The venue itself is nice. There is beer/cider wall for those interested, we did not partake so couldn't let you know how good their selection is. I will say - unless you have a big group - 1 hour is enough time for your date. We ended up getting a little bored towards the end. Went on a double date here and we were the first and only people there. The staff was either tired or bored but they gave us a quick run down but no one ever taught us how to throw the axe and were told them we didn't have any experience. So we all just did a whole trial and error and laughed at each other. There wasn't any music playing either so it was a bit awkward at times. We ended up playing pool but they couldn't supply us with quarters so we could only play one game. So long story short, there were a lot of little issues but we were there so early that I feel like on a Friday or Saturday night it's way more vibrant. By far this was the most chill axe throwing experience I've ever had, which I think was perfect since our party had so many first timers! I have a friend getting married, and he tasked me with organizing a hangout for the entire wedding party. You can easily go on Stumpy's website to make a reservation, and I did so once everyone who would be in attendance was confirmed. Once completed, a shareable link for signing waivers is provided, and everyone got to it in their own time. As the date drew closer, a few folks ended up cancelling, so I had to adjust the reservation. There's no option (that I saw) to do that online, so I called it and the reservation was updated within a minute. So chill and accommodating! A similar thing occurred the day of when someone cancelled last minute due to getting sick... They were happy to remove them and we carried on as we were supposed to. We went into a training room to get the 101, read rules and ask questions. It was straightforward, though I feel like those further away might've had trouble hearing the dude. We got our two adjacent pits, and I was shocked that the place wasn't full on a Friday night! There were a bunch of pits, a full wall where you could use a drink card to pour beer by the ounce, enough blocks to make a HUGE Jenga stack, bball & skeeball, and pool soccer... where you're using soccer balls and your feet instead of cue balls and pool sticks. I really wanted to play that, but we didn't have time after we finished axe throwing. By the way, that was fun!!! Targets got swapped out as they were worn down, but 2 hours was plenty of time to get a nice arm workout in. Everyone became a pro within the time. The guy occasionally came by to give pointers. 11.9.22 Came in for an outing with colleagues for an hour of ax throwing. Upon arrival, we were instructed to complete a waiver. Good idea to have waivers so those who are accident-prone like me aren't a liability to them. Once everyone arrived, our coach went over the hatchet throwing rules. Then we were off to show off our skills or lack thereof. I fell into the latter category. Sadly, I was the only one in my group that couldn't get the ax to stay on the board. Merchandise available for purchase include beer, pizza, apparel, and accessories. They have an ATM conveniently located inside. They also have a few arcade games, which you pay separately. Board games, Jenga, and the corn hole are free. It was a bit loud as there was another party there. This venue is located in the back of the building. It's isolated and dark. When you come here, the directions take you to the back part, keep driving straight to the other side and you will see the store front! Noah and Megan were awesome! I went with my sister and friends for my sister's birthday. You fill out a waiver once you get there. You finish paying after everything. Once you get to your space, there are other games like dominoes to play while you wait your turn. Noah led us in how to handle the axe. After many tries we got it! We had a blast. Between the music and taking turns throwing the axes, I have no complaints. You could also partake of beer, hard cider, hard seltzer and twisted tea. So much fun for the whole family! I would like to have stayed even longer! Shoutout to the amazing team and especially Coach Anthony! We had a wonderful Father's Day celebration and made some awesome memories! I was not sure how much fun it would be, but I am so glad that we had a very special occasion to celebrate and Coach Anthony and team members did so much to make it happen! The reservation process was so easy online and we even signed the waivers before we got there which saved even more time! We were able to call through to the front desk and let them know that we were running late because of our previous commitments and that everyone was traveling from different directions. They did so well to accommodate us. We all ended up arriving pretty much all at the same time though and then Coach Anthony taught us safety rules, some techniques, and even one on one tips based on what we can do individually to make sure that we could feel more confident and shine in the spotlight! Fathers Day included a special piece of board that everyone was able to sign a personal message for Dad... even Coach signed!!! We had pizza and hot food delivered from a local vendor and that offered fast, delicious, and courtesy service. Pizza, onion rings, mozzarella sticks, cheese steak, etc! Sooooo yummy! The games for axe throwing games were fun and ringing the bell for bull-eyes was so exciting! And yes, we could not resist a few games of skee-ball! SOOOOOO much fun during these COVID times! I was looking for something different to do and came across Axe Throwing...YES! So, I made a reservation. But this weather here in the DMV (actually nationwide as of late) is so unpredictable. ICE caused us to cancel. The GM called me to reschedule and gave a time recommendation to coincide with the 'hot dog food truck'. ...another YES! Did you know I love beer. AND cider. Which paired nicely (see what I did there) with their self-serve taps. It's pretty cool, they give you a card that you slide into the tap to pour. You can see instantly the cost of that pour. You pay when you check out. I believe they also have wine and other drinks. Luckily, they start with some coaching........mainly for safety reasons, which is good. You don't want to be throwing when somebody else is downfield retrieving their axe. Once you get the hang of it you're on a roll. I do believe the actual board does make a difference. One of ours was fairly new and the second was beat up. It's harder for the axe to stick to the beat up target. There's a little chalk board so you can keep score to start a game. It's fun! But Stumpy's has so much more! After we threw axes we played a game of Jenga with their GIANT blocks. Then we played skee-ball. They also have those basketball machines, pool tables, and a few other games. Lot's to do. We stayed quite awhile and they're okay with that. You can even bring your own food. There was a group there celebrating a birthday. It's a big roomy warehouse so I felt safe. AND, we left with shirts. You can buy merchandise and spin the wheel for a certain percentage off. I had an excellent experience at Stumpy's! Last Wednesday, 7/26, I reserved online what I thought was a 6pm time slot for Friday, 7/28. Wellll, as it turns out, I had a 6pm reservation on 7/26! At 6:20, someone from Stumpy's called me to find out why I'd missed my reservation! Whoops! Luckily I was able to reschedule for the time slot on Friday I originally wanted. Good customer service though, I was quite impressed. So, Friday, 7/28, I showed up at Stumpy's. The building that houses Stumpy's is deceptively small looking from the outside. It's huge inside with a great number of pens. It's open and airy in there also, and super clean despite all the pieces of wood that fly off the targets. Signing in was a breeze and a rep there pointed out some amenities to me. There's a bar, but also a self-serve beer station! So easy to use once I got the brief tutorial from Madison. Plus they had a pretty tasty sour on tap! My friend and I were shown to our pen and were given a quick how-to from Madison. She stuck around for our initial throws, then left us to it. It was so much fun! We threw for about an hour for just under $27 per person (including tax). Another Stumpy's employee, Alex, stopped by to check our progress. I wasn't doing so great but was having a blast anyway. Alex stuck around for a while, helping me with my form and technique. He's a great teacher and definitely helped me improve overall. Stumpy's was pretty fun! Took a group of 6 for a night out and it was quite the experience trying to hit the board let alone get a bulls eye! The Axe throwing experience gets a 5, but the beer wall was a dud as the card system kept glitching and when it did work our choice of ales was out or pretty expensive. .55-$1 an oz adds up quickly! I'd definitely recommend it as a date night spot, but for larger groups not sure it's something I would do on the regular because of the cost ($40+tax per person for 3-10 people) read more

Don't sleep on Stumpy's! Perfect for a date night, party, or night out with friends. First impressions are important, and Stumpy's doesn't disappoint. The staff is gregarious and helpful, and the facility a joy to be in. There's plenty to do at Stumpy's; though, the primary form of entertainment is the axe throwing. It was our first time, and after a quick demo and some rules--we were off. It's a LOT harder than Jason Momoa makes it look; but, luckily the coaches on staff offer some fantastic advice. Both my wife and I were able to get a bullseye before our first hour was up! We even finished a few games too. There's a few arcade games and a pool table. Perfect if you're looking for something else to do while waiting for a pit--or after your session. The bar experience alone made Stumpy's worth returning to. I'm a huge mead and cider fan, and they had my favorite on tap. It's all self-pour--so there shouldn't be any bad pints. Once again--the staff shined here too. They had a few "home-brew" concoctions of mixing/matching some of the ciders & saisons. The suggestions were delicious, and it made me feel like a kid at the soda machine again. They have Wardaca brews on tap--which is also nice since that brewery is a little out of our way. Wife and I will definitely be back for a date day. We've already suggested this place to friends. We had a group event and we're able to reserve a Tuesday night. The staff were so friendly and welcoming, none of our group had ever thrown axes, we were newbies. We were set up with a nice location that allowed us to have some meeting space as well as the axe pit. Anthony was our barkeep and he showed us all about the pour wall. I loved how easy it was to try a different lager or cider. It also helps take the pressure off of group settings, we could pay individually and not worry about how to split the bill. Plus by pouring our own drinks, Anthony was able to spend time showing tips on how to throw! I definitely would recommend this spot for date night, or meeting up with friends. They also provide lists of restaurants that deliver, so I think that's pretty smart. read more

My friends and I (group of 4) stopped by Stumpy's today Nov1st and we used a Groupon to get a pretty cool deal on the axe throwing. Josh was the only employee that helped us out today and we was an absolute pleasure. He got us checked in, briefed us on safety rules and gave us a mini tutorial, He also made sure we had everything we needed to have a good night and was rather personable. I came here with some friends just for a fun outing. We came on a Saturday night, so it was pretty packed. We had to wait about 20 minutes after our reservation time for the party ahead of us to wrap up. The staff was very apologetic and was helpful with giving us updates. Once we got to the back our instructor walked us through everything pretty quickly. My only complaint with the axe throwing is that our wood target was extremely worn, and most of our throws fell out. Speaking as a semi pro and league player: This place looks awesome inside and has a LOT of potential to be a super fun, adult hangout with beer, games, and axe throwing. However... they DO NOT let outside axes due to their custom back board set up. Although their set up allows for a quick change up for staff to replace broken boards, it absolutely translates into a disadvantage to the paying customer in many ways. The first and most obvious is the noise factor. Their target array extremely loud, and is quite uncomfortable for most visitors. I went with a party of 30 for a work event and all 30 in my group thought the noise of axes hitting the targets were extremely loud and off putting. This was never a problem at all the other axe throwing establishments my work has booked for events More than 50% of the group left early due to the noise factor. And I'm willing to bet this will translate in them never coming back. ...the rest of the axe house, or "hatchet house" as they are called is .....pretty cool. But if you are going to this establishment for axe throwing, DO NOT waste your time and money or your companies money and employees time for a morale event. There are MUCH better places in the area that are worth your time and money. I can personally recommend Annapolis Axe House, and Urban Axes - Baltimore as being the top places to go for axe throwing and axe throwing leagues. Or just a place to go have a drink and throw some axes. Both of these aforementioned axe throwing establishments are chill and relaxing and very very fun. Again, due to the absolutely over-the-top and ridiculous noise levels Stumpy's loses all ability to be chill, relaxing or fun. It is painful and uncomfortable to spend more then 10 minutes inside. I would not recommend, nor will I return to Stumpys Hatch House. I would have given the review a 1 start, but other than axe throwing, Stumpys is really cool inside. The vibe of this place is so chill. My favorite thing is the self serve alcohol options. There was a passion fruit guava cider so delish and they make it real cool proof to use. My husband and I had a fun date night here! He tried axe throwing once before, it was my first time. We both had fun, and we played a little bit of skee ball afterward. It was $50 for 1 hour ($25 per person per hour) when we went at 5pm on a Friday. So, probably not something I would do regularly. BUT - if you are having a really fun time, the next hour is half off. A few cons: - It's a little hard to find, you drive into Frisco's and go all the way around to the other side, and there it is, right behind the battery store. - When I called because we were having trouble finding it, no one picked up (it was 5pm on Friday so they should have someone working the phones). - When we arrived, no one was at the check-in desk. We just walked back and started filling out the waiver. - There wasn't anyone working the bar, but this guy would run over to it when we wanted to get a drink. Overall, the place seemed short staffed. - Also, the bar lets you pour your own beer. Kind of fun, but no one seemed to be wiping off the handles in between users. Also, it didn't look like they wiped off the waiver tablets in between people either. And the coaches came right up to us, no physical distancing. Axe throwing is such a new & fun activity! It was $25 per person for 1 hour, they also have 2 hour reservations but you may need to work on your arm muscles for that one or come with more people. I felt like 1 hour was a good amount of time though for a 3 person group. Our Coach, McKayla, did a really great job of giving us a safety run-through in the beginning and any follow up tips to improve our form. They also have a pretty extensive beer wall. They give you a card that you need to scan which lets you mix and match whatever you want. Alex helped to show us different concoctions that tasted so good and were refreshing. Overall, highly recommend this place! The staff is so friendly and helped elevate the experience. I have been to Stumpy's two times and both times have been fantastic. This review involves an employee by the name of Anthony who went above and beyond to make sure my wife and I had a great time. He helped us with some throwing tips and explained each game they had in their binder when we asked. Sometimes you get people/employees who annoy you with too much asking if you need help or talking the whole time or not there when you need them, Anthony did the perfect amount to allow us to have a good time. Fun place, friendly staff. My wife and I reserved a spot on a Saturday at 8pm. Was busy but staff was still very attentive. If it's your first time, they will have a coach go over the rules, give some tips, and show you a few demo axe throws. They then show you to your range and let you have at it. The ranges themselves had 2 targets per designated area for your group, with 1 axe per target. Axes looked like 14" estwing camper's hatchets. You are unable to bring your own axes for insurance purposes. You are allowed to throw in a space roughly 10-12 feet back from the target marked by 2 strips of tape on the group, which is 1 axe rotation I believe. I do wish they had some longer ranges, but this is good for beginners and for just having a good time. They have a little bell you can ring every time you hit a bullseye just for fun. Staff will walk around and check on you, and will replace the target 2x4s if they get too banged up. They have food and a bar I believe, but we didn't get anything since we were mostly there for the axe throwing. They have good seating areas for your range and around the site as well. Looks like they have some other games like pool, and they had a few giant Jenga sets up too. At the end of our 1hr time limit one of the coaches/staff (Ryan) came up to us and challenged our best axe thrower (me) to a game of 21....and I proceeded to smoke his AXE! Won me a free game of pool for my next visit. Definitely recommend this as a fun date night/group event, and will be back.
