This restaurant is a good experience if you want to venture out and try some African ethnic food but you must be prepared that the chef has a particular way of prepared things. He does not change the items at all. The goat cheese spread appetizer is extremely good. I had the oxtails they were very good. It was some things that I didn't care about very much, but Everything was well prepared and presented very nicely. You definitely have to be prepared that they don't have your traditional, like soft drinks, or other things like that because everything is very authentic from the drinks to the decor to the menu. I had such a wonderful time celebrating my and a friend's birthday during our trip to Arizona at Latha, a truly African diasporic experience! We came to Latha on our first night and were greeted by a live saxophonist! While we waited for our food we went to the gift shop, where we were asked our birthdays. During dinner, we were gifted bracelets dedicated to our day of birth or one that had a special meaning. The space is warm and welcoming and we were able to sit outside and enjoy the beautiful night. Evelia and her team were beyond hospitable, providing recommendations on where to go in Phoenix, complimentary shots and we were even able to meet the chef! Food experience was amazing! We did the chefs journey. It was a special peach and cashew salad and the tamarind wings were delicious but if you don't like spicy those wings will get you! Had the pork chop and fish. Seasoned and cooked perfectly! And the desert was to the best desert of the year for me! So good I took some home. Definitely recommend this place. The contemporary interior, vibrant exterior, live music on the patio (S/o to the singer she was electric)-I thought LATHA had it all. It really is one of the most unique restaurants we have in the valley if you consider what they offer and the great experience. I went with a group of 6. The consensus was our shared appetizers- fava bean hummus and whipped goat cheese were all very good. We did need to order extra bread for the table which was surprisingly more expensive than I thought. We all agreed that our entrees were underwhelming. I ordered the oxtail which was noticeably fattier than my other friends. After performing surgery to remove the fat I did feel that the meat was scarce. I wasn't blown away by any food specific. I couldn't rightly give Latha anything less than 5 stars despite waiting an hour before we received our food. I'm sure it was an oversight and mix up in the kitchen, which happens but after a long day and being hungry in the moment I was extremely irritated. However, we were comped two appetizers and the service and exquisite Pan African flavors made up for it. The SERVICE! We went on a Sunday evening with no reservations and were able to get seating at the bar. The service was great. We felt welcomed and even got a tour of the restaurant by the owner. The AMBIANCE! Cool, quaint and intimate which I loved. Feels very exclusive and has a great vibe. The theme of the restaurant is showcased throughout with a warm and home like feel. There was a violinist playing music which elevated the experience all together. The FOOD! Amazing! As mentioned we were comped two appetizers, the whipped goat cheese and the watermelon salad. The whipped goat cheese was AMAZING. I absolutely loved it. I'm sure it will be my go to going forward. It was made with a black garlic honey which wasn't overly sweet but perfectly balanced with the pungent flavors of the goat cheese. The chapati bread that came along with the cheese was fresh, warm and melts in your mouth. The watermelon salad was refreshing but lacked the complexity of flavors that was present in every other dish. I order the Dayboat Moqueca which was divine. The coconut chutney pulled the dish together with perfect harmony. The fish was flaky and the rice grits were creamy with a nice texture and consistency. My husband got the awaze chicken, which was really good. The chicken had a nice smoke flavor and the spices were present. The portion of chicken was on the smaller side but was enough with the appetizers. The DRINKS! Great! Balanced! Unique! This is one of our new favorite spots, that we are looking forward to introducing our friends to. Loved! If I could give this place 10/5 stars, I would. Everything was amazing. They were very accommodating even though we changed our mind at the last minute and wanted to sit outside. There is live music that's outside on the weekends. Everyone we encountered were so kind and friendly, it's really a community effort of service. We even got a little visit by one of the owners asking us how everything was. They have some very unique mocktails. I tried the sangria and it was lovely. Not too sweet. We also had the goat cheese, shrimp, duck and salmon. The spiciness of the shrimp and the sweetness / creaminess of the goat cheese were a perfect pair. The shrimp is extra spicy though, so only get it if you love spice. The duck and salmon had very unique flavor profiles. This is my new favorite restaurant in downtown phoenix!! They also have this amazing little shop with imported and locally sourced African goods. We purchased some things before dinner and then went back again after for some more. I had the most amazing experience at Latha. I was reluctant to go initially and decline the invite at first but at the insistence of a colleague I decided to give it a try. I woke up the next morning thinking about the food. The ambiance was amazing. The owner was engaging and warm and the food was absolutely delicious. Immediately our waitress came over and she was great. She ran down the specials of the day and made her recommendations as well. For appetizers we ordered the watermelon salad which was big enough to share amongst three of us and also the whipped Goat cheese which was my favorite. I went to Latha for the first time. The ambiance is beautiful. I love how African heritage is showcased throughout the restaurant and the live music was great. The music was slightly loud, so it was difficult to hear the waitress/hostess when they were describing items from the menu. However, the staff were quite friendly. As for the food, I found it very flavorful. As a starter my friends and I had the whipped goat cheese and bread. As a Kenyan I thought it was misleading to call the bread Chapati. The bread was more of a pita bread than Chapati. But it went well with the goat cheese. For the main course I ordered the Dayboat Moqueca with shrimp (they ran out of the fish of the day and it's not pictured here). The flavor was great but the portion size was not worth the cost at all! Which was disappointing to me. My drink, Mrembo martini, was delicious and strong. I would order it again. First time here tonight! Warmly greeted by the server and owner who sat us on the lovely patio. Our waitress was extremely knowledgeable of the menu and dishes. I'm gluten free and there were a TON of options which were clearly indicated on the menu. The whipped goat cheese was smooth and a perfect combination of smoky and sweet with the sumac and garlic honey. I enjoyed it with a beautiful arrangement of veggies including jicama, cucumbers, and thinly sliced watermelon radishes. For my main course I enjoyed the duck tajine which had a rich curry sauce, the duck was cooked perfectly and accompanied with roasted veggies. I really wanted to like this place more. It's black and female owned so I was looking forward to trying it. Unfortunately our experience was very disappointing. We were celebrating my birthday and the food took forever. We were going to the airport after dinner and even though we came with plenty of time we ended up having to rush because of how long we waited for our meals. The whipped goat cheese was really delicious but other than that nothing else stood out. My boyfriend had the oxtails barbacoa and it was not that good. The flavors of the food here are so unique and delicious. We had the whipped goat cheese, halibut moqueca and piri piri chicken. it was all really flavorful. We had an amazing time at Latha. All the staff was super friendly. The service wasn't super fast but it wasn't so slow that it was any issue. Personally I thought it was nice to relax and enjoy the ambiance. They had live music the night we went and it was the perfect volume. Not too loud that we couldn't talk but loud enough that we could hear it and the singer was great! All of the food tasted amazing!!! And they had some unique things on the menu. What are the odds I had on her shirt this visit. Food: whipped goat cheese, dayboat dish (fish of the day with stone grit and a coconut relish), the burger, and watermelon salad. Great gem in PHX. We came around 6pm on a Tuesday and it wasn't busy. When we finished the restaurant was full. It seems like an old house converted into a restaurant, and it feels very comfortable inside. On the left is a bar and a store with African clothes. On the right is two dining rooms. The staff were very kind and mindful. Goat cheese and champati were good. But the ratio of champati and goat cheese were not right as it's just one flat bread and a large tub of goat cheese enough for four breads probably. Oxtail was very flavorful and tender. Came with mac and cheese. I think the dish could be upped with some veggies. Fish of the day was salmon. I opted for it to be cooked rare and it was cooked expertly. The skin was crispy and the rice grits tasted great. Perfect dish. Overall excellent experience and great vibe. The dishes can be tweaked just a little bit but are great as they are already. I would suggest adding more vegetarian options on the menu as there is only one entree. I'm glad I found this place! read more

Business Dinner at Latha a Roaring Success I was hosting a business dinner downtown for 7 with guests from San Diego, Colorado, Vancouver and Germany. I chose Latha and was glad I did. Latha is located in Heritage Square just north of Pizza Bianco. We were greeted at the door by Idalia. She is one of the owners. She explained that the dishes come from Africa and the African diaspora in Brazil, the Caribbean, and the American South. While showing us to our table she showed us the bar and the large gift shop with clothes and other African products. They had a 3 course special of appetizer, entree and dessert and a wine list including wines from South Africa. Appetizers were chapati and goat cheese or spicy hot wings. I had the shrimp and grits and they were excellent. They also had South African Peri Peri Chicken. They had run out of the lamb dish. Dessert was pound cake with strawberries or a chocolate candy round. LATHA has been on my to-do food list for a while, so we decided to make a night of it when family were in town. We made reservations about a month in advance, and were promptly seated. First, the pros: 1. the GM (Will) and our server were great. They were warm, kind, and attentive. 2. The atmosphere was great. We lucked as the weather was beautiful and we were seated at a long table on the front porch. And the music throughout our service was fun. 3. The cocktails. We ordered several, each very unique and fun. Everyone loved their drinks. Now, about the food. I was really excited to try the food. I'd read about the intention behind the menu, I love the idea of a menu that celebrates the African diaspora, and I have eaten lots of food that has roots in African food ways (including parts of the US, South America, the Caribbean, and North Africa). So, I was intrigued to experience their culinary journey. But I was admittedly a little disappointed. All of our entrees were fine, but none of them WOW'd me. Not only that but the portions were small, and the food was EXPENSIVE. Our bill was just shy of $500. At the end of the day, I'm glad I tried it. The Valley Supper Club held its February dinner here and all I can say is WOW. 21 of us dined on the patio and we truly felt as if we were part of the Latha family. I couldn't help but think this restaurant would be a pleasant experience and I was not disappointed! LATHA embodies this span in its own unique and delicious way. The oxtails were tender and flavorful and the grits were fluffy and light, not the typical creamy style grits I'm accustomed to as a southern American. Nevertheless, the grits paired well with their oxtails. My stay was brief since I wanted to check it out before our supper club meetup. I can't wait to return to LATHA for a longer visit. Went to LATHA on a Saturday night and had such a great time. The vibe felt like we entered into a fun, super welcoming family party. It was busy when we arrived for our reservation so we had to wait just a few minutes for our table, but while we waited a delightful woman offered us small cocktails on the house.. turns out she was the owner roaming the restaurant throughout the night smiling & making conversation with everyone. There was also slight confusion where our server was busy & he missed us at the beginning.. once he realized, though, he was super engaged, brought us dessert on the house and another set of small cocktails. No harm, no foul! The food was mostly really fantastic. Shrimp appetizer with tostones and goat cheese Apple salad were incredible. My wife got the shrimp with grits entree and it was out of this world good. My steak was good but a not as tender as I had hoped but the flavors were unique & tasty. Rice pudding with coconut & raisins was & flaming Caipirinha was a legit cocktail (I can see why they limit one per guest). Throughout the night the owner & general manager came by introducing themselves, offering a taste of boozy whipped cream, saying hi, and just having a good time. It's a mark of a special restaurant to have hospitality like that. You should go to LATHA.. we'll be back. I'm excited to try their Oxtail sometime and see how their menu continues to develop.
