we really enjoyed our meal at Cafe Cluny and will definitely be back. they don't take brunch reservations but surprisingly there was no wait for a table on saturday at noon. it's cozy and casual, and not quite the same vibe as The Odeon, so i didn't feel too awkward bringing our toddler. no strollers inside allowed, and they have half booths but no high chairs FYI. Overall, the experience was very good. The Monday special eggplant parm was sensational and the service was very good. The one wrinkle: the Steak Frites, which is advertised as "8 oz. aged prime New York strip, French fries or mixed greens for $54" was surprisingly lacking in any flavor whatsoever to this foodie who regularly USDA Prime NY Strip steaks at restaurants and prepares them at home. I wrote to the restaurant two weeks ago about the issue and they've not responded, so I'm leaving this review. Order the eggplant parm, but skip the steak frites. read more

Went to Cafe Cluny with my husband for a bday dinner - we had a reservation and arrived 15-minutes early. We were seated immediately and the food was excellent. Service leaves a lot to be desired, hence my 3 star review. First, the host knew it was a birthday dinner, and there were three tables to choose from - two by the host stand and a table with booth seating. We were sat near the host stand, which provided us the "show" portion of our "dinner and a show." There was an argument at the host stand between two hosts that was made known to anyone in earshot. It was unprofessional and put a damper on what could have been a lovely atmosphere. Second, our appetizer order was all wrong - no Parmesan on the French fries, which was then delivered in a cup for us to add-on (no spoon given) and we were served the wrong salad. All in all, our food was excellent, and I'd hate to not recommend or go back because of a bad table and service. read more

My wife loves their Dirty Martini, so we knew we had to come back. Their version uses tomato water, which makes it really stand out from other martinis in the city. We made a reservation for 12:15 and saw a line out the door. We arrived early around 11:45 and the hostess seated us promptly without any issues, which we really appreciated given how busy it was. I ordered the steak frites with au poivre sauce and my wife had the Breakfast Club sandwich. The steak itself was decent, but the au poivre sauce was absolutely perfect and really made the dish. My wife wasn't thrilled with her egg, which came out much runnier than expected, especially since the menu lists it as medium. We also shared the French onion soup, which was probably the best version of the soup I've ever had: rich, deeply flavored broth and a great cheesy top. The staff throughout the meal was attentive and friendly. The only downside is that the tables are quite close together, and with everyone's winter jackets, getting in and out of your seat can be a bit awkward. Overall, we'll definitely be back, even though it's a bit of a trek for us. My wife will return for that tomato water Dirty Martini, and I'll be back for the French onion soup. read more

Went in while passing by, didn't expect it to be so busy from the outside but every seat was filled! It's a cute French spot, the indoors feel so homey and vintage. Lots of seating, inside and outside. Def on the more expensive side but hey, it's French.. The burger was good, hard to mess up in my opinion. My one friend in New York City and I had dinner at Cafe Cluny, named for a French street, the other night. I'd go there again. We selected it, as one does, based on proximity. He added it was not the old school type made from. beans. I have no reason to doubt him. It was better than those high-tech offerings. If I had not known the protein was plant based, I would have been fooled. It was juicy. The French fries also were terrific. My standard there is McDonald's. That may be what I am accustomed to, from childhood. They did not skimp. The burger had so many pickle strips, I gave my friend two, and I still had too much. The fries were generous in quantity. My friend had the meatballs and polenta, a special (it is based on days of the week). I also had the filthy martini. It was tomato water and garlic. It was not overpowering in alcohol content. Not a typical pot pie, however, I was pleasantly surprised by the aroma and flavor with the chunky pieces of mushrooms (forgot what kind), but this was excellent. Wife had the linguini and clams. Spicy! Very good. I would definitely order this. If you're not into spice, have them remove or cut it in half but considering the cool weather, it was perfect. The half dozen oysters and wine were great, although my wife's Pinot was better than my cab. I've been wanting to try this trendy celeb-hotspot French restaurant in the West Village for a while and was excited when my friend suggested we go for dinner. The interior is cozy and has a charming cafe style decor, but is on the smaller side. They also have a patio with outdoor seating and fans, which is where we sat for a 7 pm dinner reservation in the summer (which did get a bit too hot!). I personally love eating breakfast foods all day (and love French omelettes), so I ordered the Omelette with sautéed mushrooms, ham, sautéed onions, and Gruyère. It came with a side of fries. My friend got the Cluny Burger. My omelette was tasty, not as fluffy as it could've been but was still airy and the fillings were delicious. The fries were crispy and salty. I tried a bite of my friend's burger and it was good, but not great. I also ordered a glass of Chablis (nice and refreshing on a hot day). Service was helpful and very attentive. Overall I'm glad I got the chance to try this place, but am not sure if I'd come back. The food was good, but pricey. Super cute cafe on a charming Chelsea corner. Drinks were great, the Cluny Martini top notch if a bit tiny, and the mustard sauce went amazingly well with the shrimp cocktail.
