Fresh and delicious chinese style baked goods! We usually get their egg tarts and curry puffs, but this time I'm also buying a whole bunch of cookies and shortbreads to share with my coworkers. The coconut macaroons was subtly sweet, slightly buttery, and had a nice firm texture. This was my favorite of the bunch today. The cranberry shortbread also held up nicely, but wasn't as buttery as I would like. The curry puffs are reliably good. I also got their green onion and bacon bread- it is incredibly soft and mild in flavor. I like this one a lot better than the stuff we buy in bulk in Oakland. Highly recommend the Whole Wheat Bread Loaf from Mary's. The slices toast up to a perfect crunchy consistency and taste amazing when paired with butter or jam. It's my fav item that I always pick up. I also like the green onion ham bun. Throw it in an air fryer for a minute or two and it's a great snack even the next day. Service was attentive whenever I went during lunchtime and seemed tidy. Also heads up there's a $8 credit card minimum, but you might as well pick up a handful of things while you're here. Prices are fair. read more

I recently ordered a cake for my son's graduation party, when i walked in earlier, I mentioned we have 50 guests and the lady / manager mentioned 1/2 sheet is for about 40 ppl, and suggested we make a square half sheet (so if the half sheet is 18x12, they will make 18x18), then i should have good amount. She charge half sheet for 150$ and she asked for 200 for mine (plus 10 for fruits), I liked the design (she showed me on her phone), and since this fits the need , I paid. On the pick up day, what i got is a square cutting from half sheet cake (so instead of 18x18, I got 12x12), I said this was not the original discussion, they were super defensive and insisted on everything they did was right, means the order was meant to be a 12x12 square cake, cut from 1/2 sheet, so who would you pay $200 for a regular fruit cake less than 1/2 sheet? the design is basically a yellow background with a chocolate graduate cap on it. i don't think this is the way to do business, if you miscommunicated the order sepcs with your cake maker, just admit it, if you intentionally charge $200 for a less than 1/2 sheet cake, that is very wrong. read more

You might miss this bakery if you blink as you drive past it. You can almost see the sign from Paseo Padre. The actual front door is on the other side, not visible from the street. There's plenty of parking in the parking lot, despite it being shared by Ranch 99 and some other shops at this shopping center. I even came here on a Sunday and parking was no problem at all. Mary's Bakery is small bakery with friendly staff. You'll find sweet and savory buns, cakes, and of course, egg tarts. The onion bun is pretty good; this is my daughter's favorite because her grandfather always pick these up for her. They greet you when you enter the store. Being a small shop can be a good thing. Despite a smaller selection, you're also not overwhelmed and can easily figure out what to get. I stopped by on a whim right after dinner and ended up being really glad I did. As soon as I walked in, the place had that classic mom and pop bakery feel with warm, homey Asian vibes. We decided on the Oreo vanilla ice cream cake, and it completely exceeded expectations. Super creamy, rich without being too sweet, and packed with Oreo flavor in every bite. I've had plenty of ice cream cakes before, and this one was easily better than anything I've had at Baskin-Robbins. Come in the morning if you want to walk into their bakery and be greeted with a warm smells of sweet chinese baked goods fresh out of the oven. Just went this morning and there was barely anything out for me to put on a tray, BUT, they had the racks that were just pulled out of the oven. I can't say how the other baked goods are since I haven't tried them, but the Cocktail Buns & HK Style Pineapple Buns are similar, if not better, than what I used to get from Oakland's Chinatown. Not realizing that I would have time to head to Pineapple King :10 before they closed, I was able to compare side by side those wonders of shiny Kong. The sugar crunch topping is not tight and rich like the latter's, and the crumb on the bun is way, way too airy and no substantial. It's just like a Ranch 99 bun, as in, it will do, but definitely nowhere like the authentic ones of Hong Kong I'm addicted to. Now, if only someone can tell me how to get snow buns..... BESIDES EGG TARTS Mary's Bakery is known for the egg tarts however I wanted to try other items. In January I came here on a Wednesday morning. One item I bought was the chocolate croissant even though the sign stated Chocolate Danish. Of all the croissants I've eaten the biggest hit or miss has been the chocolate croissant. Either there isn't enough chocolate in the croissant or the croissant is stale. What is unique about the chocolate croissant at Mary's Bakery is the croissant is very soft. Yet there is ample chocolate on the outside and inside the croissant. That was one item I was delightfully surprised at Mary's Bakery. About two months later I came back to Mary's Bakery. I was planning to get an egg tart. I also ordered two items: cream cheese tart and custard pineapple bun. I've never ate a pineapple bun before. I was concerned that the outside looked tough. When I took a bite of the bun it was soft. The custard inside was just ok. Cream cheese can be tarty, but the cream cheese in the tart tasted smooth. What can I say about the egg tart at Mary's Bakery? The egg custard doesn't taste too eggy. That's why people love the egg tarts at Mary's Bakery. If there is a nitpick I have with the egg tart is the crust is too crumbly as I prefer the crust of the egg tart crispy. Off course I'll go back to Mary's Bakery for egg tarts, but at least I know there are other items from this bakery I can enjoy. read more

Picked up a mango cake from Mary's Bakery for a friend's birthday but we were all underwhelmed. Presentation was A+ but the mango used wasn't great. I regret getting this cake out of season, since I assume that's why the mango wasn't good. Ordering was easy. I pre-ordered two days beforehand on their website and stopped by their store in Fremont to pick up. The store is located in a shopping plaza with a big parking lot. The cake was ready and I had already prepaid online ($49 for the mango cake), so I was in and out of the store in minutes. We ate the cake the next day. While we all loved the presentation and especially the mango "bow" on top, the mango slices weren't ripe or sweet. I also found the cake to be a bit dry. I'd be willing to give their mango cake another try in the summertime once mangoes are in season again. read more

At first, I wondered why this bakery only has a 3.8-star rating. After today's experience, I honestly feel that even 3.8 stars is too high. I called before 10 a.m. to order a birthday cake for same-day pickup. I was told to come to the store to pay first because it was considered a "special order." I drove 20 minutes to the store just to do that. When I arrived, there were no customers, yet I was ignored at the counter. A customer who came in after me was served first. I was then given completely inconsistent information. First, I was told the cake could be ready after 5 p.m. Later, I was told all cake orders require three days' notice. This directly contradicted what I was told on the phone and earlier in person. This kind of service is confusing, unprofessional, and very unfriendly. I wasted time and gas for nothing. I will not be returning, and I would not recommend this place. I went to Sang Kee Bakery instead, where the service was excellent, prices were reasonable, and the cake tasted great. read more

My first visit to Mary's Bakery was in search of a snack, and the egg tarts drew me in. A beautifully round and plump egg tart with the perfect filling to crust ratio (I like more filling), not too sweet custard and a warm, flaky crust. This is one of the better egg tarts I've had. The BBQ pork pastry was alright -- pork filling was meager compared to the amount of puff pastry and filling taste was just ok. I think it was missing some deeper char siu flavor. The curry pork pastry is delicious, even if it's the same amount of puff pastry. The curry pork filling is flavored perfectly with the taste of my favorite childhood curry pastries, rich with pork, onion and black pepper. I also think the filling be more substantial though. The baked nian goh or mochi cake was excellent, not too sweet and just the right stickiness with a nice outer layer. While I've had better, this is the best Cantonese bakery that I've found so far. read more

I typically visit this bakery about three times a year specifically for this cake, which I've purchased multiple times and always enjoyed. However, this time I was offered a cake that looked visibly dry and old. I had to speak with someone else before they agreed to swap it out. I also requested "Happy Birthday" to be written on the cake. Not only was the writing not shown to me before handing it over, but it was also done carelessly--"Happy Birthday" was written on one side and the name was placed on the other. For a birthday cake, especially one that will be in photos, the writing should be on the same side for visual consistency. I know this is possible because it's been done properly in the past. When a customer is paying over $48 for a cake, there should be more attention to detail and respect for their request. Additionally, speaking in a different language in front of customers can come off as unprofessional especially if speaking about them. Very unprofessional. read more

I can't pinpoint the exact reason why Mary's Bakery feels like a visit to your grandma's house - very comforting & you just want to stay there for a while! This bakery has the best sponge cakes! It is moist and not too sweet! I have relatives in Southern California who love these and I always buy them when I visit. They have other baked goods and pastries but mostly mediocre. Most Chinese bakeries sell similar items and taste pretty much the same! I would give this place more stars but the staff are not friendly and/or accommodating. They don't offer their help and I have encountered rude employees. This review is far overdue, but we always get our birthday cakes from Mary's Bakery! The flavors are always so good and the price point is great. I highly recommend the mango, chestnut, and coffee cakes. Typically, we would go to large chain bakeries but we love this bakery since it's nearby and a family owned business. It was my mom's birthday and we wanted to grab a slice of cake nearby as we picked up some boba. I had purchased a mango cake here many many many years ago. I think it's more impressive looking than what it actually tasted like but I know my mom loved mangos so if you do, then get that cake. But I was super surprised that it's now roughly $50? Goodness. I remember the one I got was like $25 or something around that price. I'll happily pay someone else to make this cake if it meant they had a nice sweet source of mangos. I definitely preferred the black forest since it had a whipped cream frosting versus the swiss buttercream of the hazelnut coffee. I just don't like swiss butter cream as it hardens and definitely becomes like butter on the cake or even has the texture of butter in your mouth. We were in Newark when we decided to find a new bakery to try. We found Mary's Bakery and it was close to where we were and decided to try. The place is quaint, just enough space for five to eight people to crowd it but you can smell the goodness of their products. Smelled so good. The staff, maybe the owners?, was soooo friendly. This Bakery is delicious, their breads are always baked perfectly and their cakes are so goood! Cakes are not too sweet, their creamy and fruit is always looking super fresh. I'll come stop by here randomly when I need to grab a quick cake for an occasion and always have nice encounters with the staff.
