I am very unhappy with the service at this store. I cam to get a replacement for a flood light. I brought the old light to make sure the replacement will fit and provide the same illumination. The first employee when asked for directions just waved his hand and said "the back of the store". I went there and asked the second employee specifically about the size and the light color. He was a a few steps from the aisle but did not bother to find exactly what I wanted. He just said, "They are all the same on this shelf". Well, they were not - I got a wrong size because I trusted. I should have asked to bring me one and to check against my old one. The lesson learned - do not do business there. read more

Recently my dolly had a flat so I wheeled it into Ace Hardware to find a new tire to fit it. Anyway, the man tells me he thinks my tire is fine and recommends a way to fix the flat for free (which I did). He could of just sold me something I didn't need, to get money out of me, but was HONEST and helpful instead. What more could a customer ask for? read more

The worst Ace hardware ever! The staff was very rude. We went there specifically for their great selection of wind toys. However, they were way overpriced and then when I asked 3 staff members if they had any wrapped in the back they all said something different. Finally a grumpy old man at the "help desk" rudely said "all we have is what's out there." Why would anyone pay $50 for a wind toy that's already been used/out in the elements? I made a special trip out to Lafayette and totally regret it. I will never be back. I'm sure I can find what I wanted on Amazon. read more

We are local and believe in supporting local business where possible. We do buy some things at Ace, and understand that they have to be a tad more expensive than HD and Lowes, but sometimes they are so overpriced it gets annoying. Case in point...needed to buy a couple of garbage cans. Saw they were 27 at Ace. Amazon/Wmt/Lowes had them for 22 but I was getting some other stuff at Ace so decided to get them as well. But guess what they did...From the manufacturer these cans come one way--with the lid. Everywhere else sells them with the lid. Not here...they separate the lid and give it a different item number and then charge you for just the lid...So the $5 price difference becomes $13...Not cool. So I'll keep buying some things there when it makes sense, but understand that in many cases you are paying a very large premium. Left me with a not happy feeling about the place unfortunately. Crystal, the assistant manager, is worth going to this store. She has talked thru some problems, e.g. how to repair my Miata visor that I was told would cost $500 with parts and labor. After going back and forth, we used some magnets and some special silicone to repair for about $15! Just went there and she did it again to repair my sump pump. Went in yesterday to get some advice on how to repair a leaking pool pipe under my deck. I showed Jim and David some photos and explained the difficulty in reaching the pipe. They spent 15 minutes brainstorming a solution that appears will be quite simple for me to execute. I left with the supplies I needed and instructions on how to use them. Horrible customer experience and Loyalty program... I'd give a zero if I could after this experience, none of the positive will outweigh this. Need to voice out a horrible customer experience/loyalty program you folks have. I had a coupon for $3.00 off propane refill/exchange without an expiration date and the store refused it and stated the exp. was on the other portion of the coupon sheet and not on the coupon itself, well i do not have that other portion as the coupon is all i wanted to keep. Who does that? Do you know of any coupons out there that have the exp. not on the coupon itself? Anyhow, I spoke to both Managers (David and David) and they were like "huh", "oh yeah but it expired"! How does a coupon w/o an expiration date expire? Someone on your loyalty program screwed up, not the consumers fault and they left me feeling really sour. Honestly, they should have honored the coupon plus they sucked me into the propane exchange program which is sucking money from my pocket... Through necessity I was forced to disassemble my Wahl animal clippers, and because the nasty thing took an engineer to reassemble, I tried Lafayette Ace. I was met at the door by a friendly man who took the item to the back where he studiously began to look it over and patiently deliberate what part belonged where. It wasn't easy, and when I offered to allow him to return to the floor, he made it clear I wouldn't go home without a solution. Within a period of time, another employee joined him with a similar persistent drive to resolve the dilemma. I was stunned by their tenacity to get the job done - the tiny parts were miserable to construe. These two men stayed with it for well into thirty minutes or more, keeping their good natures and making me feel like a special customer. Unbelieveably, they were able to get the miserable thing back into perfect working order. Seriously, I was impressed. In spite of my not making a purchase that day, they handed me the clippers with a smile and refused my offer of cash for their time. I needed a slider kit with lift so I could move some heavy items and many of the Ace stores were showing they were available to pick up in store but it turned out they really weren't there and would have to be ordered from the warehouse (and I wouldn't be able to get them until Wed.) I was not happy... I wanted to do my project before the weekend was over; it was really important. David searched for the product number on the Internet and then picked up the phone and called around to other Ace stores until he found one that had the kit in its inventory. Then, he called me back within an hour and told me where I could go pick it up right away! Because of his caring and hard work, I was able to get the kit and get my project finished as I'd hoped. David really went above and beyond for me and I really appreciate it. THAT was FIVE STAR service!! read more

I concur in numerous other reviews stating that this store has a pretty decent assortment of hardware inventory, good for a grab in a pinch when time is a priority. But the cost of items vs. the large home centers is almost always at a significant premium. Advice is better for the newbs, however, and service is much more prompt as well if that is what you need. Love hardware stores. Ace in Lafayette is a fine exemplar. Minus the Ace name, it's a complete throwback to the anchoring institutions that defined many an American neighborhood. Incredibly helpful staff- even the younger folks will go the extra mile. IMHO service always trumps size or selection as in the more distant Big Box places. Only reason this frequent shopper won't rate it 5 stars is their higher prices for some items. Parking can be tight during weekend peaks. But the service sure beats Walnut Crk or Home Dpot. read more

Had previously purchased all-in-one grass sead, not the ace brand. Worked great. Went back on 3/2/16, there was a sale on the ace brand all-in-one grass seed. Spoke to two employees at the time of purchase to ask them their opinion on the ace brand of grass seed. They said they didn't know because I use the other brand that I had previously purchased, but since it was on sale why not try it and if it doesn't work bring the receipt back. Because it's an ace brand they say they stick behind their product. I question because I obviously would not have the product since it's grass seed, they said not to worry. Jump to today where the sea did not take, brought the receipt back and was now told since I did not have the bag or the product I cannot get a refund. I explained that I just wanted to purchase a bag of the previous seed that I had used and and then I have the receipt, as I would as it was explained to me was all I need to bring back, since I know my purchase was grassy that is now on the lawn and not growing. They refused to give me an exchange or return anything. read more

I've waited at the "customer service" desk for over 5 minutes on multiple occasions. I like this store as far as hardware stores go, but I sure miss my wonderful one, Eames, that closed recently in Pleasant Hill. The owner retired. I would rather support independent businesses whose employees are creative thinkers.Anyway, I was very upset this morning when I tried to return an ACE item and they would not take it. I had bought it in Alamo while taking a class out that way but I live in Pleasant Hill and go to Lafayette or PH to ACE now that Eames is closed. I do not like that you have to go back to where you bought the item. That is just not good business. I know they are individually owned but they are all run by a corporate office I am sure and they should all take all the ACE products back. I would shop here again. But I will not buy something I think I have to return as I would probably want to go to Pleasant Hill. I sure do not like what is happening with businesses these days. It is certainly not geared toward the customer. Oh, and the Alamo hardware has a lovely kitchen store with cooking classes,etc. Seems the other ACE stores do not find it important to cater to those who enjoy cooking....... read more
