I enjoyed a beautiful meal here. After a day of museum-hopping, the atmosphere was relaxed, calm with a unique menu. The Grilled Halloumi was served with a sweet onion and fig base. The slight sweetness was the perfect counterpoint to the earthy cheese. I don't believe I've ever had Corned Pork Collar, but this was as delightful as any other collar I've had. Served in a flavorful broth, I quickly gave up the fork and scooped pork, cabbage, fresh parsley and pear(?) all together for a mouthful of interest. Based on their recommendation, I accompanied both corses with a nice Sauvignon Blanc that had an almost cider-like flavor. It was so good. The food was phenomenal- from the appetizers and small plates to the mains you will not go wrong! We were seated in the back of the restaurant which allowed us a more intimate dining experience as it can easily fill up on a busy weekend. The smoked bluefish appetizer was a fan favorite of us all, as well as the bread with spring garlic butter! The pickles, cheese, and salami were also a hit but would definitely order two of that was the only appetizer you were getting The steak and fries - cooked to perfection! I am still drooling over the dish as I write this. My husband enjoyed his fried quail as well and we left feeling plenty full but not overly stuffed! Just enough room for dessert! Houseman was a great peek into what a non-tourist restaurant can be in NYC. We had a great meal there. The vibe was perfect, the service was very attentive and our food was top notch! Our waitress was so cute and lovely. Menami - I am spelling her name phonetically here so please excuse - is a great asset to the restaurant. She was charming and funny, attentive with a good personality. My spouse and I both had the same meal - the hamburger - and it really hit a high mark. Each burger had 2 patties and they were cooked to perfection; the meat was high quality. The onion spread was a bit sweet for my spouse but I found it a great balance to the burger and the swiss cheese. The bun is about the best bun I have ever come across in a big burger! All in all, I wish we lived in the neighborhood so we could make Houseman a frequent place for us. Looking around, it seemed that lots of locals were here. They knew the waitstaff and often ordered without looking at the menu. I highly recommend Houseman. Unlike restaurants where it is hard to decide what to order because everything looks good, I had a hard time deciding what to order because nothing off the brunch menu really stood out. We ended up getting the omelette, eggs Benedict, and the lunch burger. The burger and maitake mushrooms in the omelette were overly salty. The best item was probably the fries that came with the burger. Omelette filled with an excessive amount of chewy mushroom, raclette cheese and drizzled with maple syrup on top. Egg itself was tender. Cheeseburger with jalapeño and bacon on a not interesting bun. The eggs Benedict salad dressing on the frisée salad was also not right and instead of an English muffin the eggs are served on some hard dry scone/biscuit. Eggs were nicely runny. This is not my neighborhood but we went all the way there just to try their brunch. All three members of our group enjoyed it. When you first sit down they serve you some really good pieces of some homemade (sweet potato?) loaf. Later, My sister had the frisée salad which was delicious, my mother had the steak and eggs which was a big portion and she loved it, I ordered the tornado omelette, which was a little small for me but was delicious. The tornado omelet sits atop a bed of sautéed Maitake mushrooms. I would definitely go back for the salad. read more

My friend and I walked into Houseman at 6:15pm on a Friday with no reservation. There were 5 open seats at the bar and half the tables were free. The hostess was very nice and offered to sit us either at an outside or inside table but cautioned that we'd only have until 7:30 (because of other reservations) to dine, or said we could sit at the bar which had no time restrictions. So we opted for the bar knowing we usually get dinner and a few drinks. My friend got the halibut special and cocktail and I got the steak frites and a beer. We also shared an appetizer. My dish was wonderful; the hangar steak was perfectly cooked and seasoned and the French fries were exceptionally crispy. We proceeded to have 2 more glasses of wine while having a nice conversation at the bar. I wish this review ended here which would have been a 5 star experience. Around 8pm, in the middle of the 2nd glass of wine, the bartender slides the check in front of us without a word. We were a bit confused and said oh...I guess that's our cue to leave? The bartender seemed a bit taken aback and said oh sorry, did you want to order more? As we were debating whether to answer, a gentleman who ended up being the manager, Mac, swoops in behind us and exclaims that we're taking up spots of people waiting outside who want to dine and that this is the only place people can get Houseman's food but that we can get drinks anywhere. Still a bit shocked we said ok understood, quickly paid our nearly $300 bill (leaving a 20% tip), and left as the bartender and hostess seemed uneasy about the whole thing, almost as if they knew what just happened was not ok. Outside, conversing on the sidewalk about what just happened, we still felt odd about the interaction and opted to go back to share some feedback with Mac, hoping it was some misunderstanding or miscommunication. We asked to speak with him outside so it would be quiet and discreet. We explained that it was a very awkward and embarassing way of asking us to leave and the immediate defensive explanation from him was something we'd never experienced before. Typically the manager would gently explain the situation and ask if there's anything else you want which is essentially a nice way of saying please leave. Sometimes they even offer you to stand at the bar, and classy places will even offer you a round of drinks to vacate the table (note - we had no expectation or desire for free drinks). Hell, if Mac just came up and said "hey there are 2 people who are ready to sit and eat and spend more money than you" I probably would have laughed and been ok with that. Mac was defensive the entire conversation. He went on to reiterate that we were taking up space that their "regulars" were waiting to dine at. I attempted to defuse, telling him I get it and that it's all business and not personal. He balked and said it wasn't about business or money at all and he wanted to make as many people happy as possible serving Houseman's food. I mentioned that in making two people happy sitting them, he made 2 people unhappy unceremoniously kicking them out. He shrugged. Sensing we weren't really getting anywhere, we explained that we just wanted to provide constructive feedback for future interactions with guests, and he immediately shot back that he's been doing this a long time, he knows what he's doing, and most guests "have the self-awareness" to know when to leave. Mind you, we weren't nursing 1 app and 1 drink, we were continuing to order drinks after dinner which at ANY restaurant gives you unspoken permission to keep a walk-in bar seat. We also mentioned how we were told the bar did not have a time limit. This would have been easy for Mac to say sorry you were told that but that's not the case, but he kept being defensive and essentially put the blame back on us for not 'knowing' we couldn't keep handing them $20 for glasses of wine. Finally, I said that we had a lovely time and we just wanted to provide feedback and it did not seem that he was receiving what we were sharing. He immediately responded that he "did not have to receive what we say and he knows he's not in the wrong here." Again completely missing the point that it's not about right or wrong, but the manner in which we were asked to leave. I'm glad we spoke with Mac because it just reconfirmed that the poor experience we had was not a miscommunication or misinterpretation of the interaction but a systemic way Mac the manager is running the restaurant. I'm sad to leave this review, because it was a nice night with good food and drinks up until that moment. I rarely if ever leave 1-star reviews but I felt compelled after this really poor experience with Mac, a manager whose self-anointed experience is not in sync with how he engages guests. Perhaps the talk about accommodating neighborhood "regulars" was coded language and I can read between the lines, but Mac does not have to worry about me returning to Houseman. read more

Visiting NY for the holiday and we found this spot while strolling through the area. Restaurant is very small but clean and unique. The atmosphere was inviting and calm. We sat at the bar and had a couple of drinks. We didn't eat anything but they do have a menu with small bites and such. This would be a nice spot for a small gathering or happy hour meet up. This was an awesome Tasting Collective dining club event we attended. It was a 6-course Elevated Seasonal Dinner Series. The inside is a bit small, long and narrow with a beautiful bar. The Chef of Houseman, Chef Baldwin came out to greet us with interesting background and history. We got to try Preserved Blue Fish, Greek Salad, Fried Whitebait, Grilled Tuna, Pork & Clam, and Malt Ice Cream. They were all very good in quality, some more interesting than other, and all very tasty. I especially enjoyed the grilled tuna, fried whitebait, and Pork & Clam dishes. They don't try to offer something super fancy, but more "everyday food" that are homey with comfy flavors. I wish if we got to try their popular burgers and fries, but they were not part of the course meal. We had a nice dinner here, we were blessed with really fun people at our table. Having dinner with a great company always makes the food taste better, thanks guys! The staffs were efficient and polite, they did a nice job taking care of us as a whole. If it were the absolute best, I'd be giving a 5/5 star review, but after eating here I'd say it was definitely worth the 4 stars. The fries were super oily and crunchy yet I couldn't stop eating them until they were all gone. The aioli was a nice touch, distracting me from the fact that I typically only eat fries with ketchup. Steak: I ordered medium and it really tasted and looked like I got medium rare. Nonetheless, I ate every single piece and it was delicious. In almost 20 years of living in New York City, I have never had as terrible experience as I did at Houseman last night. The manager, Mac, was beyond rude: he treated my friend and I with contempt and disdain. My friend and I had a work event around the corner and decided to go here for dinner. I live nearby and it had come highly recommended by my friends and neighbors. We arrived shortly after 6 pm and were given three options: outside table, inside table with a time limit, or the bar (which we were explicitly told by the hostess had no time limit). We chose the bar seats, had a few round of drinks, entrees and a side. They didn't offer us dessert and we were then abruptly given the check. I said half jokingly, I guess we are leaving? As my friend and I decided if we wanted to order another glass of wine, the manager inserted himself and said that he didn't have enough seats for people to just order drinks at the bar. Houseman food is only served there and there were people waiting for these seats. (For reference, it was about 8 pm and we had been there less than 2 hours.) Other restaurants will politely say they need the seats back but you are welcome to continue having a drink by the bar or on the bench outside. When this has happened to me before, I respectfully wrap it up and turn over the table. (Especially since Covid, we know restaurants are hurting and the economics are tough.) I was so shocked by Mac's lack of hospitality that we paid and walked out of the restaurant. The way we were treated felt pretty awful so I went back and asked politely if we could chat outside. We didn't want to make a scene. We reiterated we were told there was no time limit at the bar. We shared with him that we completely understand the seats need to turn over but the way it was handled was rude, inhospitable, and made us feel bad. If this place is about the experience we want to let you know we had a bad experience. He then disagreed with us and told us we should have been self-aware enough to know that there were people waiting. To that, we said it was clear that he was not receiving our feedback. He then said he didn't need to receive our feedback. He has so many other clients and regulars (and waved his hand across the crowd) that he didn't need to accommodate us. Even if he maintained he had done nothing wrong, there were still many points along the way he could have diffused the situation. He could have said: I'm sorry you were told the wrong information about the time limit, would you like to buy a drink and sit out on the bench now, or even: I hear you, thank you for the feedback. Instead, he chose to blame the customer for their bad experience (that they paid for). He was argumentative and condescending. His job is to make guests feel welcome and have a good experience. He made it clear we were not welcome there. read more

We arrived about 830 pm on Wednesday evening and were seated almost right away without a reservation. It was pretty busy with only outside tables open and we were a bit surprised. It's a small space with a linear bar to one side that opens out into the street with large accordion style doors. The menu was comprised of many different red meat options (burgers + fries), fish, a pork dish, mussels (they were out of), scallops (they were out of), and smaller veggie plates. My partner and I each ordered a veggie plate and we stopped to get a slice of pizza on the way home. Found this place through Infatuation listed as one of the best burgers in nyc and it definitely did not disappoint. Located in Tribeca area by Canal street on a less popular NYC street, this place came equipped with a bar and good seating for groups and couples. We came here on a Saturday night with no reservations and were seated right away. We started off with the olives, pickled veggies, cheese and meats app. For $7, it was a good amount to share between two people. The flavoring from the seasoning and olive oil was actually quite muted. It needed a bit salt to spruce it up. We then shared the crispy cod over mango slaw. The execution was really nice. The fried cod could have used a bit more seasoning on its own but when coupled with the mango slaw, it packed a good punch. Very well made. The cod was fresh and super crisp. Two large pieces, easily shared between two people. We also shared the burger with fries. You have the option to choose salad too but I just love fries and their fries were very good! Crisp, hot and plentiful. I couldn't finish it all. It also came with pickles that were very lightly pickled. It was till pretty much a cucumber and the flavoring was again muted. As for the burger itself, super juicy. Two patties, swiss cheese and caramelized onions between a potato bun. It was honestly very well made. I especially liked the fact that although the meat itself was super juicy, the bun held really well. It was never soggy which I greatly appreciated. I would definitely go back for the burger. Everything was fresh and light, and we loved the seasonal ingredients. It was really nice to have a beautiful paper menu rather than a QR code scan on your phone to read from. The restaurant itself is breezy from the nearby Hudson - perfect for a summer evening. The atmosphere is chic and elegant without being too pretentious or trendy, unlike many other spots in the neighboring Soho area. With two cocktails, three apps and a main, the bill was still affordable by NYC standards. Definitely don't miss out on the spicy pineapple margarita and the bread and ramp butter. read more

Ventured down to Houseman for burger club this month! Very cute little restaurant pretty far off the beaten path and it was very easy to get a reservation a few days before for a party of 3. The restaurant itself was very cozy, not fancy, café type feel. Service was good, staff was attentive. After ordering a bottle of rose and perusing the not terribly lengthy menu, my friends and I ordered a few apps and 2 Houseman burgers to share. The Bennington Stracciatella was amazing. Highly recommended. We also had the prosciutto which was really fresh and was served with perfectly ripe plums and pistachios. The combo was great. Our 2 apps came out separately, but I wished they had come out together because they would've paired really nicely together! Now the reason we came: The Houseman Burger. Not gonna lie, I was disappointed. The burger comes with Swiss cheese, mushrooms and caramelized onions. No ability to request cooking temperature, which is common for those thin patties. It was good, and I love a good soft potato bun, but there was no special spark to the meat for me. What was great though - the fries! They were so perfectly crispy and we devoured them all. If I returned, I'd come for the other items over the burger. Better quality burgers for the not so low price of $20! read more

I knew I had to try this place after reading the NY Times' review, where the writer could not stop raving about the roasted chicken dish. I must admit, I don't generally order chickens in restaurants, as it is not my favorite protein. Although, I do love, LOVE the chicken dish from Balaboosta, but let's not get sidetracked. Generally, when other people highly recommend a dish, I tend to be very susceptible to their suggestions, in short, I am an advertiser's dream. Long story short, I wasn't blown away by the chicken, it was just average. I liked the texture of the crispy skin, and the accompanied salad, particularly the fava beans. But I thought the dish itself was too bland, I wish they would season the chicken more before roasting it. We also tried the Pork Terrine, which was just mediocre, and I honestly can't recall much details about the dish. Dessert was my favorite part of the meal, we tried the salted peanut tart and the chocolate molten cake, both of which were great. I though the peanut tart was unique with an interesting mix of saltiness and sweetness, although it would be too heavy for one person to finish. The chocolate cake was perfection, I love the bitterness of the moist dark chocolate, and ice cream is always the perfect companion to chocolate. Overall, it was a pleasant dining experience, our waitress was very nice and had great suggestions for the wine. The restaurant is not very conveniently located and it is quite close to the entrance of the tunnel. I am not sure I would trek all the way out there to try it again. If you love chicken, I would highly recommend for you to try Balaboosta instead, you won't regret it! read more
