My friend and I were in Mount Dora for their annual art festival, and it turned out to be a surprisingly chilly weekend. We parked on a side street and walked into the downtown area, passing Tony's Chowder House along the way. It immediately sounded like the perfect place to warm up before exploring the festival. We checked in for a table and were told the wait would only be a couple of minutes. While we were waiting, one of the servers--who ended up being our server, Bill--offered us a sample of their famous clam chowder. It was hot, peppery, and absolutely delicious. That sample alone confirmed we'd made the right choice. Because of the festival, the menu was limited, but I ordered a bowl of the clam chowder and a grilled shrimp skewer. The chowder was easily one of the best I've ever had, comparable to an incredible bowl I once had at Pike Place Market in Seattle. The shrimp skewer was also very flavorful and perfectly cooked. Bill was friendly and attentive throughout our visit, which made an already great experience even better. I'll definitely be stopping back at Tony's Chowder House the next time I'm in Mount Dora and experiencing their full menu. read more

We have been here twice and it was a perfect experience both times. A must visit if you love seafood and are visiting Mt. Dora. We had excellent service and love the old school fisherman's vibe inside. Both times, we couldn't get enough of the award winning clam chowder and recently took some cans home to share with family (that we still need to make)! I loved their shrimp po boy and my husband enjoyed their fish sandwich. Great selections of fresh seafood and something on the menu for everyone. I was looking for places to try around Mount Dora and I was pleasantly surprised by this option. Not only was it delish, but the restaurant is cozy, nicely decorated and the staff is friendly and attentive. When it is your first time dining in, they will give you a sample of their chowder and it sure is a nice touch! I went for the chowder and the crab cakes (meaty and delish) but if you did not consider the chowder as you get seated, that sample may change your mind. It is no small wonder that this place has received several championships & awards for their clam chowder! It truly is delicious & very flavorful! The hush puppies were wonderful bite-size delights. Our server was simply perfect! My only complaint is that one of the employees (or a manager or owner maybe?) made us feel totally unwelcome. The moment we walked into the door he bellowed at us to wait outside & stay out of the way...and that they would get to us whenever they could. Wait what??? We almost left '& went elsewhere at that point! Meanwhile, another employee was in the process of cleaning a table and politely told us to have a seat. While we were having our lunch, that one gentleman (I use the term very loosely by the way) continued to be very abrasive with whoever walked in the door in the same manner as he approached us. Can you say "no soup for you?!?!" I understand that the place was very small & that they were very busy, but seriously, there has to be another way to handle crowd control than being outright rude to every patron. Our party of 2 were seated quickly even for a busy Saturday down town. It smelled delicious the minute we walked in. We both ordered the clam chowder and a side of garlic bread to share. Our order came out quickly and piping hot. After the first bite I 100% understand why they won world awards 3x. Our waitress was very attentive and refilled our drinks without even having to ask. Lovely atmosphere. The service is good but busy. I've never been here before but I had the clam chowder and it was excellent. I tried a bowl first without the saltine crackers. The pieces of clam are nice sized and tender. I also had the lobster roll with okra and hush puppies. Didn't know that was a nice fried combo. I fall a little bit more in love with Mount Dora every day and places like Tony's Chowder House are the reason why. Although parking is spare, you absolutely want to stop by this small, charming, but EXCELLENT seafood spot near Historic Downtown. I stopped in for lunch today and (luckily) scored a parking spot in the back of the restaurant. I don't know how they do it here with such a tiny kitchen but the food is great. My Connecticut lobster roll was just about perfect with two delicious sides of fries (crunchy and hot) and possibly my new favorite cole slaw. The hush puppies were so good - I could have easily eaten at least four more. Delicious sweet tea to go with my meal and all the food was served on this lovely white plate in the shape of a fish - so cute! My order came out to $30 and my wonderful server (Lisa?) was both efficient and friendly. I was in and out in roughly 30 minutes, if that, full and happy to face the rest of my day. I will absolutely be back to try their cod and salmon and who knows what else because this place is great. FYI - if you're a fan of clam chowder you can buy cans of their award-winning brand here in the restaurant. Also, that bathroom was spotless - which is a good sign in any restaurant. Stopped in to try this place since it already had good reviews. The clam chowder was excellent. I understand why it's won awards. Flavorful with tender pieces of clam. Not too thick or thin. Amongst us we also had a shrimp roll, grilled cod sandwich and blackened shrimp platter. Coleslaw was good. Not too Much mayo. Hush puppies were good--small and perfectly fried. Well, we always loved coming here but they made several changes, and not for the better. Don't order their Super Bowl Clam Chowder. It's the exact same size as their regular bowl, only more expensive. They present it to you in a bowl that is very shallow and wider so you think you are getting more, but you are not. This is fraudulent and very deceiving. Now, moving on to the Seafood platter for two. They got rid of the free salad that always came with it. They cut their scallops in half so that they are super thin and you only get 4 half scallops instead of 5 normal sized ones. They give you pathetic bread filled crab cakes in place of the second piece of fish they used to offer. Their portion of French fries are now half the size. Their hush puppies are super small. What has happened to this place? Plus, when you get your bill and you order ice water, they try to make you feel bad because the receipt now says Free City Water. OMG! Whoever made these changes needs to rethink about what is important to them. Is it worth losing customers over by skimping on these items? We would rather pay more and get quality portions and ingredients. Yes, Tony's Chowder House, we have noticed and we are not coming back anytime soon. read more

The other day my wife and I visited Tony's Chowder House. We used to live in Maine and we know lobster. We had read good reviews and looked forward to sampling their food particularly the lobster rolls. Their restaurant is small with plenty of outdoor seating and a very friendly inside full of interesting decorations. We both ordered a lobster roll with two sides. I had the coleslaw and potato salad and my wife had french fries and coleslaw. All the sides were first rate. I really enjoyed the potato salad and fries. The lobster rolls were tasty but we can tell they were fresh frozen. Tony's is known for their New England style clam chowder. It is very good. Could have used more clams but all in all very tasty. We will definitely return to sample other dishes. read more

Small restaurant in downtown Mt Dora. Parking can be a bit of a challenge. 7 indoor tables and a few outdoor. Server was very slow to acknowledge us (15 minutes) but then service was great. I had the grilled shrimp entree with hush puppies. It was delicious. Sampled the clam chowder and it was excellent. Not a very robust menu and it was $18.99 for 8 shrimp and 7 hush puppies. Met some relatives at Tony's chowder house very small place. Nice decor. But I have to say it's overpriced and the fish was greasy.

This was my first time visiting this Tony's. I have been to the one in Cedar Key since they opened in 2005. They would serve huge portions of chowder. The portion size at this location is much smaller than what I was used to enjoying years ago in Cedar Key, but it tasted just as good. It was quite cold inside in August, so a sweater/jacket is recommended. The service was great and very quick. The rest of my family had fried fish fillets which were bland and not crispy. The fries weren't great either. One of my daughters had the grilled shrimp, which were beautifully cleaned and cooked, but too heavily seasoned for her to enjoy. The staff is very friendly and attentive. They will walk you through the offerings and even help with your shopping needs. After learning it was our first visit, we were given a sample of the clam chowder. The food is very good, the specialty clam chowder is outstanding and the prices are reasonable.
