I believe this is the first malatang restaurant in the Peninsula area. My friend and I came by on a Wednesday around 5:30pm. Restaurant started to fill up around 6pm. We decided to order the malatang and chose our own toppings. Be mindful here - the more you add, the more pricey it gets! I added: Fatty Beef Spam Pea sprouts Tofu skin Sweet potato noodles My bowl came out to be around $25! They also ran out of enoki mushrooms so that was a bummer. The broth is very tasty but soooo spicy!!! Even when I chose the lightest spicy option... it didn't have too much chili oil on top so they must put some kind of peppers inside the broth. Went for Breakfast Food - 5/5. Rice ball was simple with the doughnut, pork floss, and rice combo forming a fun texture. The salty and umami flavors of the pork floss carried through every bite. Three fresh bun had good texture on the dough and were filled with chives and eggs. It was a light flavor that is suited for breakfast, but I would've preferred a stronger taste in the filling. The Chinese chive pocket had the same filling as the three fresh bun, but with a crispy dough instead of steamed. The texture was fun and the fried flavor paired better with the light flavors of the filling. The millet congee felt very soothing and nourishing with its plainness. The side dishes added a lot of flavor with the meat dish being slightly pickled and umami. The peanuts tasted a bit fermented, which gave it a nice funk to add to the plain congee. The noodles had good bite to them and the scallion sauce was just the right amount of salty and aromatic for this simple dish. The blackened scallions added a flavor boost and the fresh scallions added a refreshing crunch. Service - 4/5. Fast and friendly service. Value - 5/5. The breakfast sets are either $10 or $11 each. The savings can really vary from $1 to $5, so if you like the options in the set, it is a great deal. We had 2 handymen helping out with some work in the house, so I treated them to HK style bbq. We tried Laka's soy sauce and tea chicken and bbq pork (cha siu). You can tell this chicken is super fresh and free range by the great chicken taste and firm texture. Most supermarket chickens are soft and mushy, not to mention flavorless. The soy sauce added great flavor, but we really didn't get any tea taste or aroma. Cha siu is perfectly glazed and charred on the edges. When we're in the milbrae area looking for food we always see this place. We look and the menu and the food always looked good. We finally went to day and it was pretty good. The service was good. The menu was a little confusing when ordering your custom noodle soup. Now to the food. I ordered Knife Cut Noodles with Spicy Meat Sauce. My girlfriend ordered a custom bowl of noodles with Knife Cut Noodles, Laksa Soup Base, with Enoki Mushrooms and Beef Brisket. We also ordered Mala Beef cartilage and Cucumber salad to cut the spicy a little bit for the spicy food we got. The Knife Cut Noodles with Spicy Meat Sauce was amazing. The sauce was amazing the slice level was perfect. The noodles were springy not to springy which I like sadly, but it was delicious. I wish it had a little bit more noodles though because I still had a little sauce left. The noodles also came with a little bowl of soup that helped cut the spice. So it was a good meal. The custom Noodle Bowl my girlfriend got was alright. Like in other reviews stating the soup base was a little bland this was not different in that regard. But the Knife Cut Noodles had a good texture. The ingredients Enoki Mushroom and the beef brisket wete pretty solid. The Mala Beef Cartilage was amazing. Sliced thin. The sauce was addicting the price was a little tough, but the Cucumber salad we got was a good pairing with it. Since it was refreshing. There are a lot of broth and Noodle combinations you can get here, but in just got the standard beef noodle soup. It came with a variety of beef cuts. Even some tasty tripe. Laka Spicy has been our go to place for authentic Northern Chinese noodles, and we're glad to learn that they just added Chinese breakfast service, which includes both Hong Kong style and Shanghainese style dishes in their breakfast sets. We definitely like their authentic Hong Kong milk tea and Chinese donuts, which seem to be freshly made rather than refried from frozen pre-made donuts like most other places. They used to be called Noodles & Things, still the same owners I believe. I saw it was a new noodle place or I thought and decided to stop in. The menu style is the same, you can order some of their signatures or build your own. They have other menu items other than noodle soup as well. I got the chui chow noodles and it was delicious! Broth was deep, rich, tangy and peppery. I love the idea of building my own noodles, reminds me of Hong Kong cart noodles. The only thing I will never order is the Mala beef tendon. I order not too spicy but still they made it very spicy. I like spicy but they made it too much. And that is not the tendon I expect. I came here at around 7pm on a Sunday evening and there were plenty of seats open! The thing I loved most about this restaurant was that although there is a build-your-own noodle bowl option, you can actually customize their signature noodle bowls as well!! I was on the fence about ordering the c08 pickled string beans and ground pork because I wanted knife cut noodles instead and they were happy to accommodate. Unfortunately, a surprising disappointment with the c08 is the ratio of soup to everything else. There was WAY too much soup and barely any pork and pickled beans. We came here for a quick dinner. Super easy location right I'm downtown Millbrae, behind Safeway. Street parking available and an easy walk from the Safeway shopping area. Plenty of seats available and it was decorated very simply. Service was very fast and friendly. We picked what we wanted off of their dry erase menu and it came out within minutes. I ordered the very spicy Laka broth with ramen noodles and I wasn't disappointed. Nice kick to the soup and the ramen noodles were very chewy. Not soggy at all and not "instant noodle" tasting. Hubby ordered their special and said the broth was very clean and light tasting, not greasy at all. They have a good variety of add ons for their soup/noodle dishes. We've been eating at this place for years. At first it was kinda meh but they've really improved. The barbecue char siu is really good and tender so I advise that, and they also have a dish called "Knife Cut Noodles with Spicy Sauce" that's been removed from the menu but they still make that's genuinely delicious; if you ask about it they'll make it for you.
