Before heading to dinner, my mom wanted to walk inside Lion supermarket. Right before we reached the supermarket, we passed by this place and my mom insisted to go take a look. After walking around for a few minutes, we picked up a few baked goods and steamed buns. For myself, I chose the steamed red braised pork bun and my daughter grabbed the chocolate croissants. As for flavor, I didn't like red braised pork bun. The color was off and so was the flavor. It was a bag of 6 for around $14 and the buns were pretty "flat". No comment on the croissants since I didn't try them but the exterior was pretty soggy (probably from sitting out all day). The cashier was very friendly but I don't think she speaks English since she kept talking to us in Mandarin. We visit this strip mall often when we find ourselves in Newark, and occasionally pop our heads into La Farfalla. They offer a pretty good deal on bulk refrigerated buns and frozen dumplings, and have a pretty good assortment of breads and pastries to choose from. On our last trip here, we bought a pistachio bun. It was definitely our LEAST favorite bun of the batch we chose, and highly regretted getting it. I bought their rainbow swiss roll cakes, which come in different flavors. I never saw any shop doing this. You get to try a different taste. I like their swiss roll, if you are not sweet. This is a must-try cake to get. The cake is soft and spongy. Also, I had their frozen food, like shrimp wontons and beef dumplings. I got a mango flavor which was no where to be tasted. It tasted like a vanilla cake with little pieces of mangoes in it. Came here for the individual mousse cake and was pretty disappointed when they didn't have any. There was a box of sliced fluffy Japanese cheesecakes that I opted getting, but soon regretted it because of how expensive it was for 4 small slices ($15). Each slice was a different flavor: matcha, vanilla, chocolate, and strawberry. They were light and fluffy, and filled with whipped cream which was surprising since Japanese cheesecake doesn't have cream in it. GREAT FROZEN CHINESE DUMPLINGS HERE. If you have frozen dumplings on your grocery list don't get them from the grocery store, get them from here. Review is only for the frozen dumplings and not their baked goods. They taste fresher, the skins are thin, and it's bursting with fillings. They are located in the freezer on the right side when you walk in, they will be in black takeout containers with clear lids or in bags. They were almost sold out around 2:30 pm which means tons of people are buying them. Ordered two cakes for my bf's birthday: durian and peach/mango cake. They were able to accommodate making two smaller cakes which was nice, a few places I called couldn't do it. When I got there, the place was really hot and there were barely any bakery items on the shelves. I was a little nervous for how the cake was going to turn out. The cake wasn't ready as promised but it was delicious! My bf enjoyed the durian cake but not so the peach/mango cake. Unique flavors for fruit cake! My sister really wanted guava or passionfruit cake. Both fruit cakes were hard to find in SF due to not being in season, places not open because of the lockdown, and/or requires a special three day order in advance. Update: I used to absolutely adore and crave the taro buns from La Farfalla! I still crave taro buns, but recently, La Farfalla has seemed to change their taro bun recipe. The previous taro buns were loaded with sweet taro paste (with the occasional taro piece), and was held together by a beautiful, light taro purple, thin, stretchy, doughy, yet fluffy bun. It was so delightful. Recently, the bakery's taro buns are steamed and come out differently. The bun exterior is more white, more dense, and less doughy but with more flour. The taro filling is also lackluster. There is less taro taste and the wonderful taro paste is a drier, mashed taro texture. Very different. Overall, I am not complaining about the change, and will continue to support this bakery. However, I do prefer the old purple taro paste filled buns, and will now have to find a new place that can provide my favorite taro buns. read more

My friend picked up some goodies from this location and I am obsessed! Their pork buns are so juicy, plenty of meat, and the bun is so soft, melt in your mouth! The black forest cake used maraschino cherries rather than fresh (which may be due to seasonality). The ordering process was easy - we placed the orders over the phone a day or two before we needed them. They wrote what we wanted on the cakes and had them ready for pick up on time. I went to this place with pretty low expectations, but the buns were actually decent! They had a deal going on for "Buy 2 breads, get 1 free". The prices here are more in line with 85C (so pricier for what it is, $2+ for most buns), as opposed to the standard Chinese Bakery (where you can get a pineapple bun for ~$1) I tried the green tea red bean mochi bun, taro pineapple bun, and coconut bread. Green tea red bean mochi bun: in the shape of a bear head, I ate the ears first which were disappointing because they were just green tea flavored bread with none of the chewiness of mochi. I thought the bread would be like those new mochi donuts; however, once you get to the body of the bun, there are ACTUAL PIECES OF MOCHI in the red bean filling!!
