I was so happy to come across this tremendous find in Scottsdale/Phoenix, AZ! A black woman owned restaurant that serves African, Caribbean and Brazilian cusine! The food was yummy and the decor was inspiring. You must order the pound cake for dessert. I had the oxtails and my dinner mate had the shrimp and grits. We even perused the store, Soko, also owned by the same woman. I snagged 2 beautiful rings to remind me of my time at LATHA. Run, don't walk, to have this experience!
We ate at Latha before the Mercury game. We walked to the game and boy did we need to walk off the delicious dinner & desert. Life is a very quaint restaurant with a laid back yet beautiful atmosphere. We met one of the owners & she gave us recommendation for food & it did not disappoint. We will be back, I have to try to oxtails. Everybody was ordering them..
There were many places I could have gone for my birthday, but I chose Latha, and I am extremely happy that I did. The ambiance there is amazing. You get a great feel of African culture. The service was beyond exceptional. Our server Curt could not have been anymore friendly and welcoming. The food was amazing. I got the 3 course meal which is a great way to get a taste of everything. I will definitely be back here. 10/10 highly recommended. No surprise this place has already been noticed by the Michelin star in only a few years.
Wow, this place has blown me away in every way possible! Some friends and I came to Latha for a joint birthday and anniversary celebration on a Saturday night. I made reservations beforehand and I'm glad I did because it definitely gets busy. we had one of the best tables in the house outside on the patio right next to the live music. This was very conveniently located next to the science center, which we visited afterward. To start I love that you're able to shop their small boutique store while you wait for your table to be ready. The store had some great artisan skincare crafted locally and many clothing, jewelry and woven items that benefit an African tribe. Now on to the food & drinks. The drink menu features some familiar cocktails with an African flare. I opted for their lemonade and added a shot of vodka, it was so delicious and refreshing. The food truly tastes as good as it looks! We shared the hummus, it wasn't too overpowering in onion flavor and the bread was perfectly dense and fluffy. For my main entree I was the peri peri chicken. Everything on the plate was a 5/5 for me, all super flavorful & cooked to perfection. To top it all off they were so gracious to provide us with birthday and anniversary gifts and even a special shot for each of us of their mama Juana. This was some of the best hospitality I've experienced which was a cherry on top to the exceptional food and drinks. I will certainly be back soon!
We ordered two appetizers: whipped goat cheese (with black garlic honey, radishes, sumac, and chapati) and the griot wings (tamarind-glazed, which is the spiciest option), along with two entrees: the lamb griot (served with couscous and sweet plantains) and the oxtail barbacoa (served over their version of mac and cheese). Starting with the appetizers, I'd say these two were my favorites of the night. The chicken wings (5 pieces) were tender and flavorful, featuring a very unique spice blend. The whipped goat cheese wasn't overly gamey, it was perfectly creamy and paired well with the black garlic honey, which tasted a lot like fig jam. The homemade chapati was great too. However, the ratio of cheese to bread was a bit off. We heard a server asking the next table if they wanted more chapati, so we assumed an extra piece was complimentary. We later found out we were charged $6 for it, which was a bit of a surprise tho. As for the entrees, the oxtail barbacoa was the biggest oxtail I've ever seen. It was packed with tender meat and rich gelatin, and the radiatori pasta with gouda was wonderfully creamy and delicious. The lamb griot was a unique dish I hadn't tried before, while the portion of lamb wasn't huge, it was very good. The plantains were amazing and slightly sweet, making the whole dish incredibly flavorful. Overall, it was a really cool experience. The food is highly seasoned and flavorful without being overly salty like most restaurants, though it is definitely on the pricier side. Our server was very busy that night, so checking out took quite a bit of time. The atmosphere is awesome with great decor, merchs, and live performances. ps. The chairs are incredibly hard and uncomfortable, I couldn't sit in them for too long lol
LATHA is a unique culinary experience of a restaurant serving up some delicious pan-African cuisine. This spot is located at the historic Heritage Square in Downtown Phoenix where street parking will be your best bet. Inside, they have a cozy and homey feel with African-inspired decor. Wifey and I stopped by for brunch with a reservation and were seated right away. We ended up getting the Burnt Onion Hummus, Fried Chicken & Banana Rum Waffle, and the Steak & Eggs. Everything that we had was delicious! All of the staff here, including the owner, are all very friendly and welcoming. Definitely book your next table here for brunch or dinner and you will not regret it!
Torn on this one. I made a reservation for a group and requested to sit in the quietest area possible. We were set up at a lovely table on the patio-it was really nice. Road noise occasionally, but not terrible. The fragrance of the flowers, the misters and the occasional bird visitor added to the quaint charm of our experience. At first, the service was great. We had a couple different servers-seems there was some confusion on who would be taking our table-but friendly folks, regardless. The pacing of the drinks and the appetizers started out ok too, but over time started to slip. Drinks were forgotten, one person's starter didn't come out at all and our server became less and less available. When it came time for our main course, 4/5 people received what they ordered. When the wrong dish was presented to the fifth person, she recognized that it wasn't right an politely questioned it. The girl who was delivering the food (not our server) pushed back and said that it was pretty close, "it's fish isn't it?" No, we paid for an upgraded dish and this wasn't it. She had to wait another ten minutes to get her correct dish, while the entire group awkwardly waited and picked at their remaining appetizers to try to look busy. Drinks continued to wait...we were told that the bar tender was behind. No apology for the dish mishap, no acknowledgement when one person tried two bites of food and then pushed it away. (Turns out the corrected dish was rushed-overdone on the outside, underdone in the middle). I would have loved the opportunity to make it right, but staff seemed to vanish. It does have some great character and potential-maybe we just hit it on an off night.
LATHA!!! Just an absolute VIBE with Mouthwatering flavor packed food!! I was invited to LATHA for a small birthday gathering, and it was so much more. The staff were welcoming and knowledgeable. Our waitress was attentive and helpful with recommendations on what to order according to our palettes. Everything I ordered was amazing from my drink to my food and without the waitress keen input,I might of made the wrong choice. The ambience was a vibe!! Afro centric and chic, with beautiful outdoor dining and decor. They also had some good photo op spaces to take pictures. One last thing the owner was front and center assisting her staff and greeting and engaging with all who came,and that is something you don't always see and I would've never known until someone mentioned she was the owner! Latha is such a beautiful restaurant! From the moment you walk in, you're surrounded by gorgeous décor and a warm, welcoming atmosphere that truly celebrates African culture. The space has a classy, mid-upscale vibe definitely giving "bougie" in the best way while still feeling comfortable and inviting. We visited on a Saturday, and the live music was phenomenal. The musicians played a great mix of current songs, which created an amazing atmosphere throughout the restaurant. The staff greeted us warmly and made us feel right at home. I also loved the thoughtful touch of offering personal handheld fans to guests if they got warm. The bar was another standout. I really appreciated that the cocktails are crafted using African or Black-owned liquors, making the drink menu feel unique and intentional. If you don't drink alcohol, they also have a wonderful selection of mocktails and natural teas, so there are plenty of options for everyone. The food took a little longer than expected to come out, but nothing unreasonable. The portions are generous, and the prices are fair for the quality and amount of food you receive. We ordered the oxtails, jollof rice, broccoli, peri-peri chicken, and pineapple chicken. Everything was delicious, especially the oxtails and jollof rice. My only recommendation is to be prepared if you're not a fan of spicy food the piri piri chicken definitely has some heat. Since they don't offer ranch or similar cooling sauces, just keep that in mind when ordering. Overall, Latha offers more than just great food it's a full experience. Between the beautiful atmosphere, live music, welcoming hospitality, thoughtfully curated drinks, and flavorful African cuisine, it's a restaurant I would absolutely recommend. I can't wait to come back and try more from the menu!
Tonight we celebrated an amazing group of women at a fantastic dinner in DT Phoenix. Latha is "eat drink vibe". It's delicious, unique, flavorful, and beautiful, like those that run the business. Step into this old home transformed into a soulful place for family and gathering and delight. I had the Chef's Journey 3 course meal. Watermelon salad, oxtails, and pound cake. Sounds simple right? Served with chunky feta and perfectly ripe avo, the water melon salad was a solid start. Oxtails so tender the meat fell apart. The Mac n cheese with Gouda had a spicy kick. Pound cake served WARM with mango and cream. Hibiscus mule so good i had two. Oscar was our incredible server and the entire team was warm and so engaged! Go! Go there now! Valet parking out front was the cherry on top. Thank you for an incredible experience.
Had a wonderful time here for a Saturday night dinner. Tip for those coming, there's only valet out front with limited spots. I'd recommend parking elsewhere and walking over! Starting off with service, Jasiri could not have done a better job! His recommendations were fabulous and he was beyond attentive. Loved chatting with both him and the lovely owner! She came by our table twice and also gave some recommendations. Drinks were divine. I had the King Kiungo (per Jasiri's rec) which was delicious. Slight spice with some sweetness. Had the watermelon salad and goat cheese appetizers which were tangy and fresh to get us started! For my main, I adored the dayboat moqueca with salmon. Super flavorful with perfectly cooked salmon. The vibes outside were phenomenal with a live saxophone player, nice lighting, and pretty decor. Would be a lovely date night spot! I cannot recommend this place enough and am so excited to come back!
Came here for my 3 year anniversary and what an unforgettable experience! From appetizer to dessert, each meal was made with heart and soul. I have no feedback on any of the dishes we ordered because they were that good. They take care of you so well. I love the ambiance and the option to choose from indoor/outdoor seating. I appreciate that their menu also has a range of vegan and gluten free options. Sorayyah, our host is a local artist who made the murals outdoors. She gave us a sweet gift for our anniversary and also showed us the shop located inside. Everyone working there is so personable, it leaves a mark on you. 6/5 stars and would seriously come back again. Thank you so much for the best restaurant experience this year!
We celebrated a joint birthday dinner at Latha after hearing about it online, and it was absolutely delightful! We didn't spend much time looking at the menu before we decided we had to do the chef's journey 3 course meal. For the quality and amount of food you get it is definitely worth it. I also went with the wine pairing option as a little birthday treat. The ambience was warm and cozy. It felt like eating in someone's home. The decor was very nice and really captured the pan-African vibe. Lastly, the service was outstanding. Everyone was so personable. Our table had a happy birthday sign on it from the minute we walked in, and one of the co-owners came by to personally wish us a happy birthday and see how things are going. Then, they surprised us by gifting us bracelets with our Akan names based on the day of the week we were born. It was very special and informative!
There was a lovely live band playing outside that created such a beautiful atmosphere! It's a wonderful greeting! But sitting at our table, the music was just a little bit too loud. It got hard to hear my friends at our table as well as the waitress. Attached to the restaurant are a bar and a gift shop with all kinds of goods imported from Ghana. On sale they have a variety of items like chocolate, jewelry, clothing, and skin care. They let us look around there while we waited for our table to get ready. My friends and I started with the whipped goat cheese appetizer. I thought it was such a unique and flavorful dish. The honey mixed with the subtle taste of the cheese was unbeatable! I would highly recommend. For my main course, I ordered the Dayboat Moqueca. They were out of the fish of the day I guess, so it was made with shrimp instead. Overall, the dish was ok. It was way too small for its $38 price tag. And I'm not sure what "rice grits" are, which is what's in the menu description, but it was essentially halfway between coconut rice and risotto. That part was good, and the sauce was very flavorful, but the single broccolini in the dish tasted unseasoned, and the shrimp was slightly overdone. Overall, I commend the fusion of different flavors and the ambience, but I think my main dish was just a little bit lacking in a couple areas! read more

Incredible ownership I've been here both for dinner and brunch now, and could eat here all the time. You can tell that the owner takes so much pride in what she has built, and you can sense it in her compassionate and curious team, taste it in her outstanding food, and feel it in the positive energy that exudes from this place. I first came here to treat one of my directors to dinner before she moved out of town. When you were seated, we asked if we were celebrating anything and I just responded that we were sending my director off on a new journey as she was moving out of state. About 10 minutes later, the owner came out with the sweetest bracelet that she gave to her as a gift. She told her a story about the meaning and wished her best of luck. It was one of the most unexpected, thoughtful, and kind gestures I have seen or felt not because of the gift put in the delivery in the meaning behind it. Came here with a friend, I had a co-worker tell me about this place and wanted to try it. Its right down in Heritage Park so convenient to downtown PHX. When entering the you can get a sense of the roots if the restaurant the smell of spices was inviting. The place is decorated to reflect its African roots. The food, so lets dive in. We started off with the Black Eye Pea hummus. It was good, the pickled veggies was excellent, the inly issue was the one piece of bread (chapati) which isn't enough for the amount of hummus you get, we got another Chapati ($6). For the entree i got the Mushroom Criollo this was outstanding. It had a slight spicy note to it which was not over powering. I would get this again, but i want to try some of the other items too. My friend has the Fishboat and Grits (fish was salmon) she loved it and the piece of salmon was huge. We had the Latha Lemonade and it was very refreshing. They were out of many items on the brunch menu when we were there and we arrived at 1130 (when they opened). I can see this being a place i will be coming back to. Our second Arizona Dining experience. Decided to try something new and different. We loved the historical house, decoration and decided to sit outside. We loved the entertainer outside, Coco Wason, we had better we listened to her for a hour between our first and second course. We must have asked between 30' and 40' after our 1st course came when our main was coming and the response was it is made from scratch, sorry I know this isn't McDonalds most restaurants like this you do make from scratch, LOL. How was the food it was tasty but for the three course it was 55 was reasonable, can't imagine paying the going standard menu for similar portions. Two hours for a three course was a bit long and the crowds were light and help never seemed to have any urgency. The final disappointment was they expected us to use our forks from first and second course for desert and than we had to ask for a spoon. For the one of the deserts. You decide should they have brought us a smaller spoon ? The highlight was Coco, she was great at least! read more

Came here for date night and was impressed! The location is so cute and relaxing. There was live music playing and the restaurant is filled with art. There is also a shop by the bar selling assorted items like coffee, chocolates, clothing and jewelry. The food is amazing here and I have never really had African cuisine before and love big flavors. The watermelon salad is delicious, the piri piri chicken wings were good but wished it had more spice. My husband had the oxtail for main course and I had the duck tajine. Both were delicious. We enjoyed our meal. The dessert were to die for! We ordered both. My personal favorite is the southern pound cake. So fruity and refreshing but also very decadent and light. Latha has been on my list to try for a while now, especially since one day my sister & I were taking a walk downtown and passed by. They were closed, but the owner, Evelia, invited us in, gave us a tour and a sample of their Ethiopian Mule. Her hospitality and joy added to the allure of Latha, so we finally dined last night and it did not disappoint! There was live music & the place was bustling! Went last night to celebrate my birthday, and there are no words that would do justice to how magical this experience was. Hear me out... Just Go! This place feels like home, where ever you're from, if you're... Us. It's for everyone, but for Us, it feels beautiful. I walked up thr stairs and was immediately greeted by the hostess. Don't want to butcher her name but she has a beautiful spirit and was so kind. We were only going for drinks so she seated me at the bar with Joyce. Sweet Joyce is so knowledgeable and gave Hubs and I an overview of all of their spirits. Her drinks are sooo tasty. If you get her as your bartender... lucky you! I had the rum punch and a marg, she had me super tipsy when I left. I'd go back for more of her drinks. She's such a beauty and her drinks are top notch. I love that most of their spirits are black owned. Phoenix doesn't realize how much we needed this place. Everything about it feels like home and I only had drinks. Just go. It's that good. I can't wait to go back. They didn't have many pescatarian options but the drinks made up for it. Absolutely phenomenal! From the moment I walked into LATHA, I knew I was in for something special. The atmosphere is warm and inviting with a modern yet cozy vibe. The service was outstanding--friendly, attentive, and knowledgeable about the menu. Every dish was a standout! The flavors were bold, fresh, and beautifully balanced. You can tell there's real passion behind the cooking here. Whether it was the perfectly spiced entrees or the melt-in-your-mouth dessert, everything was simply unforgettable. This restaurant is a good experience if you want to venture out and try some African ethnic food but you must be prepared that the chef has a particular way of prepared things. He does not change the items at all. The goat cheese spread appetizer is extremely good. I had the oxtails they were very good. It was some things that I didn't care about very much, but Everything was well prepared and presented very nicely. You definitely have to be prepared that they don't have your traditional, like soft drinks, or other things like that because everything is very authentic from the drinks to the decor to the menu. I enjoyed myself the staff was great. The owner is awesome. I had such a wonderful time celebrating my and a friend's birthday during our trip to Arizona at Latha, a truly African diasporic experience! We came to Latha on our first night and were greeted by a live saxophonist! While we waited for our food we went to the gift shop, where we were asked our birthdays. During dinner, we were gifted bracelets dedicated to our day of birth or one that had a special meaning. The space is warm and welcoming and we were able to sit outside and enjoy the beautiful night. Evelia and her team were beyond hospitable, providing recommendations on where to go in Phoenix, complimentary shots and we were even able to meet the chef! The drinks and food were delicious and it will be on the top of our list the next time we visit! read more

We came for happy hour and loved our time here. The food was delicious, the pimento burger was what we both enjoyed and it is hearty and filling! My husband also enjoyed the wings and i started with the whipped feta which was rich and delicious. We both enjoyed well made cocktails and mocktails also. The contemporary interior, vibrant exterior, live music on the patio (S/o to the singer she was electric)-I thought LATHA had it all. It really is one of the most unique restaurants we have in the valley if you consider what they offer and the great experience. I went with a group of 6. The consensus was our shared appetizers- fava bean hummus and whipped goat cheese were all very good. We did need to order extra bread for the table which was surprisingly more expensive than I thought. We all agreed that our entrees were underwhelming. I ordered the oxtail which was noticeably fattier than my other friends. After performing surgery to remove the fat I did feel that the meat was scarce. I wasn't blown away by any food specific. Went here for our anniversary and everything was amazing! We sat outside it was gorgeous with the sun set. Food was amazing and came super fast and delicious. On Saturday we did a girls day! After watching Dreamgirls at The Phoenix Theater we stopped in at Latha for our 5pm reservation. We were sat down promptly and first thing I noticed is the beautiful decor and ambiance. The hostess was great & dressed to theme (Loved her attire). Immediately our waitress came over and she was great. She ran down the specials of the day and made her recommendations as well. For appetizers we ordered the watermelon salad which was big enough to share amongst three of us and also the whipped Goat cheese which was my favorite. My entree was The shrimp dish and it was sooooo good. The flavors were right on point and not too overwhelming. My friends ordered the oxtail dish which they LOVED! The food was great. Definitely a twist on traditional dishes with some unique flavors and spices. The service was exceptional. The owner checked in on us several times throughout the evening and our waitress was extremely knowledgeable about the menu and made several great recommendations. Very cute chic atmosphere. I couldn't rightly give Latha anything less than 5 stars despite waiting an hour before we received our food. I'm sure it was an oversight and mix up in the kitchen, which happens but after a long day and being hungry in the moment I was extremely irritated. However, we were comped two appetizers and the service and exquisite Pan African flavors made up for it. The SERVICE! We went on a Sunday evening with no reservations and were able to get seating at the bar. The service was great. We felt welcomed and even got a tour of the restaurant by the owner. The AMBIANCE! Cool, quaint and intimate which I loved. Feels very exclusive and has a great vibe. The theme of the restaurant is showcased throughout with a warm and home like feel. There was a violinist playing music which elevated the experience all together. The FOOD! Amazing! As mentioned we were comped two appetizers, the whipped goat cheese and the watermelon salad. The whipped goat cheese was AMAZING. I absolutely loved it. I'm sure it will be my go to going forward. It was made with a black garlic honey which wasn't overly sweet but perfectly balanced with the pungent flavors of the goat cheese. The chapati bread that came along with the cheese was fresh, warm and melts in your mouth. The watermelon salad was refreshing but lacked the complexity of flavors that was present in every other dish. I order the Dayboat Moqueca which was divine. The coconut chutney pulled the dish together with perfect harmony. The fish was flaky and the rice grits were creamy with a nice texture and consistency. My husband got the awaze chicken, which was really good. The chicken had a nice smoke flavor and the spices were present. The portion of chicken was on the smaller side but was enough with the appetizers. The DRINKS! Great! Balanced! Unique! This is one of our new favorite spots, that we are looking forward to introducing our friends to. As the weather cools down will surely need to book reservations as more people get familiar with this gem. read more

I went to Latha for the first time. The ambiance is beautiful. I love how African heritage is showcased throughout the restaurant and the live music was great. The music was slightly loud, so it was difficult to hear the waitress/hostess when they were describing items from the menu. However, the staff were quite friendly. As for the food, I found it very flavorful. As a starter my friends and I had the whipped goat cheese and bread. As a Kenyan I thought it was misleading to call the bread Chapati. The bread was more of a pita bread than Chapati. But it went well with the goat cheese. For the main course I ordered the Dayboat Moqueca with shrimp (they ran out of the fish of the day and it's not pictured here). The flavor was great but the portion size was not worth the cost at all! Which was disappointing to me. My drink, Mrembo martini, was delicious and strong. I would order it again. Overall I would give it another shot just to try other dishes. read more

Some of the time, yes, but they will absolutely accommodate as the three times I went for dinner a reservation was not needed.
