Extremely disappointing experiences at Le Grand Comptoir on two separate occasions. My first experience occurred when my flight was significantly delayed until late in the evening. The restaurant was still actively serving guests, with numerous people eating and drinking at the time. I politely asked the bartender for a simple soda water. Instead of offering any explanation, alternative, or basic courtesy, he immediately refused service. There was no effort to help, no kindness, and no acknowledgment that I was a stranded traveler dealing with a stressful delay. Several weeks later, I returned during normal business hours and unfortunately encountered the same employee. This time, I simply asked for a cup of ice. Once again, I was told no. He stated that he could not provide a cup and that I would need to sit as a customer before he would provide ice. When I asked what other options were available, none were offered. The interaction felt exactly like the first one: rigid, dismissive, and completely lacking in hospitality. Thankfully, the manager was present during my second visit. After taking some time to think about how I wanted to handle the situation, I obtained a cup elsewhere in the airport, filled it with ice, and returned to speak directly with her. She listened to my concerns, apologized, and was able to help immediately. That experience highlighted my main concern. The issue is not the ice. The issue is not the water. The issue is not even the policy. Businesses have policies, and I respect that. The issue is that it should not require a manager to fulfill a basic human need or to show basic human kindness. Travelers passing through airports are often exhausted, stressed, delayed, dehydrated, dealing with medical conditions, rushing between flights, or simply trying to make it through a difficult day. Hospitality matters in those moments. A simple explanation, a respectful response, or an effort to offer alternatives would have completely changed both interactions. What stood out most was the complete absence of empathy, hospitality, problem-solving, or customer care. Being told "no" is one thing. Being treated as though your reasonable request is an inconvenience is another. I am genuinely surprised that after so many reviews mentioning service concerns, management has not been more successful in addressing the underlying customer-service issues. Looking through the reviews, it is clear that I am not the only customer who has left feeling disappointed. I appreciate the manager taking the time to listen and assist me, and she deserves credit for handling the situation professionally. Unfortunately, the fact that management intervention was required at all is precisely why I am leaving this review. You should not have to seek out a manager over something as simple as a cup of ice or a glass of water. Humanity can do better than this. Airport hospitality can do better than this. Pro tip! That padded bench along one side? Each table has a power outlet! Three stars for existing when there's nothing better to do but drink for 3 hours while waiting for your connecting flight. But then they lose a star for the sucky "prime rib" sandwich I ordered. Quick math told me that I was going to need more than 2 8-oz glasses to survive the 3 hour wait. It also told me that buying 2 8-oz glasses was going to cost more than an entire bottle. So I bought a bottle and waited to be judged, but the sullen dude who took my order didn't bat an eye. He probably deals w/ people like me every day. You know how it is when you go to one of the "nicer" restaurants in Disneyland and you quickly find that everything is still very low quality food but with nice presentation. This place is like that. They're putting lipstick on a pig, when the reality is that I'd have paid a lot more for a better-quality sandwich. And now here I am, panning their business. What made the sandwich suck? It's cured meat! That's why my pic makes it look alluringly medium rare. It's pink because it's been treated w/ curing salt and it tastes more like pastrami than roast beef. It left a strong processed-meat aftertaste. I should have known not to trust an airport "prime rib" sandwich that only costs $16. Actually, I did know. I saw all the funny reviews talking about the hard-boiled eggs benedicts (!!!). You know they buy those pre-boiled eggs in bulk bags at CostCo, LOL. But still, I had hopes. The menu is greatly reduced from the options of the past. Looks like they're struggling to survive this whole covid mess. Maybe after the pandemic is over they'll go back to a wider variety? I would have totally dug a cheese board. I wish they had something sweet to eat as an option. A scoop of sorbet or slice of cheesecake would keep us in the seats, drinking even more booze. Never, not even once, did my server come by and pour another glass for me. I was on my own after the bottle was set down. He was extremely inattentive & literally wandered off for over 30 minutes- outside the restaurant to the store next door to chat w/ a buddy over there. They came with house kettle chips, so that was a nice touch to get a side w/ an appetizer. The kettle chips were pretty good, but lacked flavor. Almost over baked, too, in my opinion. The rillettes had a generous portion of the smoked salmon topping. It was a little on the raw side, for the smoked salmon I'm used to, being from Alaska. But, it had very good flavor. I just wish there was most added to the mix. It was a bit on the plain side. The double gin & tonic I ordered was VERY weak. I don't believe it was a double, at all. So, the bartender gets 0 credit here. I don't appreciate paying that much for a glass of tonic water w/ a splash of alcohol. But really, the waiter was the worst part. He wasn't friendly at all. Did not even ask if I would like any water. The food came out quick enough, less than 15 minutes. But, he did not come back even ONCE to check on me. I actually really wanted a glass of water! I watched him leave and walk next door. Then sat there for well over 20 minutes waiting for him to come back- I needed the check so I could pay, leave & catch my flight! Plus, there was a line of others waiting to be seated that were clearly confused as to why there was 0 service. This is one of those times I wish I would have spoken up and said something before I left. I don't think leaving a tip to reflect is enough when this person really should be aware of their horrible customer service. And, someone needs to train the bartender.
