Le Comptoir has attained a reputation for being one of the best bistros in Paris with an affordable pricetag. Raved about by celebrity chefs from Anthony Bourdain to Thomas Keller, Le Comptoir is helmed by none other than Yves Camdeborde, renown for kickstarting the bistronomy movement of serving quality food in casual settings. It's no wonder then that it has been said that securing a reservation for dinner at Le Comptoir is more difficult than winning the lottery! (I've heard of others who have made reservations 7 months in advance!) However, if you are due for a visit to the French capital soon and worry that you would not be able to secure a reservation, take heart in knowing that Le Comptoir does not accept reservations for lunch and as long as you are willing to queue and wait, you will likely secure a table. To lessen the wait time, it is advisable that one arrives either before the doors open at noon or after 230pm for a late lunch. Even so, my companions and I who arrived at 230pm found a queue outside the restaurant but were lucky to get seats within 15 minutes. The first dish that we sampled was the famed L'oeufs Mayonnaise (5EUR), one of Bourdain's favourite dishes at Le Comptoir. While I found the tangy mayonnaise sauce highly appetising, my friends did not concur.
The next starter of Foie Gras Pate (16EUR) was more highly received by the table. The creamy richness of the pate went well with crispy bread provided but like all other foie gras dishes, the richness gets to you after awhile and I believe that this artery-choking plate makes a good sharing rather than individual dish.
The dozen escargots were also fresh and had my dining companion wiping out the herb sauce.

Onto my favourite appetizer of the day: the Bisque de Homard. The large bowl of creamy lobster soup was filled with the essence of the shellfish and though I can't remember the exact price, for about (10-15EUR) at a bistro helmed by a celebrity chef, this was more than I bargained for.
For mains, I ordered a portion of Braised Lamb Shank with Couscous (20EUR). This was a little of a disappointment as it tasted rather ordinary.
My friend had a much more satisfactory Brandade de Morue Gratinee Salade (18EUR), a cod brandade which was both creamy and seasoned perfectly enough to entice you to return for more.
This must be the most-ordered dish at Le Comptoir: Calamar farci de légumes Provençaux, sauce a l'encre (EUR15). The medley of colours from the Provençal vegetables and orzo coupled with the squid ink sauce made this a winning dish and many in the restaurant were spotted mopping up the remaining sauce with slices of bread.
