Decided to have dessert with the family. We decided on having a slice of pie at Latif's. What a good idea that was. We all enjoyed a delicious slice of pie. Everyone left satisfied. I think that "retro" is the appropriate word for Latif's interior. It is "involving, and related to" things past because it is a throwback to the diner style of that time. It's reminiscent of the Fifties because it's FROM the Fifties. That's why I used it. It would have been just as authentic if it were a "Happy Days" replica of Fifties-style (yes, I'm using the term loosely) coffee shops. Mel's restraunts have a modern feel to them even though they're obviously modeled on cheeky imaginary diners. Things are what they are, updates/copies be damned. It's nice that they let you take tons of photos. But the food is still kinda mediocre. read more

This place is phenomenal! The pies are just like your grandmother made them. Rhubarb is excellent warm with a scoop of vanilla. I eat here all the time and enjoy every meal. Osie is always so nice when she is working. This really is a gem with tasteful throwbacks and an opportunity to sit where Mr. George H. W. Latif's is great. I come to Turlock to visit family every year and my favorite stop is always Latif's. Their pies are amazing, especially their coconut cream and berry pie (which is saying something cause I normally hate anything that's fruity or has berries.) My experience was nice cam in on a Saturday morning it wasn't to busy and I was able to grab a table quickly. The wait staff were all attentive got my food in less then 10min and was happy. My team and I had a very bad experience at Latifs. The food took forever and they mixed up all of our orders and forgot some of our food. They were very rude and treated us like crap. I would give it 1 1/2 stars. 1 star for the food and 1/2 star for the service and people who work there. Really had high expectations only to be let down. Just like you are probably doing right now I did the same thing. Went on yelp and read the outstanding reviews. My wife ordered the breakfast quesdilla and I got the omlete. The quesdilla wasn't anything special. The omlete was $9.95 ($1 extra for EACH topping) came with dry and stale potatoes and greasy onion and green pepper topping. We also ordered the berry pie which wasn't all the great (Costco pies are way better) can't complain about the service, staff was friendly. read more

I ordered a variety of fruit and cream pies from Latif's for my wedding instead of cake and they were perfect. Unlike a cake, I didn't have to order them months in advance (more like a few weeks) and I was called as soon as they were ready to be picked up. Like another reviewer stated, subpar food and attitude for no reason from some of the waitstaff of older cranky women. When you have a low end product, you'd better be extra nice to make up for it. I have worked in restaurants and also tip well and treat people in customer service very sensitively, however the customer service workers of Turlock are so rude and awful in so many of the businesses here, it makes one want to stop giving the benefit of the doubt. Recently while eating here, older blond waitress was rude to us right off the bat for no reason at all, never ordered our drinks for us though quickly did for the tables next to us, greeted our table late without apologizing, instead making a statement to seemingly blame us for taking a "long time" (wtf????) gave me a tiny child's size drink but charged me for a much larger size, made bitchy comments to us through the entire meal, and food took too long for what we ordered. Just an all around awful experience. As far as the food is concerned, the best thing is the probably-frozen hash browns. How hard is that to mess up? Biscuits and gravy absolutely suck here. Cook should take a trip to the south one day to get an idea of what they should taste like and how hot they should be. I will happily look for another diner, as the food and Turlock attitude that comes with this place is not worth the short trip down, and I'm not expecting much of anything at all to change around here. read more

I went there yesterday with my father, the food was fine decor was super cute but the service was terrible. Stood at the door forever to be seated till the waitress finally came out and told us to sit where ever. Our waitress didn't start off very nice but warmed up. Food took a long time to come out. This is Turlocks oldest restaurant. It caters primarily to seniors. The decore is from the 70's at best. The cuisine also dates back that far. My eggs were not correctly cooked. The hash browns were bland. The chicken fried steak was without any kind of flavor. It was so horrible, I sent it back because of the chicken fried steak. I would have eaten the hash browns and eggs. My friend ordered corned beef hash. That also had no flavor. We changed our meats to bacon. Sadly though, the manager came over. In five minutes, she THRICE said no one ever complains about their food. She also said they weren't allowed to season anything because of laws. I would bet she lied, or was otherwise miss informed. Our new food arrived, and she still didn't leave. I finally asked what she wanted from us. She said she just wanted to apologize. I said apology was accepted, and we were trying to move forward. She finally left. But, she had already made us feel uncomfortable, and we lost our appetites. Despite the bacon being decent enough, the poor quality, ten dollar meal was further ruined by the "manager." I kid you not....Jack in the Box would have cost less, and tasted better, and we wouldn't have had a "manager" latch on like a parasite. When I saw "she" was the cashier, I sent my remaining party ahead. I told her that we didn't appreciate being told 3 times in 5 minutes that no one else had complained. She kept interrupting me. She walked towards the front door, and I followed. I didn't need everyone else hearing the argument, and it was an argument. A managers job is to accept criticism, resolve the issue, and move forward. She did none of that. She DID, however, cal me a five letter word beginning with B. I started walking away, and she started to follow me. Every time I tried to leave, she kept yapping her flap, and followed me. Yes, I was yelling at her...she kept interuping, kept calling me a B, wouldn't shut up, and kept following me. She threatened to call the police. I said, "Please do". She still didn't leave, but called me a B at least once more. Eventually, every time she opened her mouth, I said, "I'm not speaking with you, now leave." I had to do that three times before she finally shut up and left. I will NEVER go here again. read more

Went there today for lunch and was told,"Sit wherever you want." About five minutes later another couple came in and sat down at the table behind us. The waitress went right over to them and got them something to drink. We were still ignored. She fiddled around at the cash register for a while then went back to the table behind us and took their order. Still ignored us. We sat for over 15 minutes trying to get her attention and were ignored. My mom is is in a wheelchair now and she was so excited to go today because she and my dad used to go here all the time. This place has been around forever and is always packed with elderly people. Being someone that is 28 I have been here a dozen times and all of the food I have had is bland and tasteless. I had the breakfast burrito and had to drowned it in sauce. I also had a burger and it had no flavor. Our waitress forgot our orange juice (maybe its because their waitresses are 70 years old). I can go there and get pancakes and basic stuff like that but its not worth the money. Oh i forgot, the only reason to even acknowledge this place is the pie. I have been coming to Latif"s for years. We had the worst waitress ever. She was so confused when all I asked was no mushrooms on the steak sandwich. She came back three times and asked me what it was i didnt want on my steak. My sister-in-law ordered a cheese burger with no onions. When the food came out my steak sandwich was covered in mushrooms. When I told the waitress i didnt want mushrooms she said I was confusing her. I have fond memories of Bob bringing pies to the fair and letting us sneak in and pick a slice of one of their awesome selections. I think r.l. has given a very accurate depiction of what to expect at Latif's. Didn't get a chance to try the pie...but did have a patty melt and fries. One of the best patty melt's I've ever had. This place feels like you walked into a old school diner which is pretty cool. There is a lot of history here. They have an amazing breakfast selection (amazing breakfast quesadilla) and the service is good. There are a few downfalls. One, it is not kid friendly in that there aren't high chairs.
