I found the prices to be high for the flavors. I had some of the worst ossa bucca of my life. The chocolate mousse had crystallized sugar within it and tasted like I was eating a lump of gritty chocolate frosting...not creamy at all. Buy a bottle as their house wine is a cheap merlot. read more

This place was so good we went back a second time. It is very romantic, reasonably prices and the staff was attentive and friendly. The first time I ordered short pasta with bacon and truffles and peppered steak. DELICIOUS! My husband thought it was going to be multi-colored bell peppers but it was seasoning peppers and not vegetable peppers. Doesn't matter, still good. We also had the spinach with olives and pine nuts. Yum! The second time we ordered short pasta with bacon and truffles and beef tortellini with truffles. The later was even better then our previous fave of short pasta with bacon. This place brings the quality in almost every area. How's that, you ask? Allow me to elaborate. Environment: the ambiance is incredible... walls lined with wine bottles, comfortable tables, and a low murmur of voices and conversation. This is a relaxing downstairs spot with a true Italian feel. Food: the food was outstanding. I started with some bread a spaghetti dish, then had the fillet with peppercorn sauce and roasted potatoes as my main course. The house wine (white) was on point and I actually took a picture of the label to try to get some back in the US. Perfection. The service: throughout the meal the service was excellent... our waiter was kind, attentive, and made great recommendations. The only issue (and reason for four stars and not five) was when the bill came it didn't seem to add up. First of all, they charged us for the bread that they automatically brought. Not the worst thing on the planet, but seems like not the best practice. Then there was an additional amount on the bill that we did not recognize, to the point where we actually asked our waiter to translate. It turned out that the roasted potatoes (billed as "and what side would you like with your filet?) were not part of the meal either. Both of these unexpected charges, again while not monstrous or a huge issue, left a little bit of a bad taste in my mouth about this place. If something is "extra" it should be noted and it was disaponting to be surprised like that. read more

The best restaurant experience we had in Rome - by far. A hidden jewel right in the middle of tourist trap wasteland between the Pantheon and Piazza Navona. All of the food is good and so are the wine, decor, atmosphere, and service. The staff are so genuine and kind that you can trust them entirely to recommend dishes and daily specials - as well as to suggest glasses and bottles of Italian wine. It helps if you speak a little "restaurant Italian", but they are so good-natured it doesn't matter. This the charming restaurant you were hoping to find in Rome. TIP: it's very difficult to find - literally in an alleyway. If you approach from the eastern side you need to go under a small archway to enter the alley. See photo read more

I'm so glad we found this place on Yelp, because we never would have found it otherwise. It's located off the main roads on a small and narrow side street. We arrived at 8pm and were seated immediately, although we didn't have a reservation. It turned out we were quite lucky, because the place was packed just 30 minutes after we got there. The food didn't take too long to arrive and it was AMAZING! The pasta was perfectly cooked, and the sauces perfectly flavored. We had to try their tiramisù even though we were already full, but it turned out to taste as great as it looked. This restaurant was right round the corner from our hotel and, based on Yelp reviews, we were eager to try it. We managed to snag a table at 7:30 yesterday and had a great meal. The street seating was already full so we sit downstairs which was cozy and well decorated. The staff were super attentive and great with our girls. We had the antipasto to start which was delicious and then the raviolis, the pasta with olive oil and pepper and the pasta with truffles - all of which were delicious too. I had the sea bass and potatoes - the fish as light and tasty and the potatoes were good (although not quite as mind blowing as other reviewers had indicated). For sides we had the spinach and pine nuts (very good) and the asparagus (a little over-cooked). We also followed other recommendations and had a carafe of the house red wine (a local Merlot) which went perfectly with the various meals. Awesome food and service!! We went on a whim after googling what was around our hotel. A couple who arrived just before us took the last table on the patio, so we were seated inside. We actually were grateful for that because the downstairs dining area was so cute and romantic!! Don't worry, there's air conditioning down there! We tried so many pastas in Florence and Rome and while everything was good, nothing was amazing.. so here we were on a pasta mission!! Food was delicious, very good for family style. My friend and I both ordered a meat dish (€15 wine braised veal shank for me) and split a spaghetti vongole (spaghetti with clams for €11). Both dishes were delicious and fresh, well worth their prices. Veal was braised with mirepoix (celery, onions, carrots), so there was a really hearty but earthy savoriness. Veal was succulent and tender. Delicious. Spaghetti vongole was also good. Clams were fresh, pasta seasoned well, plenty of herbs and garlic. Spaghetti also well-cooked. If I had any problems with the meal: there was a mosquito outside, but it only bit once; there was also a few bits of broken shell in the vongole. Ambience was nice -- al fresco dining. Service was friendly. We were able to get seated no problem when our prior reservation fell through because we were running late. Food was so so - we had pastas, seafood and meat. Seafood was a bit briny -- not bad, but not the freshies we've had. Excellent meal on a small, secluded alleyway near the Pantheon and Piazza Navona. The food is quite good, with fresh pastas and a wide variety of second plates as well. I had the tagliatelle with mushrooms and my date had the gnocchi, both of which were great. Not world-shattering, but very solid dishes. For a main we split the osso buco, which was again very tasty (but would pale in comparison to some of the other meat courses we had in Rome later in our trip). As a side we had a roman-style artichoke, which was pretty good. The service here is excellent. Our waiter was a real treat, and that was probably one of the best aspects of the overall experience. The crowd was mainly tourists, but it wasn't as obnoxious as places on Via di Pietra, because this is the only restaurant around, so it's still fairly quiet and intimate. We arrived pretty early for dinner, at around 7:30, so we were able to get out before it started to get too busy. I would definitely come back here for a pasta dish in the future. read more

But couple that with the house-made pasta with bacon, brie and truffles and top the whole thing off with warm and attentive service and you have the makings of a winning restaurant anywhere in the world. We didn't make reservations and arrived when they opened. We got seats pretty promptly but this place does get filled up pretty quickly afterwards. The food is authentic Italian, a bit on the salty side. Pasta is a bit undercooked to my taste but probably to Italian, it's perfect. Dessert is tiramisu and is definitely highlight of the meal. We went to this restaurant based on Yelp reviews. I was not that impressed. The pasta is pre-made, lacks a fresh flavour. We ordered the "grilled" sea bass with potatoes, the gnocchi with basil, mozzarella and Parmesan and the ravioli fungi. The sea bass had no grilled flavour, the potatoes were tasty but very greasy. The ravioli tasted pre-made like the stuff you get at the supermarket....very average and not what I expect to get in Italy! Gnocchi was quite good. Please be aware that they charge 8 Euro for bread even if you don't ask for any. Not sure what all the hype is about! NOT worth a try. read more

We passed this restaurant on our way to eat somewhere else...but there's something about this charming location, tucked away in a surprisingly quiet alley in the Pantheon area that drew us in. We were delighted to sit outside and watch the Roman light change after sunset. The other patrons were mostly non locals, but it was relatively quiet. The staff were friendly and were happy to help us out in English. The menu was fairly long with a lot of options for first, second, and veggie courses. I went with the Cacio e Pepe-- and I have to admit I was a little weary as I have had some VERY good pasta in Rome. But it was DELICIOUS! We also had a fantastic buffala caprese with exceptional cheese. My friends had a seafood pasta and a ravioli. All of us were impressed. This place was so good! One of our best meals in Rome, and even all of Italy. I got the butterfly-cut steak and potatoes, my boyfriend got the lamb (not his favorite), and we shared cacio e pepe as an appetizer. My only regret was choosing to share that pasta and not protecting my steak from my boyfriend's fork. Best Cacio e pepe I had our whole trip. I went here with a group of 4 people and everyone really enjoyed their meal. We enjoyed our meal here so much we ended up coming back a second time before we left. The pasta was all fresh made and very delicious. Om my first visit here I had the Cacio e pepe and it was exactly what it should be simple fresh and very delicious. On my second visit I had the gnocchi with red sauce. I'm certain that these were the best gnocchi that I have ever had, they were soft, buttery and melted in my mouth. Also we had the red table wine which I hope I can in the states because it was very good and paired excellent with the food. I rely on YELP to search out and find the best restaurants in every city we visit. I saw Vecchia Locanda on line and thought the restaurant had a charming and inviting atmosphere. I wrote to them from the USA to request a reservation for 6 on Dec. 26. I asked if we could sit in the cantina at the round table. We arrived and were taken down the stairs to the cantina and seated at our requested table. The room was just as pictured - the walls were lined with wine bottles of all shapes and sizes. Our server, Manuel, was attentive, friendly and made us feel so welcome. We started with drinks: 2 beers, 2 vodkas with lemon, 1/2 liter of house white wine, a liter of house red wine, and 2 large bottles of water. Then we moved on to a mixed salad, 3 Ravioli with different toppings, 2 spaghetti cacio e pepe, roasted potatoes, , 2 orders of Osso Bucco with Porcini Mushrooms, a Filet Mignon Al Barolo (red wine sauce), Tonnarelli with asparagus, shrimp and clams, Tonnarelli with shrimp, arugula and cherry tomatoes, and grilled salmon. In addition, we ordered a bottle of Amarone wine. We ended with profiteroles and chocolate, wild berries with vanilla cream, vanilla cream with Nutella chocolate, chocolate pyramid with mint, and a vanilla cream with strawberry - delicious ways to end a fabulous meal. The total cost for the 6 of us for everything was €289. Jan. 7, 2017 We enjoyed our dinner so much with our friends; we decided to return to Vecchia Locanda. We made an early reservation. We were warmly greeted by Marco and Manuel. We again requested to be seated in the cantina. Because of our early reservation time, we had the cantina to ourselves. It was really quite lovely. Manuel again took excellent care of us. We started with water and a bottle of Frascati wine. My husband had to have the filet mignon again done in the red wine sauce. I enjoyed the veal Marsala, very tender slices of veal in a delectable sauce. We both shared the roasted potatoes and a fresh garden salad. To finish, we shared the vanilla crème with Grand Marnier with dark chocolate sprinkles. The total cost of our meal was €74 plus a €5 tip. read more

However, the decor and environment were awesome - felt so authentic and cozy. The staff were soo nice and accommodating. The menu was in Italian, and they took the time to explain what each dish was. We felt lucky to get a table here for 4, around 10pm on a Wed. The caprese and grilled calamari were fantastic - not the generic preparation we are used to seeing.
