After drinking sorta hard around the city. One would get kinda famished. So as we were came out of Bad Luck bar and started walking around for grub, we saw this spot. It was cold out, so we decided to dip in and post drinking food it here. So, let's start shall we. La Lanterna Pizza: From what I could remember, this was sorta weak,,, something about pie seems missing. Everything on paper looked like it would be out of sight, but when it hit my tastebuds it was kind of weak. The dough is delightful though, I would have to give it that. Lombardia: Toppings on this pie is pretty much everything I want in a pizza. And... it was again a bit weak when it hit the tastebuds. I mean from one pie to another is two consecutive weak pies. I would now blame it on the sauce. Calamari: Ok, this was definitely super good. I do adore it, BUT!!! This is a "Basic Bish" dish. Designed for Real Tree fitting farmers to feel like they're cultured and sophisticated. NO! Cacio e Peppe: Not every italian restaurant serves this dish. I get excited when I see this dish in the menu. It's the simplest form of pasta and I adore this establishment for even serving it. The pasta dish definitely didn't disappoint. Pretty much the strongest dish that came out of the kitchen. I would have to give it to this restaurant. The pizzas are totally weak, but the pasta is actually very good. 4 stars is fitting, just steer clear of the pies. I can't wait to come back and try their marsala dish. Plus service was on point. Right before I left Detroit to move to Arizona, I tried this spot out. Now every time I go back to Detroit for work or whatever it may be, this place is a stop for me. The service is excellent: they don't come too often asking how you're doing but they come often enough always at the right time to fill your water or as if you want any other beverage. I remember asking for a mojito and they didn't make it there but the bar tender was kind enough to make something close to it! They make good and strong drinks. The food is absolutely delicious. I've not had lasagne that good anywhere else. Also, not only is it delicious but the portions are large. You can split most dishes with people but you wouldn't want to because it's so good. Even heating up left overs the next day is good. Truly Italian, truly delicious. If you're downtown and looking for a good Italian restaurant this is your spot. This is a really nice little Italian place. I got a really good lasagna that was fantastic. This place has a full bar and was playing Motown music the whole time I was there. It would rank higher if not for the portion size. Unfortunately I had to dock them because the lasagna was about the size of a mid size brownie and it cost 21 dollars. So overpriced. Not for the taste but for the portion size. If you can live with that then by all means check it out. Good food here! read more

So came back-finally-for dinner. So so glad we did. My friend had three things on one plate-it's an Italian place so let your imagination roam. He loved every bite. I had the lasagna bolognese (while nothing like the lasagna I had in Bologna) and it was outstanding. It cam in three pieces, each about the size of a Twinkie. I ate two, my friend had half of the other-he loved it. So, it is LOUD!!! I was thrilled to discover this restaurant walking distance from the Indigo Hotel. Great service. Friendly hard working staff, the bartenders Rob and Andrew make you feel welcome but the main draw is the delicious spectacular food!! I come here for diner 1-2 times per week. Small place, but the food is excellent! Service is good, I had no issues both times I've eaten there.

I stopped by La Lanterna to pick up lunch, and got a prosciutto, fresh mozzarella, tomato, arugula, and balsamic glaze panini, which came with rosemary fries. It wasn't a bad deal for $11, although not an amazing one either. The person behind the bar was very kind while my companions and I waited for my food, and poured us all water while we waited. I didn't even mind that the panini took a while. You can't see the rosemary on the rosemary fries, but you can taste it, and they're pretty decent for a side of fries. The sandwich was also pretty yummy, and all in all, the experience makes me want to add La Lanterna to my lunch rotation in downtown Detroit. read more

We walked in during a Saturday brunch because we saw their sidewalk sign for $2 bloody marys and mimosas. The restaurant was understaffed (there was one server) and service was (obviously) slow. I don't mind waiting because it's not the server's fault that there weren't enough people working. We asked for two bloody marys. Our server asked if Tito's was okay for them - sure, whatever. We got a single (vegan) pizza, which was mediocre. I'd rather go to PizzaPlex or any other pizza place in the city. When we got our bill, we were charged for two $3 bloody marys and two $9 Tito's shots - what? We asked about it, and she gave us the second bill shown - $17 for two bloody marys. At this point, we paid and left. But why would we be charged $8.50 per bloody mary when it's posted multiple places (I should have taken a photo of their sidewalk sign but I did screenshot their menu) that they have a $2 special? Are they really charging us an extra $6.50 to have Tito's? Why wasn't the upcharge mentioned? We would have been fine with the well vodka. Anyway, the entire experience ranged from poor to mediocre, and our final bill was no different. We live in the city and won't be coming back. Edit: I docked a star because I remember two people being sat to our right, them sitting for ~10 minutes, drinking water, settling in, looking at the ! crinkly paper menus and laminated drink menu ! and then leaving...two other people came in and were seated in the same spot. Staff did NOT clean off that table or seat. Pre-Covid, this isn't a huge deal. But during a pandemic, this is disgusting. Edit to reply to the owner's comment: We weren't told there was 1) an upcharge and 2) an option for anything other than Tito's. If that's the case, it should have been, "Would you like Tito's for $6.50 more?" Also, Tito's is top shelf? No way. Very good Italian restaurant located in the heart of downtown Detroit. Very casual ambiance with friendliest staff, I enjoyed my dinner here while in town. I started my dinner with burrata. They make this in house. I really love that soft cream. That texture is heavenly good, it's my must have whenever they make in house. They also make gnocchi in house and they are very good as well. Other food I liked was their meatballs. Pizza was cooked perfectly. Oh don't forget the dessert. They have typical Italian desert available, sure to satisfy your sweet tooth. They have this dessert made with mascarpone, oh that rich and creamy mascarpone is so bad for your health but can't resist so good. I made sure I spent extra time at the gym next day! read more

Amazing! We were looking for a place to eat and since we have dietary restrictions in our party, it is difficult to please everyone. We have vegan and GF diners and people that love meat, cheese and gluten. I never thought a pizza place would work but it sure was perfection!! They offered vegan cheese and GF crust. We all ordered pizza and not only were the vegan and GF options unbelievably delicious, but all of our pizzas were OUTSTANDING!! We shared the Parmesan fries as a starter and they were delicious as well. The service was wonderful and the ambiance was nice. Clean restrooms and friendly staff. We went the night before the big Lion's game. The bar tenders had a bubble machine and were chanting the Lion QB's name. It's a small place with a European feel. The big wood oven is near the back and you can smell the pizzas cooking. The pizza was probably the best pizza we have ever had. And we have had pizza in Italy. Came here on a Friday night and was able to snag a table for two without a wait! We absolutely loved our time here. I was super excited about the menu and eager to try all of the dishes. I went with the la lanterna pasta which was so so delicious! Creamy, cheesy, meaty and full of flavor. My boyfriend tried the chicken saltimbocca which was equally as flavorful. The menu featured other great pasta options as well as pizza which I will have to try next time. But what made the experience that much better was our incredibly kind server. She answered our questions, was prompt and was just genuinely nice to talk to. The restaurant itself was also a chic wine bar kind of vibe. Sunday afternoon late lunch, first time in. Definitely impressed and will return. Bruschetta con Scampi app was excellent. Ciabatta wasn't sliced 3" thick like you get some places, it was thin so the herbs/veggies/glaze were the star of the show. Went with the Primavera pie, even though they were unfortunately out of artichokes, which isn't abnormal with current supply chain issues. Pizza came out quickly, looked beautiful. Crunch on the crust was perfect, middle of the pie was SLIGHTLY underdone for my personal taste, could be the goat cheese making it a tiny bit soggy. I think next time I'll order my pie more well done, but that's just a personal preference. Great beer/wine selection, our server Sarah was quick, polite and attentive. We have never been to Detroit and picked La Lanterna on a whim. Place was packed but we managed to get a table (family of five with a toddler). We only ordered pizzas and they were really good! Highly recommend the spinach and artichoke pizza. Our server was also very patient with our wild toddler - even bringing him a few cherries from the bar. Wish I remembered his name for props! I just ordered takeout from Grubhub, so this is about food only. I ordered a panini with prosciutto, mozz, tomato, arugula and balsamic glaze which comes with rosemary fries until 4. I also got a side salad. The sandwich is $11 and pretty small, but tasty, fresh ingredients. The tomato is better in season, I'm sure, but the bread was perfect. Crunchy and chewy at the same time. The fries were crispy and had just the right amount of rosemary, and the salad was fresh with homemade garlic vinaigrette. Yum! I'd love to try their pizza. read more

Went to this place for a Sunday lunch. The place appears casual during the day, but I can see it being more escalated in the evening. May be suitable for a casual dinner date. The tablecloth is a classic red-white checkered Italian restaurant, but the interior itself is more modern. The service is excellent. We were seated very quickly, they were very attentive, our waiter checked on our table several times and always make sure everything is okay. I went for Tris Di Pasta, which as the name contains three types of pasta - ravioli in sage butter sauce, tagliatelle in bolognese sauce, and gnocchi palmina (tomato-cream sauce). The pasta was cooked al-dente and has a nice chewy texture. The gnocchi has a nice bite to it as well. However, I think the bolognese has a very intense red wine flavor and leaves a bitter aftertaste. Not a huge problem, but I guess doesn't work too well with me. The palmina sauce was good, but definitely avoid this if you have GERD as the tomato flavor is pretty strong. The ravioli was perfect though. Unbelievable food and service here. From the time we stepped in the door the hostesses at the front made sure we felt welcomed. They were so kind to give us their recommendations and made special arrangements for some seats for drinks knowing all the tables were going to be full for a while with several big parties. The drinks we ordered and apps were absolutely fantastic. Following the drinks we were seated, we then proceeded to have the best meatballs and, yes that's right and lasagna I HAVE EVER HAD. 3.5 stars... Stopped in before Wicked a couple weeks ago. Selected this place because I had a GF friend in tow. I also tried the GF pizza. The crust was not great. Seemed doughy and undercooked but the topping flavors were good. The gnocchi was pretty good as well as the bolognese.
