Just to update. We found out later on they have a spicier hot sauce, you just have to ask for it-problem solved!

Skipper's Pier Coastal Cajun Kitchen - Crab Boil Pot and Fish and Chips! Rare find here in East Texas!!

I went to Skipper's Pier in Gladewater thinking I was just grabbing dinner. Instead, I had one of…read morethose meals that makes you sit quietly for a minute afterward questioning why you ever eat anywhere else. The seafood was ridiculously good. The shrimp were cooked perfectly, the seasoning was on point, and everything came out fresh and hot. I'm convinced somebody in that kitchen has a direct connection to the Gulf because there's no reason seafood in East Texas should taste that good. The place was busy, the staff was hustling, and somehow everything still came out fast. By the end of the meal I was already planning what I was ordering next time before I had even paid the check. If you leave Skipper's hungry, that's honestly a personal decision.

I went here with my dad who was born and raised in the area. He explained that we should go early…read morebecause they can get really busy, really quickly. So we went at around 4:45 in the afternoon on a Friday. There was already a 20-30 minute wait for a table inside, but instant seating on the patio, which we took. I'm breaking this into two scores--the food which is the most important, and the service (not just waitress, but overall). Food 4.5 stars--not perfect, but very good. Service 3.0 After getting seated on the patio we were told the server would be out shortly. After about 15 minutes I went back in to ask for menus--coincidently the person that seated us was telling the server that they had people at our table, so I turned around and went back out. Shortly thereafter we were given menus and we ordered drinks. Dad got 50/50 tea and I got water and a whisky rocks which confused the waitress. "So like, with Coke?" No, ma'am, just the whiskey poured over rocks, whatever your house whiskey is, I'm not that picky. We already knew what we wanted and ordered the catfish filets with fries, and fried okra. The food came quickly, but still no drinks. Eventually those came out. My whiskey was in a larger glass, not a whole lot but enough not to complain. The waitress then asked if I wanted a straw for it because she wasn't sure. She might have been new to service, so I'm not upset, I was more amused. She is working at a bar/restaurant but perhaps the servers are kept seperate and she's not used to running for the bar. The food was excellent. The catfish was freshly fried, the outside a good crunchy crust and the inside darn near dissolved it was so tender and moist, not even a hint of being over or under done. Excellent flavor, it didn't need the house made dips (a tartar and a cocktail sauce, both great), but they complimented it. Tartar was heavy on mayo flavor than traditional tartar, but you could still tell what it was. Cocktail sauce seemed fairly standard, I guess I can't promise that one was house made. Two jalapeno hush puppies came with it. They were standard fair, a little bit of spice, enough to enjoy while letting non-spicy people still tolerate it. Crunch went deep, the center was cooked but a lot less of the ratio than the crunch outside. Fries were also standard, but fried well, good crunch and fluffy inside. Fish was the absolute star, it was "close your eyes and enjoy" good. Fried okra was bland. It was crunch on the outside, soft but not gooey on the inside so they treated it well to reduce the slime, but it didn't stand out from any other fried okra I've had. Wouldn't get it again, but it was cheap. Didn't get checked on very often, I think we were offered drink refills when we asked for the check. Got the bill. Fish plates, $16. Okra side: 3.50. My one ounce of whiskey, TWELVE DOLLARS. I don't know if she rang it in wrong, or if their prices are just ridiculous for that stuff. Lesson learned, don't order alcohol here. But most certainly order the fish. Service lacking, perhaps still learning, fish was absolutely wonderful.

I really haven't had a bad time yet. The only thing that frustrates me is that the hostesses often want to seat me in the other side of the restaurant from the bar side. I sat there once and hated it. In fact, I got up and left. IT's loud and dingy and the atmosphere is the opposite of what I go there for. The problem I see is that the bar side has too many large tables. A person going alone is going to want to be on that side. Overall, I haven't had a bad experience and it's nice to pop in for a cold beer and some oysters.

When we asked, she just replied, "I don't know" & I asked her if she could please go check so we know if we need to find something else to order if need be. Two managers both came over & they apologized & explicitly. The blackened chicken & veggies with the pineapple mango salsa was tasty but the rice was bland. Husbands redfish tacos were huge & blackened as well. Very tasty though he too agreed the rice was flavorless. They do charge $3.99 for chips & salsa.

This is a solid 1 star review. The place was empty except…read morefor a table of two (should have been an obvious sighn). Server was nice but very timid. Was not impressed that I couldn't get what I wanted. I wanted the Mac & cheese balls - they were out and I got a explanation of how its a specific cheese thats used and is hard to find so they never have it to make them - ok take it off the menu if she never has it to serve. Disappointed. Next I wanted a cup of chicken gumbo. Server tells me "she hasn't told me if shes made it or not"...im sorry what? (As someone who served/bartended for 20 years, you always know what's available at the start of your shift). So now being very disappointed again, I settled with the Philly Cheese steak and fried pickles. My son ordered the wings and fried rice. My husband and daughter were going to split the seafood boil and we got her the chicken tenders with fries as a back up because shes been begging for a seafood boil and we wanted to treat her to one after her school musical. Let's cut to the food - mind you, nothing came out at the same time. It took far too long for the fried pickles to come out. They were VERY salty and extremely crunchy. (Over cooked). A good 15 minutes later came out the oysters for my husband. He liked them - nothing special. My sons rice was next, a good 20 minutes after the pickles. This was probably hands down the best thing they have on the menu! Then came his wings - he said they were good. They were definitely drowning in a hot sauce bath. Next thing to come out was my daughter's chicken strips with fries. She said it was ok. She only ate 1 chicken strip and a few fries. (She wanted the seafood boil!) Then came out the seafood boil. The #3 on the menu. Hubby pulled some crab out for our 8yo daughter to have the first bite. She chewed once and spot it out because her mouth was on fire. This led to tears of it being toooo spicy! Hubby took 2 bites and the same thing. He spit it out because it was too spicy. Extremely disappointed at this point. Then came my sandwich. Something simple, right? Nope, not for this place. Burnt bread - too hard to bite into. The sandwich was dry AF and the meat was over cooked. I had one bite and Hubby took one bite. We were not impressed by anything here. The server came to ask me about the food when I was going up to get our bill and pay. I told him it wasnt great and the seafood was too spicy. He stated he told the cook to not make it spicy since a kid would be eating it. I said "it was fu@!ing covered in seasoning". ((OH we were also sitting outside so the lighting wasnt tooo great)). So then, the cook/owner whatever lady asked me about it and I told her how it was. She said "I can rinse it off in the pot", I told her it was fine, we were done. She basically told me she didnt season it much and its how it is. Well, bish, yoir cooking is trash. And to top it, the other couple in there said and I quote "bro, can we get 2 waters? This is too spicy"....sooooooo shes over seasoning her chit, and over cooking easy stuff. My advice to the cook, maybe you should listen to the customers. We spent almost $130 on food plus $25 tip to the serve. He told me he couldn't do anything other than take the drinks off the bill. (Insert eye roll)... it wasnt about the money or getting anything for free. Its the cook/owner taking accountability and maybe just MAYBE apologize that you did in fact, over season the chit out of the food! Zero stars. Sadly I had to put one star to do this. Will not return or recommend to anyone. Good luck keeping that place open when you dont serve everything onto the menu, over season and have an empty restaurant at dinner time on top of having slow cook times. Also, all the food should go out at the same time.

The salsa was superb, some of the best ever. To make it perfect for my taste, I added a few drips of lemon juice and a little salt. It was so good that I purchased some extra to take with me. A significant disappointment was the stale chips, something that had been noted in other reviews. It's hard to imagine why a simple chip warming oven wouldn't be a quick purchase to remedy this. The tacos were okay, but the birilla one was inexplicably tough. I'm not sure how that happened, since the meat was shredded, but there it was. The beef enchiladas were delicious, as was the red sauce. The accompanying beans and rice were nothing to write home about. The star of the meal was a huge slice of tres leches cake. Oh, my word~~how could anything be this good? I would drive quite a few miles to have just this, and it was worth every penny of the eight-plus bucks on the ticket.
