I anticipated outstanding Szechuan cuisine and I was not disappointed. But that's where, what could have been a superb experience began and ended. I'm writing this detailed review, because I think it's important to be warned if you are bringing a group of more than four people.
We arrived at 5:00pm, stating we are a club and would be a group of 8-10 dining. One would think that a group dining that early would be welcomed with some enthusiasm, but it was not to case. The experience started by noticing the very loud music inside and on the deck area. We asked if it could be lowered and were told, "NO, it's part of the vibe". I could have bought into that response had there been a bustling crowd, but we were the only people in the restaurant. The music was turned down about an hour or so later, but the staff's inhospitable manner set a negative tone.
The service started out, at best, average and diminished throughout dinner to the point of very poor. The server stated that a lot of people eat here family style, which is fine, but each of us selected individual menu items. The dishes arrived, with the servers barking out the dishes by name, instead of being placed in front of the individual... in some instances just being plopped down randomly on the table, leaving us to figure out which dish was ordered by whom.
The server had little interest (or training) in making each guest's experience pleasurable... food, drinks just showed up, and we had to break from our conversations to HELP them do THEIR job.
Water glasses sat empty, no attempt at keeping them filled. Dirty first course dishes remained on the table through the entirety of the meal. As did empty beer and wine glasses.
A very rare matter was revealed quickly... no separate checks. NO EXCEPTIONS! And no attempt from the server was made to ease one of the members of our club who declined to eat or drink; the server was fine letting that person sit there, unhappy. A spokesman from our club stepped in and implored the server to write a separate tab for the member (he required a receipt for his meal for business purposes). Had our spokesperson not intervened, that member would have sat there with no food or drink. Unbelievable that the server would have been fine with that.
Note to business people dining here... good luck getting a separate tab for your accountant or employer.
We accepted the restaurants decision on this point, figuring we would figure out settlement of the tab among ourselves later. When the time came to settle the tab, most paid in cash. Unfortunately, the staff made those paying by credit card another unpleasant and grueling experience. The staff would not allow each of our party to pay their portion of the tab with their credit card, the staff said they had to pay a percentage of the remaining balance, which made no sense whatsoever. How difficult would it have been to run those few credit cards with their individual charges, already having the cash in hand from our other members?
The final disappointment was the automatic 20% gratuity on the tab. This is no surprise for large groups, but considering the amateurish service, and the inhospitable attitude, the gratuity should have gone to the chef and the kitchen staff. The food is the showpiece here.
I noticed several people coming in for carry out, it all makes sense now that I've eaten here.
Summary: Go for the food, and maybe if you are dining alone, with a companion or a group of four, it may work out. Groups of more than four diners... beware, bring cash and be prepared for bad service. 5 Stars for food, 0 Stars for staff and service. read more
