My friends and I randomly ended up at La Lanterna di Vittorio late on a Saturday night while visiting New York, and I'm so glad we did. As a vegetarian, I appreciated the variety of vegetarian options. We ordered the bruschetta with added arugula, the vegetarian lasagna flight, flourless chocolate cake, and wine, everything was incredibly flavorful and delicious. The service was excellent, and the atmosphere was so cozy and charming. It was my first time visiting New York from California, and this place gave me that perfect cozy Italian-in-NYC experience I had hoped for. We decided to visit La Lanterna on a very busy Saturday evening in New York. We didn't have reservations, and our party of two turned into four. After having no luck at a few other restaurants, my cousin called La Lanterna, and thankfully they were able to accommodate us! Unfortunately, we were seated right behind the host stand near the entrance, where space was very limited. At first, we didn't mind since they were squeezing us in, but it was disappointing to see larger parties without reservations being seated in the beautiful garden and other dining areas. Aside from the seating, the food was absolutely delicious! We visited La Lanterna during our previous trip to New York and fell in love with their pesto lasagna, so naturally we had to come back for it. It was just as amazing as we remembered! It was OK. We didn't eat at the comedy cellar. We decided to wait to grab a pizza after the show. Our tickets for the show were Monday night, so this was the same night and while it appeared to be very busy, it took a very long time to get a wait staff to help us for our alcohol order and our pizza order. It was OK. I would try to go back again and maybe when I had more time to really take it in. Came here on a monday at 7 PM with a reservation for 6, and were seated out in the garden room. It had ample lighting, but was very loud and difficult to talk. I also disliked that the tables were very small and circular. We ordered two salads, two lasagnas, and a pizza. We found this to be ample for 6 people, and came out to about $23 per person after tip and tax. My favorite bite was the salad with the beets and goat cheese. The bolognese had good tomato flavor, and I liked the pork sausage in the rapini, but I found the lasagnas to be a bit too heavy and cheesey. Food: husband and I split a Canadian bacon and Brie crostini and a carne lasagna flight. Both were delectable and larger portions than expected. We loved this place for many reasons! First of all, the atmosphere is so cozy and there's multiple small rooms over two floors. They do seat you right next to other parties while leaving all the other tables in the room empty which could be a negative for some people. For the food, we shared the meat and vegetarian lasagne flights. I expected there to be clear hits and misses but everyone's favorites were different. Of the meat flight I loved the lamb and pancetta, and of the vegetarian my favorites were the funghi and arrabiatta. We also loved the bruschetta starter. Loves: + Lasagna flights ($26.50) - we split the carne (meat) and mare e monti (sea and mountains) ones, and all were good. So I went here randomly and honestly it felt like one of those little hidden spots you accidentally find and end up loving. The garden patio is such a vibe, super cozy and kind of makes you forget you are still in Manhattan. It feels more like you are sitting in someone's backyard in Italy than a busy city restaurant. The food is straight up comfort Italian. The pizza was thin, fresh, and not greasy at all, more authentic style with good ingredients instead of overloaded toppings. My partner and I were celebrating our one year anniversary and were recommended this spot by a friend. What really sold me is the various lasagna flights that you could get! I could make a reservation online, which included choosing the patio (so quaint) so I was sold. When we arrived, we were promptly seated and had to walk through the restaurant to get to the back patio. The inside restaurant is quite small and you have to walk past the open kitchen to get to the back patio but that wasn't an issue. The back patio was super cute but VERY loud. We were anticipating more of a quiet, romantic vibe but this was not it. There were people drinking after work, some people celebrating on a date night and others that were pre-gaming before going out to the bars. The dress code was varied, and some people were in sweats vs nice dresses and ties. So the vibes were a little weird for me but honestly, the part that really threw me off was how echoey and loud the patio was. I felt like I couldn't hear anything and my partner could barely hear me. But all of that to say, I still enjoyed it. Our server was a typical Italian with very high energy. He came back multiple times to see what we would order and repeat it so quickly that sometimes I wasn't sure I understood what he said (pair that with the loud environment, I was struggling lol) but all in all, still would go back! This spot is not your typical Italian restaurant though as they really are known for pizza and lasagna. We got an appetizer, lasagna flight and another big piece to share, and tiramisu for dessert. Honestly the lasagna was SOOOO good and I still wish I could have more of it today! The mushroom lasagna was probably one of my favorite items along side the traditional bolognese. It was packed on a Friday night but the service was super quick! The lasagna bolognese was tasty but underwhelming. I would've preferred to have another type of pasta than to have lasagna noodles stacked on top of each other with super thin layers of sauce in between. The desserts were pretty disappointing. The cannoli had some sort of citrus in the cream, which had I known before, I would not have ordered it. The flavors were weird and not good. We went here on a Wednesday night thinking it'd be quiet but nope, it was packed! Super lively but also pretty noisy, so just a heads-up if you're going for a date night like we were, it's hard to talk over the crowd. We started with the bruschetta (8/10) which was so fresh and then tried the famous lasagna flight (9/10). They have three options and you can't substitute: carne, vegetarian, and pesce y carne. We picked the vegetarian with the truffle funghi paste as an add on. The food came out fast, and the service was excellent. The lasagna was delicious but very cheesy. This place was super cute! We're lucky to have sat in the back patio, which was a much more spacious and calmer section. The service was good and fast and they had fun cocktails and well-priced wine. The cheese board we had to start was good, only because of those amazing focaccia crisps and the mozzarella (so so delicious). It is like an indoor patio area in the back of the restaurant which is where we sat. The drinks are reasonably priced, for example, $10 for a glass of Chardonnay. The tables were a little small but not that big of a deal. We ordered Bruschetta (the Pomodoro e Basilico), and two types of lasagna. The lasagna bolognese and the lasagna ai Funghi. Both lasagna were very rich and so good. Portion sizes are really good for the price. The bruschetta was recommend by our server and it was a great classic offering. I've come back 2 times since my first review. The staff are great. The place is beautiful and they do a great job decorating every February. I had the cheese pizza last time I was here and it was great. This time I had the potato pizza. It was good but needed something. The person I was with has had all the lasagnas over time and loved them all. The spicy one is spicy. It's a lot of food. The pizzas are big! We've loved their tiramisu. La Lanterna was the perfect middle ground between East/West Village and very close to our concert venue. As a lasagna aficionado, this hit the spot. They're an Italian restaurant that specializes in purely lasagna pasta only. If you're looking for other noodles, look elsewhere! We opted for the carne flights which was such a cool concept. Never had I heard of lasagna flight but this was great. All in all, we had a a great time at this cozy, dimly lit hidden gem and would return in a heartbeat. We went walking around Washington Square Park during the 2026 Winter Storm. Looking for a place for cafe mocha we were so happy La Lanterna was still open after all these years. We went there when we attended NYU in the late 1970s-1980s. I had a panini which was excellent and cafe mocha, which could have been hotter but still tasted good. I came here because a friend recommended it to me and it really impressed me overall! I had a reservation but was still seated about ten minutes late (even with plenty of open seating), which was a little annoying, but thankfully the atmosphere made up for it. I sat in the enclosed (and absolutely adorable) back garden. It was really peaceful and charming. Although it was relaxing, I will say it was just a tiny bit warm even with the air on, which got a little uncomfortable toward the end of my meal. The server was great. They were very friendly and social, gave helpful recommendations, and somehow managed to keep my water glass full the entire time without me even noticing. Service like that always stands out. The menu here is enormous. Not only was there a huge selection of food, but I have never seen a martini menu that extensive! I ended up getting the Mango Tango and Banana martinis and both were dangerously good. The pours were generous and both drinks were so smooth and flavorful they disappeared a little too fast. I was really surprised that the banana one tasted exactly like... bananas. And it had no burn/gross aftertaste! For food, I HAD to do the carne lasagna flight, which is such a clever idea! The bolognese was pretty standard, the rapini was actually really unique and reminded me a bit of a breakfast quiche, and the pancetta one had a super bacon-forward flavor I loved. The agnello was the only miss for me. It just didn't have much flavor, though I did like the texture of the walnuts. Met some friends at La Lanterna for a weekday visit while their family was visiting town. As a super old school italian joint in the West Village, the space is cramped, and they seem to fit as many tables as possible in the dimly lit space. Service was just OK - our waiter was kind and knowledgable, but at times it took lengthy waits to place orders or get our food or drinks. All that said, we did enjoy the sangria and the food they're known for - specifically their lasagna flights. With a seemingly limited cocktail menu but an extensive wine list, we decided to try the sangria, made with port wine and brandy. It was boozy and flavorful, and we ended up getting two each. We even persuaded others to get it for their drink after trying ours - it was that good. If you're looking for "healthier" items, you're pretty much out of luck at La Lanterna, as their specialties are heavier italian food - every lasagna is made with Béchamel: a thick creamy white sauce made from butter, flour and milk. It is a staple in traditional italian cooking, I get it, but I just don't think it's that great. As for the lasagna flights: There's no way to mix-and-match. You either choose the meat, the veggie, or the Mare Y Monti (2 sea-based lasagna, 2 land-based lasagna). Everyone that ordered the lasagna flights enjoyed them, but I didn't think they were anything special. We also tried the margherita pizza, and the mesclun salad - both were great and solid, but nothing special. While I wouldn't choose to come back on my own volition, considering I personally enjoy a healthier diet, I wouldn't necessarily avoid it altogether. That said, I would ask to sit in the back garden area on the upstairs level, rather than the cramped inside or downstairs dining rooms. read more

This place has been on my list for years so when my friend suggested we go I was so excited! I recommend making a reservation. The stairs are very narrow so consider if you're older or not so stable on your feet asking to eat upstairs. It is very dark so you will need the candle to read the menu. The wine prices were shockingly cheap with great variety. I wasn't drinking tonight but if I was I would have opted for one of the many martinis or many hot beverages. I had to order the lasagna flight as a first time customer, but which one? I ended up with the carne option. All were good although I couldn't really tell which was which as I ate. But I've never seen a lasagna flight before so it's a must order! They also have a fish version and a vegetarian version. We also ordered a salad which while simple in flavors was quite delectable. I wrote my first review three years ago, but I had to update it because everyone I've introduced to this place has fallen in love with the tiramisu and keeps coming back for it. I returned to the city after all these years and had it again this month, and it's still the best tiramisu I've ever had: perfect texture, not too sweet, and exactly the way I remembered. We had an absolutely delightful experience here for a friend's birthday. The restaurant is very crowded and eclectic but it's what you expect from a popular local restaurant in New York. We all have drinks to start and they were very classic staples. We shared quite a few appetizers, all of which were fantastic. We also had a salad to share which was delicious, and then my table mates all got different flatbreads, and I got the cacio pepe lasagna.
