Went a couple times but the last time we waited forever... Litterally!! We had to ask the waiters a couple times as no one was passing by and not even taking our order (and we had our baby in the stroller). The waiter was kinda bitchy and told me "it was like this in NYC you know (about the wait)" probably thinking I was a tourist... The food eventually came one hour and a half later, not at the same time for my partner and I, and was sort of cold and honestly not very good... Came in a group of 12 for a birthday dinner on a week night. I would describe this place as rustic casual French. The wood seats/benches are not the most comfortable, but at least the tables are set far enough apart from one another. I ordered the scallops (not a big portion as in most restaurants but very good) and my fiancé ordered the steak tartare (came with salad and fries). Both entrees were delicious. Someone in the group ordered the quiche which looked so good and came with a salad. They leave baskets of complimentary bread and butter on the table. For dessert, my fiancé and I shared a creme brûlée. Service was decent the entire night. Prices are incredibly reasonable. We plan to have brunch here as well! read more

went for dinner. i was kind of disappointed. i could have sworn i'd been to a le gamin in the city 4 or 5 years ago. it was amazing and I was almost certain that this was the same people. dunno. the onion soup was too sweet. you really missed out on the savory, smokiness of the onions. and they wasn't nearly enough gruyere. the lamb shank was nicely done and the merguez was spicy and really flavorful but felt a little dry. and the frites weren't too bad. it wasn't the worst meal ever but i was hoping for something a little better. read more

I'll come back when Foie Gras is not served here anymore ... I have eaten here several times, and liked it, but unfortunately they still serve 'foie gras' (fat liver), that controversial 'delicacy' produced by force-feeding geese and ducks with corn mash through a tube pushed into their esophagus until their liver swells to bursting point. A number of countries and other jurisdictions, like California, have laws against force feeding or the sale of foie gras, so why Le Gamin serves this in animal-friendly Greenpoint-Williamsburg, I don't know. We where waiting for our food for over 30 minutes, which was not great, and our check came with the tip included even if we where a table of 3 just because we spoke Spanish. They lied to is saying they always include it and our neighbor table said that was not true because their check came with no tip included. Never coming back. read more

I was highly disappointed to bring my parents, visiting me from France, to Le Gamin,a place where I have eaten brunch several times before. We were all extremely excited to be eating at a French restaurant, until we had the worst dining experience in our lives: 1) We asked for a bottle of wine and were only brought glasses of wine. We had to ask the server for the rest of the bottle. 2) We ordered olives, but were not brought a pit bowl/plate.We had to ask for one (we actually got a share plate instead). 3) Our meals all came out wrong. We told the server that our orders were wrong. They did fix it, but the food was not appealing to the eye and was extremely bland. I must say I did not eat my food. 4) The wait staff did not come up even once to ask how our food was. They did not even ask what was wrong with the food when taking our plates off the table (the food was not touched and they charged us for it!) 5) We were so dissatisfied with our meal and, of course, hungry that we walked to Anella, a few blocks away to eat (honestly we should have went to Anella from the start). Came here for lunch the other day and really enjoyed the relaxed chill atmosphere. I started with a custom made crepe with organic chicken, goat cheese, and ratatouille which was terrific. My friend enjoyed the mussels and for dessert we both had a cappuccino which came in a beautiful glass with a super frothy too just the way I like it. I also enjoyed the atmosphere and all the neat paintings on the wall. Can't wait to come in for dinner soon. read more

I downloaded Yelp just to write this, my first restaurant review ever. Without a doubt, the worst service experience I've ever had in all my years. Arrived on a Saturday at 12.30p. Sat immediately inside by front window. Was brought water and two glasses. There were three of us. Another person dropped four menus on the table. Again, only three of us. No one came back to take food or drink order. After ten minutes, a woman setting up a table asked if anyone ever took my order. I said no. With a legit sigh, she took our order. I handed back to her the menus. She brought me coffee and it was delicious, in fairness. 15 minutes late, our order came out. For the price, expected next level cuisine. It was glorified diner fare. It took another 10 minutes to get the attention of anyone to take a drink order. Drinks came out quickly. Coke bottle still had cap on. Needed bottle opener to do that. Took another 10 minutes before drink was opened and brought back to table. No one swing by to conduct the typical, everything ok, how we doing, check in. We were ignored totally. Took 10 minutes to get the attention of anyone to get a check. When I did, it was the server who brought our menus that glanced over and when he didn't bother to walk over to our table, I did the old school check sign in the air. He dropped off the check. Waited, waited, waited for someone to collect it. A different person came over to take my card and check. Came back quickly with receipt. Started to clear off table as I signed it. Not once were we greeted by anyone, either upon arrival or exit. No hey there, welcome or thank you for coming. I wanted to like this place so badly. It's adorable. I speak decent French and lived in France so upon first glance, looked like it could have been a mini vacation from life. We are non intrusive diners and it took everything within me not to say anything to the staff because given the experience, you just knew they didn't care at all. read more

I really wanted this place to be as good as I remembered it to be! Used to go to the one in prospect heights and would occasionally go to the Franklin street location and always was impressed with the Menu full of French classics and the service was always spot on. The place itself has a lot of charm but I was disappointed with the lack of quality service. I felt as if was an inconvenience to the host that directed us to the table. There wasn't a ton of people so I was put off with the non welcoming greeting. Our server may have been new and I get it can be tough but I do think they would benefit from more training including knowing the menu. We were given the wrong order and then when we said it wasn't our food, they took it away without saying by anything. We were served and the food was fairly healthy but fairly bland and not as special as I remember it used to be. As we dined we heard other table complaining about the service...our host seemed to have realized that there was some dissatisfaction among the diners and become a great deal more friendly...which seemed disingenuous. This place used to be so good and I was thrilled to have stumbled upon for but I have no desire to go back. read more

Have dined at Le Gamin on several occasions for brunch and dinner and have always been beyond satisfied. I was compelled to write a review after an absolutely fantastic meal this weekend. My daughter and I were seated in their beautiful backyard garden area. We both ordered specials of the day. I had the beef sirloin with haricots verts, while my daughter ordered the salmon with spinach risotto. The meal and the ambiance were just perfection. They serve the most delicious baguette and homemade creamy butter while you look over the menu. The service was very attentive and informative, offering spot on advice about the menu. The only problem I had (which was not a real problem since they offer an ATM on premises) is that they are cash only. I really love this place, check it out. read more

I think the reason this guy has a restaurant here is that no one in France would ever eat his food ! Really sorry to say this, but the crepe with Nutella I had here was a cold stale thing with a chocolate spread that had nothing to do with Nutella. I think they had it ready for at least one day before they served it to me. Awful! Before that, I had a diner here, a special of the night, cold cut - another cold and ungraceful plate. It is possible that some of their food tastes good, but I didn't have a chance to witness that. It is pity because the place looks cute and that was the reason I initially went there. The service is also very slooooow. In addition, they drop half of the things they're trying to take out of the kitchen. Plus, they got B in the sanitary inspection. What else? read more

My problem was the service. And I looked through the reviews before I posted this one, it's a problem. You go to brunch on a nice sunny day off from work, you don't expect the service to kill your mood. I get there, and I start to the back where my friends are. The waitress tells me that there are no seats left in the back. I explain that I'm meeting friends. When I go through the kitchen to get to the back. I see that there are extra tables.... okay. I sit down with friends I haven't seen in a long time and order tea with lots of honey. I have a sore throat. It shows up without the honey. I ask for the honey again. She brings another table who sat down and ordered after me their coffee and creamers, so I know the only way I can get honey before the tea turns tepid is to go to the kitchen and get it myself. read more

Great French café in Greenpoint. Tasty food and a lovely outdoor garden with seating. I was going to order an omelet but then I saw the salad Nicoise come out for another table. It looked so delicious that I changed my order, and I was not disappointed. It was a good size (I finished it and was satisfied, but not stuffed) and the ingredients tasted really fresh. My only complaint is that the drink I ordered did not come until I reminded the waiter about it, and it was hard to get his attention. I will definitely be back. read more

Housing Works has nice lamps, guys, or the Salvation Army? my $9 crepe was miniscule, flat and came with only a small handful of nicely-dressed greens. the $6 dessert crepe was even smaller and sparser. gazing on the neighboring table's lush nicoise salads and plump fries only made us more envious. I am also sick of the trend of just having espresso drinks (at $3/pop) instead of drip coffee - we stay up late, we need more caffeine than that. wish the place were a little more generous and less uneven! onward and upwards! read more

I love french food, even god-awful French Roast I will occasionally enjoy. Le Gamin is the perfect little spot to have in the neighborhood. It is not high-end french cuisine, it is just a good mix flavors. I had a wonderful soup and their sandwiches are excellent. That being said, I've tried their more daring dishes and they are just not quite up to par. Such as the steak which seemed as if it was frozen. But listen, the prices are unbeatable and that god damn sausage they have is killer. I know I am super happy that there is a French spot in this sea of Thai restaurants and bars. read more

Stopped in here today for lunch. It was the closest place around where I was at the moment. Kind of tucked away and nothing much around until you get back on Manhattan. I walked in and noticed that it was a sit down restaurant but luckily the waitress said I could do a to go order. It's a small quaint place with beautiful natural light coming in. Really my kind of place actually. They had a pretty good selection of different foods. Crepes, soups, salads, sandwiches. All French style. I ordered a spinach, goat cheese, and caramelized onions crepe and a hot mint tea. It took a reasonable amount of time to make considering I had two other orders, about 20 mins. The wait staff was really nice and considerate. My crepe was absolutely delicious. Then again, I think it would be hard to mess that combination up. It came with some sort of sauce that I imagine went with the salad but I used it for the salad and the crepe. It had a bit of horseradish flavor which usually i'm not into at all but it was just enough. I really enjoyed the whole meal. Definitely was sad when I was finished, that there wasn't more. The prices are a little more than I normally like to spend, only cause i'm frugal. The crepe was $10 along with the hot mint tea that was about $3. I think it was worth it though. Service was a tad bit slow but they were filled to the max in there. The patrons actually seemed a little bit stuffy so I actually felt more sorry for the wait staff. I came here for a Sunday brunch - it was OK. I was really excited since it looks so cute from outside, but I was definitely underwhelmed once actually seated to dine. It took about 20 minutes for someone to come to our table and ask us what we wanted to drink. Once we ordered it took 45 minutes for the food to come out, and the restaurant was relatively empty. The food itself was decent, but not delectable. I had the omelette, which is pretty hard to mess up so I can't really judge the food from that alone. The mimosas and bellinis are good - they use fresh squeezed juices and purees from what I can tell. Overall, yes I tried Le Gamin --- will I be back? It is doubtful, considering how many other awesome places there are in Greenpoint and Williamsburg. read more

Stumbled on this cute place after attending an event at the Brooklyn Expo center across the street. Only downside was cash only. My friend and I each got a crepe where we could pick three ingredients. I had goat cheese, smoked salmon, and caramelized onions. It was prepared perfectly and the greens on the side were a wonderful and light accompaniment. I am by no means super knowledgable about French cuisine, but the meal definitely brought me back to the week I spent there last year! read more
