TL;DR: most decent Mexican food in Southside, good Cali burrito In my opinion, Mexican food isn't a strong forte for Berkeley. I think Berkeley does Asian food best with sprinkles of other cultures, as well. That being said, I think La Burrita provides a decently reliable experience, moreso than other restaurants I've tried in the area. I suppose I could find reason to come back in the future, but not much about my few times there screamed "must-go". I ordered the California Burrito. CALIFORNIA BURRITO (3/5) - Pretty sizable, good burrito - Decent meat flavor and all - French fries and avocado added a lot to the flavor - Decent enough to fill you up, comes with chips Sometimes, the line can get a bit long and service becomes slower. Had a Super Vegie Burrito. I really wanted to like it. Very dissapointing. The flavor was way way too salty through out, which over powered any other flavor of the ingredients. There were very very little beans, too much sour cream. Not one bite was good. And the chips taste stale and not nice. Don't know why so many students are going there. My favorite moment at La Burrita was when my little sister at 13 years old came to visit me while i was at Cal. I took her to La Burrita in hopes of exposing her to some down and dirty food, that didn't come from our snooty hometown of Carmel, where they dont even HAVE a good cheap mexican eatery! Man I can't figure out how I survived my time there amongst the foie grois and arugala salads. ANYWAY....I asked her to go ahead and order...and she says to the gentleman at the register, "I will have a vegetarian with...chicken". 3 stars to the cashier for not cracking up at my sister, thereby not destroying her fragile pre-pubescent ego. Other than being open late and being accesible on those binge drinking(sorry mom!) nights in college, La Burrita has a great salsa bar (yummy) and HUGE burritos for $5. Haven't been here in a long, long time, so things might be different now. The food here is just all right, but they were one of the few late night options other than Top Dog next door. Their regular burritos are nothing spectacular...the meat was a bit dry for my taste. Their wet burrito (sounds so wrong) wasn't bad...different having all those unhealthy toppings slathered on top instead of inside the burrito. Tacos were average...nothing to specify as something that stands out or sucks. Plus points for their little salsa bar though. If it were closer, I would definitely go to Gordo's. But considering the other lack of options (especially late at night) and the decent portions to complement their student-friendly prices, certainly not a terrible way to satisfy those post drinking food urges. read more

Came here to order a steak super burrito and was disappointed. Instead of receiving a steak burrito, the guy behind the counter gave me a bean burrito. Unlike other places where burritos with meat are more expensive, I was charged the price of a steak burrito despite getting a bean burrito. This trip was disappointing. Another time I went, I tried to use a CampusCred voucher for $10 and the guy accidentally deducted only $5. It was a bit annoying that I had to assert that the voucher was for $10 a few times. Thank you Campuscred for the voucher this semester. You make this poor college girl studying for finals happy this week. Tried their cheesesteak burrito for the first time ever. This is a genius burrito. Ooey gooey cheese and beef plus generous portions of salsa, guac, and sour cream?? Bad for the heart but good for the tummy! My favorite part of the burrito was actually the grilled onions...lightly caramelized, soft but still had a bite to them. And all you can eat salsa bar. Nom. With my voucher ($10) I was able to get 2 small cheesesteak burritos (one for me and one for the roomie) and 1 horchata for only $2.95. And I had a bunch of credit from Campuscred to get the voucher so this meal was almost free. Atmosphere: I never really eat here cos there's barely any room and my apt is just up the street. Definitely a place to go for a quick meal if you're in a hurry. Service: The cashier was really nice and just had me write my name and voucher # down on a pad of paper since they didn't have the list of coupon redeemers printed out. Haven't actually eaten at the restaurant, but us optometry students always order food from them when we have meetings and need to feed lots of hungry students for cheap. Even when we order over a hundred of burrito, they warm and each tightly wrapped. I've had their chicken, steak, veggie, and carnitas burrito. I like them all except the veggie. For some reason the veggie is always runny and the rice just tastes like ketchup rice. Pretty good chips and guacamole, their salsa is ok. I don't know if I would ever crave their burrito enough to go eat at the restaurant, but I highly recommend getting catered by them for meetings. read more

Oh yes, I remember now. I used to come to La Burrita as a stressed-out, cranky architecture student at UC Bekeley. 1 AM food runs to satisfy a late night craving as I worked tirelessly on my studio projects. I came here recently, and it was still the same good Mexican food. Overall, the closest thing in Berkeley to the Mexican food I'm used to back in LA. My recommendation is to come here for a quick lunch, late night craving, or order to-go. MY USUALS Vegetarian tostada: When I was a vegetarian, I use to order the veggie tostada with a side of guacamole. It's a pretty decent staple, and generally healthy. I'm a small person, so if you have a big appetite, this will definitely NOT satisfy. Lengua soft tacos: When they started offering these, I could not believe it! This was my favorite taco in LA, and each bite reminded me of those good ol' pleasures. I'm not sure if this is still on their menu, but if it is, definitely order! Crispy beef taco special: Two ground beef tacos in a hard shell with a soft drink of your choice. Good bang for your buck. (Tip: If you flash a smile you can usually convince them to let you upgrade your soft drink to a horchata.) Horchata: A staple rice drink. One word: Mmmmm... I love this drink. I had the urge for some authentic Mexican food today after a long day at work. A friend and I dropped by here to grab some burritos. I've been here a couple times before when I attended Cal, so I ordered a California burrito and horchata. The food came very fast and was super good. The burrito (not the healthiest of options, but hey sue me) was hit and fresh. They came with a side of chips as well that were warm and crispy. The horchata could have been a little more sweet, but wasn't half bad either. I like la burrita. Its not bad, its definitely not too good, and it's got a strong feminist tie in it's name. But seriously, the Berkeley Mexican food scene is severely lacking, which is why i say I like this place. Now that Tacos Sinaloa is open, I almost never ever go here. Got two carne asada tacos. Surprisingly, the carne asada didn't taste like that classic smokey, soft, slightly chewy, juicy taste. I was pretty sad. One of the not so busy restaurants on the infamous never anywhere to park -Durant Street in college town serving delicious Mexican meals. Usually this place is not crowded, the prices are affordable, the portions are sufficient and the environment is clean. However, the manors of staff are hit or miss. Most of the time the male staff are friendly and get the orders correct. But the women staff are unkind and make mistakes: On my last trip there, 1/30/21: 2 of my 3 orders were incorrect, when I returned (with ALL of the food) and politely requested that the order was corrected the woman cooking ignored my request and insisted on remaking the same dish. The other woman near the prep station was very unkind while made very loud and inappropriate remarks "oh my" and "gosh she's too much". Needless to say I will NOT be returning. I finally tried La Burrita recently after hearing lots about it. It was alright, didn't necessarily live up to all the hype I have heard but still good. It was crazy packed in there but the service went by quick enough. Big plus that it is open so late, and even later on Fridays and Saturdays. Perfect when you need to grab an easy bite to eat after going out. Its a pretty small location so it gets super crowded and the line goes out the door. I got the California burrito. Everyone has always told me to try it. It was pretty good but about halfway through eating it I just got tired of it. My mom makes such delicious Mexican food, therefore my judgment is pretty harsh every time I walk into a Mexican food place. But wow this place won my heart over ! Absolutely amazing food and the tastiest aguas frescas!!!! The burrito I got was perfect for me because it wasn't to messy or greasy like it is in most places. It tasted fresh and the Asada meat was so juicy and good. The salsas were also amazing, they have quite the variety. I personally really enjoyed the salsa verde for my chips. As for the agua frescas; I tried the Jamaica, Horchata, and I mixed the mango and fresa. All of them were very delicious probably the best ones I've had, not watered down like in most places. You really get the real taste with these aguas. The staff: Friendly and helpful, what more can you ask for! They made me and my friend feel so welcome here! This place is horrible. The establishment itself is dirty, the wait times are inconsistent and too long, and the food is trash. On one hand, it's not authentic Mexican food by any standard. On the other hand-- it's not even good American Mexican food. I would go to Taco Bell right next door any day, and that's kind of sad. Their wet burrito looked like it wanted to die and their chicken fajita salad encompassed all the worst qualities of both chicken fajitas and salad. For what it is - cheap and authentic Mexican food - I absolutely love it. For the prices, the quantity and quality of food is awesome! The portions here are large and always yummy. My favorite thing to get is the Wet Burrito - so much salsa, so much guac, and so much sour cream! The inside of the burrito has plentiful beans, rice, and the meat of your choosing. La Burrita has everything I love about a place: huge portions, reasonable prices (quite cheap considering I can split one dish into two meals!), and fantastic quality! Service is really fast, and really efficient. There's even more salsas and condiments for to grab at a little station on the side! For a small shop on Southside, it really makes good use of its space (limited but enough seating) and funnily enough is right next to Taco Bell. If you're getting the Wet Burrito though, remember to get it here in Southside at this location rather than the one in Northside near Soda/Cory Hall! The one in Northside does not add all the yummy sauces on its wet burrito for some reason. read more

Best decision ever made. My sister and are are raging about how good this place is. We got a super shrimp burrito, Regular chicken burrito, super steak burrito, and a super chicken quesadilla. And let me tell you they all were hitting. Everything was delicious. No complaints here. Also on top of being delicious, they were super fast. Came with my friend on Thursday night for a convenient takeout. We waited ~10 minutes to order and get our food. The music while we waited was loud and repetitive...so personally, I would just grab food to-go. I got the Torta, which tasted okay, but it came with chips! They put a lot of guac on the bread that it became soggy though... The reason why I'm giving this place a 1 star is that my friend got their Carne Asada Fries and got pretty bad food poisoning (from sour cream maybe?). I love La Burrita because they've been so reliably good the last 4 years of my time at Berkeley! The staff is usually friendly and very efficient, I can get my takeout within 10 min of ordering. GET THE LENGUA BURRITO. It has amazing texture and flavor and the burrito comes with everything good. I love the way they wrap the burrito tightly and everything tends to be well-distributed within the burrito. I also like the nacho chips that comes with every order, as well as the little salsa bar. My taco must have been just sitting there for quite some time after it was made because by the time I opened it, it was extremely soggy. Both tortillas were soaked almost all the way through. Worst burrito I've ever had in my life, and that includes burritos I have left in my fridge for over a week. I've been here about three times and I feel insulted every time I decide to give this place a chance, it's cheap for sure but I wouldn't eat the burritos here for free. I don't know what it is but the ingredients don't mesh together at all. From the tortilla they use to wrap it to the meat inside it's all bad. Best place to go for burritos on Berkeley's Southside. It was ridiculously convenient when I lived right on the corner of Durant & Telegraph. Wet burritos are huge, to the point where you must be equipped with fork and knife to eat them. Also -- **Super Nachos**, son! Tortilla chips drenched in everything you could possibly conceive: cheese, beans, meat, sour cream, guac. The perfect late snack choice for the college student. It was the night of Halloween, and this place had a line that stretched about a 1/4 of a mile long. Or so it seemed, since I was tired, drunk, hungry, and my feet were killing me from wearing 3-inch high heeled boots. Well, the long wait was worth it. I was satisfied. I have to penalize them for serving ground beef burritos. Mexicans do not use ground beef in their cuisine. As someone who is Mexican, not only was I disappointed in the food, I was MORE disappointed in their service. The men speak in a vulgar manner amongst one another and I've overheard them a couple of times gossiping about the customers in Spanish (since most customers are Asian or White). I'm very disappointed to see this in a business. I also had one instance where I ordered chicken quesadilla and super nachos. I know I clearly order chicken quesadillas. Then I was handed a burrito, and I went back to claim my quesadillas. Since I had paid with card, I signed the receipt BUT the paper you sign doesn't even have your order on it so it's not like you can check if your order is right. I looked at the cashier, and just as he thought I was going to complain again, I handed him the burrito and took my card out and said, "I want chicken quesadillas and go ahead and charge me again". Chipotle's line came out, all the way onto the sidewalk, so I decided to seize the opportunity and try the famous La Burrita before graduating. I like tacos, not burritos, so I ordered the Taco Rancheros with shredded chicken, for less than $5. So far, so good. The tacos took a while to prepare, for whatever reason. And even worse, they don't give you salsa--you have to get it at the stand, in these tiny plastic containers. The result is that it takes FOREVER to get your sauces. Bunch of dudes with 5 containers lined up all pretty, slowly filling them up one at a time. The tacos were forgettable. And tiny. Chicken, onion, and brown sauce...boring. Call me strange but I like cheese on my tacos...and corn is pretty good too. As for the free nachos, I ran out of salsa immediately. I regretted not filling up 5 containers as well... I've never written a Yelp review before, but I was so moved by the lack of customer service in this establishment that I set up an account so I can tell people how awful the manager treats his customers. To boil it down: the manager (mustache, black hair, ordering people around in the back) is not only unpleasant but downright HOSTILE towards his customers and employees. The full story: I ordered a burrito to-go and they got the order wrong. I'm a vegetarian and after I got home, it became clear that the burrito had meat in it. I'm not a fussy customer and understand mistakes happen, so I went back to the store and very politely asked for my original order. Several things happened: 1) The manager adamantly refused to make another burrito for me because he insisted that I made the wrong order. We went back and fourth several times until I proved him wrong by showing him the receipt. I thought I threw the receipt out and (thankfully) did not. However, what happened to the customer is always right? 2) He began yelling at the worker who took my order in Spanish and forced him to apologize to me (utterly humiliating for the worker and myself). After that embarrassing show the manager shook his head at me and said, "Sorry, he's stupid. Not speak English very good" I WAS FLOORED. What a JERK. 3) I asked the manager if I could keep the mistake burrito rather then throwing it away as a show of good customer service. Most restaurants let you keep the mistake food, and I planned on giving to my dog Jackie. He flat out REFUSED, held out the brown paper bag holding my freshly made burrito saying "You want this, give me that" and pointed at the mistake burrito. I was frustrated and embarrassed at being talked down to but did as he asked. 4) As I walked out I noticed on the receipt that they had over-charged me (only by 70 cents or so) so I went back and again asked for the mistake burrito considering they had over-charged me. He refused AGAIN and pulled change from the tip jar to hand to me instead. 5) After I turned down his change, I asked for his name. He asked me why and I told him I wanted to refer to him by name on my Yelp review. He refused to give it to me considering I'm "not the police."
