Everything I've gotten from here is always hot and fresh. They are a quick-serve counter service and are very kind and courteous. No frills atmosphere but good food that's not floating in grease. They pay careful attention for allergies and offer vegan and gluten-free options. Love their Chow Mei Fun! After a long day of traveling from Los Angeles, with a four hour layover in Austin, we arrived at our hotel in Mount Pleasant, South Carolina after 9 PM. The kids were hungry, and a quick review of yelp demonstrated that most restaurants around here close down around 9 PM at least on the weekdays. One exception was Flaming Wok, who offered an extra hour of openness. I've had some rough experiences with Chinese food outside of the greater Southern California area. I know we are hated, I know we are spoiled, and I know that there are seven different kinds of Chinese food within 10 miles of my home address. Yes, seven. But we had pizza last night, and to be honest, I didn't much feel like driving around town in the rental car looking for places that were still open. Instead, we ordered up a few dishes on GrubHub, cognizant of the fact that each one was $15 or more. After delivery and service fees... Whatever the hell those are... We came in at 115 bucks whatever, we're on vacation, and as my dad says in Vegas, "we are not here for a haircut." In retrospect, a haircut probably would've been a better idea. When the delivery guy handed me my bag, I sort of wondered if there was another one. Nope, $115 worth of food fit nicely into a small single plastic bag each $20 dish fit nicely into a small size Chinese paper delivery container. Hot and sour soup was neither of those things. Notably, they used fresh mushrooms; I know that because they were still fresh and uncooked floating at the top of the soup. For some reason, they also had shredded carrot in there instead of wood fungus. Zero pieces of chicken. Zero pieces of tofu. Was this the end of the night scrape? Next dish: Kung pow chicken. I think they started with a big handful of chopped carrots and chopped celery, threw in a little bit of cornstarch and chicken bullion, a handful of chopped chicken, and called it done. Oh, wait, there was a peanut or two in there. But no chilis, no flavor, no spice. Noticing a trend yet? Beef with broccoli: in fairness, this was the most consistent, despite the fact that the small paper container was $19 and change, even before we paid all that GrubHub service fee nonsense. Baking soda - softened beef, broccoli, brown gravy. Pretty standard fair. Orange chicken: breaded pieces of chicken served over but I guess was over cooked broccoli, smothered in orange sauce. No real tangy or Zingy on this one either. No spice, pretty bland. Seems like the kind of orange chicken. They would serve at a middle school that is beholden to state nutritional laws. The final mistake, chicken, chow mein: Chow mein literally translates to fried noodle, a factoid. I picked up in four years of working for a Chinese American back, and 25 years in a predominantly Chinese American school district. Somehow this place messed that, as our "chow mein" was more of a chop Suey... Not a noodle to be found, a small Chinese food container with soggy, wet vegetables, hunks of zucchini, cabbage, and assorted other decidedly non-noodle things floating around in there. Did I mention this delightful hotel meal was north of $100? I should've known better, and I really do hate to malign a place, but this was absolutely terrible. I felt ripped off, the Family was sort of incredulous about the whole thing, even the kids made several comments that they've had better Chinese food at Panda Express... and that's saying something. I probably should have taken a clue when I was waiting for my food to arrive in the lobby and the gal behind the hotel counter asked what restaurant I'm waiting for... When I told her flaming wok, she said, "never heard of it." Bad omen. It would be nice to find a good Chinese place for delivery here in Charleston before we leave in a few days, but all I can say at this point is that I've identified one place that we will not try again. Would've been better off going to Trader Joe's down the street and getting frozen Trader Ming meals for the hotel microwave. read more

Don't write this place off just because you can't eat inside!! They are still recovering from COVID, but their food is really something. My husband's orange chicken came out piping hot and was not overly breaded. It was crunchy and crispy on the outside and the chicken was tender and juicy on the inside. I had the Moo Gai and it was phenomenal-- just what my immune system needed after a week of being sick. The gentle flavors of the veggies and chicken combined with rice and brothy sauce so nourishing and easy on the stomach. Great price and portion too! read more

Don't bother with the online menu on "their" site... out of date, cost was $30 more than listed on that menu. They recommend going to Uber/GrubHub for a current menu. The front person isn't very nice, neither on phone or in person, FYI. Pass on the Spring Rolls and Rice. Both made their way to the trash. When did Sesame Chicken stop having SESAME? The Sesame Chicken and Orange Chicken were both good... I'd order it again, but only that!!! Bottom line, I can stand poor customer service for great food but not for mediocre. Yikes, I just realized that I haven't written a review for my favorite Chinese take-out restaurant East of the Cooper River. I've always enjoyed my menu selections at the Flaming Wok and my take-out order, today, was no exception; however, I do have a confession ... I always order the same 2 items! After a warm greeting from Natalie, Tom (her husband) chimed in, then asked, "House Chow Mein, steamed, with no sauce, right?" "Correct," I replied, then I added a small hot and sour soup to my take out order. ($4.75 and $1.75, respectively). As I was settling in to wait for my order, I couldn't help but notice the clean, shiny tables. By the time I snapped and posted two photos on Yelp! my order was ready. Wow! I was in and out in under 10 minutes ... and man, the bag was really heavy! How was the food? Look at my photo! OK ... it may not appeal to you, but, I'm struggling with my weight right now (I've gained 30 lbs. since moving to Chucktown) and this simple, clean preparation got me through another meal. And, in case you're wondering, I didn't pass on the bag of yummy noodles ... I really did give them to my hub. (BTW, the soup was perfect, too ... lots of goodies and a tasty broth.) BONUS: I noticed they switched from plastic ware to mostly paper containers. Thanks for being more sustainable! For "typical Chinese takeout," which has the same menu as every other Chinese restaurant, this might be some of the BEST I've ever had in South Carolina, New Jersey, or New York. I order here about once a month and I drive from downtown Charleston because no other Chinese take-out in the area comes close. Spring Rolls and Fried Crab+Cream Cheese Dumplings : appear to be made in store and are always hot and delicious. I can distinguish actual vegetables inside the spring rolls. At other spots these appetizers are usually mass-produced frozen offerings that are soaked in oil. At Flaming Wok they are delicious. Even the sweet and sour sauce seems better than what sometimes has the texture of glue at other places. The Wonton Soup : the broth is very tasty and not too salty and the wontons taste like they are freshly made. If I'm wrong, then I have been fooled, but the dough on the dumplings tastes like it was made fresh and the filling is generous and delicious. At other places I would be afraid to order wonton soup because who knows what they are throwing in there. The special touch - Chinese Mixed Vegetables and Vegetable Lo Mein. My favorite thing about Flaming Wok is the beautiful vegetable dishes they offer with obviously fresh veggies. The C.M.V. has a diverse selection including peas, broccoli, carrots, peppers, water chestnuts etc. and best of all really quality mushrooms. Other restaurants in the area literally throw a bunch of bland frozen broccoli in a Styrofoam container and have the nerve to sell that trash. After reading some of the other reviews, I'm shocked; it is clear that some of these Mount Plastic folk have never had to work in a hot kitchen or have never been to a Chinese takeout place that is actually "dirty" or "rude." But everyone seems rude when you're entitled. Flaming Wok is a gem, the food is amazing, and some people just suck I guess. Thank you Flaming Wok we love you! read more

If you go to LA, forget Chinese food as you know it. Any other kind of far Eastern, yes. Outside of LA, yes. In town? No. Those containers with chopsticks you see on TV that make you wish for take-out tonight? No. Happily, being on the east coast means normal Chinese food. And my family's tradition for New Year's Eve is set a beautiful table, eat Chinese, open gifts, have champagne. So after a quick trip to East Cooper ER that afternoon, still had time for Chinese. But where? Got some recommendations but lots were closed, couldn't decide, whatever. Chose Flaming Wok. Great choice. Natalie was so nice and helpful. Food was delicious. We got Hunan shrimp (the spicier black bean sauce) which was great. Mai fun is hard to screw up and this could have been more flavorful and had more veggies, but it's a good filler and there was tons of it. Lots of egg, too. Spring rolls very good, though lately I like a good unhealthy egg roll so I'll have to try that. The food was fresh, the delivery was fast and friendly, the price was totally right. First time here. Not sure if it they were having an off day or what. I ordered beef teriyaki and ham fried rice. I was not impressed. Portions are smaller than other Chinese places. They charge extra for items like forks and plates. There's a list of "extras" hanging up. I thought that was kind of odd. Not really the friendliest for out of town folks. Beef Teriyaki - I got four 6" skewers. They were over cooked, tough, and very salty. It tasted like they used fermented bean paste. Not really what I was expecting since most other places it's a sweet teriyaki flavored. Ham Fried Rice - It looked good, but lacked in taste. All I could taste was the wok. It needed a little more something. If I closed my eyes, I wouldn't really know I was eating fried rice. Once in awhile I could taste the ham. I really couldn't taste the rice. Just an FYI, I'm pretty sure it's SPAM. I'm Ok with that because I do like SPAM. I know it's not for everyone. The rice didn't even fill to the top of the container. Usually it's solid block because it's forced closed. I'm probably not going back there again. There are other places in town that are better in my opinion. First visit was a success - we will definitely be back. Compared to a few other Chinese takeout places in Mt Pleasant, this one tops my list for food quality and flavors. They accommodated my request to spice up our dishes and they were perfectly seasoned. Plenty of shrimp in our chow mei fun. Fresh broccoli in our garlic broccoli. I wasn't sure what to expect when I arrived because the woman who answered the phone for our order was very brief, on the cusp of gruffness. But I had no issues with her when I arrived and the gentleman who prepared our meal was super friendly. The restaurant is small with a few tables if you want to eat there. We have Ordered from Flaming Wok many times, and we quickly decided on getting sweet and sour chicken from Flaming Wok. The sweet And sour sauce was literally sweet and sour water. It had no flavor and was so thin it wouldn't stick to the chicken! We called and instead of making it right I was insulted when told that is what sweet and sour sauce is like, when I tried to explain that I have been eating sweet and sour for decades and know that what I got was watered down I was insulted a second time when he just kept talking over me! Flaming Wok is a pretty normal Chinese take out place, with a normal selection of food. I would rate the overall taste better than most, with their LoMein being really good. You can get most lunch combos for around $7, but upgrade the rice to noddles and add an egg roll, then it's $11+. Staff is pretty nice and very quick with your order. read more

This place is pretty good! We showed up, not knowing the menu, and ordered to go. We ordered 3 items for the 2 of us, which was a mistake! The options are quart or pint.. but it is more like quart or gallon! They really pack the food in those boxes, so two people are probably okay sharing two pints! We had the beef lo mean, general two chicken and kung pao chicken. What really impressed me was how fresh the veggies were in all of our dishes. You could tell they were using high quality ingredients in everything they prepared for us. Our food took only about 10 minutes to whip up (though the place was empty). I have walked by and saw the multiple hand written signs on the windows about prices, dont come in etc. I should have heeded them. I ordered the luncheon special for $6.15. When I picked up my order I was told it was $9.80, plus there was a Sprite in my bag I never ordered. One of my staples for Chinese take-out and is very consistent. My only complaint and it's a very small one, at least not big enough for me not to eat there regularly, is the fortune cookies. Sometimes I get one sometimes I don't, and when I do they are usually stale. But overall I have a very good, tasty experience every time I go there. Let me pass along a few tips when calling in. Look up the menu before you call, know what you want (I mean come on its a Chinese restaurant who doesn't always order the same thing), and have your $hit together. I've read some reviews that complain about the customer service, I'm assuming these people consistently get bad customer service where ever they go because they are simply bad customers.
