Beet and Roasted Beet & Mango Salad
    A M.

Came here around 7pm on a Saturday. Knowing it was a smaller place I was nervous about wait times, luckily I was a solo diner and was seated immediately. I did see a few parties of more people waiting outside. This cozy little place is nestled on a residential corner and was exactly what I was looking for my entire NY trip. Dim lighting, tile floors, big windows framed by twinkle lights among whimsical faux flower garlands and nautical decorations, specials written on a blackboard. I ordered the beet and mango salad to start. It was a good size for one person but could easily be split between two. Simply dressed with some white vinegar that complimented the flavors of the produce well. For my entree I ordered the salmon with mushroom risotto, green beans and a sweet pepper sauce. It was plated nicely and the skin on the salmon was crisp and delicious. Overall it was a comforting dish but I think where it fell a little short for me was depth of flavor which is also why I did not include a 5th star. The sauce is so vibrant in color and beautiful, but it just wasn't as much of a star as I wanted it to be. I expected it to be a bright and intense flavor and it was more mild. The green beans were delicious but naked and needed a little salt and the risotto was not the creamy emulsified side dish I was expecting, more just rice with mushrooms- a drizzle of truffle oil would've really taken it to the next level. All in all it was a good meal but I think it could be really good with a few tweaks and recipe alterations and at around $70 for the meal with no drinks I would love for it to rise to that occasion. All this said, I was eyeing everything that other tables got and it all looked delicious and well presented. Also a nice range of menu items for those you may choose to go with. Service was friendly and as fast as it could be given there were 2 people taking care of a packed house. I'd return for another try.

Cute little cafe with great food, decent coffee, and a friendly, neighborhood vibe in the west village. Highly recommend the chicken sandwich.

This place was so damn cute, but they failed the 3 strike rule. I have no issue if a few things get messed up. I know the wait staff gets busy and the kitchen gets crazy, but when it's one thing after another, it's just a lack of effort. Strike 1 - While we were awaiting our food, the lady next to us began arguing with the wait staff that she did not order the meal that came in front of her. The waiter said "you don't want this?" She stood on business and said "No. I didn't order this." Strike 2 - I ordered a side salad with my omelette, and my big homie ordered potatoes with his eggs benedict. They switched our side orders, which I will concede in an isolated incident is no big deal, but looking back it just shows the lack of attention to detail. Strike 3 - I ordered an omelette with no cheese and no mushrooms, with bacon to which our waiter said "of course, no problem." I swear to god my omelette was all cheese, mushrooms, and no bacon. I was kind of just laughing to myself like damn what did I do to bro... but didn't want to cause a big fuss because I'm really shy and didn't want to embarrass my big homie. Strike 4 - When we got the check, the added bacon that I didn't get was $8. Eight dollars for some phantom bacon. Casper bacon. I asked "bacon was $8? I wish you would have told me that when I ordered... I don't think there was even bacon in there..." to which he responded "Yes, it's extra." I'm so non-confrontational that I just rolled my eyes and tapped my Chase card. The food itself was a solid 15/20 if I took my ego out of it and imagined my omelette with no cheese and no mushrooms. The sick thing is I would be back as I'm a masochist, and it's such a no frills vibe in here with the sun shining through the floor to ceiling windows. I'm a sucker for some quality natural light. Hit up Tartine based on my sister's recommendation and we were not disappointed -- the spot itself is super cozy and well curated. Food was fast, and the salmon was delicious! The wait staff made sure we had plenty of water and took great care of us. Would go back!

A cute tiny, corner French bistro in the west village, maybe 20-25 indoor seats and some outside but uncovered. (NY Magazine describes it as "bodega sized") No reservations but we lucked out at 5:45 pm on a Thursday night for a window seat for 4. Loved the way the bread comes cubed and toasted in a little tin pail, we enjoyed the mussels, steak au poivre, escargot & one of the chicken dishes..all delicious and beautifully presented. Too full for dessert and coffee, but friends shared the apple pastry. While I would not say "run here" if you are visiting NYC, it was a delightful and perfect evening with friends and good food, and I look forward to returning again.

Came here for a quick afternoon snacks while in the area. We were able to get a table immediately on a Friday afternoon, and the service was quick and friendly. The place has a quaint vibe, even though it's obviously an established cornerstone of the neighborhood. I ordered the Spicy Tuna Tartare and it was scrumptious. I had expected the pricing to be outlandish, but it was actually pretty reasonable, and either way, you know what you're getting into.

What a cozy brunch restaurant tucked inside the West Village! The outdoor seating was very charming, though the wait time is around 20-30 minutes at peak hour. However, if you are in a bit of a rush, my party was able to be seated inside immediately (though the sunlight tends to pass it by). I ordered the eggs florentine, which came packed with food and tasted delicious. My party's apple pancake, corned beef hash, tunisian breakfast, and croque monsieur were also being raved about. This was absolutely a classic brunch, and I have little qualms.

A cozy sunlit spot in West Village, Tartine is a great example of New York brunch done right. I got the French Toast, which was an interesting combination of sweet and savory with the added bacon and potatoes on top. As someone with a sweet tooth, I was a fan! There wasn't anything particular special about the menu offerings or service so not 5 star worthy, but still a very solid brunch choice.

Had a relaxing weekend brunch at this cozy French spot. Both vegetable omelets and Tunisian breakfast ( toast, poached egg, and veggies) were delicious, and even the crispy side French fries didn't disappoint us. The dessert was also tasty which was perfect for ending the meal. I love how it's free byob for the first bottle you bring which is a plus for wine lovers. We ended up opening the other sparkling wine from the list and that made the brunch time even more enjoyable. It was such a wonderful experience for us, and we are looking forward to coming back to try the dinner menu soon. Cheers

Grilled Chicken Sandwich on Focaccia or Seven Grain Roll

My friend and I both got the grilled chicken on focaccia without jalapeños and with fries. We went on a Saturday for lunch. Grilled chicken sandwich: 8.5/10 This sandwich was really good! The focaccia is more like a ciabatta bread. It was a little too hard in some areas and the rosemary didn't come through. The chicken in this sandwich is good, it wasn't too dry and there is a good amount. I loved the combination with the avocado, bacon, and cheese too. The arugula adds the perfect amount of bitterness where everything works and you don't feel gross after. The fries are average. I am marking down a star because of the service. Beware the fries substitution is $3, which both of us weren't told when we asked if it was okay to substitute for the grilled potatoes. To me, this is bad service, and kind of absurd that the potatoes in a different form with a sandwich is extra (on top of an already pricey sandwich). We also got an iced coffee black and it took forever to get it. They also don't have other milks aside from cow's milk, which is unfortunate because my friend was lactose intolerant. We also didn't have one waiter so it was hard to get someone's attention. There tends to be a line, but if you want to sit inside it is worth mentioning (in the summer/fall) because you may not have to wait as long. When I mentioned that I was okay sitting inside I got seated right away. No reservations and whole party needs to be present. Overall I would definitely come back!

One of the best brunch spots in the city, and you can bring your own liquor, yeah that's definitely my vibe. They take no reservations so you will have to be in a line for about 15-20 minutes ish. Small unpretentious french spot with ridiculously good food. I always have the french toast (it's super yummy and addictive) , the eggs Benedict- so good, and the croque madam this last time- but that didn't quite "hit the spot" Love the neighborhood for people watching, and dogs, don't forget the dogs. And yes, they now accept credit cards, prior to only taking cash.

Was this worth the 40 minute wait? Maybe not. But it's the west village, so you're not going to see much better wait times anywhere else. The grilled chicken sandwich was really good, but nothing extra special. I would come here for brunch again because the ambiance is great inside and out (check out the view of the street!) and the service is really good. Food is dependable, but nothing special.

I had a 7pm reservation, but was running late, and they were flexible and told me to come any time. Upon my arrival, I was seated by the piano. The pianist playing that night, Andrew Abrahamsen, was very talented. He played an eclectic mix of songs, including "I Will Survive," Disney's "When You Wish Upon a Star," and "Somewhere Over the Rainbow." As the night went on, he played Happy Birthday for me, and went on a 90s Disney Renaissance spree, playing songs including "Go the Distance" from Hercules, "Out There" from Hunchback of Notre Dame, "Beauty and the Beast," and "You've Got a Friend in Me" from Toy Story. Ordered black tiger shrimp for my entree. It smelled wonderful, and especially peppery once the waiter added pepper to it. The risotto the shrimp sat on was also very delicious. I ended up taking this to go, and it still tasted great later on! For dessert, I chose the lemon tart brûlée with raspberry sorbet. It came with "Happy Birthday" written on the plate with chocolate, and a candle on the sorbet. As always, the ambiance and decor is very beautiful, with portraits of Josephine Baker to honor the revolutionary badass woman. Thanks for the great birthday dinner, Chez Josephine!

I made a reservation to be safe, as many restaurants now ask if you did so. This place is quite packed every night so it was the way to go. I came here for dinner post showtime and my son and I over ordered but happily enjoyed everything. I think our eyes are way bigger than our stomachs. Starters: - French onion soup, au gratin, was perfect. Great onion profile and lots of it. Not overly salty so that was good. - Beef tartare, classic French bistro staple, must order this. The portion was quite generous and it was delicious. We couldn't stop eating it. The petite toasts were a nice accompaniment as well as the raddiccio salad - cheese board, IYKYK, I never met a cheese I didn't like. This board was matched with nice pairings. Think grapes, fig jam, and marcona almonds. The cheese were a classic French variety - bleu, comte and brie. For our entrees, my son opted for a sandwich and I got the steak. His croque Madame was really delicious. The bread, the ham, the baked cheese and the fried egg was so savory. Yummy. My steak was a sizeable portion but I purposely ordered the bigger ounces since I know we'd share. Fries are nice and skinny, perfectly seasoned. Our waiter was attentive and I asked for the table next to us given all the food I know we were getting. He was not sure if he could accommodate but I insisted he check with management. They came over and put it together for me. I appreciated that given a table for two, for how much we ordered, it'd never fit. Totally would return. If you like French food, this is a solid spot to try.

For pastry, I tried the Cherry Croissant Cube for the first time, and I was honestly speechless. It was incredibly flavorful, delicious, and truly made my day. I 100% recommend trying it. For drinks, I ordered the seasonal Cherry Elderflower Spritz. It was just okay compared to everything else, but not bad. Overall, Maman continues to be my go-to brunch place in NYC, and this visit reminded me exactly why.

Unnecessary confrontation over a 5-minute early pickup…read more I'm a regular Too Good To Go customer and have picked up bags from Maman before without issue. This visit was a frustrating exception. The app activated the swipe button shortly after 5PM -- which Maman and several other stores have recently started allowing as an early pickup signal. I went to the store accordingly. The young male Hispanic employee at the register refused to hand over my bag, insisting the pickup window didn't start until 5:15. All the bags were already packed and ready. There were no other customers in line. I tried to explain how the app works and that early pickup had been allowed here before, but he repeatedly cut me off. At one point I said "if you want to play by the book, so be it" -- meaning it as a neutral acknowledgment. He took offense, raised his voice, and kept repeating "I don't play, you play" in an increasingly hostile tone. I asked if he understood the expression. He just kept repeating "I don't play." When I asked to speak with a manager, he said there wasn't one. When I asked what a customer is supposed to do when there's a problem with an employee, he told me to come back tomorrow and talk to him. This was completely avoidable. The bags were ready. It was a 5-10 minute window, allowed by the app. The confrontation served no purpose. I noticed the review posted the day before mine mentions "poor customer service at the register" -- I suspect we encountered the same person. Maman has a good reputation worth protecting. I'd encourage management to review this interaction and make sure this particular staff is trained properly.

All around delicious. Super cozy, warm atmosphere and solid service…read more Loved the escargots, it was a generous portion and very flavorful full of garlic as it should. The frites were the best I've had - super thin and crunchy and the mussels were fantastic in a delicious white wine sauce and again a LARGE portion. We were left happy and full - the Bordeaux Blanc we ordered was perfect to go with it all.

Came here a mere week after five-star my first visit, and this experience was significantly less…read morepositive. While the French Onion soup was still a stand-out dish, the painfully slow service detracted. There appeared to be a single waitress working. I didn't notice during my first visit if there were multiple servers, but the first time I did hear the waiter advise another table that the kitchen was behind and there would be a wait for food. (This didn't affect me since on my first visit I only ordered soup.) Same thing happened this time, and there was a significant delay between our soup/salad course and entrees. We were told the kitchen was backed up. this is apparently the norm. For appetizers, the French onion soup was a gold star dish. My friend had the goat cheese salad which she said was also very good. The Chicken Cordon Bleu was good, and a hard-to-find dish in NYC. While eating our entrees, the server never checked on how things were or if we needed anything. Once finished, we sat there for a long time waiting for our plates to be cleared, and finally had to "announce" that we were done and request our dessert (as we had ordered the prix fixe menu). For dessert we ordered the Dame Blanche and Profiteroles. I would recommend neither. The ice cream (in both) was poor quality, crystallized and not creamy. A real shame. In all, the meal too 2.5 hours due to the slow service. The soup remains fantastic. I'm downgrading my review to recommend this spot only for soup and salad and not a full, hours-long meal. For that, it's 5 stars, for a full meal a middling 3.
