    Potato Roll
    Alexa S.

I don't even know if I have the words to describe how incredibly life-changing this meal was, but I'm going to try my best. When searching for sushi restaurants on our trip to Charleston , my friend and I had never heard of a potato roll before. We were sold right away! Of course we imagined it would be good, but we did not think it would leave us speechless and on the verge of tears. GET THE POTATO ROLL!! The eel of Fortune and salmon lemon roll were equally as phenomenal and fresh. We wanted to try every roll on the menu! They had awesome spicy mayo which is critical in my judgment for a sushi restaurant. The service rocked, and the decor was absolutely adorable. Try this place if you want to be blown away!

I took my teen son here for his first time, right before going to his homecoming dance down the street. He had an amazing time and as a foodie he enjoyed everything that he had. To start off, he picked out the Tiger and the Coconut from the zero proof drink menu. He said it was so good, he was struggling to drink it slowly and was forcing himself to take small sips. He added that the lemon garnish on top really added the perfect balance to the drink. To eat, we had the crispy rice, spring rolls, angry salmon, and the o-ku rock shrimp. All were very good and plentiful between the two of us. Everything came out very timely and service was excellent. Thank you!

I've been to this restaurant downtown on a few occasions. On this occasion, specifically, I was celebrating my birthday, and the sushi chef created a unique experience for me and my guest. All of the sushi was made right in front of us. The waiter made sure drinks stayed full and plates didn't sit empty. Chill vibes and moody aesthetic.

Everything I've tried at this restaurant is absolutely delicious. Sat at the bar, and the surface is great. The bartender was really nice and informative. Went during happy hour, so we got a few different roles, and they're happy hour cocktails. I love the vibe of the restaurant, the lighting is moody and a great place for a date night. I can't wait to come back!

I have nothing but good things to say about the O-Ku Charleston location! We started off with Espresso Martinis, Truffle Edamame, Annie's Dumplings-just incredible. The Kaarage Chicken and Snow crab roll were delicious as well. Would recommend to anyone looking to get their Japanese-restaurant fix in Charleston.

This was a great experience from start to finish. Alexis made our first visit even more memorable. The food was outstanding. Appetizers, sushi and dessert, one item was better than the next. This is a must do!

We wanted a nice dinner for the first night in town and O-Ku delivered an excellent meal in a beautiful space! I loved the giant mirrors, art on the walls, table scape, and the music was the right volume. Sam, our server, went above and beyond to make sure we were taken care of and we really appreciated the recommendations he offered for the rest of our visit. Our table enjoyed 3 small plates to start: dumplings, Tokyo wings, and O-Ku rock shrimp. The value for food was satisfactory. The dumplings especially hit the spot. I absolutely loved the Kaarage Chicken and sushi rice. I'm stoked to have leftovers, too. The three makimono: Potato, Baby Dynamite & Tuna Tataki, and fried rice were all pretty good choices too. We didn't experience any lag with getting our cocktails like some other reviewer mentioned. This dessert menu was pretty new and if it wasn't for all the items sounding so creative I wouldn't have felt it necessary to spend $13 on one given that I was already full :P Buuuut we eye-hustled the two that the next table over got. The matcha mousse looked really cool! I couldn't resist trying the chocolate espresso bar with its black sesame sponge cake. The flavor was perfectly paired with my cute single serving French press coffee. The dessert was also way bigger than I expected so the price was immediately justifiable. I'd definitely recommend this spot to other folks!

Popular spot in the center of the restaurant area. Reasonably priced and shears has a crowd. Food is good though the menu is z little limited if you're not having sushi. Inside is clean and our waiter was very helpful,

We've been enjoying O-Ku for a decade, mostly for drinks. This time, however, we patiently waited for a seat at the bar to open up, grabbed two stools, and had a very nice experience. Our bartender was the floor manager; we were thrilled. She was polite, proactive (without being pushy), and without error. I even ordered a "curve ball" negroni because I thought it would pair well. Delicious. We tried the Kaarage (sesame) Chicken, dumplings, wings, and tuna roll. All dishes came out lightning fast! After we noticed that ticket times were less than 5 minutes (even on a Saturday), we spread out our food orders/waves and enjoyed our drinks. Any sushi place that can ALSO knock out some tasty hot dishes (Kaarage) is always a plus and will help appeal to a/your group when trying to settle on a place. O-Ku checks a LOT of boxes. Elegant, upscale, established, friendly, high food quality, a "happenin'" bar, and a classy atmosphere.

Not to mention the huge snarky attitudes and negative undertones received from the hostess's staff. Literally, I witnessed the young black female this past Saturday evening, Kamaya, I believe is her name display a fake disposition, associated with a fake smile and then spoke negatively of patrons behind their backs, under her breath. I get it, they can't control diners who linger around after being serve and or can't control or predict, when they decide to leave so others are able to be seated and served in a timely fashion. But, I would suggest, to always remain very transparent and do not force bogus rules of rushing a party to arrive early and then convey a message that states your table will be held for 10 minutes and then released/ cancelled. When a party, such as ourselves, arrive before time and then are told that your party will not be seated until all parties are INSIDE the building, even though they are trying to find a park in this small parking lot. Finally, all parties of your group are present and accounted for, standing in your face still within the time frame mentioned. Then to be told, you now have a few tables ahead of you and the wait is approximately 20 minutes. Really? But in actuality you and your guests now wait 40 to 45 minutes after your scheduled reservation. All the while witnessing them seat random small parties that walk in after your large group with an actual reservation. I know this because I listened as I stood idly by the hostess desk. One or the management of this establishment need to focus on revamping this failed system and have some of your hostess to work on their attitudes. Last I checked, it is patrons such as myself that keeps them employed and your business successful and thriving. Also, a word to all other patrons, if you desire a table greater than a party of 12, prepare to pay a deposit of $10 pp but you still will probably have to wait for your reserved tables. The only thing that made me come back to this place was a special request from my daughter for her birthday and our amazing Chef Marcelino, and Gee, our server was pretty cool as well. Needless to say, with all of the hoops, unnecessary rules and lack of communication, unwarranted attitudes, rehearsed apologies and lack of organizational skills, it will be a while before we return to this establishment, if at all! There are too many restaurants here in the Low Country who strive for professionalism and actually value their patrons without the blatant disrespect from their hostess desk. I would give, 5 stars for Marcelino and Gee but 1 star for the hostess desk! Do better!

I appreciated how they filled their spicy tuna rolls with chunky pieces of fish instead of the usual ground tuna used in other sushi restaurants. Their offerings and methods of preparation, paired with their higher price point, suggests they are a higher end establishment. However, the atmosphere was undoubtedly on the casual side, and their service, although friendly and knowledgeable, exuded a lack of experience and the same attention to detail that they put into their food. This was especially apparent after coming from eating at other restaurants in a similar price bracket, where you can sense the waitstaff had a lot of pride and passion for their craft, and it didn't feel like it was just a job for them. In contrast, our experience at Shiki felt far more transactional, and lacked that "customer obsession" and genuine warmth. That said, it's difficult to judge a restaurant's culture just from a single night, and maybe other customers had a different experience from us. Ultimately, if good sushi is your priority and you are willing to splurge a bit, Shiki meets and even exceeds that bar.

They exist, but some of the best are so unassuming you can walk right past them. Shiki is exactly that kind of place--a small, warm, inviting restaurant tucked into a strip mall that feels like a neighborhood secret. Loc, our waiter, greeted us as soon as we sat down with water, a friendly welcome, and a helpful walk-through of the menu. We started with wine and sake--always a promising beginning. The first course was seaweed salad with baby octopus, and I could have happily sipped that dressing like a cocktail. Light, bright, perfectly balanced, with tender octopus that added just the right bite. From there we decided to sample our way through the menu and ordered a lineup of rolls: Spicy Yellowtail, Spicy Shiromi, Rainbow, Spider, Lemon Salmon, and Eel. Each one seemed better than the last. The Spicy Shiromi was the clear standout--absolutely spectacular. What really sets Shiki apart is that every roll has its own distinct flavor instead of the one-note sameness you find at so many sushi spots. You can tell real care goes into the preparation. If you're searching for fresh, thoughtful, genuinely delicious sushi, don't overlook this little gem. Shiki is the real deal.

It didn't feel like a normal sushi bar where I felt like I was able to see the chef prepare the food I'm not sure if there was some kind of height disproportion or if the glass with food was blocking the way. The staff was friendly but there did seem to be some kind of miscommunication between the server and the chef when they were doing hand offs on top of the bar. It might be better to do food handoffs at the open corner to the side so the waitress didnt have to reach high and over customers although maybe it is different when it is busy since I was the only one at the bar. The food itself was delicious although I must admit I can't tell the difference between normal sushi. I would rate this as normal sushi. To put things in perspective bad sushi would have dried out rice or fish that tastes a bit off in a bad way. Amazing sushi would be something that just tastes so different but in a good way. Could be a cute casual date spot or even a friend group meet up spot. Keep in mind the space is limited but it shares the menu and space with Taste of Thai next door. The first thing of note are the prices which are very reasonable. In fact the nigiri was so low I had to confirm it was for 2 pieces and not just one The restaurant is smallish but comfortable. They also share a hallway with their sister restaurants a taste of Thai, and as i understand it, you can order from both restaurants, regardless of which one you are eating at Regarding the Sushi itself there was some good, but there was also some average, and some very bad. I will go from worst to best. We started buy getting two orders of Tobiko. They had an option of Red, Green and Black. We have never had Black Tobiko (infused with squid ink), so we ordered Green and Black. The waitress got it wrong and gave us Red instead of Block . We should have sent it back, but we do like the red so we kept it. BIG MISTAKE. Normally a red Tobiko has a slight smokey flavor, but this was so over the top I wasn't sure if it was unique flavor to this restaurant or bad fish eggs. The wife thought so little of it she spit it out. The Green wasn't bad, but we were already on a downhill slide Next was two Eel handrolls which we normally love. Mine was OK, but The wife's Eel looked, and she said tasted raw and so this was another dish she could not eat. Next on the not so great list was the Ginger. Something else we normally love, but this Ginger was an odd darker shade pink to Red and had an funny taste to it. The Rainbow Roll was not bad, but I personally never had it with Shrimp. I am assuming they use Shrimp to lower the cost, but my preference isn't to have Shrimp as one of my fishes on a Rainbow roll. The spider roll we order was decent, but could have used some Eel Sauce on it. We tried something new for us which was the Salmon Tempura Roll. This consisted of Salmon tempura, crab, cucumber, avocado, masago, teriyaki. Neither of us have had Salmon tempura so it was not only unique but very good. We both loved the light crunch of the tempura fired Salmon. It has been many years since we ordered salmon skin, so we got 2 hand rolls. This was the star of the night. The roll was loaded with wonderful crispy salmon skin with Masago, scallion, spicy mayo. The wife usually does not like spicy mayo, but in this case, it paired really nice with the crunch of the skin. So yea some good, some medium, and some really bad.

We started with the tempura vegetables that had a super light fry on them and a good variety of veggies. Then we both had bento boxes which included veggies, rice, dumplings, sushi and a protein. On one we had teriyaki chicken and the other was scallops plus an add on of chicken katsu. I thought the scallops were going to be normal sea scallops, but they were the tiny bay scallops. Still tasty, but worth knowing before ordering. I'm glad I doubled down on protein with the chicken katsu which came on it's own plate with dipping sauce.
