Living on James Island, we were super stoked about this new dining option. We had never been to the previous locale, but the reviews and pictures of the dishes peaked our curiosity.
Feeling ambitious, we first attempted to come in on opening night. It was bustling, understandably, and there was no seating available. We stood by the bar & had a beer, drooling over the dishes coming out of the kitchen. At no point did anyone working ask us if we had a reservation, if we wanted to add our name to the list or perhaps order anything to go. We left, mildly disappointed, but shrugged it off-opening night & all.
A week later, we tried again. Once again we stood by the bar area, as directed by the sign by the entry. This time we didn't even order a beer. After a few minutes, with staff and owners buzzing around us, we left without anyone greeting us. We decided to give it a few more weeks to try again. Third times a charm, right?
It was mid week, around 8pm & the parking lot had spaces. Things were looking up! Upon entry, the dining area was half full & all seats at the bar were filled. We were seated in a two top table closest to the entry, in front of the bathrooms, and in the direct path of the kitchen thoroughfare.
After we were seated, we waited 5 minutes before our server came to our table with water & menus. There was no welcoming, no "do you have any questions?" We ordered our food & aside from plates being cleared, our server was MIA. The atmosphere is awkward. We felt like we were inconveniencing the staff by being there & the food was nothing spectacular.
The crescent dumplings had a nice flavor & sauce but they were really firm & undercooked. Unsurprising, as they were luke warm. The texture of the dumplings reminded me of undercooked ravioli.
The wings were good but the heat of the spice overpowered the flavor.
The Dan Dan Noodles ($14), were served in a cereal sized bowl. The minced pork & bok choy were cold, not room temp cold, from the fridge cold. A strange mix, as the noodles were steaming hot. Taking in a bite was a mangle of hot & cold sensations. The flavor was mediocre. Slightly creamy, slightly peanut forward, slightly stinky of vinegar. The pictures we had seen of this dish led us to believe it would be Amazing.
On a positive note, the eggplant was delicious, super tender, subtle ginger flavor, mild hot sauce. Almost melts in your mouth.
That being said, we were never asked how our food was, we were asked once if we wanted a second beer (my boyfriend said "yes" but with the clearing of our plates, this was forgotten & at that point not worth staying for) that's the extent of customer "service" we received. There was no "thank you" or inquiry from management (who was around our table the entire time) about our dining experience. We paid our bill & left the nearly empty restaurant, without a word from a single staff member.
We tried three times, had the food once & will not be back again anytime soon. read more
