We were in Mt. Dora for their annual fall craft fair (it's HUGE!) and decided to try to get into Las Palmas for lunch even though it was super crowded. Since there was only two of us, we were promptly seated at a 2-top outside. I guess most other people had larger parties. Whew! And sitting outside with all the foot traffic, we got to people watch a lot. :) For lunch, we ordered both the Garlic Cuban Sandwich and Pork Sandwich to share. The Cuban sandwich was good, but the Pork Sandwich was freakin' amazing. The shredded pork was so flavorful and the crusty bread it came on was so delicious, too. I would definitely get that again. And the seasoned fries that came with them were fresh and hot. It was a great experience on such a busy day for Downtown Mt. Dora. Touristing in Florida, heard of the restaurant as a very positive welcoming attitude! when a table of 7 and myself went to eat, one of the guests were denied service for having 8 oz of Mac and cheese from home. Fabulous; the food, the service, the decor and the atmosphere. We were driving from Tampa to Jacksonville and stopped to see a friend who lives in the area and have lunch. Walking around the quaint area to get to the restaurant was so enjoyable. We were greeted and seated immediately and the hostess took our drink orders. The menu is extensive and making a decision is difficult. We ordered some bread which came with 3 dipping sauces and the bread alone could have easily been a meal. It was difficult to stop eating, but the entrees were out quickly and forced me to stop. Our entrees were a Cuban, a steak dish and a pork dish. Everything was delicious. Oh Em Geee!!! So I stumbled upon Las Palmas as my friends and I decided to check out Mount Dora. The staff was very friendly and was seated pretty quickly, the restaurant was full so happy we didn't have to wait too long. For appetizer I tried the chicken soup and it was very flavorful and full of veggies and chicken. For my entree I wanted to try the Ropa Veija and the steak sandwich. Both was sooo good. The Roma veija was cooked with tasty spices and melt in your mouth tenderness. The sandwich was a bit dry but the fries were amazing! I can't recommend. Mostly because we stopped here for margaritas and they were the worst margaritas I've ever had. We had to send our carafe back because it had red pulp stuck to the side of it from a past sangria. Eww. We had ordered food before our margaritas came or we would have left. I just couldn't stick them with an order for 4...although our server didn't seem to care about the tables outside anyway. :-/ As it turned out, the flank steak with chimichurri sauce was decent as were the black beans and rice. I ordered a side of yuca and I liked them too. One friend ordered the tamales and again-not the best. The other 2 ordered the pulled pork salad and they were happy, which is why I gave the restaurant 3 stars overall. The bathrooms were dirty and had no toilet paper, so paper towels were my only choice. That's awful. Today I my wife and friend venture to this historic location of Mount Dora and noticed this restaurant. For starters, beautiful Cuban decor inside. I tried the chicken mofongo and it was rich in flavors. My wife had the vaca steak pieces with Moro rice, sweet plantains and fried yuca. Absolutely delicious she loved it so much that she could not finish and took home to finish later. By buddy had the shrimp Mofongo and he said the rich garlic sauce, large shrimps and squash plantains were the best he ever had in a long time. Folks! Came here with my family that was visiting from out of town. We planned on stopping to eat here and then explore the rest of mt Dora. What was suppose to be a quick bite to eat, turned into a 3 HOUR long lunch because the service and food took so long and it wasn't even busy. Once we finally got our food, half of it was cold and tasteless. After talking to the waitress about how disappointed we were, she told me she completely understood and would get her manager to take some of our food off our check. She came back and told us that her manager wouldn't come talk to us and told us to just not tip her, our server. I was a server before so I would never do that but ??? Ordered two iced teas (why don't restaurants/serve staff put enough ice in "iced tea"?). If I'm ordering iced tea - I want ice! We had the "Havana" salad and "classic Cuban". The salad would've been pretty good if they didn't dump sooo much black bean juice onto the salad! It completely ruined the little bit of lettuce I received. The shredded pork was outstanding. The salad was more like a "pork & bean" bowl than salad. And truly if that's what I had wanted - would've ordered that. The "classic Cuban" could've been great BUT they over mustard it and we like mustard. There was so much that if you order it - get mustard on the side. Service was interesting... our server had the personality of a dish towel however, he was attentive and efficient. It was strange having someone so lacking in personality be so adept at serving. Cuban food is nothing new to my fiance and I. I grew up in South Florida and we both live in Tampa now. Common knowledge says the Cuban sandwich was invented here in Tampa and are now a common staple in our diets. At least they are in ours. Looking for dinner in Mount Dora is both easy and difficult. Our list of places to go to wasn't all that long and we had done them all already. Las Palmas seemed about as good as any and was near where we parked so we stopped in. We didn't have to wait long for a table but the place was pretty busy. Our server was around pretty quick and we ordered a sangria pitcher to drink. We also ordered croquettes as an appetizer. For dinner, my fiance had a salad, which I think was the Havana Salad. It had roast pork in it. All their salads come in house made tortilla bowls and come with a really good dressing. I ordered a garlic Cuban. This was a traditional Cuban sandwich with garlic olive oil on it. Needless to say, we enjoyed the food. It was quick, fresh, tasty and filling. Our server was great and attentive. They even have a convenient mobile payment system that you can use right at the table. The only downside I found in this place was the restroom. It looked like it was under construction, never finished and then someone decided to tear it down again. It served its purpose. Las Palmas is located on Donnelly st in downtown Mt Dora. You can't miss it as there's lots of shops, cafe's, and other restaurants within walking distance. Personally, I find their prices to be fair. I got the fish sandwich with a side of white rice and black beans which you pay 1.50 extra for. Normally it comes with fries. The beans and rice were great. They arrived really hot and flavorful, which hit the spot on this particularly cold day. I also asked for a side of their fried yucca that came with a garlic sauce. It was good too. Amongst some of the other dishes that were brought out for our table were the chicken sandwich with red beans and yellow rice. The garlic shrimp appetizer, and the avocado salad. Everything we got was very good all except the avocado salad. You know when you put a ripe avocado in the fridge, and it's in there for a really long time and starts to get watery, and flavorless? That's what happened here. I wouldn't order the salad again. I also think it would be a good idea if they offered dairy free alternatives for coffee other than whole milk, otherwise everything was great and I'd definitely eat here again. read more

Spent the day in Mount Dora. It was a beautiful day. Suchh HH a quaint little gem in Florida. Not your typical commercial attraction. But a really little respite from traffic that is central Florida. Las Palmas was our choice for an early dinner and it did not disappoint. Genuine Latin cuisine. Our party of six enjoyed Mofongo, ropa vieja, empanadas, rellenos de papa, chuletas con arroz y abachuelas. Everything was beyond delicious and we rolled out of there with full bellies!!! We decided to drive down to Mt. Dora to visit my husband's family. Having not been to the area for almost a decade, I was excited! Las Palmas was so conveniently located downtown - right next to some extra parking. Despite having nine people in our party, our table was ready quickly. Because it was a cool evening, we wanted to sit outside, so they set up a few tables in front of the restaurant for us. Sitting outdoors in Mt. Dora is spectacular, especially with the cooler weather. The drink specials were a pleasant surprise. Every day they have a happy hour, offering margaritas, mojitos, and rum punch for two for one. Everyone loved trying all kinds of drinks together. Their wine prices were reasonable as well. Cocktail options were extensive, and everyone could find something they liked. Everyone left satisfied after ordering a variety of dishes. The portions were large and the quality shined through. I ordered the pechuga a la parilla with aroz con gandules, red beans, and sweet plantains. By the end of dinner, I was overstuffed and delighted. We were all too full for dessert. We like some Cuban food every so often, so we stopped at this location. It seemed to be popular, busy and food we had seen from the street looked interesting. We sat down with our fries from the Salted Fry while we waited for our waitress. This took a while, but they were busy. Finally, the waitress showed up and said she'd be happy to help us. She took our drink orders and food orders at the same time. She left and didn't return with our drinks or food for that matter. Finally, after a 45 minute wait a bus boy showed up with our food. We told him we never got our drinks or seen the waitress since taking our order. He said he's taking care of it and soon returned with our drinks. I believe his name was Gilberto (or close to that, he was great); he said the bartender was busy, so he got the drinks for us by himself. Soon after the waitress appeared and said oh, I see you got your food. We asked for some hot sauce and condiments, she said she'd be back with them. NOT. So just as we were finishing, she finally came around, so we asked for to go boxes. The entrees looked delicious and tasted delicious; was rice, veggies, peppers, onions etc. with bean soup or sauce to pour over. I had a Garlic Cuban hot sandwich, and it was awesome and hot. We got to go boxes because we had a wedding to get to. She burned up a lot of our free time we could have used going around the city. Great service!! We sat at the bar and had no idea what to get ! Our bartender made fantastic recommendations and made a MEAN mojito. The drinks here are really fantastic and are 2 for 1!! You can't beat that! They offer specials on everything from specialty cocktails to beer- so there is something for everyone. I have to be honest though. While the drinks were AMAZING, the food was lacking. There was really no flavor to anything except the tostones with queso. That I would highly recommend. Why 2 stars? The horrid service! So my friend and I had to go to Orlando for a conference but decided to make a stop in Mount Dora because she bragged about what a beautiful town it was and I wanted to tour it but those plans changed once I came here. So it was busy but we were seated right away. However, for 15 minutes no one acknowledged us. By the way we were seated right by the entrance door which was awkward and in the way. On the stool where my friend was sitting there were rugs rolled up next to her. Many workers walked by us with no type of acknowledgement...including our waitress. So finally after my friend addressed w the hostess twice about getting our waiter so we can at least get water's finally ours came to our table but with the excuse that she didn't see us and no one told her we were here. She walked past us and usually waiters know the tables they're in charge of and we're right by the door...how did she "not see us"? So finally we ordered and app and waters. The waters took asking her 3 times before we got them and the app was supposed to be free via a special yelp coupon. She wanted to take my phone and show it to the manager but after replacing my screen for $300 I wasn't letting it out of my site. I asked if she could bring the manager to the table instead and she said yes but that never happened. Shocking. So we got our water and eventually waters but an hour after we had been seated we never got our meals. My friend and I ordered Morongo and ropa vieja. Nothing complicated or time consuming. I realized that we hadn't gotten our food and how long it had been when I noticed 2 other tables that were seated after we were seated have their meals. In fact one table got there about 20 minutes after we were seated got their food and were able to pay their bill and leave before we even got our food so by that point we were angry. Personally I would have just walked out of the restaurant and not had paid but my friend at that point was so angry because she had been to this restaurant many times before and always had good experiences and she brings me and The service was horrible and she was livid. She asked to see the manager and the hostess told her the manager was waiting tables and was unavailable which even if that's the case in a sensituation like that you should still bring the manager over. I basically just told the hostess that if the food had not been made to just forget about it we'll leave but my friend wanted to eat the food and by that point after venting our waitress came back and again and the excuses our waitress told us that unfortunately my dish The mofongo was taking a long time because the cooks had to peel the plantains and fry them. I've had that dish many times before and I know how to cook plantains and it does not take very long to peel nor does it take long to fry. To me the reason I wanted to just walk out and leave was because the vibe that I got from the hostess and the waitress was that they didn't care and nothing was going to be resolved and at that point I didn't want to eat their food. Also the hostess told us that the manager was waiting tables but by that point our waitress told us that the manager wasn't there so during our stay we heard 3 different stories about where the manager was. I will say when we finally got our food it was really good and had we had maybe a little better experience or maybe if we work fed lies about why our meals took forever I would have given this place at least 4 stars. At the end we paid full price, the appetizer wasn't free because our waitress didn't know how to comp us for it and the manager wasn't there to see the coupon which at that point The screen had lapse and I couldn't read check in period overall I would never return back to this place purely based on the service and I see that some recent reviews are also giving low stars for service so I sincerely hope that the manager or owner reads this and decides to improve that in order to keep good business coming to his restaurant. read more

Came into the cute little town of Mount Dora for a wedding. This specific area is really cute! Very touristy. After the wedding we came here for dinner. We had a party of 16. Everyone was squeezed in at the table, so I would not recommend this place for very large groups unless you all don't mind sitting at different tables. The place is very cute. Our hostess was very nice. The food only took about 20 minutes or so. We did call in to let them know ahead of time what everyone will be ordering. Everything looked amazing! It was fresh. I had the pernil (roasted pork) with arroz con gandules which is my favorite Cuban dish. It was really good! My only complaint is that the pork was a little salty. I had plantain chips for an appetizer and those were delicious! They fry them fresh so they were nice and hot! The garlic dip that comes with it was so good I could of drank it! Ha! I love garlic that much. Overall we all had an amazing time! The food was great, the setting was very relaxing. I would come back to eat here if ever in mount dora again in the future. Me and my mom came back the next day to explore this area. There are quite a few restaurants and little shops around as well as the historic hotels you can stay at.
