To be honest, I was quite disappointed with this chik nengmyun... there was no ice slush, missing beef slices and noodles were not fresh. I could tell they were sitting out for a bit and I wondered if we got someone else's old order (that would explain the lack of ice slush). I frequent this restaurant throughout the year, esp during the summer months so I know what the nengmyun SHOULD look and taste like. The pork BBQ, however, did not disappoint. Food was good but employee was very rude. Not only did she get the order wrong, leaving one person to just watch everyone else eat. But she didn't even apologize and just came back to ask in a annoyed tone that we said the wrong menu name when I specifically said it twice while pointing to the menu. She, then proceeded to ignore our table. Especially when we asked for the check three times. She looked at us and then turned around without even answering. She finally gave the check at the end but our table of 6 all saw how she treated us. As Korean locals, we really love how they put out so much banchan (side dishes) and they all taste homemade, not like what you usually get at restaurants. What comes to mind when, "good hot weather food" is mentioned? Gazpacho? A refreshing salad? For me, I think of naengmyun, a Korean soup of chewy arrowroot noodles in a cold, savory beef broth, lightly spiked with vinegar and punched up with the addition of mustard. And I can think of no better restaurant for naengmyun than Geum Sung. At Geum Sung, the subtle yet beefy broth is laden with crunchy radishes, shreds of beef, slivers of pear and a hard boiled egg. A bowl full of noodles and the accompanying banchan makes for a refreshing and satisfying meal. However, the beef broth was so good, that I self inflicted much pain (and pleasure) as I greedily guzzled down as much broth as I could, much to the objection of my overladen stomach. Aside from the amazing naengmyun, the pajeon, which was roughly the circumference of a VW bus tire, arrived crispy, hot and delicious. Servings of dotorimuk, house made savory acorn jelly, were slurped with much enthusiasm. And finally, the restaurant gladly delivered tea pot upon tea pot of yook soo - essentially hot beef broth, which is strangely delicious and compelling, even on a hot day. There is an age old saying that we Koreans have a separate stomachs for meat and noodles. Kum Sung is my go-to spot for 'bi bim neng myun' which is noodles mixed with sweet and spicy sauce. 'bi bim' translates to 'mixed.' 'Chik Neng Myun' literally translates to 'Buckwheat Cold Noodles'. There are many ingredients that make our traditional national noodle dish, the carefully choreographed culinary masterpiece that it is. The sauce is sweet and spicy and the noodles are nice and chewy. A slice or two of savory braised beef marries well with the overall spiciness. The thinly sliced pickled daikon and cucumbers adds a palate cleansing crispness. A slice of an Asian pear adds another dimension of simultaneously sweet and refreshing flavors. The half of a hard-boiled egg is my favorite way to end the last couple slurps of noodles. I haven't tried anything else but 'if it ain't broke, why fix it?' The sweet, savory, spicy, and crisp flavors all happily dance on your tongue together, while every satiating swallow soothes your stomach's woes. I'm not sure why there is so many good reviews for their Naengmyun. It was okay but I've definitely had better. The waitress recommended the Naengmyun with kalbi combo. When the kalbi came it was a beef patty but the waitress insisted it was the kalbi in mashed form. It definitely didn't taste like kalbi. Waste of $18. Gem in Murray Hill. Halabuhji Bulgogi (Grandpa Bulgogi) and a Sekomi Nengmyun and you're set. I can't get enough. Halabuhji Bulgogi - place the kimchi and gogi on top of your nengmyun, and you'll get one unforgettable, mouth-watering bite. You can't forget about the broth. After simmering in all those vegetables and meat, that broth becomes so silky and flavorful. I tried mixing the soup with a side of rice for the first time and I don't know why I didn't do this sooner! I went out of my way to try the chik bibim naengmyun here on a ridiculously hot afternoon during the weekday (last month). Hearing the rave reviews, I expected nothing short of blissful naengmyun heaven. The first few bites were amaaazing: the hot sauce was damn good, the cucumber slices were nice and crunchy, the thin pickled radishes were ever so slightly sour, and the noodles themselves---the star of the show. Superbly chewy, long and cooked just right, you really need to count the number of times you chew before swallowing because you could seriously just inhale it (probably bad for your digestion). The trouble was with the soup base. It was much too vinegary or salty, or a bit of both? My taste buds were very confused, but I knew it was too much of something that it overpowered everything and prevented me from comfortably polishing off my meal. Other slight problems were the boiled beef slices (like a measly 4 pieces?) and the banchan, which I could do without (wanted kimchee soo bad! but they don't serve that with naengmyun). I would recommend asking for kimchee as a side, if you can. And I might just try the regular chik naengmyun instead of the bibim to see if there's a difference in taste. read more

The banchan came out and it was either really delicious or I was unbelieveably hungry. The 'chik mool' naeng myun was delicious and very refreshing. I also ordered the pork belly cooked in garlic with daeng jang jigae. We had to complain about the soup bc there was barely any. It's like they gave us someone else's half eaten bowl. The soup was very salty, but at least the pork belly was delicious. One person received their food extremely late, and when it came out, something tasted rotten. And on top of that, they wouldn't let us order another dish because it would take too long and we were taking too many tables. They let him take a smaller dish home for free. Quite unexcuseable if you ask me. I give it 3 stars because the food that I got was relatively good. The spotty service and some questionable dishes really brought it down. read more

Mixed feelings about this place. Used to love it, but now it feels like food and service you get is based on luck. Some days you win, some days you lose. Food: I always come here when I'm craving cold noodles and get the seakomi mul naeng myeon. My favorite way to eat it is to mix hot and cold by taking a bite of the potato pancake (one per person) each time. If you wan to go all out, I suggest the grandpa kimchi bulgogi (?) on the special menu which we get when we're feeling super hungry. Service: The ladies are generally very nice, but it's hard to get their attention when they're busy... especially in the summer time. Used to come here for cold noodles and it was good but now, it's just average. My niece and nephew was there, since they don't eat cold noodles because of spicy. Their mom order BBQ beef ribs, it cost $18.99 an order and come only 14 pieces of ribs. Rib are just fair taste since that's isn't their best seller in the store. But to me it's pricy base on pieces of ribs. During eat-in restaurant, they offer is eggs in small hot pot and a soup in the small hot pot. Their food is not bad, don't get me wrong, but what they have to offer is nothing out of the ordinary - especially for that area. I had really high expectations coming in because I am a Korean cold noodle fanatic, and I hadn't had a decent (above average) bowl of it in forever. I ordered a regular naengmyun and a naengmyun with "special" beef broth, and I have no idea what the difference was supposed to be. Either my tastebuds are dying on me, or they've got a good business strategy going on and fooling people into paying more for the same bowl. (The two bowls even looked identical). The noodles were not bad, the broth was sweet and tangy as it should be, the meat in the broth was mediocre at best, and they skimp on the Korean pears. At least the price isn't ridiculous. The overall environment is that of a typical Korean restaurant in the NY/NJ area. It was a no-hassle, casual sit, eat and leave experience. Stop by if you're in the area, but I don't recommend you go out of your way to eat here. Also, they have a 2-serving minimum in order for you to grill any meat, so keep that in mind before you go! read more

Also tried the "grandfather" style stew which had beef, kimchi, and all other kinds of stuff. It was ok but that cooking style didn't lead to a good texture for the beef. We had to try it since it looked good and the fact that I've never seen it anywhere else. Unfortunately, it was a little bit of a let down. Good duck bbq. I rarely eat duck but I will eat it here. We always get the non marinaded duck and the cast iron drains the fat and oil pretty well so the meat is crispy and not gamey tasting. We've also tried the grandpa's bulgogi stew which was good too but a tad bit too sweet for me. We got the cold noodles as well. I got the sour one which is good. My husband got the spicy bibim noodles but he wasn't a big fan of it. There was too much broth for it to be bibim but not enough broth to be cold noodles. I woke up on a Sunday morning with a huge hankering for naeng myun. And boy, was this right on the money! It satisfied every nook n cranny of my tastebuds with it's sweetness, tanginess, chewiness and ice cold temperature. The cold broth was intense in flavor even after the slush melted. I've had many naeng myuns in my life. But even though I'm not Korean, but was probably Korean in my past life, as a food enthusiast, I could tell this is the best of the best in NYC. Saekomi Chick Naengmyun! Best Naengmyun in NYC hands down!! There are others that are good and most other places are just horrible in NYC. When the temperature first hits 80 in NY this place starts to get packed! Its almost automatic that my stomach starts craving their Naengmyun when the weather gets warmer. They start you off with some hot pepperish potato soup, pickled radishes and fried potatoes as a starter while you wait. Don't bother getting appetizers, these will do as you wait for the Naengmyun to come. If you want Naengmyun in NYC, you HAVE to come here! Order the Saekomi Chick Naengmyun. (Chick- is the buckwheat noodles which are supposedly healthier) Its sweet and there's no need to add the typical mustard and vinegar. Its already perfect. read more

This is my family's favorite spot for naengmyun. Or at least it was. We ordered: - The harabeoji bulgogi ($18.99). - Chik mul naengmyun/cold arrowroot noodles ($10.99) . - Momil mul naengmyun/cold buckwheat noodles (10.99). A lot of side dishes came out and I guess their "specialty" side dish that sets them apart from other Korean restaurants is the fried slices of potato (one slice per person). When our food came out, all the naengmyuns were chik naengmyun, and we told the waitress that one of the naengmyuns was supposed to be momil. The waitress told my dad to just eat it even though he ordered the momil. What?? How can you tell a customer to eat something he didn't order? Hahaha... My dad didn't look very happy and the waitress asked if he wanted the food taken back. He declined and said it was okay because he didn't want to bother her. Anyway, the bulgogi is cooked very differently here because it's just thin slices of beef (sans the marinade) that's pretty much grilled lightly first before it's boiled in a broth with kimchi, mushrooms, scallions and onions. It was nice to eat with the naengmyun, but wasn't flavorful on its own. Need a better example? Think of a watered down kimchi jigae/stew. Onto the naengmyun! Naengmyun is one of my favorite dishes in the spring and summer because it's really refreshing. This restaurant's version comes with: - Sliced cucumbers. - Half a boiled egg. - Two thin slices of pickled radish. - A slice of Asian pear. - A thin slice of beef. It's topped with a dollop of red chili sauce (usually a mix of red pepper paste, red pepper flakes, vinegar, sugar, sesame seeds, garlic and ground onion) and bottles of vinegar and mustard on the side. The broth itself is light with a hint of sweetness, but I like to use a generous amount of vinegar and mustard to have a mix of sweet, spicy, and sour. Completely IGNORED! Tonight's dining experience was by far the worst I have encountered. I initially I requested an indoor table and about to sit when the owner told tje server no we have reservations coming in within the next 30 to 45 minutes and we offered the "outdoor" area. My instincts told me to just leave but my friend said it's OK we can sit outside. From here it was all downhill. We were ignored the entire time which is why I did t want to be outside. There was 1 "Korean family of 4 people" dining outside also yet ALL of fhe attention was solely devoted to that table only!?!? Our meal was delivered to the table and that was the and only time that our server every bothered to return yet she consistently went to the other Korean people dining 7 times as I was counting. The server never even bothered to look our way not even to awe if we needed water. I had to beg the poor innocent Spanish guy who came out to clean up the BBQ grill and ask him for a fork. Yet when it came time for the bill 2 times now they cane out. I refuse to ever give anyone a tip with such disgraceful "service". Just awful read more
