The menu is not meant to be too ambitious. Ever since Covid every restaurant struggles with kitchen help and wait staff. Sides to choose from are fried okra, potato salad, fries & coleslaw. The seafood platter for 2 is $42.99 and can be ordered grilled, blackened or fried. The chowder was undoubtedly amazing, but the service was sub par, the server we had was rude and was clearly not keen on answering our questions, but we gave them the benefit of the doubt and still stayed and ordered. I got the lobster roll and was really excited to try it but it tasted like it was dead for days before it was cooked. The serving was really small and the lobster felt so grainy and crumbled like feta cheese inside my mouth which is definitely not how lobsters should be. When we voiced our concern, the manager did not take accountability at all. They just asked us to leave after we finish with the promise of a comp meal and did not even let us order anything anymore. The manager was very rude and aggressive about it, plus made it seem like it's our fault by saying that we shouldn't have shared the chowder which was never communicated to us prior. We left without finishing our food (comp or not) given it was inedible, and it was just such a huge waste. Hopefully you guys improve on both food quality and service. read more

Mount Dora has many great places to eat but this one is a hidden gem. It's located just one block north of Donnelly Park in Downtown Mount Dora. The Chowder House is in a cute little house turned into a restaurant. You would literally drive by and miss the place if you were not intentionally looking for it. There is one spot and one handicap stop in front of the building. Grab any street parking by the building. Pro tip: the parking by the restaurant is not hourly so you can walk down to the cute shops downtown and not worry about having to move your car. When you get into the restaurant they lean heavily into the sea captain theme. It's kitsch, but cute! Food now... You get a free sample of clam chowder when you sit down. It's nice if you are particular about chowder or you want to try the other food but want a taste of chowder. I got the chowder and my dad got the premium shrimp basket. Chowder: has bacon, potatoes, and big pieces of clam. It is very flavorful and leans a bit more into the salty part of the palette. I like the bacon for flavor, however, sometimes you can get a big piece that is limp in the chowder. The clam is always on point with pieces in every bite. I always get the bowl and feel that is enough for a nice afternoon lunch before going shopping or walking around. premium shrimp basket: there were over 10 jumbo butterflied shrimp. They were very lightly dusted with breading which is how we like our seafood. You get two hushpuppies that were overly fried and hard to eat, but I'm guessing it's because of the lunch rush when we were there. Finally, you get a side. My dad got the coleslaw which has a ting of vinegar. It is the perfect complement to heavy fried food. I think I might have had the best fish sandwich I ever had. I KNOW I had the best clam chowder I ever had. when we walked into Tony's I felt immediately at home at the cozy/nautical/nostalgic place. Ut was fun just walking around checking out the stuff on the walls. Bill was our server and he was outstanding and a really nice guy. He also gave us some good info about the area. When you're first seated you're treated to a "chowder shooter" which convinced me to order a bowl with my grilled fish sandwich. The sandwich had a healthy portion of delicious fish on a bun with lettuce tomato's and pickles. Bill said that they get their fish from the north Atlantic. Our visit started off by being greeted by the sweetest waitress/hostess (?), just a beautiful spirit who sat us outside under the roofline so we could watch the rain. Naturally we ordered 2 bowls of chowder and a side of fried okra. We were also given hush puppies with a Shrimp and fish po'boy we shared. Everything was absolutely delicious!! I didnt think I would like a po'boy....Im not a big shrimp eater, but spitting the sandwich was the perfect amount and very enjoyable! This is an excellent seafood lunch spot. Make sure you check the hours before you go. The server made sure to tell us that everything is made fresh to order. The decor is cute, nautical, and homey. Space is limited, so be prepared to sit outside if you can't get a table indoors. The manager came by multiple times to make sure everything was good. Very attentive staff. The shrimp skewer lunch basket was very good. The blackened Seafood platter for two was a great portion and cooked perfectly. The only gripes I have are that you can't mix and match fried/grilled/blackened with the fish, scallops, and shrimp. You can only choose one cooking style for all of it. Everything was cooked perfectly and the scallops were delicious. However, as a crab cake lover, the crab cakes did not meet my expectations. I couldn't pinpoint what was off, maybe one of the seasonings, but they were my least favorite. The lobster bisque was good; just don't expect large chunks of lobster. We happened to pass by and notice a small sign that said "$6.99 lunch" which definitely peeked my interest. When we entered there was no one in the host area, so I felt they may be understaffed. It took a few minutes to be seated and it was thoughtful of them to let us know there were a few parties ahead of us and since everything is made to order, if we were in a rush then we were in the wrong place. We started off with a bowl of the infamous award-winning clam chowder....which we agreed may have been the best we've ever had. We also decided on the $6.99 Shrimp skewer lunch special with coleslaw and the slightly uncharged $8.99 popcorn shrimp with fries special. Both meals are small portions but suffice. Everything tasted good and I really had no complaints. The restaurant decor is adorable and has a old school nautical vibe. It's a small place which can fill up quickly.
