After reading the reviews on Yelp (and experiencing this horrible, chilly, Houston weather), I decided to try this place out. I bought a cronut, a cinnamon roll, and a pain au chocolat (or a chocolate croissant). I don't recall the prices, but the cronut was like somewhere between $1-2 (someone correct me on this), the croissant was $2.25, and the cinnamon roll was $1.25. I understand that croissants at legit French bakeries (like La Riviera) range from $2-3, but this was NOT your state-of-the-art croissant. It was EXTREMELY BUTTERY AND GREASY. However, the good part is that they were very generous on the chocolate. I actually don't know if I like croissants- I seem to be on the search of a very light, doesn't-make-the-bag-greasy type of croissant, but I can't seem to find anything like that. The chocolate wasn't the semi-sweet one I was used to at La Riviera, but it was evenly spread out, unlike the traditional pain au chocolat. (Coincidentally,I had a mini-party in my French class that day and I must admit that plain croissants + Nutella is FAR BETTER THAN ANY PAIN AU CHOCOLAT. Especially when you can control how much you put. And evenly spread it out.) I couldn't really finish my croissant so I proceeded to the cronut. I don't remember what the price was, but I think it's cheaper than the real one in New York. That's good, cause the quality, taste, look, and everything was cheaper, too. The outside was just like a glazed donut, and the inside was just a regular donut with lots and lots of butter added into the mix. If there were any layers, which I couldn't see, there was very little space separating them, resulting in what I would call a "butter doughnut." It was a rather interesting to taste though. If there was less glaze, I think I might have enjoyed it better. However, it was too sweet for me and I didn't really like it that much. The cinnamon roll was HUGGEEE. It's worth your money. It's like a tiny bit smaller than the palm of my hand, but I just thought it was gigantic. As for the taste, I thought it was just a glazed doughnut rolled out and spiraled about. I did see some cinnamon along the edges, but I mostly tasted about 98% doughnut. Not that it's a bad thing, though. This was probably my favorite out of all the others I bought. In the end, I don't believe I'll be coming here again, but I do think it's better than Shipley's. I mean their doughnuts are. Why? Because I don't really like light, fluffy doughnuts. To me, I prefer thick ones that are filling. However, I don't like this place because they over-spread their glaze. The cronut was just too sweet, and the croissant was too buttery and greasy for my tastes. I hope that once the hype dies down, I can buy myself a cronut at DA one day. read more

Stopped in this morning to grab a quick treat to go before heading to the Dog Show at Reliant. Great kolache. I tried the sausage with jalapeno: tasty breading, and the sausage was huge (not one of those wimpy little cocktail-sized ones). I was looking for a little more "kick" from the jalapeno, though (I love my jalapenos), but it was still quite yummy. A nice choice. Definitely worth a morning stop. read more

Fluffy and light yet dense enough to not be too squishy, I love ordering this basic one so much! Kolaches are whatever for me. Hands down though, my favorite donut here is the red velvet glazed cake donut! I ordered a box for my group and wasn't able to try the cream cheese version but hey, an excuse to go again?! Just left there with a good size order: a boudin & Italian chicken Kolache, donut holes, cinnamon twist and a dang cronut (a push sell by the worker guy). All were good EXCEPT for the 4 sausage kolaches I ordered WITH NO CHEESE. Got home and guess what, all had friggin' cheese....WTF?!?!? Called them immediately to tell them of their mistake; explained I am I'm lactose intolerant and was very disappointed at their mistake because I was super craving me some sausage kolaches = ( He gave no apology, just a "ok, bring them back." Uh no, not driving all the way back out there. Would have been nice maybe to say "Sorry again, my name is xxxxx, keep your receipt and bring it in next time and I will honor it by giving you the correct ones." That would have good been customer service right there!! Y'all just need to be more careful and respect your paying customers (and actually be apologetic when y'all F up) and not give people the wrong order. read more

This place is great for doughnuts! Having been to far too many doughnut shops to call healthy, I can say this is the place to be. First off, however, this place is more of a pick-and-go type of doughnut shop than it is a 'lets sit down and have a doughnut and a coffee'-shop. There are about 5-6 bar-stools by the window and then one other small table, but other than that, very minimal seating, so I would plan on going somewhere else to eat/drink (although if its just you and another person, okay place to stay for a doughnut or two granted its not too busy). For the doughnuts: DELICIOUS: they have several different doughnut bases: 1) light fluffy, 2) regular cake, 3) buttermilk-cake (these aforementioned ones have all the various toppings for each, glazed, chocolate frosted, sprinkles, etc), and then 3) chocolate cake, 4) velvet cake, 5) blueberry (and a few others I don't remember off the top of my head. I'm a big cake-doughnut fan, and their buttermilk-cake doughnuts were AMAZING! Super moist, fresh, crunchy, and their toppings weren't super sugary so you could enjoy the doughnut itself. I didn't get a chance to drink their coffee, but I saw them being made fresh as I was sitting. They also have apple fritters, croughnuts (were gone by the time I got there around 10:20 on a Sunday morning) and cinnamon rolls which I will definitely be trying in the near future. I have to upgrade to five stars. The staff are always in such an upbeat mood and very welcoming. They're generous with giving free donut holes with purchases and they were one of the only places open near my apartment during hurricane harvey. The pastries and donuts are consistently delicious. Tried the sausage and cheese kolache both with and without jalapeno. I liked the jalapeno version better, but the sausage inside was a bit odd, almost tasted like a hot dog. I couldn't tell for sure what kind of meat it was, which is rather worrisome. It wasn't anything spectacular but satisfied my craving for a savory breakfast. The service this time was incredibly polite/helpful. I only had a credit card on me and was at $3.80 (the min is $4 for credit) but the cashier sent it through anyway. What a nice guy! read more

As many positive reviews I have read about Le Donut, I couldn't wait to try it. My only expectation was to try their breakfast tacos. Sadly that expectation was not met, and I did not have my breakfast taco this morning. They sold out at 6:30 AM! This is a great sign that they must be delicious, but my palate was unable to experience that joy this morning. Therefore I tried their broccoli and cheese empanada/ croissant, which I considered buttery, flaky-goodness. Unfortunately I did not experience my taco, but I did try something unexpected and it reminded me of my time spent in Costa Rica (Pura Vida). From what I experienced today I will be back to get my hands on a Breakfast Taco! read more

Cronuts are greasy and not fresh but still pretty ok. The kolaches aren't great. They're big though. The sausage ones aren't spicy and are very greasy. The boudain kolaches are good and spicy. The chicken kolaches are ok but very rich. Too much for breakfast. The donut holes are good and soft. The red velvet donuts are decent. The service is always very friendly. I love their savory options, my favorites are the small and large sausage and cheese kolaches, and the croissant breakfast sandwiches. Their donuts are starting to exceed Shipley's in my opinion (and I grew up on Shipley's--maybe it's just the Houston ones that suck). I love the donut holes, the fact that their chocolate iced twist still has cinnamon in the dough (Shipleys' twist does not), and the crunchy crispiness of the blueberry cake. They are the kindest donut shop owners and managers I have ever met. They are really generous with their donuts--letting the product speak for itself! My quick stop for breakfast just before heading to school. They people here obviously know you are in a hurry to get a quick breakfast to start off the day to they run around like thier heads chopped up just to serve you. Special greeting as you enter and birghtly lit...or is it just b/c its still dark out? Anyway, I love ordering their $1 donut holes and their Jalepeno and cheese kolache (large). Warmed up by request and out the door I go. The store is right on Almeda and Old Spanish Trail in the same center as the Subway. Forget the shipleys or chains... i stop here to really get the kolaches and breakfast sandwiches that are just so darn cheap and good. They have caffe machines, house brewed coffee, and bottled soda/juices at your disposal. Beware... I approach one time when someone had called the cops b/c their car got broken into. I guess it's been happening more frequent b/c the shop now post warning signs to keep valuables hidden. Those thieves are quick too. then again... you are entering 3rd/4th ward. This review is purely for the cronut. I have been trying to chase down the Grove Cronut truck for a few weeks now with no success, and my friend suggested this place since she heard good things. Seeing that this donut shop is not too far away, I decided to visit. After reading other yelper's reviews, I came early (around 9am) and also called ahead to make sure cronuts were in stock. The place is not fancy looking, but it was small and clean and at 9am on a Sunday morning, there were already several customers enjoying their morning coffee and donuts. To be honest, a first glance at the cronut was quite unappealing. First off, all the cronuts in the display were different shapes and puffiness and the glazed appeared to be be slathered on in a hurry as noted by certain bald patches of missing glaze. However, since I had gotten up early to come here just for the cronut, I was determined to try. My husband and I got two cronuts (regular glazed and chocolate glazed) and a coffee to go. I do have to agree with other yelpers though that friendly wouldn't be the word to describe the lady behind the counter. When she saw us walking through the front door, she said, "how can I help you?" in a monotonous, bored voice, and appeared impatient when I stood at the counter trying to decide which cronut to order. Nevertheless, she moves fast and before we knew it our purchase was complete. One bite into the cronut changed my entire perception. While I had imagined eating a fried croissant in the shape of a donut, my mouth was met with layers and layers of soft, pillowy and fluffy dough, melting in my mouth. It was SO good. I have never experienced anything quite like this. My only complaint was the the glaze is SUPER SUPER sweet, and after two bites I started wiping and flaking off the glaze which turned into desperation when it became apparent the glaze was fixed onto the lovely cronut. I've never been a fan of glazed donuts, and this particular experience was no exception. By the end I was only picking out the inside of the cronut to eat and ended up tossing the rest of the outer glazed layer. While I really really loved the cronut itself, I don't think I'll be coming back in a long time due to the over-sweetness of the glaze. However, I think if you enjoy glazed donuts in general, you'll definitely love this glazed cronut. read more

Been driving by this place and finally got a chance to try it on a morning off. The ladies that own the place are so kind and sweet, and gave me many good recommendations on which donuts to buy (they're pretty good saleswomen too....i bought like $20 worth in one go). They had a delicious boudin kolache, cream chicken kolache, and broccoli/mushroom croissant kolache. Unfortunately they were out of cronuts for the day, but I'll definitely be back earlier next time. They even gave me an extra chocolate donut to go! There's some bar seating indoors, and they sell a wide variety of drinks as well. There is a $5 minimum for credit cards, I believe. Not sure. Stopped by this morning after reading all the reviews. I love that they're open early enough to accommodate med center schedules! I ordered glazed & red velvet donuts, a chocolate croissant, and two breakfast sandwiches. The nice lady threw in some donut holes for free! Everything tasted fresh and was delicious!!! My favorite had to be the chocolate croissant. It was so buttery and melted in my mouth. Reminded me of Paris! Now I feel inclined to try all their croissants!! This morning was my first time visiting Le Donut after a Google search for "cronuts" near my office. One of my coworkers mentioned cronuts and some of us had never tried them. She insisted we must try them, so we called Le Donut to inquire about them and placed an order for a dozen cronuts and dozen normal glazed for pickup. The cronuts had just been made and were piping hot. Yummm! She even included two bags of donut holes and an extra donut for me. Customer service was great. We loved the cronuts and donuts.
