I used to live in Florida and had this great Cuban cafeteria next door to my apartment, they had this incredible pork that is VERY similar to La Gran Parada. I had not been able to find anything similar since I moved back to Chicago despite the wonderful restaurants we have. The rice was also delicious. People, why is it that people don't tell me about places like this until I've been here for 4 years? It makes me wonder how many other places there are around that I'm missing out on. La Gran Parada is an exciting bustling restaurant located by the Rhode Island Hospital. Some might call it a hole in the wall but let's be real, it's much bigger than most restaurants in Providence. La Gran Parada or the Great Stop that showcases Dominican food. People of all backgrounds come here for the food but you'll see many of the local Spanish speaking communities make up most of the line. If you get here right at lunch or dinner time, expect to be waiting in line for a while which winds through the restaurant and out the door. They have their own parking lot but most people park on the street. It's cafeteria style so you select between a medium or large container. I believe they are $6 and $8. You choose your form of starch which may be white rice, yellow rice or mofongo which is a plantain ball with some of your favorite meats inside. You can also get a special request for fried green bananas which are not sweet at all and perfectly compliments the other foods. Then you choose your meats but might I recommend getting the beef stew or la res guisada. Delicious and ask for sauce on top of your rice! If you're not watching your cholesterol or even if you are, you should get the chicarron de cerdo. It's fried pork belly that you buy by the pound. It's crunchy flavorful and awesome! To top it all off, you should also get the passionfruit drink MMMM You get a LOT of food. I have a huge appetite and I think that most of the boxes they have can feed 3 people with large appetites. Depending on the dish, La Gran Parada and another spot on Broad is tied for my top 2 of Dominican food in Providence at the moment. It's located across the street from a CVS in a nondescript strip mall hidden away in plain sight, in an under-appreciated neighborhood. Despite how few yelp reviews there are, it's very popular and can get really busy, especially during lunch. Latin food lovers eat this place up. What makes La Gran Parada stand out from other Dominican spots like Carolina's or Pito's is how much more inviting the dining area is. They had remodeled a year or so ago so everything is spic and span and the prices remained inexpensive, about $5 for a "small" portion that is generously piled up with food like a pyramid on your plate. The food is cafeteria-style and a lot of it tastes better than some made-to-order restaurants around town, Latin or otherwise. There's no signs or menus that I've seen to describe the food, you just pick a plate size and point at something that looks tasty until the server stops asking you what you want. Or, ask. Many of the workers speak English and everyone I've encountered has been helpful. Final thoughts: Bring friends. Try everything. Prepare for major food coma. read more

I may not be able to speak a lick of Spanish, but boy, can I appreciate the food!! I was on a mission with the family to find some good and authentic Spanish food. We had heard about this restaurant and so we decided to give it a try. Upon entering, the place looked very clean and the cafeteria style serving caught my eye. All of the food is kept behind a glass counter, this way you can browse the food while waiting in line. Seriously, it is set up just like a school Cafeteria! The staff speak English, so no worries about communicating. My dish consisted of beef (almost a stew like beef and texture) along with a small side salad and yellow rice with beans. I also wanted to try the fried platanos and the chicken empanada. Once you place your order, you can take a seat wherever you like and the food is brought to you. You don't even have to pay until you are finished! SIDE NOTE: They only accept CASH. No credit cards. The food is priced fairly though. I would even go as far as saying the cost is relatively cheap for the amount of food you get. Everything we ordered was delicious! I really can't think of a complaint. This is a great place, it really is. I don't know exactly what kind of food this is, or where these folks are from -perhaps "the island of delicious pork"? To be fair, I have only tried a few things; the Chicharrón and some wonderfully rich soupy ribs with rice (that I admit I don't know know the name of, I just pointed to it and said "that, please") I bet that if you speak and even rudimentary Spanish (unlike me) you'll have an even better experience here. All I know is that's cheap, fast, and they have the absolutely BEST Chicharrónes I have ever tasted. They do have some small tables but its really more of a take-out kind of place. As far as Spanish restaurants go on Broad street in Providence go, this is the top dog in my book. This place is the newest and cleanest looking place I've been to. Their selection is the biggest. Their chicharrones are the best ones I've ever seen, they are huge. I am a huge fan of ox tail and goat. I tried the oxtail. Unlike other Spanish restaurants that charge a flat fee for all meats, this place charged 14 bucks. It was very good. It was cooked in a sherry. If this place wasn't so busy I'd consider eating here more on my work week lunch spot. This is more of a Friday reward me for a long hard week lunch spot. There is no written menu because they cook Dominican food, if you are Latino/a and you know what you want but it's not offered in the food choices displayed you just ask if they can prepare that dish for you. You can call in your orders. They also prepare food for parties. They do require large party orders leave a deposit and are placed in person with the owner. As for the cash only issue, they have an ATM available toward the back entrance. My family and I love this place, they get 4 stars because my children have found small pieces of bone in their chicken pastelitos. Over all their food is the cleanest, best tasting, best prices and with the most choices at the counter. If you like Dominican food this place is your best option for breakfast, lunch or dinner.
