Having owned a bubble tea cafe, My wife and I are admittedly a bit snobby with our expectations of local bubble tea shops. Yesterday we decided to try Kung Fu Tea. Realizing that it was a national chain, and with a line nearly out the door, our hopes were for a fantastic product. The decor and the people were fantastic, however, their black milk tea and their green milk tea were nearly undrinkable. It seemed like the drinks were made from a non-dairy product mixed with either a green tea or black tea powder and perhaps real tea on top of that. I got half the sweetness and still couldnt believe how sweet it was. Our drinks were super foamy and slightly gritty. A milk tea should be smooth and the tea should shine through with a slight sweetness. This tasted more like melted ice cream with a very overly floral tea flavor and some sort of gritty powder that coated your tongue. Boba was good. Price was good. The store was clean and the people were fantastic. However, the end product left us wanting and we will likely not be back. read more

All Bubble Tea places are good. Kung Fu is a chain bubble tea place. If you are going to have a chain, It is best that it should serve a kind of food that is failure proof. Bubble Tea is failure proof. * * * Distinctive Characteristics of Kung Fu Tea Compared to Other Bubble Tea Places 1) Drinks only. No food. And that means no Taiwanese food. Waah. 2) They have some exotic items on the menu that are fun to play with. 2a) They do a special lactaid-based Wow Milk that they take great pride in. 2b) If you don't want their custom Wow milk, they have other interesting milks, including ginger milk and matcha milk. I went with the matcha milk myself. Ginger and matcha milk are not unheard-of in bubble tea places. But they are not that common either. Matcha milk tastes overwhelmingly like matcha tea because it IS matcha tea. Vast amounts of matcha tea powder are stirred into your milk. So the menu says "milk" but you are also getting "tea". Not a problem. Caffeine is my friend. The matcha tea powder has a very very strong matcha tea taste. This is an acquired taste. I acquired it in about ninety seconds. Now I love the stuff. I'll have another two or three or six of those, thank you very much. 2c) For a price, they will put fig jelly in your bubble tea for the bubbles. Fig Jelly cubes are almost as big as Jello Cubes in a Southern salad. They have a mild but recognizable fig taste. (Fig Newtons are figgier.) But thumbs up anyway. They beat tapioca balls left and right and up and down - And I LIKE tapioca balls. 3. Kung Fu wants to be a hang-out like Starbucks where you spend hours and hours there, drinking your bubble tea and doing your stuff. They conspicuously post the Wi-Fi sign in information. They have Jenga blocks on some of the tables. No one was taking them up on the "Let's Turn Kung Fu into a Coffee House" offer. I work in a lot of coffee houses - They do offer Espresso drinks - and the workspace is not awful. But the place does not feel nerdy like a coffee house. It feels more like an ice cream parlor. You might not want to go to Kung Fu to write your master's thesis. But if you are on a date, or You just want to treat yourself, I DO recommend you go to Kung Fu for Asian drinks. Their versions of Asian drinks are fine - And there are some fine original twists on their menu. read more

This isn't the first Kung Fu Tea I've visited - there was a location in Boston's Chinatown that I frequented before Teado moved in and usurped their position as the defacto bubble tea champ in town. KFT (as it is often endearingly abbreviated) is unique in Austin for being one of the few locations that actively advertises options for customizing sugar and ice content. Don't like your fruit tea to taste like a liquid Starburst? Just ask for less sugar. Don't want to have a ton of ice on a January day? Ask for no ice. Of course, to assess the qualtiy of the bubble tea, I ordered my usual: mango green tea with a double serving of tapioca. Authentic flavour - 3/5 The mango was definitely not fresh fruit, and the green tea definitely felt watered down. Actually, my entire drink felt watered down I haven't had this experience in the Boston location, so I'm wondering if it's just a matter of the new Austin location figuring out proportions as they go? Perhaps I'll come back again a few months down the line and revise my review. For now, be warned that your teas will taste watered down :( Boba flavour & consistency - 4/5 The consistency was perfect here. Chewy bubbles without being goopy. I'm not sure what KFT covers their boba with, but it's not sugar like most other places. My guess is a natural sweetener like honey or agave, because the bubbles do not get sticky sweet when you're down to the bottom of the cup. This is a hit or miss for some people - I personally like the sticky sweetness, but I know a lot of people hate it. In this case, it makes the bubbles feel smooth and taste slightly sweet without being overbearing. Not bad. Menu variety - 4/5 I've actually heard people complain that KFT's menu is "confusing" at first, simply because there are so many options! Yes, it's true - they have a great variety, with some flavours that typical Americans may not have heard of. For example, try their longan tea (it tastes kind of like a tangy lychee?), or their winter melon tea. I would say the fruit tea lovers lose out a little (hence 1 star off), because their fruit teas are a little unorthodox (grapefruit green tea? pineapple tea? peach oolong?) but they have a good selection of classically Asian flavours like matcha, red bean, and almond. And as I mentioned previously, you can customize how much sugar and ice you want in your tea. The sugar is measured in percentages (25%, 50%, etc.) and the ice is either "ice", "less ice", or "no ice". Cafe decor and ambiance - 3/5 Not much to say here, since I think KFT actually standardizes their decor as part of the brand image. It's a "modern" feel for sure, with shiny marble counters, polished wood, sleek tables, and metal yellow barstools. Not bad, just not my taste - I prefer bubble tea cafes to feel more homey, keeping in line with the "tea" feel (e.g. lots of wood, cushiony chairs, etc.) But this is just my personal taste. This location has lots of big tables that can easily seat 5-6, along with a bar area in case you're a loner like me ;) There's unfortunately not a lot of seating for couples (e.g. small 2-person tables), though. At Kung Fu Tea, the drinks are highly customizable in terms of level of sweetness, ice and types of toppings. It is like getting your drink built since the customer preference is asked with every drink order, making it stand out in comparison to other tea houses. At other boba tea stores, I used to do away with the standard drinks inspite of it being overtly sweet. Well, now I'm spoilt with choice! I ordered a Taro milk bubble tea and a Chai milk boba, both made as per the order. The order was surprisingly ready within 2minutes. There is a large variety in terms of the kind of drink, flavors and toppings. The popping bubbles topping is novel and tasty, although I would execute caution while selecting the flavor of the popping bubble in order to ensure that it goes well with the flavor of the drink. Kung Fu Tea is my favorite bubble tea chain next to Sharetea. Both are dear to me, but Kung Fu Tea even more so for the wintermelon milk teas they sell. This location is within the Crossroads shopping center, and parking is not too hard to find. My go-to drink is always the wintermelon milk green tea. The milk foam created from their shaker machines is perfect, and the wintermelon milk green tea's taste is hard to describe. Their pearls have a nice texture, but they are too sweet. Kung Fu Tea is transparent with their producst because they offer their nutritional information online, and they even go an extra mile to show you the ingredients list of all the syrups they use in their drinks. Kung Fu Tea is a great study spot during the weekdays because it's fairly empty even on a Friday night. The wifi is fast, and the store is pretty quiet. One of the shift leads is especially friendly and happy to take register, unlike her two coworkers I usually see that never seem to want to help customers. read more

Further from the downtown UT location, this location is not too far from the Domain area. It's not overcrowded like the campus location and parking is plenty although can be difficult to find sometimes. My boyfriend and I are obsessed with their drinks, you can customize your drink orders with less or more sugar, ice, toppings, you name it! Their drinks run more on the sweet side, FYI! I really like the other Kung Fu establishments but wasn't a huge fan of this one. We ordered the Oolong Bubble Milk tea and found that they only served mini tapioca balls at the time, not the regular sized ones. We asked if they ran out of the regular sized tapioca balls and they replied back saying "No. Sometimes we serve mini and sometimes we serve regular". We decided to give it a shot and paid the 50 cent add-on but ended up not liking it because it had a different taste and texture. I recommend that they allow customers to choose what kind of tapioca they want... because America. I feel like it's the basis behind a tapioca drink shop. It's like going to a pizza restaurant and all you can get is ham instead of pepperoni. Lastly, someone in our group noticed that their drink wasn't made right because it wasn't as sweet. They gave her a hard time about asking to remake the drink but afterwards apologized and corrected it. Overall the Oolong tea I ordered tasted like how it was suppose to but it was odd that my option for boba was limited because of what they wanted to serve that day. I did a blind taste test with friends comparing milk tea, at 50% sweetness level, from Kung Fu and several surrounding milk tea shops in Austin. We had a friend pour each of us samples into Dixie cups and number them. We wrote out our favorites to least favorites. I've had Kung Fu before and was always skeptical that it could beat out Sharetea. Turns out Kung Fu made it to my top favorite for regular milk tea! I love Kung Fu Tea! If I lived north I would be here ALL THE TIME! Since I don't live nearby when I'm in the area this is a must stop. Today I tried the Mango slushee with bubbles and popping grape bubbles.... it was soooo gooood! I love tapioca. The popping bubbles are so fun too and a nice little surprise as you sip your drink. I love that you can choose your sweetness level and everything is completely customizable. I always get the least amount of sweetness because I never need extra sugar. Came here on a Friday afternoon just after opening and ordered a mango green tea with jelly! I stayed for a few hours to work on my laptop; Fast Wifi and nice staff. They have lots of big jenga blocks available on the tables, and a pretty good number of outlets available. They had a steady number of people in and out with most people grabbing their drinks to go. My tea was pretty good, not overly sweet (at 50%, I did ask them for their recommendation) and didn't taste too watered down even with my snail-paced drinking. I'm from San Francisco and pretty spoiled with boba spots. We do have Kung Fu tea here also which was also good. I'd want to try Ding next time, but this place was solid! read more

While stuck in the house during the quarantine, I love being able to still indulge my favorite sweets with my family! I ordered through 6 drinks thru Uber Eats and everything was prepared PERFECTLY by Kung Fu. Everything tasted like how I would imagine being there physically at the store. Fresh, sweet, and most of all SATISFYING! Not having to leave the house but still being able to enjoy boba milk teas is such a plus! Side note for Kung Fu: I would like to point out that I wish Kung Fu would wipe the cups down a little better. They were all sticky but really isn't too much of a problem. This was my second visit to Kung Fu Tea. I love that they have a large menu, with many different options, add-ons, and a variety of pearls and jellies. As I was wanting to try something new, instead of my usual almond milk tea, I had a convo with the nice young lady behind counter. She asked a few questions to narrow down what I might like, and she suggested the passion fruit green tea. I ordered and added mango pearls. They offer the tapioca pearls, as well as the exploding kind that are filled with juices. While waiting for my drink I was serenaded with the sweet sounds of Gucci Mane. I appreciate a place that plays rap music. GUWOP! My drink was perfect. Love this KFT location! I came for the first time for a Yelp event organized by our Yelp community manager Luci for national tapioca day. What I first noticed about this location was that it's smaller than the one in WC but cleaner! The staff were also very friendly and the girl at the cashier was so helpful and offered samples of toppings and recommendations for drinks. The owner was also at the event and likewise very friendly and hospitable! As for drinks, I got the matcha red bean slush with boba (my fav!) and my sister got the mango snow slush (too sweet for me but she loves it). My other go-to drinks are oolong milk tea and honey grapefruit tea! Can't go wrong w any of the drinks here. Only thing I would recommend is to offer gift cards! Kung Fu Tea is now one of my favorite bubble tea places in Austin. The staff is always warm and friendly with superb service to match. It's an inviting space with large jenga to play with. My favorite boba drinks are taro, red bean, and mung bean in either wow milk strike or slush form, but you can also get many other flavors in classic, tea, punch, yogurt, and espresso. The consistency of the drinks and the texture of the all natural boba pearls are sublime. They even let you customize the additional sugar level from 0% to 100%! What's a trip to another state without trying their boba fare? This isn't the first kung fu tea I've seen in the US but I havnt tried their tea before. I ordered the passionfruit green tea with boba, 30% sweet. It was ok. The tea was more on the bitter side and the passion fruit flavoring wasn't that bright (maybe caused by the 30% sweet option?). Their boba was warm - always a plus - but they were so soft and not that chewy. I prefer a more Q boba. My fiance ordered their taro smoothie with boba and loved it. It had a very natural tasting taro flavor, not sure if it had real taro but it could've fooled me. It was pretty icy. At 0% sweet, it was still sweet enough. Ah KFT. This place is the only place in Austin nowadays that gets my money for boba and its easy to see why. Yes, prices are a bit higher than other places, but the quality is very noticeable. The menu can be overwhelming for first timers and the girl behind the counter wasn't too helpful when my friend was asking questions. They also didn't have aloe jelly so BOOO on that. Prices are a bit expensive, but they do have a nice variety of toppings. Kinda strange that I wasn't allowed to alter the sugar level on most of my drinks! And the milk tea is powder and there wasn't an option to use fresh milk... so that was lame -____- Anyway I ordered the almond milk tea with boba pearls and the mango oolong tea. The almond milk was very good and the boba was soft and chewy. Definitely would get again. The mango oolong on the other hand... I didn't really like the flavor very much. Maybe I was here on a really great day or something, but this brand new KFT was kicking ass & taking names. The Kung Fu Tea on 24th street seems bigger, brighter, and a popular flocking place for Houston Asians at UT. But this Kung Fu on Burnet & 183 has better boba & lots of parking - now we're talking Austin Asian thing. Same franchise, same Wonka gizmos, and it occurs to me I may have wandered in here during soft opening: The staff making my stuff was being meticulously supervised, glancing at manuals, and pretty much concocting a perfect Boba milk tea. I do half sugar & less ice, and they nailed it. And I shan't quibble over KFT's slight priciness or why they haven't invaded Portland yet, but I am curious how they'll handle the typical crowds during an Austin weekend. We had so much fun at the Yelp Elite event! Thank you Luci, Yelp and Kung Fu Tea for making it possible! My daughter and I got there right on the dot at 6:30 and was happy there wasn't a huge line. Was extra happy to meet Luci, grabbed some Yelp glasses, got a free pass for our next visit and ordered our drinks. My all time favorite is still Wintermelon (I try this everywhere to test which is the best) but I did venture and try their milk version. It's creamier but I liked it. I think when I come back (thank you for the extra drink pass) I will get the regular wintermelon tea because it's more refreshing and less heavy. Loved it still! My daughter got her fruit teas. She likes those. Passion fruit green tea. I tasted it and it was ok just because I prefer non fruit teas. But she loved it. We love grass jelly or herbal jellies and was happy they had that. Loved it. Had a great time with fellow elites. Dear elite friends gave us their 2nd drinks so we took home their taro slushies with boba to-go for my younger kids. They enjoyed it so much lol I did try the mango snow with nata jelly and that was so yum. Sweet and cold. Pricy if it wasn't free but it's big. Their teas are really good here which is a good thing since their name has tea right in it . Unlike their name though the tea taste doesn't kick you in the mouth like one of Bruce lees famous roundhouse kicks. In our opinion that's a good thing cause you get to enjoy the drink without all that extra bitter that sometimes comes with tea while getting to enjoy the subtle earthy tones that do come with it. For some tea lovers though that might be a turn off so bewareeee. On the day of this review we had the winter melon green tea and the longan jujube tea. Previously we've also had their seasonal pumpkin milk tea. The winter melon we had with the boba which is a great consistency (not over cooked and right chewiness) and not overly sweet. The tea itself wasn't too sweet either and enough tea flavor came through! The longan and pumpkin we had herbal Jelly. The jelly is a great consistency and again right sweetness. The pumpkin was good sweetness wise and tea tasting with not much emphasis on milk which is what we loved some who love creamy though may hate that. The longan was a bit sweet but paired with herbal jelly it was good actually since that cuts the sweetness. The staff is super nice and we've even had a few chats with the co owner and manager Howard who's nice in a nerdy way (that's a compliment cause nerds are awesome!). Price is generally around $3 for medium with $1 to upgrade to large and .50 cents per topping. Use the yelp check in for a free one! Prices may vary by drinks but it's close to this format Overall we will definitely be coming back and really glad that we visited since we just moved to Austin from Cali ourselves!
