We chose this place because it looked busy and the smells coming from the restaurant were irresistible. We were greeted and seated promptly and our waiter, Abi, came by and took our drink order and left. Within a few minutes our drinks came and he took our food order. We ordered a biftec sandwich, and an appetizer platter. However, the biftec sandwich was hard and super difficult to eat and the appetizer platter was just ok. We were hoping for a more tasteful authentic Cuban taste. Needless to say, we left disappointed. Overall, the restaurant is beautifully decorated with Cuban artwork and the crafted chairs were impressive. Our waiter, Abimalec, was super professional and friendly. Stopped here during the art fest for lunch. We got the empanadas and papa rellano's to start. The empanadas were amazing!! The beef was seasoned well and a had good crunch. I liked the papa rellanos but I thought there wasn't enough meat. Nevertheless, it was still really tasty. I got the chicken fajitas for main course, and my fiancé got the pork sandwich. Huge portion sizes! I really enjoyed the fajitas- I was just disappointed they don't offer guacamole-or even offered avocado instead. My fiancé said it was the best pork sandwich he's had. Location is a plus for this restaurant. Went on a Saturday night and the place was PACKED! So I decided to get a to go order at the bar. Food was decent not bad (Not West Tampa) but still good. Las Palmas is a real deal Cuban spot. Located in downtown Mt Dora, they have a nice atmosphere and great service. The picadillo is my go to and it never disappoints. The meat is tender and flavorful. The Cuban sandwich is always good. They have a garlic Cuban sandwich which we got today and it was a wonderful change from the traditional. So glad we decided to stop in! They were able to seat our family of 7 within minutes of arriving at the right distance indoors. The menu is pretty big and there's options for just about everyone no matter what! The plates themselves are HUGE and they are at a great price. My family got the fried pork meal with the 3 sides, ropa vieja 3 sides, steak sandwich and the chicken fajitas with two sides of mofongo! We all had left overs and every single thing we got was so tastey, cooked well and again huge plates! They also had happy hour which is so exciting to hear since it's so rare nowadays. Their mojitos were buy one get one! We got the regular mojito and a berry one which was a little on the sweeter side but still great. We were enticed to enter by the two for one Mojitos but to be honest the Mojitos were lacking. They were a bit watered down and did not taste like Mojitos at all. My girlfriend and mom had the 2 for 1 Margaritas and they were happy with their drinks. We also ordered the Cuban sampler and I found it to be a bit underwhelming. The potato balls were so dry I needed another Mojito just to swallow them. The croquetas were good but the empanadas were dry as well. The best part of our time there was the live entertainment. We have eaten at this restaurant several times and always sit at one of their outside tables. The atmosphere in Mount Dora is relaxing and fun so it adds to the enjoyment. Their food is good and the drinks are tasty. After dinner you can order cocktails "to go" and walk around enjoying the scenery or shopping. On our last visit we stopped by for dessert. The Havana Chocolate Dream Cake taste stale. This is unusual but we still sent it back. It was beyond trying to ignore the low quality. Food was really good! The picadillo, ropa vieja, tostones, yuca, and cuban bread were delicious. The croquetas were a little overcooked and mildly burnt tasting. Had been to this restaurant once before and visited again during the craft fair. Outside seating was a plus and the food was good. I have never heard of a restaurant adding a 20% automatic gratuity/ tip for a party of two people. I normally tip that amount so the amount wasn't an issue, but the fact that it is added automatically is bothersome. I will not be returning. read more

Christmas time is busy in Mount Dora. The holiday lights, shoppers, wonderers. Same goes for the handful of restaurants we get to choose from in this area. On a night where the streets and sidewalks were packed and average reservations were a 40 minute wait we were able to snag a spot at Las Palmas in around 15 minutes. Three of us seated inside and starving. We were greeted with a round of waters and a smile. Our order taken soon after and our bogo wine delivered with yummy bread for the table. Dinner sides are fairly large plates so my friend and I shared the Fajitas de Churrasco. Strips of delicious seasoned skirt steak with onions and sweet bell peppers. All served with warm tortillas, back beans and rice as well as normal fajitas compliments like sour cream, pico de gallo and cheese. The sizing was perfect to split and super tastey for sure. My friends hubby chose the masitas de puerco al ajillo dish filled with chunks of pork and grilled onions. We also shared a side of tostones that are large in size and deliciously fried. Our waitress was busy (as the night) but she was on top of serving us and tending to our requests. She sang for the restaurant and a short snippet of a song for our table. Such a lovely voice! Fast forward to the next day... I accidentally dropped my credit card out of my purse. Thank goodness I dropped it in the restaurant and was able to retrieve it from their safe the next day. No security worries at all. Safe and sound and ready to use for a to-go order that day. I ordered the pechuga a la parrilla - seasoned grilled chicken breast topped with caramelized onions with a side of boiled yucca. Delish! There is outdoor and indoor seating as well as a bar area. If you are there around dinner time, walk just a couple of blocks the towards the water to enjoy the sunset.. you won't regret it. read more

Hubs and I decided to stop in for a bite on a lazy afternoon with no agenda at all. He was wanting to try it since our visiting daughter and I had been here earlier in the fall for lunch. I'm a huge fan of Cuban sandwiches, so I already knew what I was planning on ordering. Hubs went for the same which doesn't usually happen when we are out to eat. We also ordered two Mojito's... They have to be THE best that I've had. The fresh mint. The fresh mint. The fresh mint. IMO, the muddled mint makes all the difference. Our server ( forgot her name) was friendly and attentive. We sat in the bar area and enjoyed our conversation while we waited for our food to arrive. We noticed a nice write up from the Orlando Sentinel that was framed and displayed in a cabinet near the restrooms... We didn't stop to read it as a couple were seated eating their lunch nearby, but next time I certainly will. It's amazing what you can learn from articles like that. We didn't actually eat here. We came in for a "cafecito" and sat at the bar for it. The place smelled delicious and people eating there surely looked happy with their food. The coffee oN the other hand, left us disappointed. We ordered two Cortaditos. They looked good when we got them, but were extremely watered down coffee with some kind of dairy foam on it and a good amount of sugar. It seemed like some kind of instant coffee mix. We loved having lunch here! The food was absolutely delicious. We went during the blueberry festival and expected there to be a wait, but we got right in. The waitress was attentive, but it was very noisy (which is the reason for the four stars). Our waitress was wearing a mask and it made it incredibly hard to hear her. The service was a good pace and we didn't feel rushed. Some of the entrees are a little pricey, but a Cuban sand which with fries is $12 and the margaritas and mojitos are 2 for 1 all the time and will run you about $10. Prior to bringing out your entrees they bring you freshly made bread- I'm not sure what the name of it is, as it is most likely a Cuban food and I am not as familiar with this type of food. They bring the basket with garlic butter, cilantro, and marinara sauce. If you like cilantro you will absolutely love the dipping sauce. We will definitely be back next time we are in Mt. Venturing to the downtown and historic district of Mount Dora the selection of eateries seems unlimited. Being with my family the necessity to find food quickly brought us to Las Palmas. Though busy, the staff was polite and efficient making getting a table a short wait. Being that we were around lunch time, we ordered the Cuban and Palomilla sandwiches. To begin, their fries are to die for, crispy, tasteful and well seasoned. I could have eaten those all day. Where to even start... came here with a party of 6 for lunch. Based on the other dining and table set ups they are very used to having large parties. Started off ordering drinks on the happy hour special (2 for 1 of the same drink). I ordered a classic Margarita but for some unknown reason when it was presented to me it was blue! They had added blue Curacao to the drink, which has a bitter orange flavor. While I was thinking of whether or not to send it back I overheard the bartender and waiter discussing another table that sent their drinks back for the very same reason and the bartender was having a fit. She was insistent that if the customer did not want a blue drink they should have mentioned that when ordering and the waiter should give it back to them and tell them the blue does not affect the flavor of the drink (it does). After hearing that I decided to leave it as I didn't want to cause a scene. This changed however when my MIL asked how the Margarita was and if she should order one. I didn't realize our waiter was behind me and informed her she should order another drink as the margs are too sweet and very bad. The waiter overheard and kindly asked if I would like another drink. I mentioned that I also didn't want my drink blue either and it was remade without the addition of Curacao. After everyone ordered their lunch we then had the next problem- the food took over and hour and a half to arrive. Finally after inquiring we were told that it would be 5 more minutes. When the food finally came out though it was piping hot- so clearly they had forgotten about our table and not fired the orders. I ordered a salad, not realizing it came in a gigantic fried taco shell, very off-putting as I just wanted a simple lunch salad. Others at the table ordered mofongo, which they said was good but salty. The only bright side of this entire experience was the waiter- he was kind and professional the entire service. read more
