I have been meaning to write a review for Ladybird bakery for the longest time. This bakery makes the best cake ever in existence. Every year on my birthday, my husband takes the hour and a half trip to the bakery for their seasonal pink velvet cake. The trip is well worth it! The texture of the cake is very dense and the cream cheese frosting is very rich and decadent, the way a cake should be in my opinion. This is cake is composed perfectly! The strawberry filling and cream cheese blend together to create a slight tartiness and delicate balance of flavors with the right amount of sweetness. Oddly enough, the cake even tastes better with age a few days in the fridge. Needless to say, it is a masterpiece. I prefer this cake over any dessert. read more

Strolling through Prospect Park on a beautiful but scorching day, I realized that Ladybirds commands a spot on gMaps,which can be an ominous sign, but at 4:20 it was not. There are items all scattered about Ladybird, in a way where you'll place your order and notice something on the way out that'll demand you return: well-played, LBB. I skipped the dog biscuits and made sure I checked the price of a tart before not ordering one, skipping over what appeared to be a failed red velvet cake serving as samples on the counter (impossible to actually take w/o using your hands=awk). There's no debit minimum and the CC threshold is $10, so I keyed in my PIN for a 60-cent ginger shortbread cookie (nice ginger tidbits) and a $2.25 cherry coconut muffin (alright heated up: cherries studded the not dry but not overly moist muffin, and almost or sometimes- completely-burnt/charred pieces of shredded coconut on top; it was smaller than initially thought but prices mirrored that disparity). read more

I have passed by Ladybird Bakery several times, and have been dying to to try their red velvet cupcake. It was a nice size and the frosting is yummy but the cupcake itself was dry and boring. I threw it away. Very disappointing. Tried the coconut creme tart, which was VERY yummy! Never had this particular tart before anywhere else so cannot compare but it was very flavorful and fresh. Amazing cupcakes, cakes and tarts (of various sizes). Their Red Velvet cupcake/cake is really dense, buttery, not too sweet and has the perfect cream-cheese frosting. It's rich without being overwhelming and it doesn't leave artificial sugary aftertaste so many other Red Velvets do. It's really the best in New York in my opinion, and I have sampled quite a few. Lemon Cloud is tart, sweet,heavenly and in the league of its own, as is the dark and chocolatey Brooklyn Blackout. There is also a variety of muffins, scones and other bakery fare. Their pastry decorations are incredibly pretty. Service can be slow at times, but it's well worth the wait. Coffee is passable, but there are better sources of caffeine in the area. read more

For about the fifth time this year, I ordered custom cakes. As usual, these two were absolutely delicious and beautiful. One was devil's food with chocolate mousse filling and chocolate glaze icing. It was decorated with white flowers and a few green leaves for a bridal lunch. Soooo chocolately. The cake was moist and tender. Excellent. The other cake was lemon with lemon curd filling and strawberry buttercream frosting. The filling was tart, the cake had a balanced wonderful texture. Ladybird Bakery is consistent and worth it! The cupcakes here are my go to treat. Ladybird is what I want for my birthday each year and what I bring for holidays/visits when not able to bake myself. Service leaves a bit to be desired- they are not very friendly, but I'm usually so psyched to be there and to chow down on a vanilla with chocolate frosting cupcake that I'd probably thought about for months before I finally gave in that it doesn't much matter. My husband heard about this gorgeous little bakery from a coworker and decided to try it for my birthday cake. I'm 35 this year and in all my years of birthday cakes, this was absolutely the best cake I have ever had (sorry mom). We had a chocolate cake with buttercream frosting, decorated with the most gorgeous little wildflowers. The cake was so moist and tasty- rich chocolate and really buttery buttercream. When I was finished with my piece, I had a taste in my mouth almost the flavor of an oreo cookie. Yum. The flowers were delicate and beautifully shaped in the most beautiful colors, really beautiful. The price was great- $26 and even though the cake was small (perfect size for my family of 4 with leftovers) I would pay as much again because none of the cake will be thrown away- no waste! We didn't try any of the other treats yet although they all look delicious but if you are looking for a great cake for birthdays or special occasions- this is the place! read more

Besides the very high prices and the peculiar idea of service, only go to this place for your morning coffee or tea if you like being insulted. I used to go there from time to time for morning coffee, because it is in a convenient location. Today, I go in there, and one of the servers is having a loud chat with a customer who's sitting at a table across the restaurant. The other one has her head buried in a book or a cellphone, and so both are totally ignoring me, as I stand here. I try to be Park-Slope patient, but the ignoring just continues, forcing me to eventually have to raise my voice to ask what;s going on. I don't like being pout in the position of having to raise my voice to get service! Then, she notices me and says she thought the other woman was going to serve me! This is the only place I know where they don;t let you put your own sweetener ion the coffee or tea. You have to specify to the bored server what you want! This reminds me of the old-style Brooklyn delis, where you used to get short-shrift service. But it was a lot quicker than this place! And the coffee used to cost only 60 cents! At this place, you have to pay normal outrageous Starbucks prices, but you don't get the Starbucks service and amenities! You do get a free insult, however! read more

I am not an expert in sweets or bakeries, but I would say I know when something is good and this bakery makes an AWESOME strawberry velvet cake with strawberry filling and strawberry cream cheese frosting. We bought it to celebrate my daughters birthday and everyone in our family raved about it. I don't care for overly sweet things or sweets in general, but this cake hit the spot with just the right balance of buttery rich moistness, a balance of fresh from the strawberries and a hint of sweetness. This will be my new place for a cake needed for holidays or special events. The 1st cake I ordered was the Brooklyn Blackout for my mom's bday (I also ordered M&M cookies (crunchy & chewy but could do with out the M&Ms mini cupcakes that my boys loved). The cake just reminded me of home. It smelled awesome lol. The cake is very moist & also decadent; a thin slice is the way to go . A few days I ordered a yellow cake with vanilla pastry cream and chocolate frosting, tri-berry muffin, red velvet cupcake & a slice of banana nut bread. The boys split the cupcake which they liked. The banana bread, which had walnuts, was not overly sweet & really moist; really good. The tri-berry muffin my mom had (I snuck in a nibble lol) & she really liked it. I saw a slice of strawberry, but not sure of the other 2 berries. It was really good. I was afraid it was gonna be heavy & dry lol, but she loved it. And the yellow cake was really good. The pastry cream is really yummy. It's a small place but the customer service is really great. I haven't tried their drinks yet, but so far the cakes got me hooked. read more

I have lived in Park Slope for over 30 Years. This bakery used to be called Faith's, and then two ladies took over and called it Two Red Hens,inheriting some of Faith's recipes. Then one of the ladies opened a Manhattan store by the same name and wanted to expand, and the other stayed behind and renamed the store Lady Bird Bakery. I used to eat one of their scones or muffins every day, until I bought a scale. But seriously, just about anything you buy there is very good, great or fantastic. My favorite muffin is Chunky Apple, and the scone would have to be Blueberry Oatmeal cause it makes you feel healthy. The coffee is good, and it's a cool place to sit if no one is in the corner table and the sun is shining in the window. Only down side, for me is they used to make a Coconut Angel Food cake that is sinful, and I'd order for Christmas Eve, but last time they only had certain special order items and would not make it, so that was a big disappointment, I went with the Brooklyn Blackout that everyone at my family gathering loves also. And there are always boxes of cookies for Christmas, and other holidays, and great ones that they have every day. Another discontinued item, is Cinnamon Buns, on weekends, I am working on getting Mary Louise to do those again. At Easter you can get Hot Cross Buns though. So just go there and see for yourself. You definitely will wish you lived close by. read more

This was one of the worst places ever. The only reason I'm giving it a one star is because there's no option for no stars. We had called on Thursday specifically asking for a Blood red cake covered entirely including the sides with blood red roses to be ready by Saturday. Although it was on short notice but the lady over the phone said they could do it, and we checked three times that it was going to be the entire cake that was covered. On Saturday morning we go and instead we were shown a cake with a few "extra" roses on the top and the surface wasn't even smooth. Being very disappointed we talked to the cashier guy about how this wasn't the cake we had asked for and we definitely NEED it today as it was my friends 21st bday. And the guy kept on insisting that the order instructions only said that we wanted a cake with extra roses on the side. And that there was nothing he could do about it and also because we needed to order on Wednesday, like one day earlier. However we only made the order based on the fact they said they could do it on short notice. He then called out the manager woman who with a horrible attitude said "well if u don't want this cake you don't have to take it, it's a perfectly fine cake if you wanted a specific cake you need to send us a picture." Ok fine, they never asked for a picture, it's quite a simple request, a blood red cake covered entirely with blood red roses. With $15 extra she says she could cover the top with roses now for us but not the side because "we never do the sides. It can't be done." We also did not like or want the small green leaves on the cake and asked for those to be removed and the manager said she will redo the cake for $25 more. And then she then continues to put the blame on us for not giving them enough time and not taking the "perfectly fine" cake etc, all with a terrible and very angry attitude. Like really this is all our fault? Make a mistake and instead of apologizing, just yell at the customer? Well sorry I wanted a cake? Honestly at this point we had made it clear its not the price that matters, we NEED the CORRECT cake by today. We ended up not taking the cake because she then insisted she can't redo the cake, not even for extra price. Throughout the whole conversation, NOT ONCE was she ever APOLOGETIC for the cake, not once did anyone even MENTION the word SORRY. It was very disappointing not only in the fact that they had made the wrong cake, but also because obviously their work ethics have been thrown down the drain along with their manners. read more

I just LOVE this sweet neighborhood bakery. They have some of the most beautiful and delicious cakes I've ever seen. And their flower decorations are sensational. Their trademark Brooklyn Blackout cake is one of the greatest things I've ever tasted...If you love chocolate you MUST try it. And for breakfast they have a huge spread of muffins, scones, bagels, buttermilk biscuits, and (on the weekends) cinnamon rolls and sticky buns.
