Food is good, service was meh at best. We came as a party of 9 about an hour after opening and the restaurant was pretty much empty. The server was a very nice blonde gal I forgot her name but we only saw her once throughout our dinner, the food did take a bit of time to come out but it's okay because we were a lot of people. However I did notice that the staff was much more attentive to the other big party that got there after us and were seated next to us ( about 12 people). Disappointed... Picked up 2 sandwiches to go - mine was a "turkey melt". Mediocre at best. When the bread is thicker than the meat inside, it's lacking! Barely found the cheese in this "melt". Sandwich came with fries and pickle slices. It wasn't worth the price. We hope the pie we picked up, too, is better than this sandwich! read more

This place recently got a new owner. I like that they've added a few things to the menu, especially the eggs Benedict. My wife and I were very excited for this addition since that is a hard dish to find around here unless you go to a chain, which we are not fans of. Unfortunately, the eggs bene was over cooked. The service seems to have improved with the new management which is great. I look forward to going back and hoping it was just a mistake on the eggs bene and not a consistent thing. read more

Man, I made a BIG mistake going here. Was heading back from Yosemite to the Bay Area and turned to Yelp to find a stop for lunch. Among the slew of diners that popped up we decided to to Latif's restaurant. Service was INCREDIBLY slow. A diner should be an in and out type of place given the type of food that is served. The time they took felt more like a 3 MIchelin star restaurant. We ended up seating ourselves since no-one seemed to be paying any attention and got our menus as well after waiting for a while. Once we ordered, food took forever to come out and we ended up spending an hour and half instead of 30 mts as we had planned. We should have left earlier but were too hungry and tired. The food was actually pretty decent but we were too pissed at the end of it and wished we had just gone to Jack in the Box that is across the street. Not sure if this was just a off day or the regular experience. If the latter, they need to hire more cooks!! read more

This has to be one of Turlock's oldest diners. You certainly get that feeling when you walk in and see the retro style seating and decor. If this were in the SF Bay area someone would have paid a pretty penny to decorate the place in such a way, but here it's the real thing. The whole place is from another era but for Turlock natives it fits in just as well today as it did when it first opened. Most of the times that I come and visit my parents we have breakfast here. There isn't anything complicated on the menu. It's your standard bacon, eggs, and pancake place but the beauty lies in the simplicity. Your coffee cup is filled when you walk in and is topped off without you having to flag down anybody. It's also a great place to come for a nice quiet breakfast. You aren't going to have a dining area full of rowdy kids jumping over the seats or running around the aisles here. If you stop by then you will surely not be able to resist stepping on the big scale that they have near the entrance. Oh, did I forget to mention their great selection of pies? You might want to grab one on your way out to enjoy later in the afternoon! read more

I love this place. I have the pleasure of being a part of Kiwanis of Greater Turlock. We have breakfast here every Friday morning And Jackie is our server. She is one of the nicest and friendliest servers. The breakfast is delicious and priced right. I highly recommend Latif's and ask for Jackie, she'll treat you right. I can't believe that a place like this still exists! A family-owned retro diner that literally looks like it hasn't changed a thing since the 50's or 60's. I came here for pie with my grandma, mom and aunt, who were customers back in the 60's and they said it is exactly how they remembered it! Cinder block walls, Formica tables, orange and green decor - coming here is like stepping back in time. I can't speak to the regular menu, but I was impressed with the pies. They are made from scratch and apparently quite famous in this area. The lemon meringue was the best I've had. The peach tasted fresh, a slice of summer in February. The cherry was good, too, such a far cry from the gloppy, too-sweet canned filling you would find at, say, a Denny's. I would love to come back here sometime, to eat pie and feel like the past is still alive. read more

As many have mentioned in previous reviews this is a throwback diner that hasn't really been renovated since the 60's or early 70's. Personally I don't mind that and appreciate the nostalgic feel. There is a seat at the counter with a sign on the back says President George Bush sat here, and a picture on the wall to backup the claim. (I actually remember it being in the local news papers at the time as well) The food is average, nothing particularly special about it. The service is at times average, other times I have felt completely ignored by the waitresses. One visit in particular we were told (as usual) to sit where ever we like. We picked a window seat and sat their for over ten minutes without anyone even approaching us, and they weren't busy. The saving grace for this place is its locally famous pies, their reputation is well earned. The lemon meringue is exceptional, and actually tastes as close to my late mother's made from scratch lemon meringue pie as I have ever found. If your looking for a meal, there are plenty of other choices that are far better, if however you are looking for great tasting pie this is your place. My rating would be much lower without their pies. read more

We ordered banana meringue, chocolate meringue, (whole pies to-go), and a single slice of lemon meringue. That meringue is unlike anything I've ever had, it's so sweet and delicate, and toasty...like a toasted marshmallow and a cloud mated and birthed a pie topping. WARNING: Be careful, the pies boxes are heavy, and will slide around inside the car if not secured, leaving you to tearfully scrape the meringue off the inside of the box with a spoon. read more

This is an old fashioned coffee shop and it is great. I started eating at Latif's when I was four years old. At that time, I loved their waffles. Now that I am 61 I prefer their chef salad. Their portions are huge. You can easily split a meal between two people. They still have the "space age" style. It was super modern then but, It is retro now. Everything from the coconut cream pie, to the lemon meringue, to the WONDERFUL strawberry rhubarb pie!! I wish this place was closer but with it being so far away it makes it a true treat!! Been coming here for the better part of forty years. Love the food and the people. Can't leave without a slice of lemon meringue pie! The food is always good. Just sad they are no longer open for dinner. I get it though as we occasionally stop in for dinner, I am more of a breakfast or lunch customer. Service has always been super. It's just an iconic part of old town Turlock! We used the banquet room for lunch after my father's funeral. We reserved it for fifty people and set the menu. We had a little more than fifty show up and Latif's was more than accommodating. Everyone commented on how comfortable they were there and how great the food was. The price was well below what we had planned on, even with the additional people. You just don't see an establishment like this anymore. Very personal feel with a ton of history. Cool Items... 1) George and Barbara Bush ate here! Not Dubya... his Dad. There are two seats with plastic placards on the rear of the seats indicating this fact when he was campaigning for his presidency. Coffee (*** $1.49) Of course, I had to take back a Pie to Lodi! Which one! The Peach, from talking to a customer, is the #1 Pie if you're going by sales here at Latif's. The Pie prices range from $13.95 (Fruit Pies) to $15.95 (Boysenberry), with the ones ending in Berry being the most expensive. I'll take a Boysenberry! Boysenberry Pie (**** $15.95) This is a very expensive Pie! Compared to some supermarket pies, this could be seen as extravagance. But, considering the drive I made... why not go all the way! Sweet, but not overly sweet... unlike some revered Pie-makers in Stockton which elicit a Sugar-Shake every time you bite into a piece. I appreciated that. Although the Pie Crust is not a Lard Crust, which I prefer, the Pie Crust is a very crispy Sugar Crust in it's outer layers. Don't know how Latif's does it... but it works! At about 10am in the morning, most of the customers were "old-timers". In fact, I sat by Carl, a retired Fleet Manager of the local Ford Dealer in Turlock. He pointed out some of the things to see in the downtown of Turlock. Oh Laitif's, what would I do without you? What would Turlock be without you? Best local diner in the history of local diners. Well worth a quick jaunt off the freeway if you're passing through. This sort of place is an endangered species and it's what America now lacks across the country as sprawl sets in and chains dominate. The country charm and simple no-nonsense food and service, not to mention being a central hub for local chatter, makes this place one of my favorites. Eat the tuna melt. A la mode a slice of pie. My family used to eat at this restaurant every saturday for years. The service is soooo slow. And some of the wait staff are too old and unfriendly. On several occasions we have filled up our own water or coffee because they are so slow they can't check on their guests!! We ended up switching to AJ's for saturday morning breakfast. I've been coming to Latif's for about 25 years. Never had a bad meal, was lucky enough to have Mother's Day breakfast there this year. My Hubby and I both had the Banana Bread French Toast Special. MMMMM MMMMMMM it was good. My 3 year old daughter enjoyed the Blueberry Pancake special. My Daddy loves getting the grits. Love their pie's, always a fave! Not impressed by their pies - everyone raves about them...maybe because it's the only thing you can find in Turlock? ahem.... It's cute to see little old couples gathering there for breakfast but their food is absolutely subpar. The woman at the cashier has the crappiest attitude I have ever seen. I was so close to telling her off but I just kept my mouth shut not to make a scene... it's as though they think their food is the best thing on earth - So the Bushes ate there - BIG FREAKIN DEAL!! We walked in with 5 people and as soon as we rolled through that door, all heads turned to us. My thoughts, 'oh dear.......' They sat us in the corner and it took the lady awhile to come by to take our orders, but she is the sweetest thing ever. She first asked if we wanted our checks split. Oh my, true service right there. Someone who doesn't mind doing that because we all know that at chained restaurants, servers hate splitting up the check because its more work for them. The bf and I shared country fried steak & eggs, country style potatoes and english muffin. It was delicious. We also ordered 'omg!! wait for it......' lemon meringue pie. OMG!!! I was in heaven. If I was just judging the pie they would have 5 stars!!! But their service lost 2 stars for them. We went for lunch on a Sunday. We were seated with our menus and 10 mins later our waitress hadn't taken our order. She finally comes and leaves water and doesn't take our order still. She says she'll be right back. So by the time we ordered 20 mins had already gone by. If they were swamped I'd be a little more forgiving but they weren't. They even had extra waitresses just sitting at the bar talking. Food was good. Nothing spectacular but the pie!!! Yummy! I had a slice of bannana cream pie and the crust was light and flaky and cream was so silky. Five stars for their pies...especially their Boysenberry Pie. Ever since we tasted their pies, we have stopped picking some up from the groceries. Latif's serve freshly-baked pies. So be sure to call ahead and ask if the pie you are craving for is available. They also take half-and-half pie orders. But we always take whole pies. Our out-of-town guests love them so much that they ask to order one to bring home. As for the rest of the restaurant, I might have to write up another review when I'm at Latif's besides picking up a pie. read more

Started out we joined family at the last minute creating a party of 8. The hostesses loudly complained that we and another large party should have made reservations. The restaurant was practically empty for a Saturday am. As we waited in the front lobby for a table, a member of our party was hit with water from their leaking roof. I used to go there years ago for breakfast and it was alright, the service was slow and they didn't like the fact that i had 2 children with me. I guess they don't care for kids!! Anyway i don't remember anything special about the place other than it was clean and the waitresses weren't too friendly and the food was acceptable. I went to the fair and everyone i was with wanted pie and ice-cream so we all had a piece. My peach pie was GROSS!!! The filling was basically flavorless besides all the sugar goop and the texture of the peaches reminde me of canned peaches that had been recooked to the point of turning to mush!!! My husbands apple pie was a little less disgusting, a flavorless, sugary canned pie filling. My girlfriends pecan was very good. The crust was the great, but the fruit fillings were terrible. The ice-cream was Foster Farms and was just like it's supposed to taste. If you are known for your pies you should use fresh fruit or at least a high quality manufactured filling.I don't know why everyone is raving about the pies unless that's the only pie they've ever tried. ;/ read more

Worst experience today! Parked in front, had to get our own menus, sat for 15 minutes and never had any one come by, 5 waitresses pasted near by but no one said boo! Still shaking my head.
