My wife and I stayed in the Beekman hotel on Nassau street on Friday night and had dinner @ Le GRATIN and we had a fantastic experience. The service was spot on the duck breast main course and the Foie Gras appetizer was some of the best I've had and rivaled any of the top restaurants throughout France. Our meals were so good we decided to give it a shot for lunch the next day on Saturday getting their classic hamburger, has my main meal and French onion soup as my appetizer. Once again food and service did not disappoint. A true gem in New York City. read more

Another lovely meal at Le Gratin. After ordering a Hendricks gin martini WELL shaken with a lemon twist, we turned our attention to the menu. I hadn't had traditional burgundy escargot in ages...so lick that in. My entree was the April special Poularde aux Écrevisses (Chicken Ballotine, Crawfish, Sauce Nantua, Petits Pois à la Française) which was phenomenal! Our waiter was efficient & personable. Came here for brunch recently and the standouts were the escargot and complimentary bread with butter. The bread basket was solid but not fell short of the stellar pastry experience I've had in Europe. Crepe and florentine were also mediocre for what I expected from Daniel Bolud's restaurant--and more importantly, of a French restaurant. Crepe was a overwhelmingly buttery, and something was off (either the egg or jambon). As for the florentine, there was nothing special about it, so I think you can skip this as well. All in all, don't miss the escargot here! read more

We had an excellent meal, similar to what we might enjoy in a Paris bistro. The starter salad was very fresh with a light dressing, and the chicken liver pate and steak tartare were both delicious. The waiter asked if we wanted the chef to mix the steak tartare, and brought it back to the kitchen for the chef to do so. The vegetarian in our group enjoyed the filling pasta, when two of us had the salmon and beef. We finished our entrees, before enjoying the desserts (warm apple tart with ice cream was a favorite!). Staff was attentive, without being over-bearing. The dining room was attractive, and the tables were spaced far enough apart to allow for conversation. Good time tonight! read more

My family and I ate here the other day and had a great dinner!! This restaurant is located through a pretty nondescript side door you can access by going through the lively, library like bar in the Beekman hotel. The interior is gorgeous, with mirrored walls, gorgeous French designs and unique lighting fixtures. We were sat in an intimate booth and served water and asked for our drink orders immediately. My dad and partner had the gin cocktail, XXX, which was strong yet delicious. We also all enjoyed several glasses of wine, champagne and finally my dad hair the red wine pairing recommended with his dinner, the plate of the month. We did note that while service was great (always had our plates cleared, crumbs scooped away, and waters filled), they did sort of rush us to order our appetizers and mains all at once, which is a pet peeve of my family and I, as we prefer to have long dinners and order as we feel like it. That said, the food was a unique take on classic French food. We tried to order the foie gras, but they didn't have it as an app that night, so instead we had the Steak Tartare À La Parisienne, the Escargots Et Pied De Cochin Croustillants and the Terrine. They were all fantastic. The steak tartare had a raw egg yolk which they can mix for you or you can maid in yourself. The escargot is definitely not a classic escargot and instead is a tempura version which could be great for people who are intimidated by standard escargot. They also brought out bread and butter. We also shared the seasonal mushroom fricassée and the creamy & cheesy potato gratin and the French onion soup (SO GOOD). For our mains, I ordered the Poireaux Vinaigrette, which was so unique and felt very "French", and shared the roasted duck, which was cooked perfectly. My stepmom shared the plate of the month with my dad and noted the beet salad, which had lovely, refreshing cold cubes of beets. We had leftovers boxed up and were still too stuffed for dessert. If you love French/Lyonnaise food, this is a great place to come! My dad's plat du mois was the Tournedos Rossini Sauce Périgourdine (filet mignon, seared foie gras, black truffle madeira jus) and it was phenomenal. Cooked perfectly. read more

Delicious! There is a high bar for French food in this city, but this place competes. Came here for lunch on a weekday and the restaurant wasn't too busy or noisy. The ONLY downfall is that, in order to go to the bathroom, you have to walk into to the Beekman Hotel, all the way to the back, and down a set of stairs. It's almost not worth it. The service could have been a bit better. They seemed a bit snooty and perhaps treated us differently, because I was with some younger folks, but we were dining on a corporate credit card, so they were going to get a good tip anyway. Perhaps a misjudgment on their part. The food was great - we all got the pre fixe menu and shared, so that we could try the maximum amount of dishes. Everything we tried tasted good: the beef tartare was excellent, the pate was great, my friend really enjoyed her French onion soup, the salad was bright and delicious, the burger was great, too. After some spectacular weekend adventures, we decided on Le Gratin for brunch. This is the signature restaurant of chef Daniel Boulud, located in the Tribeca area of Manhattan. Upon entering one is transported to old France with notable and opulent appointments throughout the space. The open dining room is flanked by gorgeous wood and tile work and adorned with gorgeous ambient lighting throughout. We were seated in a corner booth that provided an entrancing view of the entire space. We began our meal with an order of the Escargot Gratines Au Persil and the Francine Salad. The Escargot were prepared with ample garlic and butter and served simmering with crusty bread as an accompaniment. The salad was a fresh and beautiful mix of frisee, lettuce, thinly shaved carrot, radish and onion, topped with a beautiful housemaid white cheese. Both were delectable starters to what would be a spectacular lunch. For our main courses we selected the Steak Frites and the Branzino. The steak was cooked to medium perfection, tender, juicy and well-seasoned and was accompanied by a generous portion of crispy french fries. The Branzino fillet was perfectly cooked, flaky and moist, bathed in a sinfully delicious beurre-blanc, probably the best version I have tasted and accompanied by a delicately flavored rice pilaf studded with minced zucchini. Craving a bit more green, we also ordered the Haricots Verts a la Ciboule, a green bean dish with an absolutely delightful scallion butter. We finished our meal with the Apple Tarte Tatin. The soft apple caramel atop a luscious cookir, served with Rum Raisin Ice Cream were a delicious denouement!! We went on a Saturday around noon, and there was no wait, the restaurant was about 80% full. I didn't have high expectations at first and thought it would just be another typical French restaurant in NYC, but everything was surprisingly good. Our server was really welcoming. She mentioned it was her first day, and she was absolutely killing it. The portion sizes were huge as well (I mean compared to other French restaurants in the city, I don't think I'm exaggerating. The food leans more toward homey than fancy, which I really enjoyed. You can really taste the flour in their pancakes (my boyfriend didn't seem to like that as much though). The only thing I didn't like as much was the interior decor. The lighting was too dim, they used sharp papers to cover the tables, and the couch was not comfortable (I could feel the metal frame through the cushion). read more

Had credit to use at one of the Beekman restaurant's during our stay in New York. I was very impressed with the service. We had booked our reservation through the hotel concierge and got to chatting about our plans to go to Book of Mormon after dinner. When we showed up to our reservation, we ran into our concierge who was there to give the wait staff a heads up about our reservation to make sure that we would be able to get out in time. I got the french onion soup and the ribeye. We were there around 5 on a Friday and there was some happy hour portion. I think it was around 6 ounces? Which was perfect. It came with fries and a little salad. The french onion soup was delicious. Rich and cheesy. The ribeye was juicy and the peppercorn sauce was delicious as well. read more

Came here for a 5pm dinner on a Saturday. We had a reservation and got there on time and our take wasn't ready since they just open at 5pm. Service was excellent. I had leftovers, about a quarter of the burger and fries. It came with pork belly which i asked to be on the side and also ate later. The burger was delicious but messy. Came with lettuce, tomato, cheese and aioli. Since i had the French onion soup which was very delicious, that filled me quite a bit. I tasted the crème dessert which was like a crème brûlée without the top being charred. The space was exactly like French bistro. The bar area isn't large and by the time we left at 7pm there was about 5 people waiting and ask the tables were occupied. I will say they are quite pricey but their restaurant week menu made it somewhat affordable. My items were only on the regular menu. read more

Great service and waiters checked in if we wanted water or champagne. There was also complimentary bread with butter I came here for burger league and the Le Gratin Cheeseburger (Dry Aged Beef Patty, Caramelized Onions, Tomato, Gruyère Cheese, Boston Lettuce, Peppercorn-Cornichon Mayo). It came with fries. Fries were pretty good. The burger was good but not the best I have had. The lettuce was too big for the burger and sauce was a little drippy so it was a little messy eating it. The ambiance of the restaurant is very nice. If you the bathroom you have to go through sort of a mini maze to get there but you get to go through the beautiful temple of court which has an amazing ceiling. I do recommend going through it at least once if you haven't been before. The bathroom is a little out of the way and would be more convenient if it was available in the restaurant. read more

I don't know why it took me so long to come here, but so glad I did! My husband and baby took me here for Mother's Day brunch and once I arrived inside the restaurant, it took me back to Paris. The service was good and the food surprisingly was delicious. We ordered the following: - The crab salad was light and refreshing. It wasn't anything special so I would try something else next time as an app - The mussels were my favorite. They were drowned in a delicious broth and the mussels were so plump!. - Steak a cheval ... it was interesting. It reminded me of a Hawaiian loco moco. Another DB restaurant in the books for us! This review is my personal experience and of course may not be someone else's so please keep that in mind... The good: the poulet fermier and gratin daphinois, lovely...we even had some leftover we happily took home. The elegant and beautifully decorated interior. The adventure walking to the bathroom through the hotel next door with stunning architecture. The French onion soup! The not-so-good: getting sat at a tiny round table with square paper covers and immediately slicing my knuckle on the stiff paper (my fault). Feeling slightly anxious the whole meal because the square table cover made it hard to see the edges of the round table (we should've moved after the paper cut, also our fault). The steak frites golden hour special was so underwhelming and the fries were mushy. The experience overall could have been better. Also, I don't mind that staff are on their cellphones, it's not a dealbreaker for me but might be for other people. I've literally worked at a "breastaurant" (a long time ago!) that was stricter about cellphones than this casual spot. I think everyone should still come and enjoy, some staff are dry and some are very warm and sweet and the dishes, although pricey--are worth a try. Cheers! read more

It comes with a perfectly cooked piece of branzino -- crispy skin and all -- in the most delectable butter sauce. On the side, there's a rice pilaf with diced zucchini, also rich with butter. It was such a perfect epitome of French food, though definitely on the richer side! Service was decent. Warm baguette and butter to start: no complaints. I mean, it's warm bread and butter. Burger: fine. Bib lettuce made all the toppings slide around too much, I thought. Fries: greasy and limp Dessert redeemed the meal. Crème caramel for the husband -- perfect, he said. I had the chocolate gateau, which was good. Le Gratin is conveniently located and spacious without any hassle with getting a reservation. In fact, they are quite open which is hard to find in NYC. I enjoyed the non alcoholic Negroni. We split the leek salad which was simple. I got the mussels with fries. I should've gotten the duck instead. The mussels were average without much flavor which is surprising bc I feel like most mussels cooked in a good sauce should retain some of the flavor of the sauce. I can't even tell you what the sauce tasted like. A handful of my mussels also didn't open all the way. Possibly would come back if I needed a place to have a mini reunion with friends given the ease but not really running back here for the food. read more

Absolutely beautiful spot for our anniversary dinner! The fixtures, lighting, furniture all come together for a seamless & pleasing French bistro experience. The mixologist served up top-notch drinks, including a delicious take on an Old Fashioned. We started with an amazing beet salad with pistachios & goat cheese dressing. The poulet fermier (half a rotisseire chicken) may be the best chicken dish we've had in years, and it was paired with DB's Mother's potato gratin that was heavenly. We also had their steak frites, and the meat was cooked absolutely perfectly. We topped off the meal with an order of profiteroles (with Gianduja Ice cream & chocolate hazelnut) that was a delight to the senses. Service throughout was outstanding! After going to DANIEL back in December, (see my review for more details), we decided to try another Chef DB spot. Enter "Le Gratin" We made a 6:15pm reservation on Good Friday, to kick off the weekend. Plus, we wanted to try the Golden Hour Special that we've been hearing so much about. We arrived a little early, dressed nice, to a mostly empty restaurant with a variety of small tables throughout the beautifully decorated dining room. But alas, they sat us at the smallest table in the place. So much so that we folded the paper top cloth, in order to see the edges of the table. If not, something would have fallen off. While doing so, my wife got a paper cut. The waiter was all business, worked efficient, and helped with pronunciation. Placed our order, and in no time the bread arrived along with the French Onion Soup w/Gruyere Cheese & Crouton. The aroma of the soup and cheese was so pungent, (in a good way), that it woke up the dining room. Spit-Roasted Label Rouge Chicken & Potato Gratin was divine. Like a cozy fall meal. The "Golden Hour Special" was more like "11th Hour". The luke warm Hanger Steak was ok. Frites; cold & mushy and the Jus needed improvement. Or maybe a flip of the whisk. The Pavlova A La Noix De Coco was pretty to look at, but just plain weird. Some other annoyances were the gaggle of waiters hanging out by the bar, 2 young girls dressed down without a reservation scoring a choice table and being charged full price on a Diet Coke refill. My friend and I came here for French Restaurant Week lunch. This restaurant was opened at least over a year ago. I've been wanting to dine here since it was walking distance from work. We started off with the soup of the day, which was a cold summer corn soup, and my friend had the salad. Both appetizers were delicious. We also got freshly made complimentary bread, and they serve both gluten and gluten-free versions. For the entrees, we both ordered the mussels. I got mine with French Fries, which I took home for the baby. My friend got another salad. Service was quick and efficient since I was on the clock. The ambiance was pretty, especially since this is one of David Boulud's restaurants. I'd definitely return for martini hour one Friday. We were looking forward to my 75th pre-birthday dinner at Le Gratin.  They serve calves liver, a favorite of mine that's even difficult to find in Paris. Our walk downtown from Tribeca past city hall was dark and gritty on this Saturday night in March.  However, the streets surrounding Le Gratin and its Beekman Hotel location were hopping with new hotels and restaurants. The area is a changin.    Daniel Boulard and partners are marketing Le Gratin as a Lyonnaise bouchon, but it's more their attempt at recreating Keith McNally's magic at Balthazar, Cafe Luxembourg, Pastis, etc.  Certainly, the joint was jumping on a Saturday night in March with an array of drinkers and diners.  We found two seats at the busy bar and ordered wine, cocktails, pâté, terrine, and two calves livers with extra crispy pomme frites.  Our bartender/server was a bit too engaged with himself and didn't pay attention to us or the order.  Sadly, while the pâté and terrine were good, our liver had gristle and the fries were mushy.  I was so let down.  The bill was expensive for sad food.  I don't know if Le Gratin will succeed.  The crowds might overlook the food while the restaurant remains trendy.  However, longevity in the restaurant business is based on price and taste, not trends. read more

Came here for French Restaurant Week with a friend since she's been here for lunch and wanted to try the dinner menu. The atmosphere is elegant like being in Paris. Staff were nice and service was good. The bread was pretty hard and not fresh. I ordered the le French martini, this was very flavorful, would recommend this cocktail. I love escargot and this was on the menu for the appetizer. I was really looking forward to having this, but it was really challenging extracting the escargot from the shell. My friend tried and she also struggled. It was ok, I've had better and would prefer escargot without the shell. The steak frites were very tasty with the sauce. My friend had the vol-au-vent which is braised chicken, mushroom, bechamel, puff pastry, it was delicious, but the portion were small. For dessert, I got the chocolate coffee cake, the presentation was pretty, but I tasted more coffee and I'm not a big coffee fan. I enjoyed my friend's dessert more, she had the cherry fruit cake. I would prefer to go to other French Restaurants, this one is not for me. read more

We stopped here after drinks at the bar at The Beekman and were lucky enough to be in before the rush so it didn't feel so packed (it can feel a little snug at the height of dinner time). Beautiful space, bright but not too bright. You will have to exit and head to the hotel tho for a restroom. There'll be a bit of a mini trek. read more

What a Fabulous place with great food, excellent, attentive service and staff, delicious wine, and an enjoyable, pleasant atmosphere. The place reminded us of Paris, and the food was delicious. The charcuterie boards, onion soup, salads, Duck, steak and burger, and potato side dish were all delicious. The array of desserts sounded great, but we were so stuffed we went with the ice cream/sorbet, which was all homemade, and you could taste the difference. Came here to celebrate and treat myself to a nice dinner. My bartender Jon, made my whole experience. He was so engaging, friendly and attentive. I mean we talked almost the entire time about everything it seemed. He made great recommendations for drinks and food wine being in the industry we just had so much in common. Yes the place was upscale and fancy and French, but Jon made me feel very hospitable and comfortable. Honestly I wasn't completely blown away by the food, but I enjoyed it for what French cooking is known for. I know they love butter, and while I also love butter I felt my rainbow trout was swimming in it and there was just too many almonds. I wanted to really taste more of the fish because it was cooked so well. But I did enjoy the cocktails a lot! Came here for dinner tonight and tried their Winter Restaurant Week menu. They are one for the few restaurants who extended the restaurant week deal for an extra 2 weeks.... 3 courses for $60. The ambiance can be compared to a French cafe feel. We were seated in a corner table near the door but away from the breeze. Even though the table was next to the heater, there was a small space heater on the other side of the table so we were pretty warm. I felt like we were forgotten about as we barely saw our waiter and our plated were handed out by different servers. When we sat down, we were given both the regular menu and the Restaurant Week menu, but we all chose off the Restaurant Week menu. We all different items so that we can share plates. Although we should have asked, our waiter did not tell us what the "soup of the day" was when it was ordered. We shared the kale salad and charcuterie board. For the main course, we shared the pasta and beef bourguignon. One of my friends ordered the steak frites which had a $10 additional charge. The beef bourguignon was a little dry and overcooked. I had to eat it with the mash potatoes and sauce. The steak looked more tender and was cooked to a perfect medium rare/ medium. For dessert, we got the chocolate ganache cake and caramel vanilla pudding. I was so full by this point I barely ate the cake. My friend took her dessert home. From what I had, it was very good and chocolatey. 3 courses was more than enough for me. I probably could have ordered an entree only from the regular menu and been content as well. I came here with my husband and it was one of our first experiences with french food. We've had it before, but not often and we chose this restuarant because it was well reviewed. First I'd like to say the restaurant itself was cozy and I liked the lighting. It does not have a new look, but it's clearly an upscale restaurant with a nice ambience. The servers were very kind and attentive, our waiter was fun even and had good vibes. He gave us several recommendations (our cocktails, and my entree). I started with the French onion soup and it was absolutely delicious. Like a tasty, warm, hug the broth flavor was excellent and the bread soaked up the broth nicely, I'd definitely come back. My duck came medium rare per the chefs recommendations and it was also excellent. A lot more duck than I expected, and the temp and flavor was very good. The potatoes were also good but ended up being my least favorite, which I did not expect. The other dishes I had were just that good. The dessert was ok, it was a pavlova, I only wish it had more sorbet. All in all, I'd come back here for sure, for the soup if nothing else. read more

Came here for dinner with a few colleagues and clients and had a wonderful experience. We were in town for a few days and Le Gratin was the place we selected for dinner. The restaurant isn't large and it's definitely an intimate spot and would be great for a date night. Despite arriving about 25 minutes before our reservation, they were kind enough to seat us early while we waited for the rest of our party. We started with the cheese platter and everything was tasty. I opted for one of the specials that evening which was a beef tenderloin (I believe) a ravioli and mashed potatoes with veg. We also shared the namesake potatoes and a few other items. The food was all excellent! In addition to the great food, our server and everyone taking care of us was fantastic. We never had to worry about our drinks running empty as another bottle of water was placed on the table or a glass of wine offered. French cuisine is not really for me, but I can definitely see how this would be a lovely place for a romantic, warm and filling dinner. My one gripe is just a personal preference, really: I don't really like heavy lunches, and Lyonnaise food seems to be really heavy on the proteins and fats: even their salad had juicy bacon bits and generous cuts of chicken liver! Came here for a business dinner and we enjoyed our time. The waiters here are attentive and were great with making sure our wine glasses were always filled. For appetizers, we ordered the charcuterie and pate plate and escargot. The pates were all nice to try but nothing super special. The charcuterie was a bit difficult to share since there were small portions. The escargot was interesting because it was fried with tempura and came with mushroom croquettes, which I enjoyed. For my entree, I ordered the September special which was cabbage stuffed with a meat mixture that included chicken liver, duck and other meats. I really enjoyed the sauce and mushrooms it came with and the mashed potatoes. My coworkers ordered the steak frites and duck which they also enjoyed. Came here for a work dinner because I didn't want to leave the neighborhood. It was actually a fair walk from the office but such is life. Inside of the place is nice and service was good. My hesitancy with a French restaurant is usually that it's overpriced, pretentious, and underwhelming. We got 2/3 here. Appetizers were very hit or miss. I've never had a worse pates at a French restaurant. Even the foie gras one was just ok. Not enough condiments to go with them either. Beet salad was pretty good, as was the steak tartare; pretty decent rendition even if not the best I've had, however some folks really loved it. Deviled eggs were the best appetizer by far, and weren't far off from being some of the best I've had. Tried the Dover sole as this was the real deal fish versus a deliberate mislabeling on a menu (usually the latter, and I'd seen it way too many times on dining menus. The fish itself was good with the citrusy flavor and lack of sea flavor that is promised, however I do not understand why the restaurant cooked the 2 small filets separately versus together. This limited the flavor of the flesh--which is the main attraction--and dried it out. Green beans it came with were great. Lemon caper brown butter had very little flavor so it really was the fish trying to shine against the odds. Lots of people got burgers which in hindsight was not a bad idea. The namesake potato's au gratin, on the other hand, were sublime. They're the chef's mother's recipe and I have nothing but good things to say about them. Desserts were simple (cherry tart and flan) however very good. Very much the definition of a mixed bag, with the highs/lows of a French dining experience. Wouldn't be that big of a deal if the prices weren't as inflated as they are. Probably a combo of the big name chef and the big name hotel, however unless you're huge on French cuisine, shame on you if you can't do better than this for these prices. read more

Restaurants Week 3 course lunch. Truly a lovely vegetarian lunch starting with bread service. Ate and drank: Luberon wine Crudite of veg eggplant caviar Artichoke & veg Mouse au chocolat The first two courses were a dream. Perfectly cooked everything. Solid French food in a nice bustling yet classy atmosphere. The restaurant itself shares a space with Laissez Faire next door so it was a little confusing to figure out where the server was asking where we had a reservation for but it's all good. The food itself was amazing. The duck breast was delicious and generous while the mussel frites were light but hearty. The chicken liver salad was an interesting combo but still interesting nonetheless. The lemon mocktail drink was also nice and refreshing. Overall this is a pretty cool spot to go to in the area and I would visit again for some other entrees on the menu. read more
