I've never written a Yelp review before, but I was so moved by the lack of customer service in this establishment that I set up an account so I can tell people how awful the manager treats his customers. To boil it down: the manager (mustache, black hair, ordering people around in the back) is not only unpleasant but downright HOSTILE towards his customers and employees. The full story: I ordered a burrito to-go and they got the order wrong. I'm a vegetarian and after I got home, it became clear that the burrito had meat in it. I'm not a fussy customer and understand mistakes happen, so I went back to the store and very politely asked for my original order. Several things happened: 1) The manager adamantly refused to make another burrito for me because he insisted that I made the wrong order. We went back and fourth several times until I proved him wrong by showing him the receipt. I thought I threw the receipt out and (thankfully) did not. However, what happened to the customer is always right? 2) He began yelling at the worker who took my order in Spanish and forced him to apologize to me (utterly humiliating for the worker and myself). After that embarrassing show the manager shook his head at me and said, "Sorry, he's stupid. Not speak English very good" I WAS FLOORED. What a JERK. 3) I asked the manager if I could keep the mistake burrito rather then throwing it away as a show of good customer service. Most restaurants let you keep the mistake food, and I planned on giving to my dog Jackie. He flat out REFUSED, held out the brown paper bag holding my freshly made burrito saying "You want this, give me that" and pointed at the mistake burrito. I was frustrated and embarrassed at being talked down to but did as he asked. 4) As I walked out I noticed on the receipt that they had over-charged me (only by 70 cents or so) so I went back and again asked for the mistake burrito considering they had over-charged me. He refused AGAIN and pulled change from the tip jar to hand to me instead. 5) After I turned down his change, I asked for his name. He asked me why and I told him I wanted to refer to him by name on my Yelp review. He refused to give it to me considering I'm "not the police." Worst burrito I've ever had in my life, and that includes burritos I have left in my fridge for over a week. I've been here about three times and I feel insulted every time I decide to give this place a chance, it's cheap for sure but I wouldn't eat the burritos here for free. I don't know what it is but the ingredients don't mesh together at all. From the tortilla they use to wrap it to the meat inside it's all bad. The gluttonous day was far from over after hitting up Top Dog next door. If the line for La Burrita snakes out onto the sidewalk, don't be too worried, the counter/cashier is just a few steps from the front entrance. Above the front counter, a giant whiteboard outlines the menu; make note that its absent of the usual variety of [meat] choices that can be found at more authentic taquerias. Chicken, steak, ground beef, and (though its not on their website menu) shrimp. The indoor dining area is minuscule and there are probably too many tables/chairs for the space allocated making the little space feel cramped and uncomfortable. There are also a handful of rickety tables in the back/patio (al fresco!). The food, though a far cry from anything I'd call authentic, wasn't bad. It was flavorful and fresh, and cooked-to-order, if the moderate wait is any indication. In my case, I had the shrimp burrito (Rice, Grilled Onions, Bell Peppers, Pineapple, Salsa, Lettuce and Sour Cream). Even without the rice, the burrito was hearty and surprisingly filled with shrimp in almost every bite. Then there's the self serve salsa bar. What is it about self serve salsa bars? Is it our inherent "oh, sh*t... free?!" consumer response? Is it that they totally cater to a yearning to be a culinary mastermind? Or maybe we're just relieved to find some modicum of control over something, ANYTHING, in our topsy-turvy lives, even if its the small consolation of condiments we can call "ours"? No? Just me? Nevermind. I have issues. Not a bad place for affordable eats, lack of authenticity not withstanding and crowded walkways allowing. Wouldn't seek it out, but if I'm in the area, sure... __________________________________________ Next time, I'll order nachos, just for the fact that they make no apologies for their use of a microwave. YOU MUST KNOW WHAT TO ORDER! If you go to any restaurant, most places don't make EVERYTHING on their menu very well. With that said, most of the items on the La Burrita menu is mediocre but the item that redeems this entire restaurant is their SHRIMP BURRITO. WHY SHOULD I ORDER THE SHRIMP BURRITO? 1. The Great Taco War... I was reveling in my recent Victory at El Grullense, being a bit smug, handing out nylons to the local hotties. Dive Bar - we drank, we smoked. Ok, then Jack , you get the enemy a bit tipsy, then... AMBUSH. Jack: "Oh, I know this little taco joint, let's hit that." Indeed, how long have you had this one tucked away?? The tacos are huge, absolutely staggering amounts of beef. Salsa bar with great choices, including a killer hot sauce. They give you your tacos on a tray and literally throw 11 or 12 chips aboard - like shrapnel. It was about 11p and the place was alive with everybody getting their late-night fix. I've been here several times over the past four years and I will say that La Burrita is a decent place to go for cheap food that will fill you up. In terms of Mexican food it's really not that good. Good amount of vegetarian options and even the small sized burrito is pretty substantial. Since it is in the center of UC Berkeley's Southside, only a few blocks from campus, expect to see mostly college students throwing back late night burritos and nachos. I will say that most everything comes with housemade tortilla chips that are greasy and tasty and there are lots of salsas of different flavors and spice levels that are good to dip them in or put on your burrito but otherwise the food does not have much flavor. read more

Was hungry and was craving a good burrito. Coming here, it was a success. It was an early Saturday afternoon and there were two patrons in there. The menu hangs over the counter with the register and a salsa bar. They had burritos, tacos, tortas, nachos, etc. The salsa bar had at least five different sauces plus lemons and limes. I ordered the Steak Fajita burrito to go with extra sour cream (yum!) and took a mild chunky salsa container and the green jalepeno sauce. The burrito was small in the bag in comparison to other restaurants. But when I bit into it for the first time it was sooo good. We returned as promised. The kitchen is to the right, the register and burrito counter in the middle and 5-6 tables of 2 and the salsa bar wraps up the place. I believe they do have outdoor seating in the back. The menu is on a large board behind the counter. Your standard fare - choice of burrito, taco, and some combo dishes. We decided to try their taco with carnitas - were told they don't use carnitas? Ok, what are our meat choices? chicken, beef or steak. Alright, let's get the carne asada. We also ordered a horchata. The total was about $4 ONLY! Ok, the horchata was not bad. Not cold enough, they didn't give too much ice - surprise! The taco was good. For the price, you get two corn tortilla, lots of flavorful meat, lettuce and cheese. The salsa bar is AWESOME - I scooped a couple of the hot sauce and grabbed a container of the salsa for the chips that the taco came with - all for $4! We will return to try something else. LOWDOWN: Need to satisfy your Mexican food craving and need it fast? This is the place to go, especially if you're a student and don't want to stray too far from campus for a decent Mexican meal. FOOD/DRINKS: I always get the CHICKEN ENCHILADAS but ask for extra sauce and less cheese on top for it can be overwhelming. MEAT NACHOS, WET BURRITO, and the SUPER MEAT QUESADILLA are great options too. HORCHATA is a great compliment to anything but very sugary. Not the best Mexican food I've ever had. Getting a special, carne asada burrito here is always a colon-ary delight. From day 1 back in '96 to this day, I've returned here like a crack addict returns to her pusher. I don't want to play up their food. Cheap, college mexican food can only be taken so far. But their burritos smothered in their Special Red Salsa is the BEST! AND you can get that at roughly $5 (give or take depending on what size you get). Throughout college their large burritos would fill me to the point of belt-busting pain. The Food is low quality and greesy as hell, but it does make the perfect drunk munchies. Just like its neighbor, Top Dog, La Burrita is open til 2am every night. There is a few tables inside the place, so you don't have to stuff your face outside like the Top Dog customers. All orders come with a side of chips. The first time I had La Burrita I was shocked (in a bad way). Microwaves?? Unheard of!! This place wouldnt last a day in San Diego. NorCal Mexican food is just weak. Even the places ppl rave about on Mission St in SF. It just doesn't compare to places in SD. But I digress. Having endured Berkeley for four years, I got used to La Burrita. It's not bad for NorCal Mexican food, especially in Berkeley late at night. Hence three stars. Also, the Durant location is better than their Northside location. And while i do miss this cute little box of a restaurant near my former school, i can remember it being just... "OK" The only acceptable items on the menu are the burritos. They are big and cheap (like, $5). Juicy and filling. I always ordered the Carne Asada Burrito with Guacamole. I wouldn't recommend any other items (i've tried them). This place defined my college experience... I probably ate here at least twice a week for the five years I lived in Berkeley... and at least twice a month for the rest of my time in the Bay Area. My burrito of choice is the Ground Beef Special (#9?). You have to eat it with the spicy green sauce for the full effect. People will say, "you can get better burritos in the Mission or LA"... In actuality should I be giving this place 5 stars? Probably not. Did I think this place was practically fine dining when I was college? Of course. The same people still work there, the menu is still the exact same, the salsa bar is the same, the crappy soda fountain is still the same, and I think the prices are still the same. Most of the time in college I opted for the chicken or carne burrito and a small is pretty filling. This last time I went with chicken. Of course I get it with guac and sour cream (you know I'm drunk when I get sour cream), and I'm a pinto bean kind of guy. Even if your not a fan of La Burrita you have to be impressed with how tight they wrap those burritos...there's nothing falling out of those!!! And of course in typical drunken La Burrita night fashion I woke up the next morning with a ton of extra salsa and chunks of tin foil from perfectly wrapped burrito scattered throughout my hotel room (only in college it was my dorm room or bedroom in frat house). It definitely doesn't rival the size of a Chipotle burrito, but it's still a good amount for a meal. Everything you get always comes with chips and salsa. It's open until 2am in the morning so it's great for those 4th meal of the day cravings. I'd also recommend getting the nachos. The nachos taste great, but it's a HUGE portion and I'd recommend sharing it with another person unless you are one hungry person. For some reason, I remember their burritos being HUGE in college, but the super burrito is actually a pretty regular size. The super burrito is only $1 more than the regular, and I always wonder what the point of a cheese and guac-less burrito is. To upgrade from a small to a large, it's also only $1 more. It used to be the best late night food, and I've never tried anything other than the burritos. They also have a salsa bar on the side. Even if the line looks long, it moves a lot more quickly than the Top Dog line next door. You get charged something like 30 cents extra for using a credit card. I recently began attending test preparation courses at the Hotel Durant in Berkeley, and am still struggling to find all the best eats in the area. In terms of Mexican food, La Burrita is the place to go when you're on the go and only have about 5-10 minutes to spare. Food preparation is very quick, portions are quite decent, and the prices are fair. Another thing I liked about this place is the free substitutes you can get for your burrito. I always opt for a wheat tortilla in my small steak super. :) And unlike that place across the street, I haven't noticed any blatant sanitary issues, but here's to hoping that will stay the same for my future visits. The Honest Truth: For mexican food in NorCal, its not bad. Being from San Diego, it isn't that great. When I am craving mexican food in Berkeley, I will come here. Usually I get the nachos or the wet burrito. The meat isn't flavored too well and the tortilla is kinda chewy, but enough salsa will mask the flavor and its a filling meal if you're hungry. Details: La burrita is great for the late night meal. It's open till 2 and the service is pretty fast. They have a salsa bar, which is something the other mexican places don't have up here. Their carne asada isn't very soft or flavored well, but their portions are sizeable and enough to make me full. Their tortilla is kinda chewy and doughy an the bulk of their burritos goes to the rice and beans. I enjoy their nachos, although you have to eat it fast or else the chips go soggy pretty quickly. In general, the flavors of their food aren't too outstanding, but covering it with salsa does the job. Again, not the greatest mexican food, but it gets the job done in Berkeley. read more

I would give La Burrita 4 stars, but I'm throwing an extra star in for sentimental value-- my husband and I met at Cal and one of the first meals he ever bought for me was a super chicken burrito. What can I say, I guess I'm a cheap date. There were many nights when we lived in the dorms that a group of us would go to La Burrita to pick up burritos in the wee hours of the morning. After all these years, the burritos still taste the same as the first time I had it. I hate eating dry burritos, so their "liquidy" burritos are right up my alley. Actually, I wouldn't call them liquidy, just moist. I especially like when the cheese is still hot and melty. At first I wasn't impressed with the size of the burrito and I just ordered a shrimp burrito too (most places are pretty skimpy when it comes to shrimp) but later discovered the burritos aren't huge because they don't over fill them with unwanted fillers like tons of rice n beans. La Burrita - Large shrimp burrito! - Mexican Near Me - Berkeley, California

This is an all purpose place. When I first came to Cal, I needed to find a Mexican place that could compare to my love for King Taco back home in So Cal... La Burrita definitely did not replace my love, but it did find a way to be appealing and a way to keep me a frequent customer. My favorite food item here are there "Tacos Rancheros." You get three tacos, your choice of meat, and a side of chips. They're delicious. I would add some lime and get their green sauce. Perfect lunch meal. What else is great about La Burrita? Well, aside from the friendly staff, it's a fantastic late night food stop. Leave the bar, arrive and order, and then FEAST! Anyone remotely tipsy, or beyond that point will most definitely enjoy their late night adventure into this place. All in all, it's one of my Berkeley staples. It doesn't get five stars because it's not a stellar place, but it is great, and good, and the service is great! read more

This place was pretty good and reasonably priced, however I would probably rather go somewhere closer to my house next time. I went here because this Thai place I wanted to go to was closed. I got a veggie burrito without sour cream and I would say that the fillings were kind of all bunched up and not really evenly distributed throughout the burrito. Some bites had lots of beans, some had lots of salsa etc. I wish I had gotten a burrito with less items so that the burrito would have been more consistent. If you went to Berkeley and never went to La Burrito...you're probably pretty lame. La Burr as we called it was THE place to go after midnight if you were starving. Go here on any weekday night and you will see a long line of loyal La Burrita addicts. The burritos are actually above average and priced fairly so it is a hit with the students.
