I have been wanting to come here for a while but I would always remember on a day they're closed. We came at 2pm on a Thursday and it was empty. There is plenty of street parking and a small interior with bar seating or tables outside. You order at a counter and the food came out quickly. The queso had a thicker consistency and the chips were light and crunchy. The same chips as torchys. The pico in the queso enhanced the consistency and the flavor of the dip was mild but spiced. I ordered the torts of the month, campenchano. It had two types of meats, beef & pork with pineapple, onion, beans, and avocado. The sandwich was a bit smaller than a typical gotta in my opinion. During our visit to Austin, Texas, my wife and I wanted to grab a quick bite one afternoon and found this amazing Mexican street food. Since we were planning to have a big dinner that evening, we planned to grab just one sandwich to share. We walked into this cozy store with a couple of bar-side seats inside and two outdoor tables. After spending some time staring at the menu, we realized one sandwich wouldn't be enough as we desired to try them all. We ended up ordering two of the recommended sandwiches and street corn. We sat at the bar-side seating where we could watch our meal being prepared. Although the seating was a bit high and tight, the experience of watching the process made it enjoyable. Fellow yelpers, it's been quite a while since I've been so moved as to be spurred to immediate action in writing a review. La Plancha has delivered on the hype reviews and blown me away. I ordered the La Hawaiiana for my first go (La Tejana, you're up next). I'll say I had some misgivings about the sandwich at first glance. For one, I didn't think there was enough meat so it wouldn't be filling enough; for another, it felt rather small in my hands for the price ($15). But I was so very wrong. "Goldilocks" best describes the size of the sandwich and the amount of meat and other ingredients. Any more or less would've been too much or too little. I was definitely not hungry after finishing it, and I would've felt greasy/gross had there been more meat. Ratios are important - and while I may not be qualified to say this after my one and only sandwich, it seems they certainly mind their ratios at La Plancha. Respect. I couldn't help but feel jealous of the folks living in the area around La Plancha. I would be here literally all the time if I lived in the area. But I'll still be frequenting them since I work nearby. Need I really say more after everything else that's been said? Go get you some :) read more

In Austin to drop off daughter for a Girl Scout trip and a friend from Miami was doing same. She wanted Mexican and since I know Miami has crap Mexican, I agreed, even though comjng from Tucson it wasn't as important to me. She found this place on Yelp. Main thing to know - inside is small! Like 6 counter spots and that is it. Good amount of tables outside, but it's outside. With no misters. So if don't want to be outside, it's risky going here. The food was good. Tried La Plancha tonight after somehow stumbling upon it through Yelp! I was really craving a torta! The place itself is super quaint and small be prepared to sit out or do a to-go order. There's also no public bathroom (at least none that was visible to me but maybe there is one apart of the building). I ordered the queso + chips and the hot chick torta. The queso was up there as one of the best quesos ever. Super delicious and creamy. La Hot Chick torta was basically a breaded chicken thigh with buffalo sauce, lettuce and tomatoes. It was very similar to Nashville hot chicken so it to me it personally didn't seem very authentic. But it didn't matter, the taste was really good!! It was a bit too spicy for me and I couldn't handle eating more than half of it sitting there with my nose dripping and sweating haha. La Plancha keeps me coming back. This place does everything right. No frills. Clean. Food comes out quick and is delicious everytime. Bread is perfect. Meat is flavorful. And their Papas Fritas may be the best I've ever had. First fries EVER that taste just as good the next day as leftovers. Idk how they do it. Came here for brunch randomly on Saturday cause I saw an appetizing photo on instagram. I got the brunch tortas and honestly this is the second time I've had tortas and I don't think I'm a fan. I don't think there's anything wrong with the restaurant or the food but it's just not my taste. I should just stay away from tortas in the future. The fries my friend got were amazing though. I ordered the chilaquiles torta and my fiancé got the brunch torta with chorizo. As you can see from the pictures, they do not skimp on the filling and the bread is heavenly. Bc yelp asked me to edit my July review, without "objectionable terms" toward the Austin majority demographic... My review sans my Chicana perspective: Good but EXPENSIVE. Food: - "Torta" bread (bolillo) was fantastic. Great texture and flavor. Just don't expect Telera bread torta or size, it's very much a bolillo. - Flavor leans more Tex mex/Austiny than Mexi street food (I.e the street corn has queso in it - like for chips & queso). It was alright but not quiet authentic (again, very Austin). - Fries were friggin great (but maybe make a combo option or something ?$?). - Salsa verde was legit. Me encantó. - "Street corn" was alright but $7 for about 1/4 of what you could get at any elote truck here. And it was not authentic street elote by any means. - Limonda was pretty sour, it almost tasted like powder was used, which I highly doubt. Don't expect agua fresca flavor. - Chilaquiles Torta was good and tasted as you'd expect. - Tejana was yummy. Fillings very Texmex/austiny apart from the frijol negro. - Also, don't call a bolillo a torta, maybe? Location: -really nice looking spot -no parking lot but ample parking on the side street next to cemetery - not for dine in, a few seats inside, and a few tables outside. Nice tho, if it's not too hot. Prices: - just the Tejana w/fries was NINETEEN bucks. We tried La Plancha this past weekend, going in with a positive attitude because our friends love this place so we wanted to love it too. What it comes down to is this: the food is great and everything else about it sucks. First of all, the only indoor seating is a bar that overlooks their cooking stations. We wanted to sit outside, but the sun was blasting and the umbrellas that they did have weren't even opened. The worst offense, however, was that they only have metal chairs. METAL chairs in 100 degree+ days??! Just WHAT. Then, service. We ordered a few things and asked the guy at the register afterwards: "Anything else you'd recommend that we didn't order?" in a friendly way. And he just gave us the dirtiest look and deadpan said "I don't know" like he was a white walker moonlighting as a torta maker. Gracias! On to the good: the food. It's pretty tasty. The queso is similar to the one from Torchy's, the only decent thing left on their menu after they went completely corporate soulless. The guac was also really nice and we appreciated the inclusion of the pumpkin seeds. We liked the street corn with the flamin' hot cheeto dust, but it was a bit too creamy for us. The tejana torta was positively delicious: the tender meat was super flavorful, the toppings and sauces were all in harmony, and the thing was huge (we split it). While we're not in love with sandwiches that are challenging to eat, we feel like this down-n-dirty one gets a pass. Our daughter's cheese quesadilla was also more impressive with its crispy cheese lacing. Final thoughts: we're not sure that we would go back because the ambience and service put us off, but there's the possibility of takeout. Or maybe trying in winter when the fear of scorching our skin is not so imminent. Three stars for now. read more

Small, typical-Austin-hip-vibe, place making all kinds of great looking tortas and fresh aquas. We had a Jamaica aqua which had the perfect touch of sweetness, a Hawaiana torta with al pastor and pineapple - it was very good, could have used a touch more of spicy to play against the sweet - their most popular, La tejana - which was a generous portion of brisket barbacoa - also very good - and lastly their chilaquiles torta. Only problem with that one is the green salsa made the bread soggy. It's very good, only reason for the knocking stars would be the price point was a little high, $70 after three tortas, some chips and salsa and two aquas. That's a sitdown restaurant price not menu board fast food. read more

When it comes to tex-mex, this is one of the few spots in town that does it right. It's not Americanized Mexican food, but rather Mexican food cooked using Texan ingredients and techniques. When I got there, I first noticed the cute little patio eating area and when I came in, I was greeted by the nice owner. This review is about two months late, but I believe I ordered the brisket torta with fries. All I can say is Delicious with a capital D! can honestly say that I loved it so much! The brisket was tender, so flavorful and I could tell the quality was great.
