It's Berkeley and restaurants are pricy so it was nice to find something where we got a large portion of decent food at a reasonable price. I got the combo plate and enjoyed the pomegranate chicken and the phyllo items, but did not enjoy the levant sandwich which was like a thick pinwheel with little taste on the inside. However, their dips of hummus, baba ghanoush and tabouli were all fresh and flavorful. I normally don't enjoy dolmas but this had lots of good seasonings which I actually liked. For the middle eastern plate, the chicken was very overcooked and the cilicia fillo tasted almost exactly like the food I give my dog. Great spot for Mediterranean in the heart of Elmwood. They have plenty of outdoor seating, both covered and uncovered, on their patio and parklet. I've been obsessed with Moroccan tea since visiting Morocco a few years ago, and La Mediterranee's version hit the spot! It's served in a tall glass mug and is super sweet. The Salad Mediterranee is a great light dish that features a wide range of flavors. We ordered it with a side of pita and scooped up hummus, tabuleh, and baba ghanoush. Sadly, this institution is on a real decline!! In its glory days, in the late 80's and 90's, this was, for me, a frequent spot while in college. It reliably served up great Mediterranean food at reasonable prices. I'd even return throughout the years, whenever my travels brought me back to Berkeley. After a movie at the Rialto, we wandered in, as Hubby loves Mediterranean food and we frequent their Fillmore St. location often. CLEANLINESS: BAD!! When we asked for an extra plate, we received one that literally had heavy dust on it. I can see maybe a dish with a small scrap of food still attached, but I ran my finger across it and could see the dust on my finger and the tracing of my finger on the plate! What is going on here?!? On my way to the restroom after dinner, the terribly cluttered hallway, which was totally visible in public space, really confirmed to me, that I was never coming back here, ever. There were even packages of pita bread stored high up on the shelves. Why aren't these stored inside the kitchen? It looks like they keep these pita breads around for a while, which also explained why the pita bread tasted somewhat stale. Nonetheless, if they're going to store all their crap in the hall, they should keep them in covered cabinets out of public view. Also in the hall were drinking glasses that the staff were using during their shift. Why are these sitting in clear view for all to see?? Again, what is going on here?!? I can clearly see how yucky the public areas and dishes are. The real question is what is going on inside that kitchen? I have an idea, and it's not a place I want my food prepared from! FOOD: Ranges from poor to just average. Do NOT get the chicken kebabs with white meat! It came out COLD, super tough and super dry. We didn't even finish most of it, and didn't even take it with us (so not Chinese). It was truly that inedible! Why eat bad food for the sake of eating?!? It truly was bad! My guess is that the kebabs were made well in advance, and maybe even refrigerated earlier. It wasn't even lukewarm. We definitely didn't want to have it reheated again in any way, since that would have just made that dry meat even drier! The rice that accompanied the entrees had a good flavor, but about half of the grains we're hard, with a texture you would find with rice a couple of days after being refrigerated. Not good. The babaganoush was decent, but small in size. The chicken in filo dough was way overstuffed with too much chicken, which threw off the proportion of crunchy filo to meat filling. The meat filling also had a mushy texture. I suspect they use all the leftover meat, i.e., the dry chicken, lamb etc. for the filling in these. PRICES: They've raised them, and have dropped the quality of their food - a bad inverse relationship. SERVICE: Patient with my inquiries, but overall just perfunctory. Server never returned to check on us, or refill our water, except to present the bill, of course. You'd think that with the increase of Mediterranean restaurants in the Bay Area these days, and particularly the competitive plethora of restaurants all along College Avenue, that they would up their game. This was hands down one of the best meals I've had in Berkeley, and here's why: the tasting platter. If you come here, definitely come on an empty stomach, since the appetizer tasting platter is absolutely wonderful. The perfect blend of mediterranean appetizers, this platter has copious amounts of pita, olives, feta, spanakopitas, dolmas, falafel, quiche, hummus, tabbouli, and so much more! I think this platter offers a much better and tastier experience than most of the mains, so it's definitely a must try. I got the vegetarian platter as well, which still left nothing more to want! I came here on a night out with my sister. Service (even the host) was gracious and efficient. I like that they keep a water jug on your table and are prompt about refilling it. #1 thing here is ttys ambiance. The decor is really charming. Even the street that it's on it fun. The menu has enough variety and yet a lovely cohesion. I had the lamb meatball specialty plate, and it was the favorite of the table. Combo dip appetizer was perfect to share. I don't know how so many people come to this restaurant and leave good reviews. $18 for a plate of one spoon of rice and one drumstick, with a spoon of hummus. The size of the plate was ridiculous and it tasted horrible. You could tell it was microwaved and rushed to the table, the drumstick was all bloody. I ended up not touching my food. In addition, the service is clumsy and mean, the restaurant is dirty and dusty. Honestly, there are dozens of better options in Berkeley. Don't go to this restaurant. I'm utterly dissatisfied and disappointed for the first time in my life. I ordered the Middle Eastern lunch plate $16.25, which comes with one side and 3 choices for the main, and a 2 piece baklava for $2. For my entree I picked dolma, falafel and lamb. For a $20 meal I was very disappointed by the portion size. I got one dolma, 2 falafels and 1 meatball. The saddest part was the amount of rice I got as well - it didn't even cover a quarter of my to-go container. The falafels were also dry (but not crispy). We were wandering the street of Berkeley for a quick bite on a Saturday afternoon. This quirky and cute spot caught my eye and we decided to try it out. I ordered the Soup de Jour in a bowl and Salad ($10.75) while he ordered the Egg Fillo ($10.75). To say the least, we were both disappointed. Maybe we ordered the wrong thing, but we struggled to even eat our food. My soup was this sour chicken noodle base, which I was only able to drink a couple spoonful before giving up. As for the salad, it was very colorful and the cheese and dressing helped me finish half my plate at least. As a warning if you've never had egg fillo before, it's very dry. I don't know if that's how it's meant to be, but it was not good and food was barely touched. At least to end, we had a free, small piece of baklava, which was pretty good.
