This was booked for a work team event. Axe throwing is hard. So I tried the rage room ($30 per person for 30 minutes), I liked trying it once but it's not my thing. Too aggressive. The rooms are tiny. The shards of broken glass got in my boots :( Ouchie. The earmuffs don't work well so also my ears were also ... ouchie. The staff has an attitude that will grow on you, I'll just say that lol. The inside smells like sweat and beer. They serve snacks and alcohol if you like that. read more

This was a much needed and very fun date night activity. I'd recommend for an activity out with friends, coworkers, and even solo. There's a small bar area in the lobby and also a setup for other activities like axe throwing. In the price of the rage/ smash room you also get all the protective gear (jumpsuit, gloves, glasses, ear protection, and hard hat). We could se to wear the face mask as well for an extra barrier. Also, you choose items to smash depending on what you paid for. Some of the items are quite large like bottles, plates, and vases. You can bring your own items as well. There's a variety of items to smash with such as hammers and wrenches. Personally, I liked just throwing the items! You choose what music you want to play while you smash, which is cool. Had a great time, only wish we had a bit more items to smash. The session went very quickly. read more

I'm no stranger to axe throwing, but I am new to this venue. A friend of mine was celebrating his birthday and decided to do axe throwing here. Checking in was easy and everyone in the party received a wristband and had to confirm we filled out the waiver. I noticed canned beer and wine in some fridges behind another register to the right. I did notice that someone wasn't always standing there, but if you went over someone would come within a minute. Once we got started, the fun never stopped! I forget our instructors' names, but they were enthusiastic and definitely had the energy you'd want when involved in an activity like this. We played some competitive games and I liked the technique that the instructors showed us... some things they described were surprisingly new to me. And what made it even cooler is that the whole time we were axe throwing, we heard all this glass shattering... it was the rage room! I wanted to help my best friend celebrate her birthday. I thought it would be cool for us to go axe throwing for the first. We came shortly after they opened and in doing so we were the only people there. Upon entering, we were barely greater after telling him it was our first time. We tried to tell him what we wanted to do and he pointed us to the tablet and proceeded to walk away. First time at Kraken, and it was a dope experience! The vibe? Immaculate. Dark, industrial, just the right amount of chaotic energy to make you feel like a Viking gearing up for battle. The second I picked up that axe, something primal unlocked in me. First throw? A little questionable. Second throw? Bullseye. By the time I was done, I was out there feeling like the God of Thunder. The rage room? Dope staffing, but left a little to be desired. They have dinner plates and bottles for breaking, but there are no big items such as tv's or vehicles. Regardless, I enjoyed smashing things with a semi-truck wrench, and I left that room feeling lighter than air. Plates, bottles, a whole tire with metal?? Say less. Every swing was therapy, every crash was a breakthrough. Moral of the story? 4/5. Will I be back? You might catch me sharpening my axe skills next weekend. read more

Unfortunately our experience at Kraken's rage room left us a little shocked. I want to start this review by saying it was absolutely not be employees' faults -- they seemed severely understaffed for a Saturday night. They were kind and apologetic, and we appreciated how they handled the situation. Now, the actually experience was lackluster. We rented one of the rage rooms for 30 minutes and it was $90. Our reservation was at 7PM and although the website stresses punctuality, we were not taken to our rage room until 8PM -- a full hour late on our original reservation (we were on time and had to sit around and wait). The room itself was also underwhelming. They give you 3 buckets of plates and that's it -- I am pretty sure it costs additional fees to bring your own items (I could be wrong), but some variety provided by Kraken would be nice especially since it's so pricey. We asked if we could get an additional bucket and were told it would be another $20. We were done with the plates in less than 20 minutes. The room was also pretty small and they shards would bounce back. The past group's broken plates had just been pushed into the corners and so that made the room even smaller. We also had an incident where my friend asked for a larger jumpsuit and they told her no which made our whole group feel uncomfortable. I would not come back here. It was a waste of $90 and 2 hours of our lives we'll never get back. read more

Desperately seeking something to do in DC on the weekend that isn't a bar? Axe throwing is worth a shot. This spot has a few different paths you can take. One is called the rage room, where you can just smash stuff, preferably while screaming out your worries. After a stressful week at work, that's not a bad choice. I have always dreamed of smashing a car with a baseball bat....you can't quite go that far here, but you can smash some glass with a hammer. Not a bad alternative. You can also partake in more traditional axe throwing, where you get an axe and chuck it at a wooden board several feet away. They supply a coach who stays with you to give you the 2 minute run-down on proper form, and they actually do offer useful tips. Once you get started, they are mainly there to make sure you don't act a fool, but every once in a while, he chimed in with ideas and even oversaw a game of axe-21. It is surprisingly easy to get the hang of, and once you get started, it's addictive to fire that bad boy down and stick it in the bulls eye. Bonus points because they have a jukebox - if you get the AMI music app and get $20 worth of credits, you can play an hours' worth of songs. That's what we did - Bodies Hit the Floor? Check. Last Resort? Check. etc etc. Also bonus points because they do sell drinks - they have a few beer options, some high noons, and a few of those canned seltzer cocktails. No hard liquor. Also no food, but I believe they are fine with you bringing in your own from the outside. Minus bonus points because we did have to wait about 20 minutes after our reservation time for a lane to open up despite the space not being full. This isn't a spend the whole night type of experience, but grab a few friends and hang out for an hour, it's worth trying. read more

Came on a Saturday afternoon at 4. It's best to make a reservation, we were able to do so about an hour before we came. Hour play time. You must wear closed toe shoes. I had on sandals but they gave me a pair of knitted socks and thick rain boot like boots to wear - for free! Gabrielle was the Manager and he was awesome! Brandon helped us in our axe throwing bay, cool guy. We were given a quick course on how to throw and then we played "21" a few times. There's a bar for canned drinks and draft beers. Such a fun place to kill some time! My son and I stopped by on a recent trip to DC when it was too hot to be outside and the museums were too busy to be in. Turned out to be a great decision. We both had a fantastic time. The coaches and staff are all amazing and make sure you know what you are doing (safely) and learn to throw successfully. They also have games you can play which keeps it all fun. Plenty of drink selections as well. Highly recommend stopping in if you are looking for something fun to do. read more

This place used to be great for beginners--flattering targets, light axes, and attentive staff. That's exactly why I chose to return here after a three-month break due to an injury. Unfortunately, everything has gone downhill. 1. The manager started arguing about my shoes, even though their website clearly states that closed-toe shoes are required. I was wearing ballet flats, which fully cover the toes, but he insisted that my entire foot had to be covered--something that's nowhere in the actual rules, just his personal interpretation. When I pointed this out, he muttered, "Ugh, they should have been more specific," but instead of just letting me in, he suggested I borrow my husband's socks and his (!) shoes. What kind of nonsense is that? 2. We were unexpectedly paired with a random customer, which made the experience frustrating. It's not this person's fault--they were just a beginner--but we had to constantly wait for them. Since the lanes are shared, you can't retrieve your axe while the other person is still aiming, unless you want to risk getting an axe to the back of the head. 3. The axes were in awful condition, and yet we weren't allowed to use our own. The grip wrapping was in terrible shape, making it uncomfortable and even unsafe to hold. 4. The targets were in terrible shape. They were literally falling apart into splinters, making it impossible for an axe to stick, no matter how accurately you throw. Instead, the axes just dropped to the ground. When I pointed this out to an employee, he pretended not to understand, even though he had the exact same issue while demonstrating the technique. Even when the random customer also complained, he ignored it. 5. We were left with two options: either share a single functional target between three people, or leave. We chose the latter. I used to recommend this place, but after this experience--never again. Complete disappointment. read more

I visited Kraken Axes for a team building activity...I had no clue there was an axe throwing venue in downtown DC. Our host/coach/instructor was Mike and he was awesome! I'd only gone to throw axes one time before and hand-eye coordination isn't my thing. Mike showed us how to throw axes and his technique worked because I actually hit the target more than I ever would have imagined. Went here on a team outing. No one in our group had any previous experience with throwing axes and our instructor Angus did a great job with training us on the safely protocols and how to throw these things. It's not as easy as you think and took some practice. We were having fun until....one of the axes took a weird bounce on the rubber section of the floor (below the target) and came flying back and hit one of the members in the leg and foot (yes she was standing in the safe zone). After we made sure she was ok we took a break and slowly started to throw again. We played one of the games involving reaching 21 and that was fun. There was a bar with a limited selection of beverages. Overall it was fun but personally not something that I would go out of my way to do again. read more

This is a pretty neat spot. I've never done axe throwing before but I feel like I'm somewhat of a pro after one session. They were extremely accommodating and very understanding that it was my first time. I went by myself and they threw a few rounds with me to accompany me. Shout out to Jerome They are located near the Gallery Pl., Chinatown metro stop, so it's an easy event to add to any occasion. The safety measures were well enforced. Our first time at Kraken Axes was for a party of 4 celebrating our friend's birthday. We cannot wait to come back!!! We had so much fun throwing axes, and Angus was our superstar instructor. I came in letting everyone know I was awful at axe throwing, but I was happy to participate, and by the time we left I was the winner! Angus showed us all how to properly throw based on our height and how to position ourselves. He was so wonderful and down to earth and fun to be around! We all had great conversation with him. The atmosphere all around was just lively and fun. They have a small bar where you can get both alcoholic and non-alcoholic drinks while you wait and throw. Never have I done Axe throwing but was anxious & little intimidated to try. My department hosted a team outing here that included dinner. I did not coordinate, so I cannot comment on arrangements; however, when we arrived, everyone was greeted by the front desk hostess who was very helpful and personable. We were given our wrist bands and directed to the small bar for sodas, bottle water or beer (no frills) and chips and salsa were served before dinner. Once the event started we were welcomed, provided clear instructions on what to expect and introduced to our coaches who would teach each person how to safely throw the axe. Even though I was nervous, my coach was very helpful, understanding and did a super job at watching your throw and giving great tips to help better your form. I became very comfortable quickly and really enjoyed myself and watching others try too. The coaches were enthusiastic and really love what they do and wanting you to perform your best. They're thrilled and cheer when you do well and when things don't go so well, they are very encouraging too. After a couple rounds food was served. We had street tacos (chicken, beef, pork). I opted for chicken only and they were very tasty. All the fixins you'd expect including guacamole. It seemed like a well run organization, clean and safe space, restrooms were clean. Only issue I had was getting too warm but they did bring over a fan to the lanes we were using, which helped. read more

The most AMAZING GENDER REVEAL EVER! I cannot rave enough about how great the staff and managers at Kraken axes are! I reached out to ask them if I could do our gender reveal there (saw axe throwing gender reveals on Pinterest and it looked fun!) and although they had never done one before, they said they'd be happy to!! This was especially great because the other axe throwing place in DC gave me a hard no - they didn't want to mess up their floors. It was just as well because my fiancé took me out on a date night almost exactly 1 year ago to the date at Kraken Axes and we loved it then! Shannon (the manager) at Kraken was so incredibly helpful and enthusiastic to do it -- she even volunteered to get all of the balloons, blow them up and out the gender color in 2 of them and gold neutral glitter in the rest! I was blown away. I had fully been thinking I needed to provide everything, especially since they had never done it before and neither had she, but she totally took the reins and made it so easy for me (as a 1st time pregnant mama, I reallllly appreciated it) and made it an amazing event! All I had to do was send her the the gender results and she handled the rest! When we arrived, Shannon and her awesome team were going the extra mile to decorate the axe throwing area for us (a great surprise to us!) and even put up a banner I brought. Everyone was so happy to do everything and make this a fun event that it made it UBER fun for us! When our guests arrived, they got to throw some axes on their own and get some drinks while we waited to start - an extra perk of making this an actual fun event for adults who wanna have a good time too! Once we got started, we were worried it'd take a while to burst the balloons. My fiancé, a skilled axe thrown, tried a couple of times with no success (but the cheering and drama from our friends and other customers were worth it!! Lol). I tried, being a super novice thrower, and hit the gender reveal balloon on the first try!! Woohoo! Shannon even captured the best pic of us dying with excitement over finding out we're having a BOY!! She even went and got an "it's a boy!" Cute onesie sign for us to hold (as a surprise keepsake for us!). Like I said, this was the most AMAZING experience ever! I came here with an alumni association group, and everyone had a great time. We had a group of 30 people, which worked out surprisingly well given the size of the venue. They are good about making sure that everyone goes through the safety demonstration, which is important because ain't nobody got time for axes gone astray! There is a bar, which I was confused by because it seems like a bad idea to combine axe throwing with alcohol. That said, actual liquor/spirits are not available; they have a variety of low-ABV canned drinks and beers. I had a canned rum and coke, which actually was not half bad, although I definitely side eyed it in the beginning for the fact that it was canned. There are also snacks (think chips and things like that), with more substantial food being available from the restaurant next door, Cedar. The one bump is that we had planned for our group to order food on site from the restaurant, which they said in advance was fine, but then it turned out that Cedar was closed for a private event that night. We ended up working it out, but this gave me a bit of a panic since I was responsible for feeding a bunch of hungry alumni! The actual ace throwing itself is a lot of fun, and it works out well that there are tables spread throughout the venue so that people can hang out and talk or throw axes when they feel like it. First time axe throwing and we found this place online. We weren't sure if we should make reservations but I guess we should've. We arrive and the host told us we would have to play with another group which would be a 15 min wait vs waiting 2 hours for a reservation for just two of us. So obvious choice was to join another group. Place itself is not that big. I thought it would be a bit bigger We were called and it's a bit loud so it's hard to hear the instructor. Overall our group turned out to be pretty fun, we spilt up into teams and we got a good amount turns so we got our money's worth. Overall space was clean. Bathrooms could've used some work. Pieces from the rage room were on the floor going towards the bathroom which could be a safety issue if not paying attention I wish they have a better drink selection, but from what they had if you are a beer or canned wine person then you are good to go. I probably would go back but I'd make reservations next time. read more

Manager made my birthday experience terrible!! We booked a reservation for 6 people at 5pm and was not taken back to the room until well after 6pm. The manager initially tried to accuse one of the members of my party of taking a Red Bull without paying when she was at the neighboring bar prior. When it was time to pick out our breakables, THERE WAS NOTHING LEFT!!! It was only a few plates and serving plates but again, we were a part of 6. We asked the manager to adjust the cost of the tokens considering we had no real inventory to choose from AND it was well after our reservation time. He refused. He basically told us it was our problem and not his. How does an establishment continue to accept reservations if they are not prepared to provide the proper inventory? Seyauna was trying to be very accommodating and was very understanding of our perspective. Her hands were tied as the manager, Demario continued to shut down her requests for accommodation for our group. He was very rude, condescending, and only attempted to change his tune when we acknowledged that we had a lawyer in our group. Only then he went to get some bottles (after mentioning 45mins prior he would go get them but never did) to add to our crates for free. Overall, our experience was tarnished the moment we walked through the door due to the manager's treatment. DO NOT VISIT THIS LOCATION FOR THE RAGE ROOM IF YOU HAVE AN EVENING RESERVATION AS THERE IS NO INVENTORY AND THE MANAGER DEMARIO WILL NOT PROVIDE ANY ADJUSTMENTS!
