This was our first stop during our weekend trip to Charleston. Xiao Bao is a Michelin recommended restaurant that's packed with Asian fusion flavor. The place itself is on the smaller side. Parking can be tough, but we lucked out with one of their spots. There's outdoor seating and tables and chatting indoors. I don't see this place accommodating large parties unless you time it correctly. We arrived around 1pm on a Friday afternoon and there were two other small groups. The pad kra pow was delicious! So many yummy flavors in one bowl. The dumplings were really good too, although I do wish they were bigger. The flavors reminded me of Food Terminal in Atlanta. I will say the first set of utensils I got were dirty, and the first order of dumplings had a hair in it - so that put me off for a bit. The waitstaff was very kind and resolved the issue. They have a nice selections of beers, which complemented the dishes. This seems to be more of a place locals go, which was cool.

The food was good but I would say it's more of a lunch spot. We got the soft shell crab special, okonomiyaki, Som Tum with chicken, dumplings and fried rice. My favorite was the okonomiyaki, it was packed with flavor and umami, I wasn't a fan of the pork on top but everyone at the table seemed to enjoy it. Everything else was not bad, it lacked depth and I've had better.

i love the vibe of this place. the service is great and the food tastes like it's made with love. i'd rate the broccoli a 8/10, the dumplings a 8/10 and lastly the Pad Kra Pow a 7/10. super delicious and can't wait to come back

Xiao Bao Biscuit always hits. No matter how many times I go, I genuinely love going in there. The vibe inside is so good and really well done. It's cool, casual, and perfect for a laid-back dinner, a date night, or grabbing food with friends. The food never disappoints. The okonomiyaki is always a must, and the pork buns are perfection. Everything is flavorful, well balanced, and thoughtfully done.

This place looks like it is a former gas station. So much vibe it was fun just sitting there and looking around. Jordan, our server, helped us navigate the menu. My wife and I wanted some quick bites and her recommendation were perfect. The dumplings had wonderful flavor but the showstopper was the Japanese pancake. We added the pork candy and egg and it was well worth it. Every bite was a celebration in my mouth. I'm glad we went here!!!

This was a very cold afternoon and I uncharacteristically sat inside. They have no warm drinks but that's OK. I got the green fish curry again- this time with flounder. It was less colorful but super yummy!

This is an eclectic, small restaurant I guess previously a gas station. Small seating inside and out with limited parking. This place the food is very good; a spectrum of Asia style foods. Every choice is an adventure! The staff is unforgivingly friendly and helpful in choices. Who doesn't love a restaurant that says " buy beer for the kitchen" on the menu? I recommend this a must of our excellent choices in the holy city.

It was a cozy space that served delicious food. Good numbers of outside seats. Small private parking lot- 4 cars, but we were lucky enough to grab one. Got our food pretty fast.

One of our first stops in Charleston. Visited upon a friend recommendation. It was honestly so good. We showed up at 11 when they opened and it was super easy to get in and get our food. We had the Okonomiyaki with pork candy and an egg and the Som Tum w Chicken. I know they are famous for the Okonomiyaki and it was super good but I personally liked the Som Tum better. Definitely should check out if you are in Charleston. I've never had Asian comfort food and it was awesome. Also cool vibes inside. Portions are big so easy to share.

Been excited to try this place for some time now and so happy we did. The menu is small and it showed the GF options which were helpful since my hubby has Celiac. It was also specific on the bottom that they don't modify dishes which I can appreciate. We sat outdoor although they had a nice and spacious indoor seating and bar seats. Our server wasn't the most personable and friendly, but she gave us a breakdown of their dishes. I asked her for a coke with my food and never got it so I didn't even mention it because we didn't see her after our entrees dropped. Now to the food! Pork+kimchi dumplings 4/5 - dumplings and texture were great, the sauce was good but TOO much ginger and that's all you could really taste with a touch of soy. If they toned it down I would've thought it was more pleasant. Pad Kra 5/5 - it was so flavorful and all the textures were amazing, especially with the fried egg on top. Delicious! Som Tum Salad 5/5 - another delicious dish. The flavors were on point, tangy, spicy, sweet and crunchy. You could taste the fish sauce which I love! We ordered a side of rice and it went well with hot dishes. We are looking forward to trying more dishes and some cocktails next time!

When we arrived, we were seated right away and given menus. However no one came back to ask if we wanted drinks, so after about 15 minutes I went up to the bar to order drinks. Once the drinks arrived the service was much better and our order was taken right away. The server suggested 2-3 dishes per person to share. This was a great suggestion and ALL of the food was phenomenal! So much flavor! We started with the kickass papaya salad. It was simply amazing, light and spicy. The okonomiyaki is a must have! This cabbage pancake topped with the pork candy and an egg was out of this world! You have to try this!! The Sichuan chicken was the perfect amount with great flavor, you do have to pay extra for rice. Great little place bursting with flavor! We will be back!

Outside window

I wish I could give this place more stars! Don't the outside look fool you...it is in an old gas station and looks a little run down from the outside. The windows are darkened so it is hard to tell if it is open or not. There was a sandwich board outside that clued us in that it was open. Inside there is a long bar, and several tables, but generally a pretty small space. We sat at the bar and could see the kitchen through and opening behind the bar (which I really like...love to watch the cooking in action!) The bar tender was very friendly and answered all my questions about the menu and provided recommendations. We had two cocktails while we waited for our to go order (cocktails were delicious). I truly cannot convey how amazing the food was. Best. Asian. Fusion. Ever! We had three dishes. The fried mochi dumplings, the braised brisket noodles, and the papaya salad. The fried mochi was so delicious...soft pillowy dough on the outside, and rich savory curry pork on the inside. The mochi came with this incredibly savory, and spicy green sauce. I wish I knew what it was called so I can order the sauce again, it was so good. I may have to call them to ask what the sauce is called. The braised brisket noodles had so much flavor...so many herbs, the beef melted in your mouth it was so tender, and the noodles were perfectly soft yet a little tiny bit chewy in a perfect way. The papaya salad was named "kickass papaya salad" on the menu, and it is true to its name...spicy, crunchy, tangy, sweet, salty, savory deliciousness! I would have eaten here more times while in Charleston...but they were closed on Fourth of July (good for them!), and since it was my first time in Charleston I did want to try a few other places. But, seriously...can't stop thinking about how good this meal was!

While exploring Charleston for the week, we were in dire need of some Asian flavors so we made our way over to Xiao Bao Biscuit. I really loved the gas station repurposed into a restaurant vibe and the interior + exterior décor. It was cute and charming all while the restaurant is nestled within a residential neighborhood. Ordered the jiao zi, bao buns, papaya salad, and pad kra pow. The papaya salad was my favorite, it was extremely spicy but so flavorful and refreshing. The bao buns were okay, mostly just bao and not much filling. The pad kra pow was alright, it got pretty salty after a couple bites. Not sure if it's cause we're coming from a high standard of Asian food but the food was overall, mediocre. The service on the other hand was great. Our server (can't remember his name unfortunately) was super friendly, helpful, and made the dining experience enjoyable.

It sets the tone immediately, and the festive energy carries straight through the meal. We kicked things off with Bloody Marys and a Morning Fog -- simple, classic, and done right. For starters, we shared the Hula Hoisin Wings. They were definitely on the heavier side with the hoisin, but still absolutely delicious. The Mistletoe Mango Tuna Poke Tacos were a standout. They come as a small plate with three appetizer-sized tacos, and every bite was bright, fresh, and beautifully balanced. The Buddy the Elf Burger offers a choice of a single or double patty; ours was cooked perfectly. The smoky bacon really brought everything together and gave it that extra "wow" factor. We rounded things out with the O Come, All Ye Fried Rice with Hanger Steak, which was another winner -- perfectly cooked, flavorful, and incredibly satisfying. As if the meal wasn't great enough on its own, we happened to be there while Emily Curtis was performing. She's truly incredible and added such a fun, memorable vibe to the day. I'd be remiss not to mention Kevin our server. Go see him. He was great. The whole team works great together. Don't let the bar-like atmosphere fool you -- Prohibition is far from your typical bar food or bar scene. There's a great space in the back, and the elevated menu makes it absolutely worth the visit. I have never had a bad drink here. I got the Batata Clarified Milk Punch (description in picture) which was fantastic. The toasted marshmallow garnish was a great touch for the season we were in. My mom got the Bourbon and Clyde and she said it was incredible. Description also in picture. The orange foam and pistachio crumble was a great addition. Another great drink for autumn. My second drink was the Smokin Indo which was probably my favorite. They performed the smoked glass technique with applewood which was not only cool to watch but added a unique flavor to the drink. We always make a point to get the assorted cheeses when we are here because they make a great charcuterie board. They switch up the cheeses just like they change their cocktail menu. Love to sit at the bar because it is truly an art to watch the bartenders make these drinks and really adds to the experience. Everyone who works here is super kind and knowledgeable on their craft. However, if you are able to be there when the two Doar brothers are working it makes it truly special. They give postcards with their check and there's a bowl of matchbooks sitting on the bar. We asked when we ordered about the flavor profile and supposedly it wasn't sweet, but all 3 of us agreed it was way oversweet. My black manhattan was phenomenal and my husband had a mocktail moscow mule that was awesome. The level of knowledge and creativity behind the bar was incredible. Every drink he made was stunning and tasted even better than it looked. I was honestly so impressed that I couldn't even remember all the ingredients he mentioned because I was too busy being amazed at how good everything was. It was one of those moments where you realize there are real levels to this craft. The atmosphere, the personal attention, and the quality of the cocktails made this place feel truly top tier. Huge shoutout to the bartender, easily a 15 out of 10.
