Wrong pastry -- NOT Sfingi :(
    Christine D.

Chose to come here Friday instead of a different Italian bakery in Manhattan to get my favorite pastry before they disappear until next year -- Sfingi! Ordered five Sfingi and was given the wrong pastry. Wasted about $35/$40 and had my Easter dessert ruined. The pastry given I do not like at all - do not like the cream inside and hate cherries! So disappointed!

This is a wonderful pastry shop in Astoria! The almond paste filled croissant was big and drizzled with chocolate, almond slices and powdered sugar. Amazing! The cinnamon rolls were delicious too! Lots of cinnamon but not over powering. Sugar dizzled! We had a raspberry filled cheese danish for a change haha. The was the only one not sugar glazed. There were so many delicious treats in the shop that I did not know where to start and stop. This place is definitely worth another visit! There were too many things that I did not get to try, yet.

Old school Italian bakery. I have been coming here in all my years of living in Astoria. My favorite is the pecan pie, can never go wrong! Not too sweet, baked just right! Can't walk in without grabbing one on the way out.

Super cute old-school Italian bakery on Ditmars. The pastries were fine, nothing crazy special but certainly good. However, the service was absolutely fantastic. The staff was WONDERFUL. I got an apple strudel and a red velvet cake. The strudel was really fresh and not too sweet. The red velvet was okay, I've had better I've had worse. Will come back and try more pastries. Prices were great too.

This place has been around since I was a kid and decades later I'm still coming back for their treats. I love walking in and smelling the sweet baked goods. The selection is vast with treats for so many pallets but can't speak to those who have a gluten allergy. This review is based on my last experience and the girls behind the counter were patient no helpful. The treats I purchased were enjoyed by my entire family.

Absolute disappointment. Custom ordered and paid ahead for a birthday cake. Asked for cannoli cream and chocolate mousse. At the party, cake was cut open to a thin layer of cannoli that tasted like rum, and a layer of whipped cream, not chocolate. This was a cheaply made, overpriced cake and I will never return. I grew up in Astoria and loved this bakery as a young kid. When I called after the party to rectify the situation, I was asked for pics which I so graciously provided, sad I got back a snarky response from the owner. Didn't even make any sense because she sent a picture of another cake that wasn't mine! Greed gets you nowhere, and neither does your horrible customer service etiquette. The cake was cut in half, tossed in the garbage and my guests ate Italian cookies from BJ's. Shame on you. Look at this response from Maria, the owner. What a nasty, unprofessional person. Your family would be so proud of you... talking to paying customers like you're better than them.

There is definitely an old-world charm to La Guli Bakery, located on Ditmars Blvd. in Astoria. This old Italian family-owned business, whose granddaughter now runs the establishment, has been in the same building for decades. If you are looking for a traditional Italian pastry experience, this has been my go-to since my childhood. They used to be the best bakery, hands down. From homemade cakes to gelatos, you name it--they were fantastic. I make it a point to visit here every once in a while, and today was the day before they shut down for a week of vacation. Upon entering, my partner and I still had the same feeling and smell of the bakery and had the whole store to ourselves, which made it easier for us to choose the strawberry shortcake, chocolate eclair, fruit tart, and glazed Napoleon. Unfortunately, the freshness wasn't there, as the cream in the Glazed Napoleon was dry and not even sweet. It's a shame that a bakery that used to be known for its quality pastries is no longer the same.

My manager got my birthday cake from La Guli. I am a chocolate lover however I never get chocolate cake from bakeries because they are usually not great. My chocolate hazelnut cake with chocolate ganache was THE BEST chocolate cake I have ever had in my life! The cake was moist with a deep chocolate flavor, the mousse was creamy and tasted like a candy bar. The chocolate ganache was indulgent. The cake reminded me of a Ferraro Rocher. It was perfect! Made me very very happy.

I have been hearing about La Guli pastry shop from my boyfriends parents for 10 years now it was time that I go there myself and see what they had to offer me and they most certainly didn't disappoint my tastebuds. I drove here at 7 am on a Sunday morning with the taste for savoiardis after I bought them from another bakery I had come across a day earlier in hopes that they would suit my cravings but it just wasn't the same as La Guli's. I ended up grabbing a little bit of everything for myself and a few friends and I left with a huge bag and the biggest smile on my face. Once I came back home I dove right into the savoiardis and they were amazing and perfect as I remember. I can't wait to come back here and grab some more yummy treats to try!

Now it is my birthday and ordered cake $75 now look at the cake. I won't eat that cake even if it was free and the roses were paid $150, Please keep the money and come take your S****y cake back. Oh btw I have added the pictures. I also added a picture of a cake that my roommate bought for me for $55

0 stars if I could. Was not satisfied with my cake, and asked for it to be fixed. Baker was not there so I asked for a partial refund. When the worker called her so I can speak, she cursed me, a paying & local customer for years, out. Lack of professionalism due to the fact that the baker is also the owner. What I ordered vs what I got pictured below. See for yourself. She also brought up her personal problems which really had no place in the conversation, trying to gain sympathy for unprofessional worth ethic.

Staff is really nice but the pastries were not fresh. Everything was rock hard. I could barely eat anything but my bf gobbled everything down because he was starving.

On a regular old weeknight I navigated the short trek to Astoria for a dinner party. My job was to bring the sweets - I was instructed to stop into the little pastry shop on the way and pick out some post-dinner delights. I walk into La Guli to be greeted by giant handsome cop with a thick NY accent sipping coffee from a travel mug. He comments to me about his green choice of bringing is own mug to the shop - I agree with him that green choices are HOT ones. After picking out a few staples like chocolate covered cannolis and tiny berry tarts I ask Officer Friendly if he has any recommendations. Enthusiastically he responds "The mouse. If you like chocolate, you gotta get the mouse, it's unreal." I order up "the mouse" to go along with a few other odds and ends.. Mind you there were only 5 of us at this dinner and somehow I walked away with what seemed to a couple pounds of yummies adding up to seventeen ducats! Ooops - guess I'm a girl who can't say no to sweets. Pastry ladies wrap up my prizes in an adorable box as I complete my mini photo-shoot trying to savor all the textures, smells, colors, kitschy character, and desirable goods surrounding me (see attached.) My law enforcement pal asks if I want to take his picture, declining I mention I write food reviews and he should too. He said "be sure to mention their coffee is amazing." I grab my package of sweets, bid my goodbyes and hurry off to dinner. Everyone's jaws dropped to the ground by the sight of all my goodies. Everything was amazing, the cannolis, fruit pastries, lobster tail.. The raspberry & chocolate mousse pastry was exceedingly delicious. But the mousse mouse was the best. The absolute best. The best desert we all had ever had. Mister Cop if you are out there - thank you! Thank you for your solid recommendation AND saving the planet.

The Portuguese egg tart is what you would expect from one of these bakery's, very basic but it was nice and flaky. The milk tea was also okay, we asked for less sugar so it was not too sweet. We also got the sesame mochi to go and this was delicious! Definitely the best thing I bought from this bakery. The sesame paste was nice and strong but not too gritty and the mochi was super soft. But then again, I only get the sponge cake and I can't differentiate fresh vs not fresh between them (I'll just assume that if it's NOT fresh, I would have been able to tell).
