Hubs ordered the ham and eggs special--a great deal. I opted for an 11am lunch and chose the Philly chicken and cheese sandwich. No sides come with it so I opted for an(huge) side salad--and only ate half because the sandwich was good! Do not eat here! Unless you're REALLY hungry! I've eaten at the Hot Rod Diner several times and each time, not only was the food excellent, but the portions are large! I leave with a box every time! Additionally, the service is outstanding and the staff is always courteous and polite. Even when they're crazy busy! And the place is popular, so they do tend to get pretty busy. Came into town to visit family for the week and we came here on a Friday morning and it was a great dining experience. Customer service, waiting and food was all great. We were waited on by Jackie who was an exceptional, polite and kind waitress. She checked on us constantly and had everything in our order correct. We also wanted to give a two thumbs up to the cook because our food was fabulous and tasty! The environment was calm, moderately noisy which was great for the family setting. We truly loved it here and it was great value for the quality and amount of food that was served. Walked in and the waitress was great. Friendly greeting and said sit where we wanted. She came over after delivering food to someone else and got our drink orders and dropped off menus (pretty standard to this point). She was great, friendly and took care of us without smothering. Got a good recommendation from her (omelette w/ chorizo) Plate was full, she kept the coffee topped off. Good experience overall. The only 'knock' I'd throw would be to the ambiance. I know the look of the 'fifties' diner was the try but it fell a little flat and just looks tired. That being said, not going there to eat the ambience, just good breakfast fare. read more

Have been coming to this location because of bad experience at their Turlock restaurant. This location is what the Turlock location used to be: good, large food portions and excellent service. It was impossible for our coffee cup to run empty with all the help constantly asking if a refill was needed. This place has more seating and less wait time, so it is well worth the drive from Turlock. read more

Seriously, life is to short to eat at the same place every other day except when you have a " Never Ending Pasta Pass" from the Olive Garden but that's another story. Totally bummed! I usually eat at the Turlock location but thought I would try this one today. Big mistake! First of all we didn't get our drinks until after our food . Plus my potatoes where cold. Waitress was horrible not well at multi tasking what so ever! I have been wanting a hot rod omelette for a while now and wish I wouldn't have come here! I was disappointed from all aspects . I'm actually still sitting waiting for her to get my bill. It's working on 10 minutes or so and still no bill. Just recently bought a home in Hilmar and was looking for a local place to grab a nice breakfast. My search began and ended when I experienced Hot Rod Diner for the first time. The friendly greeting upon entering was a nice breath of fresh air. While I was/am new in the community, it was as if they had known me for a long time. Warm, friendly, greeting with a smile, what a novel way to greet the guest! It's something that you rarely see anywhere. When I saw their extensive menu with all the options.... I was like WOW! The large portions are not a hit and miss, that is how they serve everything that I have seen. The food always comes out of the kitchen tasting consistently the same. Credit to the cooks and kitchen staff! Delicious food! In closing I must give a shout out to the service staff! Hattie, Lauren, Jackie, etc are absolutely THE BEST! Friendly greetings, pretty smiles, exceptional service, great conversationist, remembering what you order... the list can go on and on! So I say Thank You to the entire staff! Job well done! If I could give this place a 0 star I would. By far one of the worse experiences I have ever encountered celebrating a birthday. We went in for our lunch to celebrate our Co Workers birthday. It was about 14 of us so we called ahead of time to order our food as we only had an hour to eat. We get there and everything was fine. Our waitress, CRISTINA, who made this whole experience bad was one of the worse waitresses I have ever encountered with. She never went to our table to ask if we needed refill, forgot our silverware and kept forgetting the sauces we had asked for since the beginning. She then comes to bring us a tab all together when mind you, she never once asked us if we were all together or seperate. She goes ahead and splits a tab for one of our co workers but then goes and says that she can't do it for the rest of the party? Like really? Why not? I had an $8 meal and she was trying to charge me $15 for my meal? Ridiculous right? When i went up to her being respectful, she turns around and starts blabbing words saying "how ridiculous we were" like its our fault she didn't ask us how the ticket was going to be. I've waitress before and know that for a fact you can split tabs and still charge gratuity on each tab, as that's what it seemed like she was after the most. Most extreme rude waitress ever! If you want to have an All American dinner experience, Hot Rod is your place! This in an old building located on Lander Avenue, the busiest street in Hilmar. It has plenty of parking around it, which makes it a good location. The ambience reminds me of the Happy Days dinner: booths with red leather seats, checkered floor, and 50's decoration. The staff is friendly, they make sure that you always have coffee in your cup and water in your glass. The food is decent and the portions and massive, so you can easily share a breakfast plate with two people. I personally like their pancakes that cover the whole plate with couple eggs over easy and two sausage links. They get busy during the weekend, especially in the early morning. So make sure to go early in the morning or close to noon if you don't want to wait for a seat! read more
