And perfect with everything we ordered. To start, we had the burrata, which was beautifully presented and bursting with flavor. For my main, I went with the Bavarian filet with frites and salad and my husband had the Angus steak with frites and vegetable mash. Although the steaks on their own were excellent, they came with two delicious side sauces, one that tasted like a creamy Gorgonzola and the other which was an au poivre. My steak was hands-down the most delicious, tender and flavorful steak of my life! All three sides were perfection (best frites in Paris, hands down) and I especially loved my husband's vegetable mash. When I asked one of the servers about it, she talked to the chef and kindly wrote down all of the ingredients for me! I can't wait to give it a try at home. We were too full for dessert but everything we saw looked really delicious. I highly recommend L'Aller Retour for the incredible food and hospitality alike, and look forward to returning the next time I visit Paris! read more

No tough choices here if you know what you like about meat and wine. 6-7 beef choices from Ireland, Germany and Argentina today. Choose 2 of 3 simple sides or all 3, no problem. Apparently this place is run by the same owner for my favourite restaurant in Paris, le Barav. Their wine is also taken from the cave/wine cellar le barav across the street. However, instead of a wine bar, this is more of a trendy restaurant that has a consistent and fantastic menu. My friend ordered their steak that came with pepper sauce and blue cheese sauce and two sides (you can pick between fries, salad, and cooked vegetables) and I ordered a starter bone marrow (os moelle) that came with crisply griled bread. Coupled with an AMAZING wine, we left happy and satisfied. Needless to say, the service is fantastic. The price is a bit on the high side, with over 20 EUR mains so be prepared to splurge a little. This might explain why the place is not as crowded is Barav across the street. But come here for a romantic date night and you'll have some fun and very good food! read more

Good god. I saw the Yelp pictures for this place and had to have those fries. And steak. So, i walked 15 minutes from my hotel (which is in the Marais, and I passed probably 200 restaurants that would have been fine) and was so excited to get my steak on for my last night in Paris! I got there just minutes after 8pm on a Thursday night and although the place only had one table seated and one guy dining at the bar, I was told it was completely booked except for the bar. No problem, I'm dining alone so whatevs! The waitress/bar gal pretty much read the French menu to me in English and I was so overjoyed that I didn't have to struggle and ask a million questions (I know 3 things in French- hello, thank you and 'the check please') ANYWAY!! Food: I had the 'pavé d'Irish Angus' with a heap ton of the most delicious fries. See picture below. This steak was DELICIOUS and priced at 18,5 euros, I had no complaints. It was tender, cooked exactly how I wanted it (medium, no less and no more) and had no trace of fat on it. The waitress said its the cut of steak with no fat. This piece of steak with fries (or your choice of salad or veggies..or a mix of two) would easily cost $30 at some trendy places on Long Island. But hey, I will take it! It's a few minutes walk from the metro stop Republique. Or you can have a nice walk like me and enjoy the sights of the Marais! read more

They were able to accommodate us at the last minute for 15 people! Our previous restaurant fell through with the reservation and we didn't want to keep waiting with such a large group. So kudos to L'Aller Retour! They even gave us their entire second floor, so it was like a little private room for us. The staff was very helpful during the whole dinner. We ordered the bone marrow, foie gras, beef tartare, escargot, and steak. Everything was really good! The only thing I have to point out is that we asked for medium rare and the steak came out medium well--just barely pink! But at this moment we were all too hungry and it was already past closing time so we didn't want to make a fuss. Simply put this place is amazing. We sat at the bar and the staff was very helpful as we don't speak fluent French. They made several recommendations on both food and wine. The starter was the burrata with pesto/pine nuts. Amazing. The main was the Argentinian steak and my girlfriend had a fine cut of lean beef (the name escapes me) that was unbelievable. Both were cooked medium rare, as requested. I was actually stunned at this as figured anyone that could cook a steak properly died along with the Dodo. The steaks were so tender the knife cuts through like butter. With the mains you can get two sides of either salad, fries, or a vegetable mash. The fries are done right. A nice crisp on the outside but still has substance inside. I really enjoyed the mash as well. We had all this with a bottle of Bordeaux that was mind blowing. I am not much of a wine drinker in the states because all the wine there is of poor quality and gives me heartburn. The wine selection at this establishment is top notch. A perfect addition to the meal. During the course of our meal the restaurant filled up quickly but the staff and owner was very accommodating to groups walking in. I don't think they turned a single person away. All the while helping customers with the menu and running downstairs for wine bottles. I can't recommend this place enough. We visited a more famous steak frites place during out stay in Paris and it was a complete joke compared to this. The atmosphere is more intimate and the food is in another class all together. We had the best time here and the lunch was delightful. We came for lunch and arrived before the noon opening and the staff was enjoying their lunch before opening. We walked around the neighborhood for 15-20 minutes and went back to be seated. I don't really post on yelp but thought it would be a disservice if I didn't this time around. My gf and I originally ordered hamburgers but they brought out fillets for both of us instead. We said it was fine to not cause any issues, and proceeded to eat the fillets. As I was wrapping up my meal my gf noticed something moving in my salad and a live grasshopper was in my salad (photo attached). I've had a sneaking suspicion that I'm turning into a cranky grandpa who keeps accidentally walking into trendex endroits in Paris and becoming enraged. Aller Retour proves that my un-hip heart has not frozen over. It had the ingredients for disappointment and copious amounts of eye-rolling: - located in North Marais - industrial chic decor - multiple combinations of the following: -beards -tattoos -leopard print -ironic t-shirts -denim on denim -piercings -deep V-necks But my pre-conceptions were happily proved wrong. The menu is well-priced and straightforward: uncomplicated but well-done appetizers (we had the burrata/roquette/tomate cerise/pine nuts - smoky, delectable and fresh), simple desserts and, of course, the mains: MEAT AND MOAR MEAT. We ordered the pavé irlandais (excellent), noix de basse cote (fatty but still good) and finally an Argentinian cut, the name of which escapes me. The owner told us he hadn't gotten around to updating his menu yet. But definitely get this unnamed dish. It is, hands down, the best. You've got a choice of three sides: thin cut fries (crunchy and chewy at the same time), a purée of cauliflower and parmesan and ... something else. Don't worry about it, just get the fries. In case your tastebuds are malfunctioning and you dislike the fries, you may dispose of them in the drawers of the re-purposed school desks (hello again, industrial chic) that are used as tables, as one previous customer did. I hope this customer was a child. The wine list is extensive, supplied by Le Barav next door. The owner who took our order was knowledgeable about his meat and wine. ("That's why I opened this place, but if you're vegetarian we've got a problem.") He also earned extra points by being pleasantly tolerant of my mother-in-law's chatter. We got there right as it opened for lunch and it quickly became packed so reservations are recommended. We had a hiccup with one plat getting confused but they were quick to apologize and make sure it came out in a few minutes. I'm super disappointed that I can't give this restaurant 5 stars because, honestly, the food is amazing. Our experience here was not good though, so I'm going to go with 3 stars for now. We made a reservation for dinner the day before. Good thing too because the whole restaurant filled up within 15 mins of opening! The restaurant wasn't quite ready for the small crowd that had gathered by 7:30pm so we did wait a few minutes. No problem as we were seated immediately. We were offered a couple tables and we chose a more intimate table in the corner. I think if we had chosen a more visible table our experience would have been very different. Very comprehensive wine list by the bottle and glass. We chose the burrata for a starter. It was very good, creamy but a little firm. After we had finished our starter, we waited for about 35 minutes for someone to clear the table. When we started noticing tables that had been sat alongside us leaving, we decided to check in on our mains. The waitress seemed confused because our starter plate hadn't been cleared so she hadn't sent the order to the kitchen yet. When we did finally get our mains an hour after ordering (the filet with fries and salad) both of our steaks were rare, almost raw in the center. Not sure if medium is rarer in France than we are used to in the States but it was at absolute best medium rare. The waitress had them re-fired for us. They were still medium rare when we got them back but not raw so we went with it. The steaks had great flavor. Fries were delicious. Salad was refreshing. It all paired beautifully with the Cabernet merlot blend we chose! We ended up deciding not to stay for dessert as it was now 2 hours into our meal. I really think that we were "out of sight, out of mind" for the servers. They were very friendly but clearly overwhelmed by the packed house. If we had sat in the center I think we would have had a great time. Overall, great spot but don't go on the weekend or sit in the corner. You'll be forgotten. read more

After our super delayed flight into Paris which led to an impromptu stay in Sweden we struggled to find a delicious restaurant that wasn't booked solid on a rainy Sunday. The place we initially tried to eat at was booked solid. Sunday's in Paris seem to be spent attempting to find open restaurants. We scoured our location and were luckily suggested to eat here by Yelp. It looked as if we had no chance for a table, but they happily checked their books and squeezed us in between two other tables. The service from start to finish was fantastic. The servers were slammed, it's obvious they had their work cut out for them. They accommodated our lack of knowledge of their native language, allowed us to eat at our pace and were consistently attentive. Not a whiff of that famous rude French vibe here at all. The food was dreamy. We stared with their homemade foie gras. The plate is lined with a tiny amount of honey that so elegantly enhances the buttery umami of their foie terrine. Their marrow dish was also delish, but the foie was the stand out here. Our server told us about the Argentinian steak special, her description sold us. "Buttery, marbled fat" she said, with a side of mushrooms and frites. Having never ordered steak in a French restaurant I had zero knowledge of what to expect. What appeared was a perfectly cooked, seasoned, buttery piece of meat that was cooked so tenderly with care and love. Easily one of the best hunks of meat I've eaten. The sides, frites, mushrooms, blue cheese and green peppercorn sauces expertly enhanced aspects of their choicest steak. The best combo was the green peppercorn sauce, a bite of mushrooms with a nice slice of steak. The dessert course was ok, the tarte crust had been slightly over worked, resulting in an un-cuttable crust. Flavors were on, just not their strongest.
