So this is a very delayed review. Due to the holidays and life getting in the way but I wanted to make sure I write this because I had such a great experience here that I'm still thinking about it. My partner and I are just in the beginning stages of wine education and we absolutely loved this place. The selection of reds are amazing and yes the cursive on the chalk board is hard to focus on at a distance but you just have to read. Not too hard. Laura was an amazing guide and I could not get enough of her, she took really good care of us. She was knowledgeable, effervescent, with just a touch of sassiness; which my partner and I live for!!!! She really made our night. Some friends and I came here for a happy hour/early dinner on a Thursday evening. It was quite busy already perhaps due to it being a really nice day out, so almost every table was taken. They have a lot of outside seating which is great when it's warm out. The service is super helpful and has a rather French attitude. For example we asked for some sharing plates and the waiter said no. We thought he was joking but apparently he was not All the food is served with bread and you eat it picnic style. The food was delicious! We got some of the specials including the cheese of the day which was super creamy and tasty, the beef tartare, crab rillets, and the duck confit. We also got a whole basket of bread to eat everything with. We all enjoyed a couple glasses of wine, with recommendations from the waitresses. I had an organic Riesling that was delicious. Le Caviste is one if my favorite wine bars in the country, let alone Seattle. Its an awesome place for a small group of friends or coworkers or even a solo dining experience, which I find myself doing often when traveling on business. Their hours are very generous for most places in the area, and you know you can always get a good meal and great service. Their staff are incredibly kind, knowledgable, and helpful. They will spend as much time as you need helping pick out a wine or describing the menu items and are happy to make recommendations. The wine list is quite expertly curated and has a nice selection of glasses and bottles very reasonably priced. They also have some great happy hour bottle deals. The food menu is small but in a good way. Their dishes are very thoughtful and well executed. There's plenty of unique items including my favorite, the smoked scallops. The beef tartare, smoked duck, and cheeses are also superb. I'll keep coming to Le Caviste as long as they keep offering the same wine, food, and friendly service that I have come to rely on when stopping in for an intimate dining experience. read more

Dining here was a strange experience. The food and wine were actually very good--no complaints there! But the service was really odd, and the owner seems to have made some very bizarre choices. Over and over again, our waiter kept emphasizing that they do things at Le Caviste like they do in French bistros. But it simply isn't true. We were told that's why they don't have sparkling water. But I've never, ever gone to a French bistro that doesn't have sparkling water. We were told we couldn't have share plates, but again, I've never, ever gone to a French bistro that doesn't offer share plates for things like salads and entrées (vs finger foods). The waiter said the dishes are made for sharing, but asking the entire table to dig out of the same bowl for casserole-type veggies is insane. I go to France all the time, and I've never experienced anything like that. Again, it's a shame, because the food and wine were good. But the weird, untrue proclamations about how they do things in France were off-putting and made for a funny but slightly unpleasant dining experience. read more

The wine selection is fine, no complaints there but asking clarifying questions about their varieties or food offerings is met with passive aggressiveness and a complex, as if you should already know the answer. For example, the food menu is written on a chalkboard in shaky cursive, completely in french. When I asked our server for a physical copy of the menu or one with accompanying translation I was told to "take a picture". When further asking for a description of each dish, it was very vague and inpatient. As someone with food allergies, I ended up not being able to confidently eat there. I started with the chèvre salad which was a lovely mix of endive, radicchio, some other greens I'm sure and herbs (loved the tarragon) tossed in a vinaigrette topped with a melty goat cheese disk topped crostini. Then came the poisson en papillote, a white fish sat atop thinly sliced potatoes topped with rounds of lemon and a delectable green herb sauce. Yes, I asked for salt, but I like a last minute sprinkle of salt on nearly everything I eat and I do like salt more than most. Even better upon my salt request they brought out a little dish of what appeared to be maldon salt which was just perfect. I finished the meal with an espresso with whole milk, an absolute steal at just a few bucks and to make it feel even more like robbery they brought me an almond and lemon/orange peel madeleine to go with my coffee complements of the staff. That means cheese in French for the uninitiated reading this. Glorious Cheese. Not that string crap and cheddar most of you are used to. And in hindsight Cheese can be considered a desert. It's a wine bar. A FRENCH wine bar. So you can't go wrong. Even a Vegan can have a glass because something from Alsace is usually on the list. There are some walnuts over by their retail section so a vegan can fill up on those as they watch everyone else enjoy life. There is a salad. You would have to avoid the dressing. But I don't think the greens and radish are from a vegan farm so just tough it out varmint. Now the help. Interesting mix of Intentional awkwardness but they know what they're doing. All very seasoned service types. This is not a place for amateurs. There's a mature lady. Half friendly half soup Nazi. Her name I think was Harriet. Questionable smile but knowledgeable. Semi-quick to help. Knowledgeable as I said before but slow to process her answers. There's two how do I say... Hairless gents. Tall, cranky but clearly the two knuckle draggers in charge. Both know it all and they like to tell you that. The elder of the two is like the uncle you love but hates people and sometimes you. I think he's the owner of the place and the minions running about the joint. A bit of snarl if you will but that's good because it's a French wine bar and he has unique staff. Oh. There's more. There's a guy that's super good. Pete? Not sure. It's been a while. Quick with his answers but you can see the stress. He wears his pants high like there's a puddle nearby. He's the most entertaining and knows his job. There are other ladies there. Two are dark haired and really friendly. No clue what their names are. They could be sisters. Or a couple. They balance the place out nicely. But I noticed they tend to pour the wrong wine. I have witnessed it happening to a couple of people. It was funny. There's a young kid there. She might be related to that Harriet lady. She avoids chit chat, not too personable unlike the other two and practically drops your plate and runs away. But she knows her menu when you can get her to speak about it. There's one more there (Maddy?) but she doesn't talk much either. Cleans her glasses, takes your order and sighs a lot. [[HIGHLIGHT]]This place has its quirks and personalities that make it a great experience. The food and wine are the reason you're there so relax, indulge and be amused because they're not like us. They have shit to do. I took my wife, a wine snob in training, here on her birthday and she loved it. It's in a rather small and unassuming location, but with a nice east coast vibe and super nice and knowledgeable employees; don't be afraid to ask questions about things on the menu if you're uncultured swine like us that can't understand basic French. We ordered some delicious brouilly and an amazing charcuterie board. Every part of the board was great, my favorites were the butter and the pate. My only regret with this visit was that we got full too early, there are so many more wines and food items we want to try! The wine and cheese here were fantastic! We both had a different glass of white wine and the server was able to give us a great recommendation for a cheese too. It did feel perhaps a little pricey with some of the wines, but the board has the prices by glass and bottle for reference. It did not have food prices though. Pretty solid wine bar in the heart of South Lake Union! We walked in as a party of 2 on a Thursday and it was quite busy around 7pm, and we had to wait about 20 min for a table. However, anyone can just walk in and immediately get wine; if you want food, then you will need a table. My friend and I got red (bourgogne rogue eric vairet) and white (bourgogne blanc maison chanzy) wine to try, and shared a bunch of food: Margret du canard fume - smoked duck breast. Thinly sliced and pairs well with the bread. Planche du beaujolais - charcuterie board that is pork based. Even the small one ($20) has a lot of food for 2 people, but this is one of the essential items to get pair with the wine. I specifically liked the creme to add to the toast. I wasn't too big of a fan of the pate but the jam on top made it quite good. Steak tartare - this is amazing. You can taste the fresh raw meat flavor. It is off-menu and considered a "special" but this seems to be widely popular so most people order this. I overheard this dish runs out early on in the night, around 7:30pm or so, as that was when the waitress apologized about just running out of steak tartare, to the table next to us. Service is overall good as they check up on you and they refill water jugs and even the water cups periodically. The slight downside is service can be slow, so plan plenty of time to dine here - it was slow enough we had to get up to pay at the front after 10 minutes of waiting for someone to pick up the check. We spent close to 2 hours here, and we didn't really take our time. read more
