Genuinely shocked this place doesn't only have 5 star reviews. My partner and I were lucky enough to drop in for Saturday dinner during our one night trip to Seattle, and honestly couldn't have imagined finding a better spot. Really cute, authentic French wine bar with an amazing selection of wines and small plates, all at bizarrely good prices (we were visiting from the SF Bay area and felt like we must've misread the menu). My partner and I asked for suggestions on the wine to start with - I ended up going with something our wonderful server recommended when I mentioned I tend to like cab franc and pinots, and her recommendation was so on point. Such a delicious, peppery flavor and only $9 - it was an absolute home run. We ended up ordering the charcuterie plate that was more on the pork side to split, that came with a pate with sour cherries, salami and another cured meat that also came with a whipped goat cheese with shallots and herbs + 2 cheeses we added on for extra, as well as the beef tartare. The charcuterie platter was huge, and we likely could've stopped there (although I'm happy we didn't). The pate was amazing and the sour cherries it came with were so delicious I ended up asking for extra. The cured meats were also perfect, so thinly sliced and literally made me feel like I was in the Loire Valley. The 2 cheeses we got were good, but not needed as the whipped goat cheese was stellar. The shallots and herbs added so much extra flavor, and it was so creamy. To be honest, we were fairly full after this was continued on to have the beef tartare, although our server (again wonderful!!!), offered to take it off or cancel if we didn't think we needed anything else. We made our way through 2 other wine recs and the beef tartare, which was also wonderful. Lots of capers and dijon and exactly the way you'd expect it to be for the perfect bite. They ended up bringing us a sample of dessert wine to try for free as well, as they asked us to change tables during our meal to accommodate a bigger party. We were happy to drink the wine, but also didn't have an issue moving our seats as they basically just moved everything over for us, but again just emphasizes how thoughtful the staff was overall. If I lived in Seattle, I would literally come here every weekend and I'm sad to have to wait for our next trip to go back. read more

Wow wow wow. This place is sooo nice and lovely on a sunny day- must sit outside. I don't love sitting so close to someone/ next to your friend but we had a great time and the boards are great. Rose was delicious and the staff was very nice checking in on us on a regular basis. I will def be back many times during this summer. Go check it out. Liver wasn't my fav though, guess I'm not that fancy. read more

I'm a winemaker and grower in St. Helena in Napa valley, and I'm also a Certified Sommelier through the Court of Master Sommeliers. My wine has also been sold here in Seattle at two wine bars. In addition, I'm also a Purser with Delta Airlines and my normal route is Seattle-Paris every week. So, I received a couple of recommendations to visit Le Caviste and did so last night for my first and last time. It is true that this is a very cozy establishment that exudes the feeling of being in an authentic French wine bar. But, the level of service is lacking. Not from the regular staff, but the owner himself. Upon entering, I was greeted by a server and I went to the bar and dsat down and was still taking off my coat when the owner came up and gruffly asked, "What are you having?". I told him, "Let me take my coat off and give me a minute to look at the menu. He went away and I browsed the menu which was on chalkboards on the walls. A nice touch, and what appeared to be a really nice selection of wines by the glass and/or bottle. A coworker was joining me and texted me that he was hungry. The owner came up and saw I had finished my delicious glass of Sancerre and asked me if I wanted another. I asked him what vegan options were available and he laughed and said, "None, this is a French restaurant!" I told him "French restaurants serve vegans and vegetarians, don't you have any vegetables you can cook?" He told me, "You can order the olives". I told him I'll take an order of olives but asked him for a bread basket, and he said "Yes..you can have bread but I only have butter....no olive oil." Bewildered, I asked, What kind of French restaurant doesn't have olive oil?" and he said, Maybe the ones in the South". My friend and I enjoyed the wine and the olives were deliciouslly briney and the slices of baguette and country style French bread was truly the closest to actual French bread that I've ever had in the USA. My friend noted the online menu showed pics of steak tartare being boasted as their specialty, and I zeroed in on the pic of the grilled asparagus but neither item was on their actual menu. The owner came by a while later and started to argue about something with me and I asked him, "Have you ever actually been to France?" and he replied, "I go at least once a month" and to that, my coworker laughed and said, "Chris flys to Paris every week!" The food menu at Le Caviste wasn't only bar food but real entrees as well. So that indicated to me, a chef in the kitchen and any good chef (especially one who's cooking French food!!) worth his salt can easily grill up or sauté vegetables in some olive oil and herbs. If you are looking for a friendly wine bar that will tell you about the wine you are drinking then this is not your place. The wine was reasonably priced, the food was good but the two men working (not sure if they were the owners) were downright rude. When asked about vegetarian options the reply was we don't have any if you are a true vegetarian...but they had cheese, and olives and bread. This is such a cute, small wine bar that's easy to miss if you're not looking for it. They offer seating both inside and outside. Having not much knowledge about wine, I asked for a recommendation. I also asked for a charcuterie pairing with the wine. Our server was very knowledgeable and gave us a wonderful pairing of both red and white wine with the cheese and meat board. The spread included a demi picandine (goat cheese) that was limited quantity for that night along with Serrano ham, pickles, butter, bread, and another cured meat that I can't remember the name of. The value of both the drinks and the food was also phenomenal for the quality and quantity. The total for 3 wines and food was only $55 (not including tax & tip). The only reason this place is not 5 stars is because there unfortunately were several fruit flies that kept flying and landing on both the food and in my wine glass throughout our time there. One or two is okay in my books but it became a bit of a nuisance to keep swatting at the food and wine to keep the bugs away. I would love to come back and try their other wines though. Absolutely loved this wine bar! Quiet, quaint and classy, it was the perfect stop for an after work pick-me-up. The bar opens at 4PM and we were the first customers of the day. The staff was super friendly - as a wine noob, she had some great suggestions amongst the red wines! We also ended up going with a cheese and charcuterie plate - the charcuterie was delish. :) Le Caviste is a wonderful downtown find and even though I don't know too much about wine, I felt comfortable asking for suggestions and didn't feel too out of place. The ambiance of the wine bar is perfect! I feel a bit hesitant writing a review on this place, only because I want to keep this as a well-kept secret to myself. ;) read more

Great little spot. The wine selection is excellent with an exceptional number available in glasses, allowing you to try and explore many options. The planche du Beaujolais is wonderful, quality meats all around and wonderful bread (it could be improved by using Maille brand cornichons in my opinion, however). I'm always looking for charcuterie plates! This place has a rotating menu of items and an enormous wine list. I'm not a wine connoisseur myself but we had an excellent server who was very knowledgeable recommend to us the wines as well as dishes. Located in downtown so it's all street parking. Nice space inside as well as outside for side walk seating. One thing that was really delicious was actually the butter! I couldn't stop eating that. Steak tartare was also very delicious. I asked my coworker where my best friend and I should go for a cozy/comfy dinner, he nailed it and also invited himself along - the more the merrier. We ordered a small array of everything and seriously enjoyed every bit of it. The tartar is insane, like really. I've worked at many places that have tartar... this one though. So good. Also, the papillote was something I really wanted to try and it did not disappoint. The gals that helped us were so kind and answered any and all of our questions but also gave us space to chat and converse. One awesome wine bar located within feets from our hotel (Hotel Max)!!! This place is a gem. The wine bar is small and dimly light. There is not much seating available so it can get packed very quickly. We ordered the charcuterie board, Planche du Beaujolais which is a plate filled hard salami, housemate pork pate with red-wine cherries, beurre Breton, cornichones and fluffy goat cheese. You can also add additional cheeses to the plate per ounce. We ordered an additional cheese but can't recall the name. When in doubt ask your server to provide recommendations. Our server I think was the owner. He was very sweet and took the time to explain to us where the cheeses are from and what would go well with our red wine bottle. We had such a fun night out here. The ambience is great, the food was great. Come here after a light dinner. The salami and chevre is everything you need for the perfect snack dinner. read more

I stumbled across this place as I was walking by and noticed the people eating nice cheese spreads outside. I wish there were a place like Le Caviste on every street. It was full outside, so I grabbed a table inside. Rather than picking something off of their chalk menus on the wall I asked the server for a suggestion. He brought a Bordeaux that was outstanding--I had a couple of glasses. One of my favorite meals is bread and cheese. They had a selection of six possible cheeses--I chose one ounce of five of them. The cheese selections they had were excellent--just what I was looking for. They were also a good mix of hard and soft cheese. The blue cheese in particularly was incredible and matched the wine absolutely perfectly. The bread was nice also--and glad that they had plenty of it. Le Caviste makes you feel like you are in a cafe in Paris. It is the type of place I cannot wait to get back to try more of the wine list and see what other cheese they will offer in the future. read more

Why did I not come here sooner? I had this bookmarked in Yelp over a year ago but finally made my there this evening. I love French wines. Have for over 25 years and learned about them when the wine snobs in CA were too stupid to recognize how brilliant they are. The owner here is passionate about French wines so this is a great place to learn a bit about them. They have a nice range by the glass for very reasonable prices. No matter what your style preference is, they have something to suit. They have a great cheese offering along with charcuterie boards and some fish selections. All are fabulous. Their bread is amazing. I had a few cheese selections and the price was very reasonable. There was a triple cream with truffles that was flippin' amazing. They sell the wines they pour by the bottle and the prices are very fair. I will put this spot on my Top 10 list for Seattle. Can't wait to go back! read more

Quite quite good. This place serves WINE, folks, not other kinds of drinks. They do have one beer, and they venture into sherries, but it's a WINE bar. The wine selection is very good, and the sommaliers are knowledgeable and helpful, making you feel like you're in control. I had a very, very good Chinon, and the wait staff kept an eye on my glass so that when I was done with my first glass they were ready with a refill. They also have a few entrees and sides, including bread and cheese, and they have desserts. The ding (should be a half-star) is that the menu is available only as items on a chalkboard, written creatively in a beautiful and extravagant cursive, but I could not read any of the items from my table and had to walk up to the board and read it, to the annoyance of other restaurant guests whose tables were under the chalkboard. I imagine with a changing set of offerings each night a chalkboard is a good way to keep the list up-to-date, but it was a difficulty for me. But -- prices are reasonable, the wine is good, the staff is great, and you'll enjoy yourself. read more

Overall a decent place but I was expecting so much more. The glasses were very cheap and small which I did not expect considering the price and reviews. They are extremely strict with masks and vaccination cards if that's something that is a deterrent for you. Lastly the menu was in cursive and in French so ordering was very challenging.
