This was a highlight of our trip to Hilo. The chocolate is amazing. We ended up getting 10 bars of chocolate. We really enjoyed the tour. Our guide was awesome. So knowledgeable and really let us be hands on. You have to try the raw cacao bean with its sweet fruit.

We loved our time at the farm. Courtney was a knowledgeable and friendly guide. The views were just stunning. Very glad we booked this tour.

Our Farm Tour exceeded expectations! How we wish every tour guide in the world were like Jess -- soo friendly & upbeat, rattles off facts as if from a script but never batting an eye. We arrived 5min late to our 3:15pm tour and felt super apologetic to the other 5 guests for having to wait, but Jess didn't make us feel bad at all. We loved learning about the relatively young farm and about cacao as a plant. Jess cut open a pod for us to teach taste the beans. I found the beans bitter but the pulp so delicious -- that I then ate through a whole half-pod on my own! Then we went over the whole chocolate production process, which was very cool. And the samples -- nothing to say except absolutely delicious! Especially the liquid 70% -- wish I could take that home! Of course we ended up buying quite a bit from the gift shop, but gotta support that local business, right?!

Awesome!! Yes it's a drive up the mountain, yes it's a little off the beaten path but extremely worth every second and mile driven. The tour was the best tour on the big island of Hawaii. Our tour guide was so friendly, informative and entertaining. Jess was our guide and I will do it again the next time we are in Hawaii. Jess made the tour and was so interactive and knowledgeable. Fun and extremely good chocolate. Forever a fan of Lavaloha! It's a must do and must tour when you visit the big island. Must go back and we will. The souvenir shop is so much fun as well. If I could I would have bought 3 of everything. They do ship and that may break me. You have to try the 70% dark chocolate with sea salt, wow! I was not a dark chocolate fan but their dark chocolate I am.

Such a GREAT tour Absolutely FANTASTIC!! We were a party of 6 ranging in age from 18-68. Loved it. Lacy was so kind and informative. We were fascinated by the tree to product tour. The property is beautiful with an amazing view of Hilo. The temps are a little cooler, so the porch is a perfect spot. Highly recommend for all ages. I would go again. Oh - the chocolate is DELICIOUS too.

Chocolate farm where the chocolate is grown and processed there. Most surprising thing for me is to try cacao nectar juice with hint of lychee and lime together. Very refreshing and yummy.

Came from Kona side to do the tour. Well worth 1 hr 45 minutes excursion to see countryside and dramatic change in climate-Hilo gets the most rain in US! Great tour includes eating the cocoa fruit strait from tree, eating the naturally dried cocoa bean, to tasting several dark, white and milk chocolate. The tour of the chocolate farm was very interesting and enjoyable. It was cool to learn about how they grow and make their chocolates. And you even get to sample some of their chocolates. I would recommend this tour to anyone. Also, the view overlooking the farm, Hilo and the Pacific Ocean is incredible.

My family and I took this tour and had a great time. The tour guide was friendly and seemed to enjoy teaching you about where chocolate comes from. We enjoyed eating from the cacao and found it interesting how floral it tasted. The property is beautiful. This has been an amazing experience. Didn't even know we had this amazing chocolate farm here on our island. Learning about the different trees and how they make chocolate. And WOW. Lavaloha is a must do whether you're on the Kona or Hilo side! A Big Island Staple! Staying on the Kona side, we did a day trip to Hilo and would've regretted not going on this tour as it was so informative, adventurous, and just overall, genuine fun (for the entire family)! A MUST DO! read more

Awesome service! We wanted to go on a tour but found out they were booked:(. Because of COVID, they had private tour bookings so make sure to book 3-7 days before. Staff there are so friendly. KO went out of his way to explain the harvesting and processing of the cacao plant as well as all the other types of plants they grow on the farm. He even adopted a baby wild pig which is now part of the family. They even gave out free plants and my sister bought a milkweed plant that had THREE caterpillars on them! Definitely recommend!!! read more

What a fabulous tour! We had such a great tour guide- very knowledgeable. We were put in an 8 seater golf like cart and we're driven all around the farm. I learned soooo much about chocolate! I highly recommend this tour! All handicapped will do great on this tour. read more

My husband and I took a trip to Hilo and went on this tour. We were not disappointed. We did not know what to expect but we were pleasantly surprised. Our guide Jeremy had so much passion for this beautiful farm and the chocolate. He is smart as well as fun and oozes aloha. He is a true local and knows his stuff! The grounds are gorgeous and the views are spectacular. Learning about the cacao plant and tasting the chocolate in such a beautiful place made it an exceptionally fun day. They have big plans for this property and I'm so happy to be in at the beginning of what will be an even greater cacao farm and so much more! Jeremy was energetic talking about its potential and I can't wait to see how it evolves. Melissa in the gift shop was wonderful too. She was very sweet and fun to hang out with. They have guidelines to keep guests safe from Covid so we felt comfortable knowing we were safe. We ate the most delicious chocolate on the way home and we look forward to a return visit. read more

We went on a tour here, and the tour guide (I forgot her name...) gave a great tour of the farm and the entire chocolate making process. We were introduced to their Cacao farm, and she cracked open a fresh Cacao fruit during the tour and let us try the fresh fruit directly. We were later taken to where the cacaos are fermented, and we got to try some fresh Cacao nibs too. Last but not least, we got a sample for most of their chocolates, and I have to say their dark chocolates are one of the best ones I've ever had! Their milk chocolate with vanilla was excellent as well! Highly recommend everyone to go on this tour! read more

We were visiting from Massachusetts and both my husband and I had the best tour we have ever had in our lives.What an amazing Establishment/Operation We were greeted by Phil who was charismatic and welcoming. Then had a little stroll in their garden and got to feed the Resident ducks Huey and Guey (perhaps the name was Louie) As we gathered with another family on the Golf cart we were introduced to a Remarkable Bright Tour guide named PJ. He absolutely facilitated an informative and interactive 10 star tour. Not only does PJ have exceptional Guest Relation and Hospitality skills, he was well versed and knowledgeable to the Production aspects of Agriculture. It's rare to find a Human that can be so versatile in this Industry .This personable, polished young man made out experience. After touring the beautiful Orchard, asking numerous questions, we sampled several decadent chocolate variations that were made on sight. We were bid farewell by PJ after attempting to recruit him to come work for us if he ever was to pursue on a career on the East coast. We manage an Apple Orchard in the Berkshires. If visiting the Big Island, visit this Unique Orchard for a Memory that will last a lifetime. We learned so much about Chocolate and the Hawaii read more

We had a great 1.5-hour tour, and since they're a small business who are steadily (and savvily) building their brand awareness, we were the only two people on the tour! It was awesome. Our guide took us through the farm on a golf cart and occasionally also by foot, showing us the all-natural, pesticide-free cacao growth process step by step. We got to sample the cacao fruit, cocoa nibs, cacao liqueur, and all of their chocolate products, while also seeing their beautiful property (complete with natural rivers, waterfalls, wild boar, and plant nurseries). It sounds like the main investors in Lavaloha are both humble and involved in making their farm a great place to visit for future generations, allocating funds to projects like creating waterfall access (with emphasis on ecosystem conservation) and other exciting goals that will keep this place accessible to the public, so that everyone can enjoy the place and its products even more for years to come. The staff was very pleasant, friendly, and knowledgeable. We hope to return someday to see how everything has expanded! read more

When we travel, we love to have fun while learning, and so visiting this cocoa farm hit the mark. Jess was our tour guide and you cannot find a more entertaining, talented, knowledgeable tour guide. We rode in a top-notch golf cart that seated approximately 10 people thru the farm. We learned a lot about how to grow cocoa and even tasted the cocoa seeds and pulp. It tasted better than I ever imagined. Then to the roasting area for the beans and it smelled like brownies were baking. We were able to taste a variety of chocolate from dark to white. It reminded me of the how we tasted bourbon in Kentucky! The landscape was so incredibly beautiful; it looked out of Hilo and the ocean. It was breathtaking. Thank you Jess! Even though you want to work in the kitchen, you met your calling as a tour guide. Your enthusiasm for the chocolate also makes you a fantastic ambassador for Lavaloha. read more

Best worth for the buck kind of chocolate / cacao farm tour here on the Big Island. $40 per adult (13+) and $10 for children (aged 3-12). Totally easy to book even at the last minute, which we found to be super difficult everywhere else on the Big Island (we usually like to go with the flow vs. plan ahead). This was also perfect for our family as my husband is an information seeker while we all love the taste and flavor of chocolate. This tour gave us the full breakdown of how chocolate is made from the farms trees to actual bars sold on the retail shelves. The tastings were amazing as well! We wish there were larger sample sizes, but all in all, this was one of the best experiences we had while on the Big Island in Hilo if traveling with small kids and wanting to tackle the drive to this side of the island. What was significantly awesome for our young kids was not only the chocolate, but also Carol's Garden, a part of the farm next to the parking lot and across the way from the gift shop entrance, where we were able to venture to with no time pressure and allow the kids to feed the ducks. We found this place because Facebook stalked us, lol. I'm so glad we did!!! It was an hour and a half drive from our hotel in Waikoloa Village but worth the trip. We were early for our tour yet we were immediately met and shown around the welcome center. They allowed us to tour tour their botanical garden whilst we waited. Let me tell you... such a beautiful spot. I loved the foliage and the water. A lovely spot out of a lava tube. Well done!! Now, onto the tour. Our guide was Lexie. Let me tell you she was knowledgeable, energetic and hilarious. We learned so much about how chocolate is made. She was an outstanding tour guide. We were driven in a "bus" style golf cart. So comfy! Has sides to protect from rain as needed, she was prepared with umbrellas and towels if needed. We saw the trees, learned about how they grow, how they are harvested, fermented, dried and then prepared. Woah! I learned so much!! The chocolate samples were given in the chocolate lounge. It was so bougie!! the samples were yummy. The staff in the store was friendly. The lanai has a beautiful view. I recommend a visit to this farm. It is worth the trip. read more

We took the tour with Leigh with our 2 and 4 year olds. There was one other group in our tour. It was fantastic. I've been to two chocolate factories before, but still learned a ton. The tour was relaxing, with many samples. This is the perfect tour if you have kids who won't sit still on a golf cart for long. It was flexible enough to let the kids stretch their legs when they get restless. read more

Lavaloha was closed however one of the partners Curtis who farms coffee gave us a personal grout and shared so much about the process and the island. We purchased freshly roasted coffee. This was by far one the best experience my family had had. Next time hopefully we will enjoy some fresh chocolate and coffee read more

I was looking forward to visiting the Lavaloha Chocolate Farm, but the tour was a real blast and it far exceeded my expectations. Plentiful samples greet you before the tour. My favorite was the milk chocolate sea salt. Guides were funny, friendly and super informative. I got the impression they genuinely love what they are doing on the farm. I could have given this 5 stars based on our Tour Guide.... but I knock it down as it was kinda expensive. I received an AD on Facebook about the tour but it didn't mention a price. Once I got there and they told me how much it was to take the tour, I paid but mentioned they could have had the cost on the AD.... I was told, "you could have gone to our website and saw the price" for that kind of Comment that cost a star... They do give you samples (small pieces) of their chocolate. I really liked the Salted Chocolate so I purchased some, but it came with only a few bites for $14. Other than the guy who mentioned about should have looked online for the prices, the rest of the staff were friendly and courteous. read more

Just a 5 minute or so drive up through the farm lands is the tour. Very nice greeting and tour guide. Very organized and clean. Take the walking tour as it's very educational on all the aspects of the tree. This farm is more than coffee and cocoa trees. read more

This has been the top tour that we have done on our trip. First the folks working here are very welcoming. PJ lead us on our tour and let me tell you he was so friendly and knowledgeable. A very short drive out of Hilo, but still significantly off the beaten path. The tour was a little pricey, but we'll developed and fun to do. Chocolate was outstanding. Nice to see a very small business doing it all from the tree to package. Worth a visit. read more

I had no idea delicious chocolate had such a process of becoming delicious. Phil, our tour guide, was entertaining and informative. Phil was very knowledgeable about the whole delicious chocolate process. The farm was in a beautiful location on the hill. We went as a family group of 11, all ages from 3-68. We are growers and makers of single origin, 100% Hawai'i grown chocolate. Our 1,000 acre cacao farm is set high on the slopes of Mauna Kea, just outside of Hilo, where the rich volcanic soil adds depth and flavor to our cocoa beans. We invite you to take the scenic drive up to our Visitor Center where you'll be welcomed with sweeping mauka to makai views. Enjoy samples of our handcrafted chocolates at the Visitor Center & Gift Shop! Embark on a Tree-to-Chocolate Tour with our knowledgeable guides where you'll explore our cacao orchards, walk through our chocolate processing facilities, visit the chocolate kitchen and learn about the tree-to-chocolate journey. Entrance to our Visitor Center & Gift Shop is free and open to the public. Our award-winning chocolate is available for sale here, along with locally made gift items. We don't currently offer food for sale, but guests are welcome to bring their own picnic lunches and enjoy them on the scenic porch or the grassy lawn. We have parking and restroom facilities. Tree-to-Chocolate tours are available several times daily. Please book online or call for availability. Tours are 60-90 minutes. We would love to have you visit our chocolate farm!

History

Established in 2012.

In 2012, we began our dream to make chocolate in Hilo, Hawaii. We planted cacao trees and watched them grow. We harvested their pods and learned to ferment, dry and roast. In 2017, we began making chocolate. We perfected the ratios of ingredients for each secret recipe and fell in love with the art and science of being a chocolatier. In 2018, we opened a Visitor Center and began offering tours, because we believe that our 1,000 acre farm and our handcrafted, single origin 100% Hawaiian chocolate is worth sharing with the world.

On the right side of the store is a gift shop, while the left side has a bunch of seating for patrons. I noticed there were a few people here with their laptops out, so I can only assume it's also a good place to work as well. The store seemed pretty quiet, street parking outside was easy, and the staff I interacted with here was friendly. Puna Chocolate Company is a good rest spot to stop by to escape from the busyness of Downtown Hilo.

We arrived 15 minutes before opening and were first in the walk-in line. Right before opening, an employee came out and split the lines into "walk-in" and "phone order." Totally fine--except once they opened, they let all phone orders go first... and then continued calling more phone orders again while the walk-in line just stood there. Despite being first in the walk-in line, we waited over 45 minutes before they even started letting walk-ins inside. Meanwhile, we watched people leave the walk-in line, place phone orders, and get served ahead of us. The system is extremely frustrating and poorly managed. A better system would be alternating one customer from each line ! So ridiculous they can't figure this out . Once inside, it took another 20 minutes to get our order. To make matters worse, the order was incorrect and nothing was labeled, so we had no idea what we were eating. The mochi itself was also disappointing. The texture was unusually thick and had a strange, almost metallic taste. The strawberry was very sour, and the strawberry cake mochi was overly large, soggy, and honestly inedible. Overall, we wasted over an hour and a half here for a very underwhelming experience. The staff also weren't particularly welcoming or helpful. The two stars are for Hawaii's aloha spirit....otherwise, this would be a zero!

Highly recommend this experience! I have done this tour twice, a year apart, and I would do it again just because it is so worth it! It's the kind of thing where you learn something new each time and it just gets more interesting. Plus, you can't turn down chocolate samples. First off, the view upon arrival at Lavaloha is breathtaking. A must-see in person as it is this panoramic view overlooking the ocean above Hilo town. Then, you get to ride on the 10 seater golf cart. Jess was our tour guide and she was very welcoming and knowledgeable about Lavaloha's history and farming processes. The tour is interactive so we stopped off in the middle of the cacao trees and got to touch and taste the cacao beans. I can now say that I have eaten raw cacao, and I learned that it is highly nutritious. Next, we got to go inside the roasting room and feel the temperatures that the cacao beans go through. Shortly after, we sat in a room to cool down and watch an educational video while tasting the fruits of the labor. From the cocoa liquor, to dark and milk chocolates with the addition of sea salt, vanilla, Hawaiian coffee, and even orange. The unique notes of each was an amazing experience for my tastebuds. You are not allowed to enter the kitchen, which I am grateful for because it is clear that they take sanitation and quality control very seriously. Then, back at the gift shop we were able to shop all of their products including chocolate body butters and candles, and coffee by Hilo Coffee Company. Their check out is also up-to-date and offers tap-to-pay. They even offer discounts for residents, military, and other. Jess was also open to any questions that we had and made great conversations. Lastly, a special thanks to Lavaloha for caring about the community and being dedicated to education and sharing the beauty of their farm with everyone. They were so gracious to accommodate our university class and provide us a great learning opportunity by showcasing what it means to be sustainable in agritourism. The tour was amazing and I wish we could go again! As a sustainable tourism class at UH Hilo, we had the opportunity to tour all around the chocolate farm for free and it shows how much Lavaloha values education by waving the initial fee of $43 per person. We also got to try the cacao fruit which I thought was very tasty itself and it reminded me of the fruit mango stin but it was just a little bitter. We also got to rub the fermented cacao fruit and it smelled so good. I heard it was something new that they did and I'm glad our tour guide included it because it makes us, as the visitors, more engaged with the tour. When we got to sit and learn about the production, our tour guide explained everything in a great pace. I was so impressed on how she could explain everything into detail matching the video on the tv in such a great flow. I left that place knowing exactly the process of how chocolate is made. We also rode up in these solar powered rides up to the giftshop and I love how they use it because it shows how much they value sustainability. We finished it off with the giftshop where I just had to buy the chocolates because they tasted great and to top it off with this scenic view of Hilo from the giftshop. Looking around the gift shop, I love how they include several other local businesses products also around the giftshop and it shows how they support local. Wonderful surprise treat on our trip to Hawaii in early April --We had never heard of LAVALOHA - at Hilo, Hawaii until I saw a pop-up on Yelp as I searched best things to do. It is not on the "best" list, but it should be. Of all our adventures visiting 4 of the Hawaiian Islands, my husband said this was his favorite. It ranked in the top 3 for me, but definitely #1 in friendliness, care of visitors, and love of their enterprise. LAVALOHA is a short drive through lovely farms, only about 10 minutes from Hilo, up to the cacao plantation w/ lots of signs on the right. Fantastic view of Hilo and the ocean from the visitors' center. Which looks like a home, but don't be afraid to enter. You will feel like family or good friends upon entering a wonderful array of chocolate . Ellen and Jennifer (??) greeted us w/ fresh drinking water, showed/ explained the variety of delicious chocolate products, and they were so generous w/ samples. Dereck conducted a great tour of the plantation. *explained all about making chocolate from pods on trees to pips to *delicious products *answered the many questions that we had *showed us other fruits raised and the care and process to market *provided fresh bananas that he picked for us. Such a wonderful, educational, relaxing tour. Well worth the short drive---and very close to the Hawaiian Tropical Gardens, another little advertised beautiful adventure. read more

An unexpected Hilo Gem at about 1200 feet and 10 min up the mountain on a beautiful scenic drive through farm land from downtown Hilo. We loved it! Amazing views of the harbor from their visitors center with telescopes around their lanai to explore. My family, including a 2 yo and 6 mo, took a comfortable and safe ride on their tour cart through a small section of their extensive 100 acre farm. We learned about the Cacau farm while making several fun and interesting stops, taking a walk through their orchard of Cacau trees to a "favorite" tree, opened a Cacau pod, planted a Cacau seed, sampled Cacau nectar, and got to know and see their chocolate pod processing and chocolate making processes, tasting along the way. We really enjoyed the sights and local/extended chocolate history lesson and tour hosted by Jessica and Jeremy. They were Great! Both very thoughtful and especially accommodating of our children. We also saw a waterfall and spent 10-15 min in their butterfly house which was great for our 2 yo (and fun for us too). The small group made the experience very intimate. The staff we encountered were very friendly energetic people doing what they love. We had no shortage of eye widening tasting experiences :). I've visited Lavaloha twice now, and both times were amazing! The farm is beautiful, the staff is super welcoming, and you can really tell how passionate they are about what they do. The tour is definitely worth it, you get to learn about how cacao is grown, see the trees up close, and even try fresh cacao fruit and different chocolate samples. On my second visit, I even got to crush a dried cacao bean in my hands and smell it, which was such a cool experience. One thing I love about Lavaloha is how eco-friendly and community-focused they are. The entire farm is off-grid, they use electric carts for the tours, and they even built their own solar setup to charge them. They've grown a lot since my first visit, and now they're featured on more tourist sites and connecting more with locals. Our tour to Lavaloha farm was quite an amazing experience. The guide Jess was informative and knowledgeable of the company's operations and upbringing. Her positive energy and ability to tailor to the needs of our group made this trip all the more worth it. The farm itself was in a beautiful location and there were crops like fruit trees, coffee, bamboo, and of course the cacao. The chocolate really provided that organic taste that I think many of us wish to encounter more often. They had a special variety of flavors like white chocolate with cacao nibs, sea salt, vanilla, and orange. Each one was unique and delicious in their own ways. Our group's favorite was the sea salt chocolate but I personally found the orange chocolate to be the most intriguing because it had a mild sweetness with a fruity flavor. What a great treasure I found so close to Hilo I'm from Oahu visiting my friends and decided last minute to come up. We called for the 1130am tour and Tiare said to come right up. What a view from up there! Derek gave us the informative tour on the work they are doing. Growing the single crop cacao, harvesting and each step along the way to becoming a delicious morsel was explained to us. Lychee was in season as a bonus. We even went in the butterfly garden on site. I'm inspired to grow some butterfly attracting plants in my yard at home. On top of that was the most adorable little piglet mascot Pumbah. After the tour we sampled their handmade chocolate. They make special gifts to bring home. We spent such a leisure afternoon on the lanai looking at Hilo Bay. We even saw a Hawaiian Hawk I'o soaring. I would recommend visiting Lavaloha Cacao Farm. I believe these people are working there from their heart. I would recommend a visit to Lavaloha Cacao Farm. read more

I recently went to Lavaloha with my University of Hawaii at Hilo class! It was a fantastic experience and our tour guide Jess was one of the best tour guides that day. She gave us good information on how they make their chocolate and even showed us the insides of the cacao and tasted it as well. The walk to see all the cacao plants was enjoyable and the ride back to the gift shop was relaxing! We ended up trying the chocolate that they make at the farm and I have to say it's one of the best chocolates I have ever eaten! My favorite samples so far were the Milk chocolate with vanilla and the sea salt dark chocolate. The gift shop looks amazing and has all of its products in stock like chocolate, coffee, and even merch. Plus they have the best view of Hilo. I would recommend this tour to everyone because not only do they give the best tours and make the best chocolate and coffee they also give back to their communities as well! I went as part of the UH Hilo tour and the tour guide Jess was amazing, very informative, and fun. Tasting the melted chocolate was like drinking warm hot chocolate, they have free samples to try out their chocolate varieties, I liked the orange dark chocolate and the dark chocolate, the weather was breezy and warm, I brought my umbrella to shade from sun and rain and it was perfect. The walk is not too long and riding on the shaded sightseeing bus was very relaxing. The road leading to the farm is paved so you can drive in with your car, and they have a small parking lot right at the gift shop. There are different types of tours of the farm that they offer listed on their website or you can drive in to purchase some delicious chocolate that you can gift to your friends and yourself. I also bought a coffee/chocolate soap which smells like candy and I'm hoping to buy their coffee scented candles next time. I recommend going there. read more

On the weekend, I got the chance to visit Lavaloha. Jess was our tour guide, allowing us to see one of the many different ways they make their chocolate and why they are different from other chocolate factories or farms. She gave us a wonderful tour of new insights and prospects. It was a very informative and exciting experience. She introduced us to the history, industry, and challenges of Lavaloha since it opened. They showed how they used the land while also conserving its natural resources. Overall, it was a very informative tour with lots of exciting things to do. They offered more than one type of tour, including walking or riding on their carts. Some visitors also come from a helicopter ride, and Lavaloha was prepared for any tour. As a college student, they supported my learning by allowing me and my classmates to learn about their farm and story. It was a wonderful experience, and Jess was a great tour guide. read more

Lavaloha offers a great experience for both chocolate lovers and those without a sweet tooth (like me!). Down through the cacao farm and the fermentation room, our guide Jess showcased her incredible knowledge. She seems to know everything, from the specifics of cacao to the unique volcanic soil of Hilo. I truly appreciated her hospitality and the way she supported our curiosity by answering every question with ease. While the tasting samples might seem small, the richness of the chocolate is so intense that they are perfectly satisfying. I'm actually not a fan of American milk chocolate, but this is truly in a different league. It is easily the BEST milk chocolate I've had in the U.S.! The tour was great, Derek was our guide and though it wasn't the first trip for JoAnn and I to Lavaloha's factory store, it was our first tour. JoAnn and I are locals, but my daughter and her boyfriend came in from the mainland to visit and we felt this would be the perfect time for a tour. The Covid restrictions and recommendations were strictly adhered to and they actually made for a more personable experience. The samples they passed out were tasty and the process of taking the pods to chocolate was thoroughly explained. We all came away with a better understanding of what it takes to make really good chocolate. Our recommendation is to come for the product, take the tour and stay a bit on the lanai for the million dollar view of old Hilo Town. read more

Great opportunity for an interactive experience to learn about the farm's cacao to chocolate production. Lacy was joyful and knowledgeable, providing a number of facts, explaining the artistic and sustainable processes of growing cacao, the act of formulating the cacao into their award winning chocolate bars, and facts about the very geography of the farm itself. They have a beautiful production area located in the heart of the farm for lounging and taste testing (this is also where the magic happens). My visit to Lavaloha Chocolate Farm was fantastic! My understanding of the entire process of making chocolate, from the cacao tree to the finished product, has completely changed as a result of the visit. The personnel was amiable, informed, and obviously enthusiastic about their work. Given that the farm was constructed on lava ground, the location is stunning and distinctive. The chocolate tasting was unquestionably the best part; everything was tasty, rich, and fresh. I particularly like the farm's emphasis on sustainability and community service. I went to Lavaloha on a field trip for my college class on sustainable tourism. The tour guide Jess was excellent. She was informative and had a really fun and upbeat personality. The tour itself was very thorough and the view was amazing up in the gift shop, looking down to Hilo bay from the hillside. The chocolate was also really good, and I liked the fact that it was less than ten ingredients, all of which were pronounceable and not overly processed. Overall, I'd recommend this tour to anyone looking to expand their knowledge of chocolate making or coffee making, as well as anyone with a sweet tooth. I got to visit Lavaloha recently and it was amazing. I enjoyed eating the many different types of chocolate from their dark chocolate with sea salt to the white chocolate. Not only was the chocolate great, the tour was also a good experience. You could tell the staff was very passionate in what they do. Our tour guide for the tour was Jessica and she made it very informative and engaging as we got to hold and taste the nuts from the cacao pods. The best part was when we got to experience how they make the chocolate from a video that they prepared. Overall the tour was amazing and I do recommend people to experience this tour. Definitely a 5/5 star review from me! read more
